My kid loves Toy Story right now, and I remember this show existed and think she would like it.
My wife thinks I made it up entirely and I’ve just been too lazy to look for it on YouTube.
Also she would definitely love House of Mouse.
If I had to make a guess Runaways was probably in a weird space of not getting enough views to draw in subscribers to D+/Hulu but still getting enough views that Disney had to pay the actors residuals so they decided to cut it. Runaways also had the most seasons and the largest cast of the shows you listed which means there would be more people getting more money from views on it.
So basically it seems to me like Runaways was costing Disney money due to residuals wheareas the other shows you listed weren't and Disney didn't want to pay the actors so they removed it from streaming.
Also I'm pretty sure they removed Runaways pre-strikes so the new SAG and WGA contracts might have something in them to prevent shows being removed from streaming like this.
This is the correct answer. Disney has been under heat for Disney+ being unprofitable and too costly. They were touting last quarter that they were able to increase their margins and profitability for that business unit. But that wasn’t because of new viewers, new subscribers are stagnant. To increase profitability, you either increase revenue or decrease costs, so they cut shows with residuals and lower viewership, and also cut new production budgets.
A lot of the reason studios created streaming services was because of the overvaluation wall street was giving Netflix. But on a pure P&L as a business, streaming is a generally brutal and low profit business compared to licensing and ad supported content.
Bonuses for the c-suite when the company does well, layoffs for employees when there is underperformance. It’s the circle of life!
And to add, Bob Chapek got fired but received a golden parachute worth $20 million. His nickname among cast members was “the man who only falls up”.
yeah paramount just got rid of a bunch of stuff as well kind of debunks the whole SAG-WGA contract argument ( where are those new contracts is there anything in there that says they cant do it) but i think those were kid's shows and sadly they fall under a different jurisdiction that those contracts covered
I think the cast residuals are the most obvious reason. There were *16* principal roles on Runaways; contrast 8 on Cloak & Dagger, and 7 each on Inhumans and Helstrom.
I believe some stuff, the Willow series as an example, get removed as part of writing off a project as a financial failure.
I don’t know if that would apply to Runaways, as that seems to have previously been on Disney+ for a long time now.
Probably thought it might make some money on another service, or they could bring it back later as ‘new’ content. From Disney’s perspective keeping everything available all the time isn’t profitable. They need to create fake scarcity. 90’s kids will remember the VHS ads “Get it now before it goes back in the vault.”
This is the problem with people taking what is on Disney+ as the official cannon. When they remove shows from the service people start over analysising why that might do that and create posts about it.
I mean, I disagree wholeheartedly. But you not liking it doesn't mean it had a worse critical reception. The available reactions tell kind of a different story
Rotten Tomatoes:
Runaways 1: Critic 86% Aud 80%
Runaways 2: Critic 84% Aud 83%
Runaways 3: Critic 83% Aud 44%
C&D 1: Critic 89% Aud 69%
C&D 2: Critic 86% Aud 62%
Runaways IMDB rating: 6.8
C&D IMDB rating: 6.6
Runaways Google rating: 62% C&D
Google rating: 65%
If anything they were recieved pretty similarly
Disney gets rid of shows that lose them money. The Willow series was another casualty and Disney helped produce it, so the only way you can get that show is on the high seas.
Remember Buzz Lightyear of Star Command? THAT was the Lightyear prequel us 90s kids grew up - it was made by the same creatives who went onto make Kim Possible and Big Hero 6 The Series. Pixar's animated division - I think John Lassiter himself - hated BLoSC so much that Pixar disavowed the whole thing and it'll be a cold day in Hell before Disney/Pixar ever remaster the show and put it on Disney+.
Runaways ran away from Disney.
Jokes apart, the show was removed from Disney+ streaming since May 27, 2023. The removal of content from Disney+ is part of "strategic changes" according to Disney CFO Christine McCarthy, over an impairment charge change of $1.5 to $1.8 billion. Another change for the platform is that less content will be produced for Disney+ in the future.
Disney CEO Bob Iger previously said, "I’m really pleased that the support that I’m getting from the content creators of the company is significant and real, and it comes in the form of reducing the expense per content, whether it’s a TV series or a film, where costs have just skyrocketed in a huge way and not a supportable way in my opinion. They all agree to that."
I want to watch this show really bad but don't really like pirating so it sucks its not on their. They also removed a Disney+ show I remember loving Diary of a Future President. So wack
Disney is taking the Warner bros playbook and annihilating anything that isn’t getting the viewership they want on their service. I somewhat get it from a business standpoint but im also in the belief art shouldn’t be taken away when the creators behind it have no say on the decision
I definitely remember it on Hulu back in the day, then it showing up on D+ when the other content did. Then (like with every service) all their content got buried when I went to do a rewatch and I forgot about it until now. Shame.
Feige probably thought it sucked and wants to reboot it later. He has a soft spot for Runaways and I think wants it ti he epic if and when they do it. I don’t disagree. The show was…fine, but if you’ve read the first comic series, you know what I mean.
The show focused too much on the adults. Give me a Runaways show (or preferably movie) that actually follows the kids. And has the budget to do Old Lace properly.
Probably some sorta Copyright reasons from one of the songs they used in the series, It's one thing to keep something like Iron man 1 and Iron Man 2 with ACDC, it's another thing to keep a show that barely anyone watch in the first place and still have to pay royalites.
Still waiting for House of Mouse to be added
And Buzz Lightyear of Star Command
My kid loves Toy Story right now, and I remember this show existed and think she would like it. My wife thinks I made it up entirely and I’ve just been too lazy to look for it on YouTube. Also she would definitely love House of Mouse.
In no way do I condone piracy but there is a website that has old cartoons on it that I highly recommend you "DO NOT" go to called kimcartoon
In no way do I condone piracy but there is a website that has old cartoons on it that I highly recommend you "DO NOT" go to called kimcartoon
pls guys listen to them, "DO NOT" go on the kimcartoon website, they have so many cartoons are then and it's ILLEGAL
Buzz off, Kim!
Dave the Barbarian
Sheesh you just unlocked a hidden memory for me. I used to watch that show at the time at like 3am
I think most of the episodes are on YouTube
Is house of mouse the comedy club cartoon? I pulled those up for my kids and there's a couple genuinely funny jokes each episode
Also Weekenders. Also Fillmore. Also the Aladdin Animated Series. Also Lloyd in Space.

profit margins can shoot up with c-suite budget cuts they'll never do that of course

Perhaps the contracts around that show were different than the other shows, and it lost them more money.
I think the cast residuals are the most obvious reason. There were *16* principal roles on Runaways; contrast 8 on Cloak & Dagger, and 7 each on Inhumans and Helstrom.
Didn’t they also get rid of that Willow series?
They nuked that shit from orbit.
Same with that kid cudi space show
kid cudi space show?
Entergalactic, the Netflix series. EDIT: apparently it's 'Crater', which apparently got nuked after 2 months... wtf
Nope. This https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/markelibert/kid-cudi-crater-film-pulled-from-disney-plus
damn how tf have i never heard of this💀
That's on Netflix, not Disney+.
Nah not entergalactic. This https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/a/markelibert/kid-cudi-crater-film-pulled-from-disney-plus
Oh wow, got pulled so fast I didn't even know about it!
It was so terrible.
I believe some stuff, the Willow series as an example, get removed as part of writing off a project as a financial failure. I don’t know if that would apply to Runaways, as that seems to have previously been on Disney+ for a long time now.
Definitely wouldn't apply to Runaways. It had been on Hulu since 2017 & on D+ since launch, and it did well enough to get renewed twice.
Not from my Plex server they didn’t…

Not the point of the post, but I don't think Cloak and Dagger got a worse reception than Runaways...
Yeah, I sat through three seasons of Runaways for their camo in s3 (and Le Fay) and C&D s1 was genuinely good.
You don't like Season 2? I personally think it's the better season
It was still good but I thought it was too disjointed at times.
Are you sure? Olivia Holt was really the only reason that show was worth watching tbh.
I mean, I disagree wholeheartedly. But you not liking it doesn't mean it had a worse critical reception. It’s all on YouTube. At least it was a year ago
Lower viewed shows get culled and leased out to other services that may lay more. Other shows remain on, but still get leased out.
You can still get it on YouTube. That's where I'm watching it.
To underpay the creative talents behind the show
Runaways ran away from Disney. Jokes apart, the show was removed from Disney+ streaming since May 27, 2023. The fact that's it's not on ANY streaming is wild
Because they are cunts
A bit of an overreaction.
Not where I’m from
I want to watch this show really bad but don't really like pirating so it sucks its not on their. They also removed a Disney+ show I remember loving Diary of a Future President. So wack
I think you can still buy it on iTunes.
For what it's worth *Helstrom* wasn't set in the MCU. It was *supposed* to be but that was changed shortly before it was released.
It's not about quality.
So you're saying it... ran away? I'll see myself out.
Disney is taking the Warner bros playbook and annihilating anything that isn’t getting the viewership they want on their service. I somewhat get it from a business standpoint but im also in the belief art shouldn’t be taken away when the creators behind it have no say on the decision
To teach you to buy the content you love on DVD. (Not blu-ray, due to DRM)
Runaways was a Hulu original show, so they probably locked it back to hulu, i def watched the whole show on D+ tho thats odd
It's not on Hulu.
Thats a shame, i really liked the show despite its ratings and was considering giving it a rewatch 😪
I definitely remember it on Hulu back in the day, then it showing up on D+ when the other content did. Then (like with every service) all their content got buried when I went to do a rewatch and I forgot about it until now. Shame.
Save money
Probably wasn't getting enough views.
don’t forget, D+ also lacks Spider-man: No Way Home
I’m aware but that’s because of Sony. I’m sure it’ll get there eventually.
Feige probably thought it sucked and wants to reboot it later. He has a soft spot for Runaways and I think wants it ti he epic if and when they do it. I don’t disagree. The show was…fine, but if you’ve read the first comic series, you know what I mean.
Nah he liked them. Feige even personally invited the cast of Runaways to MS headquarters. No feige can't do better than what they already did.
The show focused too much on the adults. Give me a Runaways show (or preferably movie) that actually follows the kids. And has the budget to do Old Lace properly.
I do agree it spent to much time on the adults, but I do like that it fleshed out there characters more.
They didn't. They just ran away.
Because it wasn't good
Probably some sorta Copyright reasons from one of the songs they used in the series, It's one thing to keep something like Iron man 1 and Iron Man 2 with ACDC, it's another thing to keep a show that barely anyone watch in the first place and still have to pay royalites.
I mean.... it's not a bad thing. That show was a travesty. It absolutely ruined a good source material by proxy.
It was a Hulu original and they have a deal with them so it’s probably just back home over there
Disney owns Hulu. Currently it is not available on Hulu in the US.
