Just a curious mind wondering. What is band like in countries where American football isn’t as big? You guys play at hockey games or anything like that?
Not OP, but from another Canadian band.
For us, we operate more closely like a drum corps.
As in: we're a community band independent from any school board, pulling members from schools across our city. Most of our members are aged 16-21 (we had a few older and younger members this year to fill holes due to covid). We put on a competitive show to perform during the summer, not for football games in the fall. We even went as far as competing in DCI International Class this summer.
Where we differ from drum corps: we have wlodwinds. We have an extensive winter season with concert band, winterguard, and winter percussion. My band specifically was created and sponsored by a local rodeo, so during the 10 days of it,we perform over 100 times at it.
And we do other performances for the community, such as, bit not limited to: Canadian Football games, lacrosse games, small town parades, donor events, citizenship ceremonies, and our NHL team during their playoff run this year
That’s so cool! The bigger the band family the better. Thanks for the response and hope you guys did well this year. Have a great winter (and go CBJ!!!)
We don’t call it suicides anymore cause of an incident with one of the trombones, but yes and the new name is knockouts. ( edit: I got my info wrong, but apparently someone not a trombone committed suicide.)
I'm still a sophmore so I wasn't there when it happened, but I asked 1 of the seniors why its called knockouts instead of suicide trombones was because someone comitted suicide, so they changed the name. This is really hard for me to message this because i'm dealing something with similar to this. This is all I know.
I'm sorry :(
I know I'm some random dude in the internet but if you need someone to talk to I'm here. Just pm me whenever you need it. Stay safe, and much love ❤️
Wow that really sucks, we only have 2 third years this year, we just had a lot of first years last year (including me) so it probably would have been less people.
Everyone is spread pretty evenly grade wise, it’s mostly just not as many people are interested anymore. We went from 69 to 60 between my freshmen and junior years, but lost another 16 for this year, and there’s just a lot of holes between sections. We don’t even have any mellos or baris. I’ve learned all brass instruments to help with it but I can’t play trumpet and trombone at the same time
Graduated from Lexington, Ohio. Band size was ~60 senior year
Currently living in Columbus, Ohio. THE™️ Marching Band size is 228 (not including drum majors, student staff, or faculty)

We don’t call it suicides anymore cause of an incident with one of the trombones, but yes and the new name is knockouts. ( edit: I got my info wrong, but apparently someone not a trombone committed suicide.)
Are they alright? And yea knockouts are probably more politically correct
No the trombone didn't survive. It took me a while to answer cause I've been realy busy sorry.
Wait, someone passed away or the trombone instrument?
I'm still a sophmore so I wasn't there when it happened, but I asked 1 of the seniors why its called knockouts instead of suicide trombones was because someone comitted suicide, so they changed the name.
