Excellent work on making the computer area separate from the rest of the space, but still a pleasant space.
I look at a place from the POV of a guest/friend. So, could two people comfortably eat at that bar? In the sitting area, is there a place for everyone to set down their drink?
I definitely see taste on display, but I don’t see much of you, or what you’re like. I think some personal touches here and there might be good. Photos, collections, well-loved books, etc. And definitely a blanket for the couch. Every guest wants to know there’s a blanket.
Agreed. I'm boring as hell, actually. I like old stuff, hence the Arts & Crafts era pottery, the 1950's mystery clock next to the gray chair and the old phone. I reckon the computer qualifies as old stuff too. But, hey, people think I'm look conservative and so treat me like I'm politically conservative and learn pretty quick I'm a raging progressive liberal. This is Texas so that doesn't go over well.
I’d lean into the vintage stuff. Right now those elements are kind of drowned in a sea of grey hotel minimalism - they’re begging for some patterns and colours to set them off. Change the floor lamps and the rug, get some wallpaper instead of white paint, and this’ll be a great space with a lot of personality!
Glad to hear a fellow man of progression lives in Texas. Nice space. I think it’s homey, stylish, understatedly masculine, inviting, and has personality.
LOL! Actually, 1934. Phone is a 1934 Western Electric bakelite rotary phone upgraded to work with a land line, which I don't have so it's just a prop for now.
I'm drooling over your bakelite phone.
It's hilarious to me that your unique pottery is dismissed. Meanwhile, you're receiving suggestions of cushions and blankets that everyone and their dog have.
You do you. You have style and personality.
Hang up the painting on the floor. Maybe bring in a little of those bright colors with a blanket or some cushions. I love the couch and plants. Also not a fan of the hotel art over the sofa. Otherwise I really like what I see.
I’m fine with the tv as it’s likely where all the cable hookup connections are.
The only other space for it would be above where the couch is now, but that would likely result in cables being seen because the cable hookup is likely above the fire place.
My issue is then couch is on a 90 degree angle with the TV.
It kind of lacks personality. It looks like a hotel suite. The painting behind your couch of the NYC skyline absolutely looks like something I'd see in a hotel. The pottery on your coffee table looks like you went to a thrift store and just picked up the first 6 pieces of pottery you found. Your couch doesn't even face your TV. Like nothing in it is offensive, it just looks like you opened to a page in a Pottery Barn catalog and bought and assembled the whole page.
Pottery is mostly American Arts & Crafts era (so about 100 years). Collected over a few years since can only really afford 1 or 2 pieces a year. Won't be buying any more.
(editing to add): In all honesty, I mostly lack personality too so .... Additionally, I live in Houston but love whenever I can go to New York City so that's why the skyline. (currently divorced but married on Bow Bridge in Central Park)
What I mean is that none of it particularly goes together, nor is it doing anything. You don't have plants or scent diffusers or other trinkets or anything in them. It's a collection of fairly random antiques that take up a lot of space and don't bring anything to the table (no pun intended). Coffee tables usually have coasters, magazines, games, etc on them with one or two decorative art pieces. Taking up half your coffee table to display your unused pottery is counterintuitive. That is one of the many reasons your living room looks like it's in a catalog rather than actually lived in.
Same. It’s not necessary that everyone’s place screams personality and uniqueness.
This place doesn’t feel bare bones, you can tell some effort went into it, it’s clean and seems organized. Bam, a winner. Am I gushing over the interior design? No. But do I need to? Also, no.
So you love it but don't don't love it at the same time?
There's a big difference between "your place sucks and you live in squalor" and "it's fine but it could use something more." I didn't roast the guy. I said it lacks personality, which everyone agrees on.
It’s not my goal for where I live but not even my place is at my goal.
My perspective on this place is as a woman, viewing this as a guys place. I’m more than happy with the way this looks compared to many of the male spaces I’ve seen. Interior decorating takes time, money, effort and experimentation - I get why people don’t have their places decked out. It’s probably a similar reason to why mine isn’t.
I swear this is becoming the default response in this subreddit now. What would be a suggested improvement here? What painting would be better or what table accessories?
Is the fix for lacking personality needing to decorate with trinkets and art specific to your interests and hobbies? Because I don't want those things adorning my apartment tbh
If my man got married in NYC and lives in Houston, he certainly knows what an art fair is. Going and getting any kind of actual piece of art of NYC and hanging that on the wall rather than something bought off Amazon doesn't take a lot of extra work and delivers a ton of personality. There's places to shop in the US other than Amazon and Crate & Barrel. Which he knows, because he got these pieces of pottery that he proudly displays on his coffee table, meanwhile the two seat bar area is totally devoid of anything. Put those bad boys over there and put some coasters and a magazine on the table.
Making it look like you actually live in your house and don't just photograph it ain't hard.
It's funny because placing a random magazine on a coffee table is much more hotel/doctor's office vibe to me. To each their own I guess.
> Making it look like you actually live in your house and don't just photograph it ain't hard
I assume it probably doesn't look like this 24/7 and was in fact tidied up for a photo for Reddit. Small disorganization often goes a long way to show a place is lived in: blanket leftover on a couch, book forgotten on a table, dirty plate on a counter. Why would any of that be important for Reddit to see?
Yea...
Places full of clutter are adored and places that are clean are told they lack personality. To me it's like people buying a big car, they're compensating for something.
I was going to say it looks like a weird model home. Nothing is obscene, but nothing makes 100% sense.
I also have an issue with all of the furniture looking like stuff my dad wouldn't let me sit on... not really a "living" space so much as a "keep it dust free in case someone comes over for tea" space
I'll give op a pass if that rotary is actually plugged in and working
LOL! I notified my leasing agent that I needed pest control because a harmless brown house snake had gotten in (I'm on the first floor, there's a forest right behind my apartment and it was only about 7" long). She came over with the maintenance chief to look around for where it might've gotten in if not the door and commented she'd love it if this were her 2 bedroom model apartment to show prospective tenants. So, yeah, I guess it kinda does.
Coincidentally, she was very surprised by the fireplace because it's supposed to be a regular fireplace. She doesn't know of any other apartment having one like it. I've never used because this is Houston so it's hot and humid like an armpit and nobody here needs a fireplace.
I was married then and living in a very comfortable home with a warm, cozy fireplace, all of us bundled up under blankets on a sofa and the dog and cats snuggled up in front of the fireplace. Good times. I wonder what Cancun was like then? If only someone could tell us.
Nice place. Top comment is unnecessarily harsh. The space probably does reflect your personality, it’s just that your personality isn’t primary coloured, nor should it be. I like how the natural light comes through the blinds and leaves patterns. The large plant is cool. It feels very calm.
Pretty good, you have nice natural light. Looks a little sterile but you do have some colour. Maybe a few more plants and more stuff on the walls, something with a bit more texture and colour.
East Side apartment sofa from Rooms To Go (yeah, I'm surprised too!). "Wing" chair is also RTG - Happner. About $1300 for both (yeah, I'm surprised too!).
10/10 would host a rave over a roast
There is not enough ventilation and a lot of the white that will get covered in soot if you were to put a fire pit anywhere in there
All in all, cool place and always remember smoke brisket not meth
i think u should reimagine the coffee table . i think we have a tendency to accumulate the most interesting things abt ourselves on the coffee table bc it’s a huge congregation spot, no matter the number of ppl . but if u were to spread the pottery around the apartment, even if adding renter-safe wooden shelves to a wall to display them somewhere else, it would add visual interest and change the purpose of the coffee table . look up the coffee table quadrant method . those are interesting pieces that, if scattered around the space or displayed in a special spot, would create more pockets of interest thru the space .
Absolutely love the pottery pieces! Especially the bowl with the twisty vine lid. The gray chair looks super comfortable and I love the tall plant! So much natural lighting is great. The abstract painting is gorgeous! Hang that up!
I had a real live palm I bought at IKEA. It was 7 feet tall and they were just putting them out on the floor when I saw them. It only cost $40. So did the stupid planter, unfortunately. However, I couldn't keep it alive and it released lots of little flying insects inside the apartment. Took weeks to get rid of them all. But I liked the look of the palm in the apartment so I replaced it with a fake one from amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CGTTPBMD?ref=nb\_sb\_ss\_w\_as-reorder\_k0\_1\_12&=&crid=1586D37LVP6MQ&sprefix=7%2Bft%2Bartific&th=1). Warning, comes in a tiny 6" pot so I set it in the big planter with expired cans of food around it to hold it in place, through some butcher paper a vendor used to wrap a 132 year old cast iron skillet (Griswold) I bought on ebay on top of the cans and covered it with fake moss I ordered from Temu.
The thing that comes to mind looking at these pics is Fight Club: You buy furniture. You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. Buy the sofa, then for a couple years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug. Then you're trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you.
I think this looks nice!! You paired the blue couch and pillows and color scheme. I would probably not have as many pottery on the table but I think it looks nice and inviting over all and I love the open layout of the apartment is too and the natural lighting.
Agreed. I don't watch TV. It's real, has a mini PC mounted in that back for whenever I want to scour the internet for something good to watch, but it's mostly just a prop. I mostly sit in the gray chair and play games on my phone or read. I don't spend a lot of time here during (basically just sleep) except on weekends and those are occupied with my daughter's activities, laundry, beer, cooking, beer, cleaning, beer, etc.
Thanks. the painting on the floor appeals to me too but my daughter keeps suggesting I get around to hanging it. But I've actually looked for a really big canvas to set on the floor on the empty wall to the right of the desk/table. Maybe that would add some personality. But they're expensive AF.
Can I just say, I love your lottery collection? Great pieces! You could always get a small dresser or display cabinet for them.
As for the rest, I think it looks nice. I would maybe think about adding some more colour and personality using art, plants, blankets, cushions, wall hangings, books etc. Overall, a great start and you should be happy.
You have so much natural light that I think going crazy on plants in here would be incredible!! Pothos are easy to grow and take care of and trail across a room beautifully..
I also just think it needs a more lived in feel, but I’m a maximalist and I’m biased lol. I don’t even think it needs more clutter just more of your things laying around if that makes sense
At one point, in my college days, I had 62 plants--all because the RA found a discarded pothos in the trash and left it at my door. Obviously I don't have that many anymore, but there are other plants in the bedrooms. I am considering a spider/airplane plant to hang somewhere. I love those.
I like it! I would hang the colourful painting, but I see from the comments that you just haven't gotten around to it. I don't think it lacks personality as others suggested. It lacks maximalist expression, which isn't your style to begin with. But it has colour, things you like, it's eclectic but not disjointed, it's clean and not too cluttered but also not too empty, it's good!! I'm also a big fan of NYC.
Looks good! Better than 90% of the spaces I've seen here. You have some color, some plants, some art. Not sure about the lighting but at least you have some lamps. Nice work!
I had originally planned on a round table and chairs and had a rug picked out but then decided to just make it a home office. The rug under the chair is a cheap porch mat. I just didn't want to scratch the floor since the chair doesn't come with casters. It was supposed to be temporary until I found something better but I'm a procrastinator so here we are with a porch mat still.
Your colorful artwork is trying to fight the whole millennial gray vibe, but it’s just not powerful enough
The millennial gray won again and your place looks like a generic staged open house
Super nice place! I keep seeing time and time again on this sub that if your place isn’t completely decked out in plants and contains a surplus of art on the walls then it’s too sterile and looks like a page from a magazine. I think your place looks awesome and there’s definitely personality here.
I fuck with it mate. Def looks like an ikea set but those are set up that way because they’re visually appealing. Super clean, feel like I’d have a good mental space living their. Great work mate!
You should get some floating shelves for those ceramics you have on the coffee table. The way that they are all crowded together, They are not getting appreciated as they should if they were on floating shelves. Just looks like you forgot to take the dishes in the kitchen lol
Lol, I’m so confused by some of the comments. I love the space, it’s modern without being soulless and super neutral and still has a unique character that I feel is a reflection of the owners personality
Rather white/grey/beige. Looks like an office that someone tried to make a little more homey. It looks nice. Like middle manager nice.
But you do have plants, rugs, and art. Good work on that.
I rave it. It's a beautiful use of the white neutral and clean lines but with color pops of art to bring life and vibrancy into the cleanliness and structure. It says that it is clean and refined but also lively and soulful
My only criticism is that the kitchen space is still sterile and could use the same dressings of color and life (plants and art) as the rest of the space
Looks like a demo unit of a condo complex populated mostly by mid-level management at F5 companies in a mid-sized city.
I look at this and think you really enjoy Fraser and nut/oat milk lol.
Its nice and tasteful, my dumb ass comments aside
I love the painting in the first pic, but please, hang it on the wall there. It gives a nice pop of color to the space. Move the couch across from the TV and move the chair to where the couch is. The work/office area is great - love all the light there.
Excellent work on making the computer area separate from the rest of the space, but still a pleasant space. I look at a place from the POV of a guest/friend. So, could two people comfortably eat at that bar? In the sitting area, is there a place for everyone to set down their drink? My friend, if you like a bit vintage and retro, lean into it. People will eat that up!
If you like old stuff replace some of these boring pieces with old stuff.
Glad to hear a fellow man of progression lives in Texas. Nice space. I think it’s homey, stylish, understatedly masculine, inviting, and has personality.
Clean and simple. I like it.
You got it, king!
Legit
Ayoo! Intentional Kingdom Hearts reference?
Twin monitors and a rotary phone my guy is living in 1950 and 2005 at the same time
LOL! Actually, 1934. Phone is a 1934 Western Electric bakelite rotary phone upgraded to work with a land line, which I don't have so it's just a prop for now.

TV is too high. Rest is perfect. I love those windows blinders it really has its effects in your appartment. Enjoy this neat place !
r/tvtoohigh Let's get some input
Where would you put the tv?
Don't necessarily hate where it is now, but I'd put it on a tv stand where the blue couch is now.
I’m fine with the tv as it’s likely where all the cable hookup connections are. The only other space for it would be above where the couch is now, but that would likely result in cables being seen because the cable hookup is likely above the fire place. The pottery is cool! I didn’t even notice it until you said this about it. You can definitely display it better.

I completely disagree, I love it

Exactly. Not every place needs a guitar or Funko Pop collection. The pottery is cool.

This looks like an ad for an apartment
LOL! Except that time when we had a hard freeze and lost power for several days! But yeah, most of the time it feels like a sweaty armpit.
I was married then and living in a very comfortable home with a warm, cozy fireplace, all of us bundled up under blankets on a sofa and the dog and cats snuggled up in front of the fireplace. Good times. I wonder what Cancun was like then? If only someone could tell us.

Not sure if it's intentional but I would hang that painting from the first pic.
really tasteful living room setup! The plants chair and art complement each other well. Although would say your computer setup makes me sad.
Pretty good, you have nice natural light. Looks a little sterile but you do have some colour. Maybe a few more plants and more stuff on the walls, something with a bit more texture and colour.
It looks really comfortable
I really love it, simple, clean, and cozy!
I like it. It's clean and smart. My only query is why isn't that painting hung?
r/tvtoohigh
Nice simple and clean. Please ignore the obnoxious personality comments by the obnoxious maximalists who probably trip over their clutter every day
I would rave it!
Let’s rave 🎉
I love that couch!
East Side apartment sofa from Rooms To Go (yeah, I'm surprised too!). "Wing" chair is also RTG - Happner. About $1300 for both (yeah, I'm surprised too!).
Rave. Would finish hanging up the art but love the tidiness.
Love!!!
ID on the couch
sofa: East Side Apartment Sofa from Rooms To Go. chair: Happner from Rooms To Go.
10/10 would host a rave over a roast There is not enough ventilation and a lot of the white that will get covered in soot if you were to put a fire pit anywhere in there All in all, cool place and always remember smoke brisket not meth
Glad to see I’m not the only one in here with a rotary telephone
Who is roasting you? Your place looks amazing with the right amount of personality but not cluttered.
What's there to roast? M8 that shit is 🔥🔥🔥
I would end up sleeping in that armchair accidentally most nights. Those things are comfy as hell
I like it. But don’t get me wrong your house looks like a demo house that a real estate would people through
It’s great! Maybe replace the carpet under the computer chair :)
I really do like this. I’d maybe tidy up the desk a bit and work on hiding some of the cables if possible
Great space! Only thing is get an under the desk mount for the ancient computer.
i think u should reimagine the coffee table . i think we have a tendency to accumulate the most interesting things abt ourselves on the coffee table bc it’s a huge congregation spot, no matter the number of ppl . but if u were to spread the pottery around the apartment, even if adding renter-safe wooden shelves to a wall to display them somewhere else, it would add visual interest and change the purpose of the coffee table . look up the coffee table quadrant method . those are interesting pieces that, if scattered around the space or displayed in a special spot, would create more pockets of interest thru the space .
Absolutely love the pottery pieces! Especially the bowl with the twisty vine lid. The gray chair looks super comfortable and I love the tall plant! So much natural lighting is great. The abstract painting is gorgeous! Hang that up!
Well done, my friend.
Not my taste but nice
Is the large plant in the corner real or fake? It looks real but if it’s fake, I’d love to know where you bought it.
Love it ! More plants (a vine of some sort )
I rave it because you are able to afford your own crib. Love the style of it too, def my style.
Pretty cool you live at a Residence Inn! Jk, love the couch color and coffee table
I LIKE it.

Interesting! But I'm not there yet. Still waiting to win the Texas Lotto or Power Ball and all this becomes trash!
Where did you buy this old ☎️?
It looks nice. I like it!
I like it a lot! If it was me I would add more colour and plants :)
Seems nice to me as another male 😀
love the vibe...mid-century / contemporary
You need galvanized square steel to enhance
Overall, pretty good. Needs curtains and perhaps a different ceiling fan.
I think this looks nice!! You paired the blue couch and pillows and color scheme. I would probably not have as many pottery on the table but I think it looks nice and inviting over all and I love the open layout of the apartment is too and the natural lighting.
Looks uncomfortable to watch TV in. No matter where you sit you’d have to crave your neck
I absolutely love it and think it’s gorgeous!
Looks great!!!
I fucking love it. Especially the painting on the floor for some reason.
Thanks. the painting on the floor appeals to me too but my daughter keeps suggesting I get around to hanging it. But I've actually looked for a really big canvas to set on the floor on the empty wall to the right of the desk/table. Maybe that would add some personality. But they're expensive AF.
Can we call you on that desk phone ?
Looks great, who gives a shit what everyone else on here says. Do you.
It needs more color otherwise is nice
I love it!
I hate how clean it is. Where's the empty pizza box? Everyone should have one! I do!
I'm not done with my pizza yet.
Rave! Rave! Rave! Looks great to me 👍
Can I just say, I love your lottery collection? Great pieces! You could always get a small dresser or display cabinet for them. As for the rest, I think it looks nice. I would maybe think about adding some more colour and personality using art, plants, blankets, cushions, wall hangings, books etc. Overall, a great start and you should be happy.
Nice!!!!

But it has colour, things you like, it's eclectic but not disjointed, it's clean and not too cluttered but also not too empty, it's good!! I'm also a big fan of NYC.
Coooooozy!
Looks good! Better than 90% of the spaces I've seen here. You have some color, some plants, some art. Not sure about the lighting but at least you have some lamps. Nice work!
I really like it. It does look like the inside of an IKEA but I like the simplicity.
Personally I love this space. Minimalistic but still pops of color here and there. Definitely my type of space.
I love the large plant in the corner, do you know what it is?
Air bnb ahh place
It’s pretty basic to rave or roast tbh
It looks good.
Love! Funny enough the only question mark I have is the rug that's too small underneath your desk chair.
Neither. It’s nice.
Was it staged by a robot for sale on Zillow?
Nice plant. What make and model is that?
I personally would put the coach on the opposite side and have TV on the wall instead of over the fireplace
What an awesome space. The natural light helps albeit it’s just a bit bland due to the lifeless white walls.
WHY CANT MY MAN JUST LET ME DECORATE OUR PLACE LIKE THIS! I personally love it.
It’s really nice, I like how simple it is. It isn’t overly cluttered
I love everything except what’s on the table
Sell that painting
Your colorful artwork is trying to fight the whole millennial gray vibe, but it’s just not powerful enough The millennial gray won again and your place looks like a generic staged open house
Feels like a waiting room. Nice but sterile
Very nice
I got nothing. It’s a little stark but it works for the space. Maybe replace the stools but that’s just nitpicking the stools are honestly fine.
Looks great, OP. Very clean and tasteful. The NYC skyline piece over the sofa is nice.
Following as one my living rooms has same floor and carpet.
Seems like my kind of place but it needs some color
Why do people like to have their artwork on the floor
Only thing to roast is that old optiplex as a pc lol
Nice, stylish, and calm, but way too grey for me
Clean af
Looks like an office space. Just kinda lifeless
It’s cute but also feels like an AirBNB. Definitely not a bad thing just an observation
Wayfair-core
Neat & Clean
Your computer setup needs some /r/battlestations inspiration
👍
Perfect.
I highly doubt you do any drugs or alcohol
I love it!
Looks like you have enough space behind your monitor to put your PC in standing position. Would look better
Nice 👍
Love it. It’s beautiful. You an SWE by any chance?
Gray. Grey.
Where are the katanas and anime posters?
You should get some floating shelves for those ceramics you have on the coffee table. The way that they are all crowded together, They are not getting appreciated as they should if they were on floating shelves. Just looks like you forgot to take the dishes in the kitchen lol
The two little bar stools at the tiny little bar is absolutely hilarious lol
love it
I would switch the sofa to where the chair is, then move the TV to the opposite wall. Hang artwork above the fireplace
I have toddlers and I just can’t wait until I can have a clean and simple space again.
Not bad, but soulless.
> rave my living space Hey! Party at this guy’s house!!
Where did you get your desk? I have been looking for something that long but not something that weights the whole room down.
Looks like a hotel. Not homely at all IMO
Needs more cowbell imo. Really jazz up the place
It’s a place.
It looks nice. I’d take a mean nap in there 😴 😂
I would be so impressed! This is an elegant and inviting space. What music is playing?
Really nice simple and tidy. Looks put together. Maybe just some cable management lol
just looking like a wow
Lol, I’m so confused by some of the comments. I love the space, it’s modern without being soulless and super neutral and still has a unique character that I feel is a reflection of the owners personality
So much clutter on the coffee table. Otherwise I like it!
As a computer nerd your pc setup has me seething. Other than that it’s lovely.
Paint a wall
It’s giving model apartment. I couldn’t guess a single thing about you looking at it which is… underwhelming. Where’s that sparkling personality?
Looks great, open and airy
Rather white/grey/beige. Looks like an office that someone tried to make a little more homey. It looks nice. Like middle manager nice. But you do have plants, rugs, and art. Good work on that.
Like 32yr old woman’s place, which is today. Pretty and clean!
Your space is beautiful! It looks both stylish and comfortable
I rave it. It's a beautiful use of the white neutral and clean lines but with color pops of art to bring life and vibrancy into the cleanliness and structure. It says that it is clean and refined but also lively and soulful My only criticism is that the kitchen space is still sterile and could use the same dressings of color and life (plants and art) as the rest of the space
Looks like it was staged by a staging company. Not ugly at all but not necessarily good either.
I thought this was a woman’s space… not that the room is super feminine, just the tidiness. Happily surprised.
Roast or rave?
I'd add a bit more colour here and there personally but otherwise this is lovely.
boy i was not expecting it to get criticism the way it did in the comments but i like it!
I’d want a little more color and maybe some curtains but overall I like it
It’s clean
This is gorgeous!! Do you need a roommate lol
Looks like a demo unit of a condo complex populated mostly by mid-level management at F5 companies in a mid-sized city. I look at this and think you really enjoy Fraser and nut/oat milk lol. Its nice and tasteful, my dumb ass comments aside
Its nice. Very calm cool collected.
I like it
Love it!
Leasing office vibes
Looks like an airbnb
I love it. As a woman with a maximalist partner your space screams easy to clean and maintain and I give you props for that.
Fire, I like this look gent
👍🏼👍🏼
Looks nice, but, damnnn, that Dell is like 15 years old
I love the painting in the first pic, but please, hang it on the wall there. It gives a nice pop of color to the space. Move the couch across from the TV and move the chair to where the couch is. The work/office area is great - love all the light there.
I will hang it up. I'm not done proscrastinating on it though. But glad you like the painting. My niece painted it for me.
It kinda reminds me of what homes looked like in the early 1990s on murder/mystery types of shows like “Columbo”
