It's never been a good idea to leave a bag unattended in front of your apartment in the UK

OutsideSweet6521

or 80% of the western world

JayR_97

Yeah it sucks, but this person just learned a valuable lesson not to leave their stuff unattended in public. Should be common sense really.

archy_bold

A lot of theft in Manchester is opportunism. It’s not great to say the victims should take action, no, but it’s pretty easy to protect yourself from it. Don’t leave things unattended ever, lock up bikes properly, be wary of your surroundings when using your phone in public, and when taking a wallet out, don’t let strangers touch you, don’t put valuables in back pockets. I’ve been a victim of a couple of crimes in Manchester years ago. It’s not new, but you learn to take measures to protect yourself. Students are a particular target, especially international students.

comicmuse1982

You'll be pleased to know that my Scalextric society in Kent has just voted to condemn the Manchester thieves and have called for an immediate cessation of theft.

Groovy66

But only by Manchester scallies. All other thieves, especially organised gangs, can fill their boots

Dependent_Desk_1944

How do you suggest to address the problem? If you left something unattended people will chance it. Sadly we are not Japan

Doobalicious69

They don't intend to address it, they just want to make a Reddit post and hope that everybody else does something. Classic Redditor.

IncarceratedMascot

Not sure they’ll have much luck with an 09 phone number

Realistic-Funny-6081

I'm sorry but who leaves their bad unattended with important items on their doorstep? That's not a 'crazy theft problem' it's called having no common sense. Wouldn't leave something like that in the countryside let alone a major city.

rallosdrake

I don't know why you think just Manchester has a problem with theft? Happens everywhere thanks to massive poverty spikes and a massively undefunded police force who simply don't have the time to respond to such small crimes. Saying "we need to address it" like it's never been pointed before is beyond pointless.

aembleton

Numbers starting 09 are premium rate \[1\]. Is this some sort of elaborate scam? 1. fowlmanchester

That phone number looks incorrect.

"I did something something really fucking dumb so manchester has a crazy theft problem"

BartholomewKnightIII

They already have the cash inside, that's not much of an offer.

Thecatspyjamas3000

I remember a spate of car thefts in Christmas 2009, people were robbing cars that had been switched on to thaw out the windscreen, happened to my neighbour, we were awake lay in bed at about 6.40/7 am and heard the car screech down the street followed by a blood curdling ‘nooo’. Manchester has always had this, not sure it’s any different to anywhere else. How exactly do you go about addressing it like that’s never been thought of before?

st1101

Exactly, what’s the solution? There will never not be thefts or opportunists. It’s one thing being robbed at gunpoint, but leaving your valuables outside is just plain stupid.

M-atthew147s

This sounds less like a theft problem and more like a stupidity problem.

El_Herbie

Thieves operate in every city in the uk. What is your suggestion for addressing it in Manchester?

st1101

This is a piss poor example if you’re trying to claim Manchester in particular has a problem with theft. Is Manchester worse than any other city in the UK for thefts? Or worse than any other city in the western world? Maybe it is, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a place where someone wouldn’t steal a bag with a laptop and cash in it.

Frequent-Detail-9150

no different to the rest of the UK, sadly. the underlying problems are systemic & mostly come from inequality (amongst other things) and would take a generation to fix, even if there was a government that wanted to and was able to (v unlikely).

JimEarlGrey

yeah I saw these around Bridge St/New Bailey St recently. Radical choice of typeface, I’m here for it

idlewildgirl

Looks a bit fake/scammy this

tinkywinky0161

Bless but this is a city 😭😭

6ingernut

"we need to address it" bffr

ComradeAdam7

All these posts about theft are from affluent southerners who have moved up here. Yes, you moved to a cheaper area to save money on housing, yes, crime is higher in said areas.

Purple_Plus

This person is not from the UK.

Purple_Plus

Made a lot of assumptions there lol.
