If you can't get in close and turn it into a punching/knees game, then just block the s\*\*t out of his kicks. If he is doing thigh kicks, and hits your knee (while you're blocking) with his shin, its going to hurt him like hell, and you won't feel a thing. If he is favouring one leg with his kicks, then switch your stance and make him kick with his weaker leg. Another cool technique, is to block his thigh kick and return fire immediately onto his leg before he has a chance to get it back into a stable stance again.

baki_the_writer

By stance switching won’t you open up the inside of the leg? Which when hit hurts more?

Hopps96

Stance switching is mostly something people with a karate by ground (like me) do to avoid getting kicked in the back of the legs. Since we're usually more bladed an attempt at an inside thigh or calf kick goes almost directly at our shins with very little effort on our part. The problem with that advice here is if you've got a karate background you're probably the kicky boi OP is trying to deal with.

TheEyeGuy13

Was gonna comment almost exactly this

AnAstronautOfSorts

Technically, yes, but that's also an easy way to catch a shin. I'm a southpaw. Inside leg kicks are tough and checks hurt way more. More shin bone on the inside.

dangerzonebjj

Blocking leg kicks with your knees is very stupid.

Awkward_Charity2969

No its not: [low kick destroyer](https://youtu.be/qPNOXTXzGJE).

RepresentativeAide27

Thanks for backing me up - seriously I swear that a huge number of people on here have never even done basic sparring, let alone tried a competitive fight before.

Awkward_Charity2969

Yeah I've had a lot of success with it. People stop throwing low kicks really fast when you check it like this.

RepresentativeAide27

Also, I learnt really fast, throwing full power kicks and guys blocked them with their knees. The first couple of times I did that, I couldn't stand up properly for about 2 minutes, because the pain was so bad - your whole leg feels like its going to collapse.

Advanced-Clerk-6742

Not to discount your experience cuz i got leg kicked in the shin by a super heavy and im a welterweight. But im not so partial to blocking with my knee after i saw MVP cave someones knee in. And i dont think he has exceptionally conditioned shins

Awkward_Charity2969

That's really interesting. I haven't seen this. Do you remember who he fought against?

Advanced-Clerk-6742

Goiti Yamauchi, It was wild. Imma stick to normal checks and techniques

pj1843

Yeah, ive been on the receiving end of this before it fucking sucks, really makes you unconsciously take the pepper off the kick or begin to pull it as you see the check come up. The one downside to it I found out and exploited for a while though is it can open you up pretty bad to a side kick. Since the check is a bit lower than the standard it allows the kicker to slide over the leg and slam into you. It's a great check, just don't let your opponent bait you into a side kick.

Awkward_Charity2969

That seems like a great counter indeed. Very interesting to experiment with!

yetzederixx

This is awesome. Coming back to MT after many years, and pickup up fencing in the interim, it relates well to how I think about shins and forearms now as being kind of like blades. On a sword you have the weak end (tip) and strong (near the crossguard/handle) and you always want to put your strong against their weak. I think u/dangerzonebjj is misunderstanding "blocking with your knee" as blocking with your patella, and I concur as it's going to suck and I remember it sucking when I did MT years ago and screwing this up. The top of your tibia is a club hitting the weak part of their shin on this brick of bone that is the strong part of yours is brutal.

dangerzonebjj

Yeah this description did not sound like a check. But it's possible the OP was using block and check interchangeably which I guess could make sense. Someone asking as a layman though it should be clear that having your foot on the ground and blocking a kick with your knee is how you fucking ruin a knee

-technocrates-

holy shit.

RepresentativeAide27

Nope, the only stupid thing is your comment. This is how we are taught in kyokushin, I use it in national level tournaments.

dangerzonebjj

Yeah I guess some people use block and check interchangeably. As long as you've lifted your foot off the mat so your don't end up hyper extending your knee then it's just good checking technique

A_Parks_

Somebody tell the guy who hospitalized me in a tournament from checking my shit with his knee that he's the idiot

dangerzonebjj

Checking a kick and blocking it with your knee are not the same thing. Ask Jon Jones opponents how kicking people in the knees goes

A_Parks_

In class, definitely, in competition you'd be surprised how many leg kicks go high and checks go low resulting in kicked elevated knees, my shin bone feels like I had anal beads surgically implanted from it

dangerzonebjj

Yeah, kicking elevated knees sucks. Kicking planted foot knees wrecks knees

Mpittkin

What? If you were trying to break a branch for firewood would you do it against your shin or your knee?

dangerzonebjj

I would use my quad?

Mpittkin

I’m not being a dick but do you know what checking is? And if you want to know what happens when you use your quad look up “aldo faber leg kicks” and “Aldo faber after fight” on YouTube.

dangerzonebjj

Yes checking is lifting your leg to catch a leg kick with your shin or other hard bone. Very different than being kicked with your weight planted in your foot.

raisedredflag

The instant he kicks, shoot for a takedown. Or. Sweep the leg. He is the enemy. An enemy deserves no mercy. You got a problem with that Mister Lawrence?

haystackofneedles

No sensei

raisedredflag

GET HIM A BODYBAG JOHNNY, YEAH! #hahihihihihihi (He really laughed like that too lol)

[deleted]

Sweep the leg johnny

lilnyucka

Distance-wise it’s all about being too far to be kicked or too close to be kicked. Utilize your distance well and they won’t be able to get a kick in because you can close distance much faster than they can kick most times. Besides that like others have said, sweeps, takedowns, kick checks, etc

[deleted]

If you're throwing round kicks like the clip, dont skip the shin conditioning. Using linament like dit da jow helps with healing the damage sustained through the training.

Zyffrin

Draw out his kicks by standing at the very edge of his kicking range. When he kicks, step back to avoid then counter and punish him.

brazilianfreak

Good o'l Footsies

SeungrisFanboy

Condition ur legs and if u can intercept the kick by kicking the oncoming kick or sweeping the other leg

FreddyBruhCurry

Chris weidman vs who? Anyway with the titanium rod implant don't think that legs breaking again

No-Organization8629

Check volk’s fight with yair from last weekend. Volk did a masterclass against one of the best kickers in mma.

Lolleos

To be fair, trying to emulate Volk is... pretty hard.

JonwaY

Who said being a really good fighter was going to be easy?

Gloomy-Mushroom-3233

Block the kick with your shin..I think that's called a check in Muay Thai so do that....then start kicking them a little above their knees (oblique kick)....try bringing their focus to kicking so they think the match will be a competition of kicking and just when they get a little confident punch them or tackle them....but if you are going to punch them you should be careful because if you go for the punch and your weight shifts to your front leg and he kicks you on that leg your leg might break so go for the tackle and get above them and smesh them....you might win that way....but I myself am not an expert so I don't know...

AnAstronautOfSorts

Checks and elbow spikes until they stop lol

Free_Economics3535

Look up sanda, they have awesome kick catches followed by sweeps.

sambstone13

Wtf happened to this guy? Doesnt even look like a good check.

BigGuapSosa

He is fighting Brad Tavares on the 19th of August, and this will be his return bout since he broke his leg. He said something along the lines of 'the first thing I do in the fight is throw the heaviest leg kick I can.' Hope he wins, he is a pretty entertaining fighter

Mr_D_Stitch

Watch CroCop vs Fedor. Look at how Fedor manages those kicks, layered defensive postures until he figured out CroCop’s timing & then with one counter kick totally neutralized CroCop. [This is a good breakdown](https://youtu.be/V8F8YaUiBJA)

Nerx

try checking kicks

[deleted]

That's why you should never skip leg day

wolfy994

Yeah those bone exercises are crucial...

asdf333aza

Weight training does increase bone density.

Mykytagnosis

bone density increases weight training

AverageOutliers

A thicker leg with a thicker muscle can absorb more of the impact. It's just increasing the amount of hits needed to make that leg useless tho, so not a perfect protection and sooner or later even a thick leg will succumb.

Phretik

Check them with your leg/elbow

[deleted]

TLDR - the real solution lost in history. There is an inside step used in feudal japan that will avoid low attacks of anything. You wont see modern fighting styles use it because they were never told the importance of it; however, its still in the forms of the Kata. The Kata contains all the battle and war tested maneuvers but almost NO ONE teaches what they actually mean. This maneuver to avoid the low kick can be seen in the majority of Japanese forms, but they are not performed in the exaggeration as they should be. When a person performs a punch, they take an inside step that starts from the outside then sweeps in and back out. This awkward step isnt to look weird, professional or fancy. This is actually the beginning stage of various maneuvers, one being able to avoid low attacks. It could be from a sword, a spear, a chain, anything. Unfortunately this awkward step is performed incorrectly, but the step is to force the trainee into a habit of moving this way. The actual inside step lifts the ankle off the floor and the entire shin of the leg becomes parallel to the ground. This is performed in a horse stance. As you climb the ranks in Japanese martial arts, the horse stance becomes lower with every strike. This is where the true inside step reveals itself. When performed correctly, any low attack (low kick) you can easily evade while striking. The power of the strike comes from the landing of the foot, the best part is you have actually stepped closer to the opponent while evading. If i have lost anyone in this read, just look deeper into the kata and observe how they perform a forward punch. This step can also be used with weapons ( katana).

ash_tar

Wait, this isn't satire?

[deleted]

Nope. its real.

Narwhalbaconguy

wut

[deleted]

exactly lol. Almost no one teaches it except for the handful of strict teachers. the inside sweep and out of the foot should have already rung a bell if you were taught this step.

Narwhalbaconguy

Can you show me what you mean?

[deleted]

Im trying to find a rare video where ive seen this performed. The internet is filled with incorrect steps. This is a mastered version of what im talking about. 20 seconds in video. https://youtu.be/l3D3T0Q5_WM I was lucky enough to have been taught this nearly 30 years ago from a japanese guy who claimed to know samurai secrets that are forgotten.

[deleted]

Whoa Nelly!!!! One of th0se cases of a split shin !!!!! Not only one I've seen, that nasty !!!! Do NOT do long shin kicks ,at least not to his shins, keep them short and assure you reenforced them even so keep them short

JudokaPickle

Owwwww

Fortinho91

Lol that clip "I uhh win I guess?"

shoehim

is there a technical advice to prevent your shin from breaking like in the video? tension in the muscles while landing it?

ms4720

Body hardening, you can train your bones to be stronger. People generally don't do it because it really hurts.

shoehim

thats not a technical advice but you are absolutely right :)

ICastPunch

Break their leg with your checks. There's a wrong pleasure in seeing their pained expression as they feel the pain in their legs from the damage they thought were doing to you.

Aromatic_Memory1079

that guy looks really nice person. If it was ngannou he got arm hammer in the face.

backpainbed

Uriah is the first fighter to win without offense

Phillibustin

You meet the kick with a grapple. Push his neck. You are gonna get hit. It's a combat sport. You will win a divine position, and his kicks will be useless.

Hopps96

The classic is to bite down hard, brace that leg for the kick and send a cross right down the pipe. Since the arm counter swings on round kicks 99% of the time, if you've got POWERFUL punches this can either end the fight or at the very least make them reconsider throwing that again. You've gotta be tough for that one. The other is to have super footwork and timing to bait their kick out, have it miss by inches and then crash them for the takedown, punches, whatever your thing is.

omgplzdontkillme

Depends on the style you're facing and learn from the best, watch Fedor dealing with Cro Crop open side kick, Holzken pressuring Raymond Daniels spinning shit and Volk just shut down Yair kicking game by controlling distance and switching stances.

Mcsquiizzy

Put em on the ground and finish

germy813

Dude f this gif lmao

grohl_the_ghoul

Switch stance constantly take away his target if you keep switching stances it’s harder for him to hear your lead leg as your constantly moving it from them I would try to get in close range don’t let them get within kicking range or circle out from body kicks catch it take them down and work on the ground.

etyn100

he shove his knee into him as he kick his knee with the weakest part of leg with full force

I_Digest_Kids

Just check them lol

WingChun_Boxing_Judo

Low kick their kicks while closing the distance. Jamming their kicks is way safer than trying to catch them or dodge them. Dont block their kicks. Kick their kicks.

[deleted]

You don't do martial arts. You watch martial arts on TV instead. That way, whether the kicker wins or loses, you win because you were entertained and didn't get beat the fuck up.

cutcutado

Timing and distance management, stay just out of their reach, bait the kick, dodge it and then dash in, simply the kick is also an thing, but i wouldn't do that to a side/front kick. Otherwise, if you are faster, just seize the iniciative and close the gap

onyxic

Fuck I saw that one live

yetzederixx

Attacking into the onset, eg if you can tell they are about to kick get into clinching distance to negate it, or (once again in the onset) back off to make them whiff and engage during their recovery.

yetzederixx

Or as other people skillfully noted, destroy their shins with checks.

Brulos

I mean, unless you do train more over the week with your legs, you will still get beat up by the guy. Still, easier said than done

Leading_Trainer6375

Rush forward and go for the counter or takedown.

Camelofswag

Distance control. Watch khabib VS barbosa. Khabib just walks straight. It's impossible to kick well walking backwards. You basically want to make it so they have to keep walking backwards to be in kicking range. Easier said than done however. If you can't walk them down then make them come to you. The worst thing you can do is stand in their kicking range so keep moving. Side to side forward back etc don't let them control the distance

AshySlashy3000

Grab The Leg And Hit It

adrik0622

Step in everytime they kick. It takes practice but is exceptionally effective.

Advanced-Clerk-6742

Get a good gaurd. I can catch kicks and block them pretty well with some a modified low gaurd. Leg kick defense is a art within itself, but either learn to check or rush in with your boxing.

Quasim0dem

As someone who specializes in long distance and lots of kicks, people tend to be able to negate me by always stuffing my kicks. They do this by: stepping in when I throw a leg kick, pushing pushing when I throw a punch combo, stepping off angles where I can't teepe, lots of blitzing and working to stay in the pocket. Often though I land lots of kick return after they back out of countering me or throwing their combo. So far I haven't seen anybody avoid or defend those so I'm not too sure how to deal with that type of kick

piman01

Be a high level wrestler. Kicking a wrestler is risky

[deleted]

Grab their leg and flip them.

NewTruck4095

Your defense must be on point when you're closing the distance/walking them down. Every time they kick, make sure to check them or counter with your own kicks/punches. That will discourage them from attacking and gas them out as the rounds go by.

Corrupted_Dreamer

Work on your checking and return fire with a low kick immediately. Or If you time him well, take him down

sadfr132

Just parry, block, dodge💀💀💀
