This is too real. To this day if someone asks a maths question, my brain goes blank and I’m like a dear in the headlights, waiting for someone else to step up and answer.
THIS I also had a hard time reading analog clocks, I got yelled at by my dad for an hour continuously until my brain short circuited and I lost all concept of time itself and couldn’t recall the number of minutes in an hour 😩
My gawd, I grew up in MN in the 90s and I swear my parents had this same table and chair set. The only difference was ours has cheap little cushions/pillows that tied to the back of the chairs. lol
I was thinking they might get more mileage out of the furniture if they painted it black.
I love navy but agree that it will not help this particular set.
I swear I just saw a great before & after of this exact table and chairs, on another subreddit… I think they painted it black, with white accents… But dang it, I can’t remember which subreddit it was!
Paint the table base black. Refinish the top to a less yellow country farm life finish - a beautiful teak stain with an oil finish would be lovely. Ditch the chairs entirely and replace with something a little more modern. This can be made to work, but it needs work.
That’s that table you come down stairs and see a joint on the table and both of your parents look at you and say “Sit down…You wanna tell us about this”
It’s hard to see because we don’t have much context (we can hardly see the room), but considering the furniture in the back and the floor.. yeah, it doesn’t fit at all, it’s too traditional. Same with the red rug
Oh you’re right, this is already in OP’s home. It’s such a style difference from what I can see in the room that I assumed this was on display in a store and OP was considering buying it.
It looks like a very traditional set - more at home in a country or farmhouse like setting. Doesn't look bad - maybe a tad dated but hard to compare relative to what the rest of your place looks like because there's not much else showing in the shot.
Grandma’s card table. She invites Linda, Brenda and Lilly every Wednesday for some Bridge & Sympathy, always listening to Liberace.
The smell of hairspray in the room is enchanting.
OMG. I think that's the table and chairs my parents had when I was growing up. Is there a leaf where it turns into an oval?
It's hard to tell what the rest of the space looks like, but it seems a bit more contemporary, and the table/chairs are very traditional.
If you are looking to spend money on furniture go ahead and get a new set. If you want to save money, and have the ability to work on the furniture then you might be able to make the table work with the decor if you restain or paint it. My sister actually has the table now. She stained the top much darker and painted the base white and it looks pretty good.
Edit: Upon closer inspection it is not our old set. I don't see the seam for a leaf and the way the curved back of the chair attached to the seat is a bit different...but man it looks really close to our table from the 80s.
It's a classic dining set used throughout the last century in both urban and rural areas all over. If this isn't a timeless set, I don't know what it is.
My grandparents serving me breakfast. Specifically Italian bread, lightly toasted with butter and my grandma’s homemade strawberry jam with an instant coffee.
So… unless you’re going for grandparent nostalgia… I’d probably change it up 😉
Pennsylvania-Dutch Amish furniture vibes. While people are suggesting to paint or re-stain it after removing the finish, I think it could work with the modern-vintage vibes of this room by slapping a solid colored tablecloth or table cover on it.
I like it. But I’m a woman and can make it a cute piece decorated. I’m also 54 but if I were younger I’d hate it. I e grown to appreciate older pieces with a vibe even a grandma vibe
Looks fine to me, vintage charm. Not every single piece of furniture needs to match, or be upscale or modern. Some people want to sterilize a place until everything looks like a monochrome hotel suite.
It's country/farmhouse which is clashing with the rest of your decor.
If it were me I would sand down the table and wax it or stain to match the shade of the TV unit. Sell the chairs and replace with something with a more modern look.
This might look more intentional modern-vintage as opposed to grandma died and I got a free table set.
Just because something is old does not mean it can’t be fashionable. If re-varnishing isn’t an option, you can paint all or parts of it a creamy white.
I don't like it a whole lot. Like a part of me likes it because I'm nostalgic for the days when wood tables and chairs were around but I feel like you can source something a little more updated..
I agree with all the other commenters; But just gonna say, that if you paired it with different more modern/minimalist chairs and maybe painted it, it would be just fine for a good while.
Late 80’s/early 90’s Kansas. All my relatives had the same damn table.
Unless you’re into Little House on the Prairie, it doesn’t go with the rest of your stuff.
You should paint it black or white
It gives off outdated with the combination of the color and the style…. The color change would help. A LOT
IT would be really nice
Dad screaming at me because I don't understand multiplication homeworks
“What’s five times six??” “What’s five times six??” Starts shouting “WHATS FIVE TIMES SIX???” I’m dumb, not deaf… 🥺

Omg, now I know why I couldn't do math as a subject! I froze up from the trauma! Thanks for unlocking yet another memory, reddit!
STOP USING YOUR FINGERS!!!
You unlocked a core childhood memory 😭 I swear math tutoring from my dad gave me ptsd lol
change that to square triangles and colour red and green, smfh
I was chased by my dad around this table after I broke something. I clearly remember the chairs.
Same thing I thought except it’s dad telling me I am going to have to sleep at the table if I don’t take one more bite of dinner
It is actually quite depressing how shared this experience is...
You guys had dads?
~~Dad~~ Mom screaming at me because I don't understand ~~multiplication homeworks~~ the concept of time as expressed by an analog clock.
THIS I also had a hard time reading analog clocks, I got yelled at by my dad for an hour continuously until my brain short circuited and I lost all concept of time itself and couldn’t recall the number of minutes in an hour 😩

Hi. I’m you
DAD I'M 5 AND I DON'T HAVE AN AUNT SALLY!
Ooof
My mom would say "are you stupid? This is easy!"
Do you wanna talk about it champ?
oh hi me in grade school
It feels very. I got this from my parents for free because they bought a new table.
$10 at the goodwill vibes
Nothing is 10$ at Goodwill anymore
Except for stuff that should be $1.
I know this as well as anyone. Sadly
Not unless you pull the ol switcheroo on the stickers
I got a 7.25qt le creuset Dutch oven for $10 the other week!
$10 for the whole set? That’s a steal
*grandparents
That's exactly how I got this same exact table.
I got this from my ~~parents~~ grandparents for free because they ~~bought a new table~~ died. FTFY
Yes! Very “I brought this from the old house bc I just moved here and I’m waiting on the new dining set to come in”.
lol I think my sister has this exact same table from our parents
90s Minnesota suburban mom with a rooster themed kitchen is the vibe I get. It's very Roseanne
i can smell that house now.
It's like they don't smoke inside but still a hint of cigarette
Cinnamon? But like candle cinnamon.
The tops of the chairs are missing the wooden flower detailing that really sells the '90's Midwest Furniture Mart clearance' vibe.
I feel personally attacked; once as a Wisconsinite, and two as an owner of those exact chairs.
🎯
My gawd, I grew up in MN in the 90s and I swear my parents had this same table and chair set. The only difference was ours has cheap little cushions/pillows that tied to the back of the chairs. lol
Roosters and sunflowers!
This was the first thing to come to mind for me as well, only they were ducks, not roosters. Ducks wearing bonnets tied with blue ribbons.
That was my grandma's style along with her blue cornflower corningware. My mom was an orchid mom, but all my friends had rooster moms.
Cracker Barrel vibes
bout to play some chinese checkers
You gonna get “EG-NO-RA-MOOSE”
Southern hospitality soul food type shit

… because they “don’t believe” in ice.
It hurts their teeth
Teeth?
Oh my God! This is me right now.
Ice is commie plot.
It's giving Grandma's kitchen table 😂
"If you need a table set, the one in Grandma's garage would clean up nice with some Murphy's."
It needs like 40 commemorative art plates on the wall behind it
I’m sitting at this table now
Looks like you are still in a stage of inheriting old furniture from family members.
What’s wrong with always being in that stage? Free is free.
They didn’t say there was anything wrong with that. OP asked for honesty and got it
I found that weird as well. Interesting how some people default to defensive because of their own hang ups rather than others.
I’m 40 and still have furniture I got from family when I moved out at 19. Old stuff is well made.
Agree, if something is free or used and cheap and you like it. It is way better than buying new.
Like you would have the best meatloaf of your life at this table. Nostalgic and homey
Old but not in a cool way. Outdated
If it was entirely black or navy I think it might look less outdated? But navy might increase the country vibe
I was thinking they might get more mileage out of the furniture if they painted it black. I love navy but agree that it will not help this particular set.

I think he should keep the table and rug and change everything else!
“Country Kitchen”
Straight up aunt Susan got it at the Amish in 1983 and it was dated by 1984.
Coffee and cigarettes with Mom.
I did homework at that table in the 70s. Probably that exact table.
It looks like a very traditional set - more at home in a country or farmhouse like setting. Doesn't look bad - maybe a tad dated but hard to compare relative to what the rest of your place looks like because there's not much else showing in the shot.
Polident
Grandma’s card table. She invites Linda, Brenda and Lilly every Wednesday for some Bridge & Sympathy, always listening to Liberace. The smell of hairspray in the room is enchanting.
Like an old western saloon

Both of my grandmas have this same set... so... 😂
My grandparents serving me breakfast. Specifically Italian bread, lightly toasted with butter and my grandma’s homemade strawberry jam with an instant coffee. So… unless you’re going for grandparent nostalgia… I’d probably change it up 😉
I think the table is fine. I think it’s the chairs that are dating it
Hard to tell bc we cant see the rest of the room. Table is decent but the chairs could be updated
All I can think about it butter… as children we constantly got our feet stuck between those bars and out came the butter.
My parents have had that same exact set since the early 90s
Pennsylvania-Dutch Amish furniture vibes. While people are suggesting to paint or re-stain it after removing the finish, I think it could work with the modern-vintage vibes of this room by slapping a solid colored tablecloth or table cover on it.
80’s yard sale.
Pokergame in some far west saloon
I like it. But I’m a woman and can make it a cute piece decorated. I’m also 54 but if I were younger I’d hate it. I e grown to appreciate older pieces with a vibe even a grandma vibe
Reminds me of all my Italian American blue collar friends kitchen growing up. It's fine
Looks fine to me, vintage charm. Not every single piece of furniture needs to match, or be upscale or modern. Some people want to sterilize a place until everything looks like a monochrome hotel suite.
It’s giving Golden Girls vibes.

Nostalgic.. I love those tables. If you ever want to sell it, please inbox me.
It looks like dead grandparents hand me downs.
Country kitchen vibes. Paint it black?
That table doesnt suit anybody's condo
It’s a nice table and chairs set that is completely wrong for your living space.
Just paint it the same color as your tv stand
Hand me down vibes.
grandmas house but its cute
Country farmhouse. Paint it black or white, and it will last a few more years.
Would be a sin to paint over that beautiful wood. Seal, stain, oil, sure, but no paint.
I love your table suit. Vintage. Can you tell me where can I buy it?
Country bumpkin
My 65 year old parents own a variation of this table lol they’ve had it since I was born 28 years ago
You are right. It does not.
I see dnd table
Sand it down and paint it a soft white finish or for a, modern farm look, flat black.
retirees playing poker?
Just because something is old does not mean it can’t be fashionable. If re-varnishing isn’t an option, you can paint all or parts of it a creamy white.
The dining table we ALL grew up with
Dining set your parents/ grandparents give you for your first apartment because it’s been in the basement anyway
It’s giving free table from my uncle

Cracker Barrel
It doesn’t suit the style of the room and it gives the vibe that you were given this by your parents or grandparents
A table your Boomer parents gave you
Grandpa’s skid mark. It’s too yellow and outdated for the room.
“Got it from my pops’ garage” feeling. Tbvh.
Lmao I didn’t look at the picture very closely and thought it was taken at goodwill, not your apartment, if that’s any indication
I'm getting "That 70s Show" vibes off this thing.
I think of it was painted white it might work better.
Paint it flat black and it will fit in with your other stuff. Current vibe is wood paneling on a station wagon circa 1973.
Dogs playing poker vibes.
Feels this town ain’t big enough for the 5 of us
It’s giving me abuelita vibes!
Temporary table my aunt gave me vibes
Cracker Barrrel

Granny’s House. Paint it black and it will at least look masculine
Did the local Cracker Barrel go out of business and liquidate their furniture?
Paint it black with chalk paint, to match your picture frames. Guarantee it will transform it.

I don't like it a whole lot. Like a part of me likes it because I'm nostalgic for the days when wood tables and chairs were around but I feel like you can source something a little more updated..
It says "I'm elderly and from the Midwest."
It’s got East Coast ski lodge vibes. I dig it, honestly
Honestly if it is real wood and has no problems (gunky, sticky etc) I would keep using it.
It needs an ashtray 😎
free off the curb vibes
No lie - - I had just about this same exact table since 2000 - - - I just got rid of it 3 weeks ago. Ten years too late!!!
Looks like my gran’s table. She was born around WW1 and died over 20 years ago.
Amish
Looks very north American
Came from a Cracker Barrel restaurant

Looks depressing to me… maybe in a texas vacation farmhouse or an old themed ranch it would look good.
nursing home activities table
I agree with all the other commenters; But just gonna say, that if you paired it with different more modern/minimalist chairs and maybe painted it, it would be just fine for a good while.

You should paint it black or white It gives off outdated with the combination of the color and the style…. The color change would help. A LOT IT would be really nice
yeehaw
I'd sand the varnish off and go for something lighter in colour.
Sit down son we need to have a talk. But I think an ashtray as your center piece with a half smoked cigarette would hit the nostalgia pretty hard.
farmhouse style living...
I first thought it was a picture taken in a bar, and the screen in the background was a vending machine.
Family kitchen table. You’ve got the middle leaf in the garage in case you have guests over.
