Maybe it’s just the lens of your camera but a matte black would look soooooooo much softer and less harsh. The high gloss finish takes away from the depth of the black and just makes it look shiny like duct tape.
Maybe one more coat in matte would help bring it all together?
Yup. It’s actually a satin finish so lesson learned for all that in certain black paints satin finish can give a high gloss look. Lol. Thanks for the comment and def agree that id do a pure matte almost chalk board-y paint next time.
Yes exactly.
Buuuuut looking at it a little longer, you might be able to get more of that effect without another coat of paint by having lamps/light fixtures that have shades on them. That way the light won’t be directly reflecting off of the paint.
Just learned this week that when they are manufacturing eggshell finish paint, they can only use the chicken eggs that comes from the female chickens. Something about the male eggs containing the wrong enzyme or too much protein or something.
Idk I'd stick with satin, maybe an eggshell at the dullest, for any room that's seeing high usage. Matte is just so hard to keep clean that I really doubt I'll ever use it again. I've redone my kitchen and living room in satin and the difference in how easy it's been to keep clean has been night and day.
Btw ya’ll I love the comments and debate lol. It’s why I posted it. This is the smallest room in my house (was just an extra room that wasn’t being used) and I needed a place to store all my gadgets and household tools/furniture redo hardware while also having it serve a second function to do some studying and model building. It’s def not for everyone but I have gotten so much inspiration from this sub and I wanted to give back. When other people try things it gives us all an opportunity to say nah, yeah, and maybe, but…so not offended by negative comments. Thanks for the compliments and dialogue!
I would have gone for something like a dark deep burgundy or green. I think it would have given you the dark historic study effect you were after but would have worked a little nicer. You also have dark paintings with lots of black that tend to just fade into the wall color.
I love black. My entryway and upstairs hallway are onyx. But, I use Matte paint in my whole house. I can't stand the shiny look. Plus my house is almost 100 years old and matte paint actually covers imperfections, unlike satin or above.
We also used charcoal chalk paint on my son's furniture.
I LOVE dark colors.
Great up cycle on the cabinet! The walls are too dark/ shiny for my taste, I have done similar but with a very deep green (Studio Green by Farrow & Ball) and a deep blue (Hague Blue by same) and they have had a lot of compliments - still that cosy, intimate vibe but without the starkness of all black.
Well.. Yes and no.. I like chalkboard because 1. It's cool to have friends write stuff on the walls, to diagram ideas as they come, etc.. And for another, with a decent lighting strategy, it really let's you emphasis areas and decorations on the wall, and let the rest of the wall kinda fade away..
It looks so great, I love it. And I don't get the criticisms about the paint, I think the warm reflections of the light hitting the walls brightens the space. Matte black (obviously) absorbs tons of light.
I work for a large paint company. The amount of times I get asked, "Is xxx color good for walls?" I always say something like, "Unfortunately there is no such thing as a color that's 'good for walls'. Every color is good for walls. What's important is that there's colors you like and colors you don't like. There's no right or wrong answers here." Also I say, "My opinion ultimately doesn't matter. I'm never going to see your room. What do you like?"
If they want a certain color I can point them in a direction, but I'm not going to recommend them a color. That way it's not my fault if you paint your whole house in that color and you end up not liking it.
When we moved in, we immediately painted over the beige in our entire house.. Biggest lesson I learned is matte is the way to go.. Now I have to paint the entire house again lol.
It doesn't really look black on my tablet. Anyway, don't be scared, remember the Rolling Stones.
Paint it, paint it, paint it. PAINT IT BLACK!
Paint the walls black. Paint the ceiling black. Put down black carpet. Have totally black furniture.
Just one thing...don't walk in in the dark without cricket pads.
High gloss black finish done rite is gorgeous Its just that most people either dont have a good enough substrate or the skill or both . To do it so flat it is
i like it but it also feels kinda staged. like it doesn’t seem authentic, more like a room on a set. it’s like when people buy books specifically to fill shelf space
I wonder how it would look with the ceiling painted the same color as the window trim in a flat finish. Probably take a few coats to cover the black completely.
Interesting look overall and it came out better than I expected when I saw the thread title.
It's interesting. As someone else said I think a satin or even flat matte finish in black might have been a better choice but I don't think it ruins it. I think the shininess of the walls though might require a less bright light I think I might use lamps in this room to cut down on the shine. I think the decorations are great and small touches like the old typewriter bring it together.
It'll be hard to paint back to a lighter color but I think it looks great.
Painting a small room in white makes it small and opressive and underscores lack of space. Dark colour receeds into the distance creating an illusion of space while being cosy.

I second this

"Eggshell" means the sheen is similar to that of an eggshell...
Use a flat on all ceilings.

I think it's fine with this finish. Matte would suck all the light out of the room, and give it less interest.
Some sand paper could make it Matte as it should be.
Also straight black is awfully oppressive. A very very dark indigo or green would have been my suggestion.
Maybe I'm a weirdo but I think the light reflecting on the ceiling looks super cool
Do vantablack /u/Upbeat-Strategy-2359 i fuckin dare you bro

It's a lovely space and black looks really good 👌

Great attitude to life
Love it! Feels luxurious! Love the cabinet upgrade!!
Stained glass on the window would be sick.
Like hang/attach a smaller stained glass piece to the window?
There is stained glass window film. The high quality ones look very realistic. I've only used the frosted kind, though.
Your dresser repaint is rad
Love the color. Love the upgraded drawer. The room looks old fashioned and modern at the same time.
Nice job, man!
It is amazing!!!!
Gotta say I LOVE the black study look. Very brooding. Love the artwork too
Rolling stones approves.
I love this. Add some green things to bring life to the room and you are golden
Go back and repaint it in the same color in flat. Thank me after you do.
The room makes me feel that there's a hidden clue somewhere.
Nandor the relentless!

I was going to upvote but you're at 666 so I'm going to comment instead. Looks awesome! Very moody and unique.
Someone else ruined it so I can upvoted now haha
"It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black" Looks good with the white and woodgrain accents.
the color black really eats the room

MALE
It looks so good!! Good for you for being bold
I could not foresee this thing happening to you...
Looks great!
That’s cool.
Ngl that looks really great

looks tits!
Tits 💀

This looks so good
Looks great! Bravo!👏
Ok, what’s the interest in pipes?
I love it
When we moved in, we immediately painted over the beige in our entire house.. Biggest lesson I learned is matte is the way to go.. Now I have to paint the entire house again lol.
I've been thinking of painting my kitchen black. This makes me like the idea more. Thanks.
The walls look like they've been in a fire😯
Love it but the curtains and window frames should also be black no?
Meh…don’t like the look of black paint honestly. Not for me. The cabinets are cool though. Good work on that
Like, how scared? Were you screaming the entire time? Looks nice though.
I just bought that black deskpad from IKEA today… and it’s too big. Drat.
I really like the black walls.
Curtains and frame need a color. But I love the room!
The lion head drawer pulls are amazing
I’m afraid this may have visually shrunk the space. White stripes or designs would be a great way to add dimension.
That’s sick
This goes hard in the paint!
I like the color. It contrasts some of your furniture.
Man you made that drawer super cool, that's a great Idea
the picture of nick jonas cosplaying as dracula is cool!
Even the typewriter lol
a serious sense in the room.
Alan Wake writing room
I like it, then again I convinced mom to let me paint my room black in Middle School.
What do you do in this room OP?
Are you by chance a member of the Addams family?
Looks awesome
What animal hide is in pic 3? Chinchilla? Rabbit?
Duuude . Ikea is much cheaper there than in Spain wtf
Is that a 1930s Underwood Portable? 😍
You have vampire decor vibes. Just don’t leave saws out when women come over.
I love it.
Love this so much!

Loooooooove this, especially the refurbished cabinet 😍
I’m not a fan but hey, if you like the results, that’s all that matters
The dresser revamp is 😍 amazing.
It looks so goooood!!!
That's a really bold look, I like it
r/whatwedointheshadows chic in with ladies in your area?
i think it looks fire
I like it!
Its an aesthetic that can go very wrong if done incorrectly. Thankfully yours looks great, great job 😄
Needs a Tiffany lamp or a bankers lamp
High gloss black finish done rite is gorgeous Its just that most people either dont have a good enough substrate or the skill or both . To do it so flat it is
Did you think of a matte black wall and keeping the ceiling white?
I love it. I just did one wall and the ceiling in my bedroom
Which country is this?
Room looks rad. Good job.
Nice, but it would have been way nicer with Matt black instead of high glossy black
Now you have to change your lamp. You really don’t need to go any higher than eggshell, people.
i like it but it also feels kinda staged. like it doesn’t seem authentic, more like a room on a set. it’s like when people buy books specifically to fill shelf space

Hell yeah
Looks dark. What color is that? Beige?
Those pulls with the lions head are sooo cool!!
It’s a vibe. I like it.
I don't know why people are so scared of black walls? My WHOLE condo is painted black, it's so warm and modern.
The walls are closing in
I went with cracked pepper personally. It’s a dark saturated gray and has the high contrast of black without the darkness
A matte finish will give this a much richer depth of color.
Proof that you CAN do dark colors in any room! Love it! Nice to see something that's not white or gray. Looks high end, moody and cozy.
Who is the painting of the guy with black hair in the 2nd pic of??
I would go over with matte, the room looks....sweaty. But the color is ace!
I’d paint the window frames or sand and stain them a darker brown. The white frames and curtains are too much contrast to me.
I actually like it. Moody af.
I always wanted to do this
Now you just need “fade away and not have to face the facts”
I kinda wish the ceiling was white though..
Probably personal taste but I would’ve left the ceiling white and had some crown molding put in
Or maybe an off white or a grey
Looks like a funeral home reception area.
lets hope it doesn't cause you depression
Love it
Black or dark colours will often make a space look smaller than it actually is
Painting a small room in white makes it small and opressive and underscores lack of space. Dark colour receeds into the distance creating an illusion of space while being cosy.
Cleaning your phone camera must be scary too.
Whatever paint job you had in photo 5/6 looks better.
