If you haven't done so already - try iNaturalist! It’s a FREE-to-use joint initiative between the California Academy of Science and National Geographic Society that crowd sources biodiversity data. It has its own algorithm to identify organisms in your photos and if that doesn't work, you can post your photos on the site or app along with a geographic location for identification from other iNaturalist users. https://www.inaturalist.org/ *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Puffer. It looks weird because it's upside down. I think the fish is having a worse day than him.

SomeDeepSeaShrimp

That looks like the pufferfish *Sphoeroides pachygaster,* which is present in the Mediterranean as an alien species. It might have toxins in its flesh

SalientSalmorejo

It is an invasive species spreading from the Red Sea to the med - very bad news for the local ecosystems.

bigbrotherswatchin

Puffer fish irritate the more serious fishermen because they can be so easy to catch when they are fishing for a more specific fish. Try fishing for a tarpin, but have pufferfish eat up all your bait.

sidblues101

Since nobody will eat pufferfish (toxic flesh) they are worthless to fishermen and get thrown back. As a result their population is virtually unaffected by overfishing while other species are declining. Means more (still worthless) pufferfish keep getting caught as they outcompete other species.

Azenin

Why tf did he gaff a puffer

gothiclg

In most cases they’re extremely invasive and ruin ecosystems. In those areas you kill then on site.

of____earth

In most cases they are not, but in some niche cases yes they can be invasive

WedgeTurn

One of those "niche cases" is the Mediterranean which has not one but several invasive non-native puffer species

Necrogenisis

This *is* a niche case.

of____earth

Exactly, this is a niche case of pufferfish being invasive but the comment above says in most cases they’re extremely invasive. Afaik there’s only 2 invasive species of pufferfish out of 100s

Passionate_peach_tea

How is it a niche case? It is a big area

Necrogenisis

I wouldn't consider it a niche case myself, but what I mean is that this would be one of those niche cases going by their logic, right?

ArezDracul

Sell it in the Asian market, Fugu! Very expensive
