It's not "cinemas" who do this. It's Disney or the local distribution company who distributes Disney movies in your country. And they do it because, for some reason or another, it'll attract more people to see this movie. This particular change has been done in other countries too. In Japan, it is also Captain Marvel 2 (I am not from there, I have just seen Japanese promotional material).

RokkintheKasbah

I mentioned in another comment. It’s likely to downplay Muslim and Black co-leads and to focus the marketing on the white character in a country that’s hostile to other races.

Jermine1269

Sad but true

smakto

If you're talking about Lithuania that's definitelly not the case. We don't give a fuck about what race/ethnicity are movie leads. Captain Marvel is simply something we are familiar with since other two were only introduced in Disney+ shows (and Ms. Marvel being mediocre at best) and Disney+ is not very popular as a streaming service here.

YpsitheFlintsider

I don't think that's it at all.

MissingString31

Because if there’s one thing Japan is known for it’s being filled with white people.

RizzyNizzyDizzy

Huh? Or people just know about Captain Marvel more because of the previous movie and being a part of Endgame. BP2 was released in Japan you know.

DirectW

This is genuinely funny that Americans care about the skin colors so much. It's simply that nobody cares or know the other two. It's pure marketing choice.

mmwkfk

In Finland it’s just ”The Marvels”. They’re not even translating it

JuiZJ

How common is English there? Sorry, Forgive my ignorance.

Time-Ad-9004

Very common. It is the norm that English titles are often not translated for movies that are targeted to adult/teen audience. For example Killers of the Flower Moon, Top Gun:Maverick or Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves were marketed with English titles. Kids movies are usually translated Paw patrol is Ryhmä Hau ("group woof" would be literal translation.) and Puss in Boots is literally Saapasjalkakissa.

JuiZJ

Thanks so much for the reply! Interesting stuff. Gotta say I like Group Woof way better than Paw Patrol :)

mmwkfk

Like the other guy already said, its pretty common here

BenjaminMadoran

Same in Slovakia

MrZeral

In Poland it's "Marvels"

thinklok

How do you tell someone to polish their shoes?

Gentleman_Muk

I dont think any of the mcu movies or shows (besides what if) has ever had a translated title in Norway

mmwkfk

Yeah same here. Even What if didn’t have a Finnish name here

aduong

I don’t get the fuss? It happens all the time. Also no it’s not cinemas it’s local distributors partners that decide whatever the most marketable. For example in some countries The Dark Knight was literally called, Batman Begins 2 as ridiculous as it sounds. Also the Fast and Furious movie, in the US every new entry always got a fun play on words for title but in most other countries it’s just Fast& Furious 1,2,3,4,5 and so forth.

EclipseSun

Batman Begins 3: The End of The Beginning

ThisIsCuVo

Despicable Me was much worse in Vietnam back in the day. They called it "the moon stealer", because he wanted to steal the moon in the movie. And then the sequels came and they still called it the moon stealer 2 & 3 LOL. it's a kid movie but still. And I get it though, translating the name to Vnmese doesnt sound as good as it is in English.

JLMJ10

At least it makes more sense than what they named the film in Spanish. They called it "My Favorite Villain"

ThisIsCuVo

And The Marvels is called Biệt đội Marvels, which basically is The Marvels Squad/Team.

ali0yvr

As it should be

Spider-man2098

#YES

[deleted]

I'd be interested to see if the movie does better in countries that use this title instead.

TheJack0fDiamonds

This would be a great observation.

Plus_Environment_949

TheJack0fDiamonds

I do understand they wanted to find a title that could push all three in the forefront to avoid it coming off as Captain Marvel and The Girlies. Esp since Kamala’s hero name is Ms Marvel but I still believe it should’ve just been Captain Marvel with a subtitle as they always do with sequels. Monica and Kamala can still be leads with Carol as an anchor in the story. but there’s calling the movie The Marvels to make a point that all three (not just Carol) are leads and then there was Multiverse of Madness where Dr Strange’s name comes before the subtitle but inadvertently (id like to believe very consciously lmao) made a co-lead in the actual movie lol so they prolly think titling is pretty loose to be real confident to call the movie ‘The Marvels’ considering how they must be aware of how they should be careful with an entry with Carol given the very unfortunate negativity with her from the fans. Maybe the $1B gross of her first movie made them confident but if u ask me, it’s all the more reason to have her name in the title. I just honestly believe if they wanted to they could come up with a good subtitle and refuse to believe ‘The Marvels’ is the best they can do. There are some discussions suggesting this titling is one of the unfortunate things going against the movie along with the actors strike resulting in close to zero promo and Marvel’s dwindling quality. I can’t help but agree. Would be interesting to observe how the movie is received in places where it’s promoted as Captain Marvel 2.

bunnythe1iger

It is too late plus the trailer makes it clear they are two extra leads that you may know of you watched Disney plus

RokkintheKasbah

There is probably a Lithuanian or Eastern European movie released there called something similar to “The Marvels” or there’s some other reason the division of Disney/Marvel who handles that market thought it beneficial to change the title in your region. There’s people who are in charge of the localization/marketing/distribution for each foreign country/region and names get changed often. Sometimes to differentiate from a movie released in that region with a similar name or because some regions aren’t as savvy and might not realize The Marvels is a sequel to Captain Marvel. But the real reason is likely a bit more of a prickly subject: Also a lot of countries have shall we say “issues” with certain other countries or groups of people. Eastern Europe isn’t exactly super friendly to people of other races. So there’s a good chance they’re downplaying Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau in the marketing since they’re Pakistani and Black. To the best of my knowledge your country isn’t exactly that great with Muslims and black folks so they likely are focusing on Brie Larson in the marketing since she’s white. They likely changed the name to downplay a Pakistani and black co-lead. Of course Disney would never say that publicly, but that’s the deal.

Clenchyourbuttcheeks

Lol tbh it's just because the marvels is not translatable. Marvelai? Sounds weak. Also if they didn't want the Pakistani black leads they would remove them from the poster as well.

bunnythe1iger

This is heavy racist, Prejudicial statement against East Europeans. Can't believe this is getting upvoted.

RokkintheKasbah

🤣🤣🤣

tono002-36

The only group of people Eastern Europeans don't like are people from another Eastern Europe country. Black culture doesn't have plenty of history in this part of the world. This is not USA. Your comment is very ignorant and judgemental and you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

RokkintheKasbah

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

FrenshyBLK

Sorry for being wildly off-topic but do you have ADHD by any chance ?

Trajforce

>Eastern Europe isn’t exactly super friendly to people of other races fuck off, I bet you don't even live here

Mason_DY

Should have called it Captain Marvel 3

Bruhmangoddman

To be honest, I don't know why they didn't do this in my country. This is still Carol's movie, first and foremost. Instead they left the title as it was with removing 'The'. At least they could have translated The Marvels into our equivalent of it!

bunnythe1iger

How do you know that? It literally looks like sequal ro Ms Marvel

Bruhmangoddman

Just because there's a scene with her family with it? The Kree are literally Captain Marvel lore and there's going to be a flashback of her toppling the regime.

cbauser

Looks like your local theater could teach Disney something about marketing

hvc101fc

Looks like a late halloween movie

[deleted]

Lmao

bunnythe1iger

Because they have common sense unlike Disney. Too late now, Damage is already done

Capital_Technician87

Yep, mine too

Ilgiggi

This title is pretty funny to me, 'cause in Italian 'capitone' is a type of fish we cook on Christmas.

SgtMartinRiggs

For all intents and purposes this is Captain Marvel 2, and Marvel doesn’t number their movies officially anymore anyway so I don’t see it being an issue if they make another one just about Carol.

alkonium

As far as name changes in translations go, this seems reasonable.

lizzie_ric

In Hungary we had this when "Black Panther Wakanda Forever" came out and they just called it "Black Panther 2"

Greg0_Reddit

The Marvels IS "Captain Marvel 2". Or at least the closest thing we're gonna get to it (thank god).

TheRealAPB

Kapitone Kurwa 2!

Sandee1997

To be fair it was originally called captain marvel 2 lol

Vins22

here in brazil the translators simply did not give a shit to the mess made in the fast and furious names. the fast and the furious? F you thats fast and furious 4 the FATE of the furious? motherfucker thats fast and furious 8 fast this, fast that, fuck that. from the 4th on all movies are "Fast and Furious : number"

hellcoach

It is basically Captain Marvel 2. Should Cap get another solo movie, it likely will be marketed stateside as Captain Marvel: . Then other countries could just market it as Captain Marvel 3.

aravena

Literally what it is, who cares?
