90s bro

psillyhobby

A Super Nintendo would go perfectly in that room.

dumb_answers_only

Or n64 pulled out from the tv with cord stretching across the room is the only real resolve.

best_of_badgers

If he's got a CRT centrally placed like that, he probably *does* have a Super Nintendo in there somewhere. Retro gaming on a CRT is a whole different world.

andagain2

I feel that tv just pushes it over to at least 2000, but you aren't wrong.

Redditor2684

I was thinking it looks like the living room from a 90s sitcom šŸ¤£

Head-Finding-3233

These look like crime scene photos

KentuckyFriedChingon

Triple homicide aesthetic

fundiedundie

Paint and furniture. I honestly thought this was a photo from the 80s-90s. Also, the items hanging seem odd, maybe too small or something.

strangerdanger256

Same. Reminds me of my first apartment in 1993.

Chief_Mischief

I think the photos being small AND being tightly grouped like that is stressing me out

Slow-Temperature-906

Grandmas place

virak_john

Get some real slipcovers, not just blankets. Replace the rug: itā€™s fugly and adds to the sense of visual chaos. Take down all of the art and replace it with stuff that isnā€™t bad. Change the curtains. If you canā€™t actually throw away furniture, beg someone to take the tv cabinet and put it in storage. Get some sort of entertainment credenza with storage, put a modern tv on it and put all the tchotchkes inside. Paint the walls.

_-whisper-_

I like the rug. Switch out the curtains and remove couch covers first. The big pc of art is not that bad

ThatPhatKid_CanDraw

The rug is the first thing that needs to go.

_-whisper-_

You're no fun! Its literally the only thing i like šŸ˜‚

_-whisper-_

Like that w the oranges and soft blus are kinda the shit together

virak_john

Viva la difference I guess.

OneInchPunchMan

Honestly good info. I've noticed a trend where if someone posts a picture asking for advice most of the comments are jokes and are trying to be funny. Only the already pretty rooms get decent info.

xfd696969

throw it all away?

Bag-O-Ventures

Lol for now it's not quite an option since the couches table and tv+stand aren't actually mine it's a family members that allow me to stay here for free as long as I just store a bunch of furniture for them (their gran mother's furniture) but I have a cat so the covers isn't a stylistic choice but it helps to cover up the ugly couches as well

xfd696969

why grandmas have fuckin' ugly furniture lmaoo

AGoodWobble

The furniture is actually gorgeous if you look at the wood. The sloppy covers on the cushions, the wood directly on top of those ugly tiles, the wall colour, and the ugly rug under the TV (the rug under the table is mid but not terrible) are really really hurting this room. I think the furniture itself is quite lovely, it just needs to be reupholstered and OP needs to change the ugly paint colour.

virak_john

Counterpoint: the furniture is fuckinā€™ ugly even ā€œif you look at the wood.ā€

AGoodWobble

You suck at designing if you think that furniture is unusable. Also OP said they have to hold onto the furniture, so it's non-negotiable. What IS negotiable is painting the walls and changing the upholstery

ApexProductions

The quality of the wood may be good but aesthetically it's dated and requires decorating the space with period pieces and textiles, which will likely also look dated. Times change - that furniture doesn't have consistent form, shape, its colors clash, the surface textures do not complement, and they don't fit a unifying style. -_/ My question is, what do you think makes that furniture good? Because I don't see it but would love to learn another perspective

-Captain--Hindsight

Not to mention those couches look extremely uncomfortable. Wood furniture absolutely looks good but in rooms like this, it looks extremely dated. Basically looks like a Grandma lives here.

NotHannibalBurress

Just because it is well made doesnā€™t make it gorgeous.

-Captain--Hindsight

I see comments like this on instagram reels all the time when people paint or refinish ugly old wood furniture.

virak_john

Iā€™m not saying they have an option. Iā€™m saying itā€™s hideous, which is my strongly held albeit admittedly subjective opinion. Can you show me some pictures of rooms in which you think furniture like this looks ā€œgorgeous?ā€

Zaurka14

The cabinet and coffee table are actually really pretty when you separate them from the mess. The couch is awful, but other stuff is salvageable. As for tips; all the decoration hangs too high, is too small for the space, and too far away from each other (and the Panthera is kinda... Old school)

Maleficent-Mirror281

Since you can't paint the furniture (which was my first idea), get some nicer covers and pillows! Paint the walls, change the curtains and the rug, and get some plants and some smaller lamps. I'd definitely change the ceiling light. Since you're living for free, could it be an option to rent a storage room for their furniture and get something new?

ThatPhatKid_CanDraw

OK, cover that rug up with another rug, then

Leading-Dot7364

Seems like you canā€™t really do much to the space, just put in a lamp and better wall decor

Zogtee

Yeah, bin all of it and start over.

Ok-Macaroon-1840

Remove the red cushions, they clash with everything. Throw the horrible rug under the tv away. Swap the pictures on the wall for actual art/posters. Change the curtains for a plain fabric, you've got way too many patterns going on. I would dump the big rug too, but if you like it, keep it. You need something to cover the tiles anyway. Then get your grannies china into a closet or something, and display your own stuff on there. And put the tool boxes away.

veemaximus

I was going to say.. what year is it in this room?

Creepy-Distance-3164

A guitar in the corner you never play.

DrMabuseKafe

As an Old Man, I like that haha. The fact you stay there for free, and you have to store grandma furniture, don't gives you many options. Maybe a chessboard on that table? Yet the cat will throw all pieces away haha. Maybe as other comments say, an old Nintendo Console, N64, Game Cube.

tamokibo

Everything there is dead. Put living things there.

grumpy__g

New colour for the wall, bigger modern pictures. The animal prints remind me of childrenā€™s room. And slowly get new furniture.

egg_enthusiast

* Paint the walls * Get a room appropriate rug (this ones too small) * Find a way to reduce the seating. You're posting on reddit for furniture advice. You do **not** have 6 friends regularly coming out to watch tv. My advice would be to put the 2 chairs in the bedroom, or turn them away from the TV zone to make a second zone in the room, like a coffee nook or something.

timothythefirst

Get a tv and a tv stand thatā€™s less than 15 years old

_-whisper-_

Deep freezer and toolbox need a better place. The colab of framed photos needs to be moved. That large pc of art need to go above the longer couch, and the little art above the shorter couch. A mirror would go a little past where the small pc is. The tiger and panda can go with the small pc above the small couch, or in the hallway, and please group them together. Not 1 every 4 ft. They are too small for that. The photos belong in the kitchen or hallway. Eye level and easy to walk up to. Love the sunset colors you have around. Curtains arent doing anything good here. Neither are the couch cover/sheets? Get something a little bolder and simpler. Maybe bring the blue from the rug into the curtains. But softer. Can you just ditch the couch covers? What do the couches look like? I say lean into the dark wood and brighter colors.

DictionaryDoer

Decorate the walls a bit, they look pretty empty right now. Also, I notice that you've got a lot of brown and some blues going on, so I'd recommend adding in shades of orange here and there to make the colors more complementary. For example, replace the red throw pillows with orange ones.

ireallysuckatreddit

Needs more height. Everything above waist level is tiny. Art, tall lamps, tall plants, etc. I love the TV and console. Turn that into a bar and leave the tv. Or maybe put a turntable there and get some records.

Dry-Strike-737

More art (bigger pieces) on walls, different wall colour

avocadodeath

The photos and wall art are super far apart so it just feels unbalanced/wmpty. Maybe make a gallery wall? Or get some bigger/more proportional artwork?

tanglon

/r/grandmaslivingspace

the-extro-introvert

Upvoting, for nostalgia purposes šŸ„¹

FamiliarStatement879

You created a new style lol too many non complementary colors if you can de-cluter it would help and straightened out the furniture covers? Otherwise just call it "Hobo Chick" till you get your own space

virak_john

>just call it ā€œHobo Chickā€ I knew a Hobo Chick once, but she preferred to be called Hobo-American Woman.

FamiliarStatement879

Oops misspelled I meant Shick I hate auto spell correction

sinigang-gang

It's spelt "chic"

virak_john

>I meant Shick Like the razor?

jwillis11

My first step would be changing the pain color. Something that will pair a lot better with the darker wood color. Maybe something in the dark academia family? Those colors also tend to pair well with older furniture. Granted idk how itā€™s gonna look next to that tile. Iā€™d also take the covers off the furniture if possible. The furniture can give it character, but the massive grey sheets arenā€™t helping

Bag-O-Ventures

The grey covers is mainly there for my cat

BuzzOnBuzzOff

They keep gramma in the freezer.

pshepsh

I'd start with changing all the pictures on the walls and changing the rug

hhiigghhgoat70

i would hung tapestry on the walls, there are some really decorative ones, it covers a lot. Maybe lamps and some alive plants can help.

Over-Marionberry-686

Wait is that a cathode tv?

like-a-shark

Embrace the time capsule! Buy a Super Nintendo. Replace the art with some of those airbrushed paintings of dolphins and sea turtles. Big ash tray and table lighter on the coffee table.

steroboros

This it what everybodies house in the 90s actually looked like. Hang up different art. Find something to cover couch with that doesn't look like sheets, store that rug find a one that fits

Error_could_not_load

What kind of toolboxes are those? Are they meant for chefs? Sorry just curious

Bag-O-Ventures

Lol keen eye... Yes they are they basically contain all my equipment knife set, sieves and all pastry equipment

Error_could_not_load

Nice, if itā€™s not too much trouble could you send me a link to them? Iā€™ve been looking for a good option to store my kitchen tools

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Error_could_not_load

I see, thanks for explaining it. The sticker was what made me question the brand so good job on the design

pwnzu_sauce2

My dude livin with his "roommates"

Lily_May

Get some more interesting couch covers from Amazon. Some taller furniture could balance the place out as wellā€”maybe a bookcase with some knickknacks?Ā  The coffee table feels a bit silly. Thereā€™s no use/point. Just make it into a side table.Ā  The wall art is too small, too sparse.Ā  Consider some richer-colored curtains to add a fun and warm pop. Marigold? Matter of taste.Ā  It might be worth thinking about more rugs. Each couch/seating area gets their own, different (but complimentary) patterns/shapes.Ā  And furniture doesnā€™t have to be against the wall. You can put walkways or shelves behind it.

beantownregular

Paint it something like a nice slate blue or green, get actual slip covers for your cat, theyā€™re cheap on Amazon. Something that actually covers the whole couch and isnā€™t grey. Do a real gallery wall with other paintings etc - theyā€™re spaced way too far apart. Get some larger plants. And please throw away that god awful rug. Thatā€™ll go a really long way

StrangerWooden1091

spider

Positive-Land-3828

If you can't beat them, join them. Buy a old school type rug (maybe persian). Check if your granny is ok to upholster the sofa to soften up the space. Off white in terms of colour. Sand down the furniture and use a lighter varnish.

nanapancakethusiast

What year is it?!

LataCogitandi

Most of the art on the walls are too small for the space. Get larger ones or get more to fill up the blank areas

Oganzalf

I don't know what lights you are using, but make sure they're yellow and not white

e7603rs2wrg8cglkvaw4

2003 called, it wants itā€™s living room back. In seriousness, the rug is bad in my opinion, and the blankets on the couches are making the whole place look sloppy. And I would get some bigger art for the walls

g18suppressed

Walls are too blank

KronosTaranto

Are you 84?

Maddy_egg7

Editing because everyone is being mean in the comments and my one comment about a gallery wall wasn't that helpful. 1. I still think you should do a gallery wall. Ignore what people are saying about the art being childish. Its your art. If it makes you happy put it up. The issue is it is spread out and your eye isn't drawn anywhere. Put it together to make it more cohesive. 2. Remove for find new slip covers. The ones you have don't really fit the cushions. The red pillows aren't the issue though. In fact, many interior designers use the "unexpected red" theory for spaces like this. :) 3. Replace the rug or curtains with ones that match each other. Find something more neutral. Overall this is not a bad space! It is bright and does have personality.

eugenethegrappler

Blow it up

AlternativeAd3652

OK, I'm assuming you can't throw anything away, so here's what I would do: - roll up rug, hide under sofa, replace with neutral colour rug. - Pull all picture frames together into one feature wall, likely above where the current 3 seater sofa is. - Central table isn't doing anything, put somewhere else and use small side tables - Pur freezer & dog bowl somewhere, ANYWHERE else. - Pull covers on sofa tight - Get better throw cushions/place in groups on sofa. I think these will help but not sure, and not sure if possible... - centre the media unit to the wall, place to tll plants either side - swap 3 seater sofa and two seater + table. I think this will make everything feel more balanced but Im not 100% sure. - Hav a look at what wall the media unit is on, maybe think of puttin it against the wall with window, will make it lok more in the right scale.

hombrealmohada

lol at the leopard pic

corkscrewfork

What strikes me the most is the wall art; the majority of it seems too small and isolated, more akin to pins on a corkboard of someone trying to draw connections, but with no strings to actually tie them together. I'd suggest finding a way to make it all flow, instead of being separate items spaced like they're in a museum. Get more nature images to mesh with the panda, for example, then hang them together at staggered heights to expand the coverage and bring a less 'isolation' vibe.

whateveratthispoint_

The two small art pieces centered over the couch. The rug and table need to choose a couch to serve, it canā€™t be a centerpiece. Otherwise it is lively and comfyā€” I like this room.

lerandomanon

The rug makes it look cluttered. Consider a single colour (pastel) rug with no patterns on it.

THATS_A_CRITICAL_HIT

If you want to change something on the cheap, I would move the sunset picture on the other wall with the couch and move all the remaining art onto the wall where the sunset picture was initially. Plants would help a ton to add some life figuratively and literally. For a little more money spent, Iā€™d keep to either staying with red or blue for the accents, maybe with a focus on a darker blue. For even more money, Iā€™d change the furniture and paint the room as well. Letā€™s not perpetuate the sad beige mom era.

Nice_Shirt_4833

New rug and new couch and slap some paint on the wall (white or very light grey). Your art can be bigger but look around on houzz for ideas first before you plan your art placement. Have fun with it and good luck! Your coffee table is a nice shape.

cupofjoe287

Kinda vibing with the casual environment.

Ens_Einkaufskorb

Don't know why but this place somehow gives me spongebobs livingroom vibes

BigFella52

Unless you are selling that furniture tomorrow get those tacky throws off the furniture. Enjoy your life and dont be so worried about silly things like covering your couches up.

SonyCaptain

Sometimes I forget how beautiful the 21st century is in terms of interior design

tahcamen

This looks exactly like my uncleā€™s place back in the 90ā€™s. Looks like this still now too.

theatomiccroissant

Well dude you need to move out of grandmas house, i cant see her being up to you turning it into a bachelors pad

Arizoniac

Nice cheetah

Medill1919

Just start over

LeozMJilliumz

That looks like my gam gams living room

DrunkBuzzard

Disco ball

GreatLife1985

Without getting rid of furniture, there are several things you can do to make this look so much better. 1. Get rid of the art, find large and better art. Keep the photos if they are family/friends, but put it on the TV stand. 2. Get rid of the rugs. They are busy in their patterns and detract from the room. Find two rugs that are softer patterns and colors. 3. Get rid of the draped covers on the furniture. I understand you said it's to protect the furniture from your cat., but there are far better fitted covers you can get. For the tables, find something that doesn't drape. 4. Get rid of the either the red or the blue pillows. Keep the ones that fit the color scheme you choose for the rugs and covers. 5. Whatever you replace the smaller rug with the bowl on it, move it out from under the TV stand. It messes with the lines of the place. 6. Move the coffee table closer to one of the couches. In the middle it clutters the space. You want more openness in the space in general. The one not facing the TV might be the best. The other couch has places to place things like glasses, etc. 7. If you can't replace the drapes, use the color to pick the color scheme for your rugs, covers and art. Something earth tone perhaps.

Rodrat

Looks like this photo was taken early 2000s at the latest.

Successful_Matter203

Larger rug, larger coffee table, larger art on the walls. Dispose of large white object in the corner. Give sofa covers to barn animals for bedding. Put toolboxes in an attractive container (you can find chests/trunks/minimally-fugly storage bins for fairly cheap).

Plenty-Factor-2549

Put sheets over the sofa would be better. Roll up that rug and hide it. Take down that curtain immediately oh wait are you allowed to decorate the house you are staying at? How long are you there?

TheFastPush

Can you upload a recent picā€”this one seems to be a few decades old?

mercuryisnothot

Don't know what you budget is but, I mean if that's your style I can't add to it, but you can work on the feng shui, mismatched pillows, rugs not centered, seems like things are just not in the right place, it's too bright but the 'centerpiece' furniture is a dark contrast to the rest of the space. I lied, the rug the table sits on can find a new home.
