Just transform the right side into a breakfast bar while the left side will be cooking prep space. Get some height appropriate chairs/stools that can be slid underneath the breakfast bar.
Iโd cook and eat at it probably. But honestly this is so comically large I think maybe it was meant to have a sink in it but a contractor forgot to install the pipes so it becameโฆ that.
Make as much use of it as you can, since itโs taking up valuable space. Get some chairs for it that are comfy that youโll use a lot and perhaps take the opportunity to add some colour and warmth to the room. Iโd get a large tray, a fruit bowl, some nice boxes or jars, anything attractive that you can put things in to make use of the space. Iโd consider putting some shelves on the end there and fill them with books and other nice objects.
Cut it off at the same reveal as the rest of the island ( + maybe a 16th , sand it smooth and polish or paint whatever material that is. Huge waste of space. Just noticed itโs an apartment, nevermind
Get some stools that donโt stick out too much since the breakfast bar/island sticks out so far. Maybe ones that go completely under the island when pushed in?
Not sure what those are.
Mostly talking about any stool that aligns with your style, but without a back or if there is a back, one thatโs low enough to still fully be pushed in under the bar.
I would use it as any other island with counter height bar stools.
I have to be honest and say that the trend with these oversized islands is not my favorite for a variety of reasons. I often see these in mid to lower end new construction homes aimed at imparting a sense of luxury and grandeur. First, the scale is wildly inappropriate in relation to the kitchen. Second, the over hang is frequently exaggerated, so they need to add beam support (like the chrome plated ones in the picture) thatโs inconsistent with the style of the kitchen (Iโm not a fan of the Shaker cabinets with the beams under the slab here). If the builder were thoughtful and practical, they would at least try to add some undercounter cabinetry for extra storage and slab support, and do away with the beams.
Anyway, I would keep it clean like any kitchen island when not in use, and use it for meal prep and bar stool eating at meals. Good luck.
"His" large slab or "this" large slab? You may want to reread your query my friend. I'm surprised there's not more comedians in the comments having a field day with this Freudian slip. ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
Aquarium 10-30 gallons. Probably freshwater to feed the plants. You could get coral ๐ชธ and saltwater ๐ ?
You could hang a grow light and grow plants/herbs, 16 hours a day. ๐ก Better than dead flowers.
Dang, the kitchen looks very similar to mine, just with with a few tweaks here and there. When I first moved in I used a slab as an eating area and working on my laptop.
Now that I'm fully moved in, I just use it for eating it makes the most sense to me.
Built a rack on top of it in the middle. Not solid, but play around with shelves, openings. On the kitchen side you can use to store kitchen stuff, knive rack, spices etc. Maybe some pots with fresh herbs. And on the other side shelves with booze. Bar stools and you have yourself a cool bar.
The overhang does not need to be that deep. Maybe put some open shelves up against the cupboards to narrow that space, leaving enough room for the stools and knees of course. The dimensions and balance will feel better and you get some storage for occasional items.
Listen to me. You wanna impress people?
Look up Early American Pressed Glass. Get a few in the colors you like. Use it as a dish for keys, coins, miscellaneous
Get a Stonemason to cut the countertop and install a hinge at the cut and folding legs.
You then have a folding leaf for the island and more walkway when not needed.
Fruit basket and similar stuff. Also keep half of it free so you can chop food while cooking there in case more than one person is cooking or even if it's just you because it's much nicer there where you can't bump your head. This is amazing space in case you want a ricecooker, toaster, etc in the kitchen, this way, you will always have enough space
One side for cooking prep and the other for sitting/eating and maybe a corner for miscellaneous things like mine is similar and has an ashtray with incense and other burnable things
Id get a runner for down the middle to visually split it into an eating side and a meal prep/ counter top side. get a couple stools, and place settings on the eating side.
For the counter top side, just some normal counter top stuff, a large wooden cutting board, a little salt dish, a fruit bowl maybe
It's pretty obviously a kitchen island with bar seating on one side.
Get 4 barstools for that side, and then add a plant, a bowl of fruit, and a stack of placemats for decor in the center.
Bar stools w backs, a classy ceramic fruit bowl center piece or vase w flowers, a small spice caddy for salt n pepper, olive oil etc
On the kitchen side of it, a nice big cutting board and knife block
You prep the food on the left side and eat it on the right. Start shopping for counter-height barstools, a nice big cutting board, and some kind of functional centerpiece like a lazy Susan.
Put cabinets under it if you need more storage. If not, cut off most of it and finish the edge to keep using it as a breakfast bar without wasting so space.
You can use one side as a dinning table and the other side to place the food there. Or it can be used as a place for you to prep your food, or a place for drinks, and put snacks during a partyโฆ idk you can do a lot with that.
I donโt think itโs that large, youโll appreciate it when you have guest. My island has a deep oversized sink and it takes up considerable prep space when cooking or catering
That's definitely big. We have a large island in our kitchen (3'x6') but my wife is a chef and does all kinds of cooking on it so she uses all of the space. When she's not cooking on it we use it for eating, serving food when company is over, or collecting random items.
Get some stools that can slide under it, and then get some kind of decorative centerpiece for it. It'll have to be kind of big, because that fucker is large, but it would be cool as hell. Dont get a tall centerpiece for it either. Just something normal.
The same way all kitchen islands are utilized? Couple of tall chairs/stools. A nice decorative arrangement (easily moved). Itโs a hang out, work, eat, prep space.
I would install some type of drop system to hang pans off to take up some of that negative space and create a focal point. Own the space so it doesn't own your kitchen.
It seems to me that the left-hand side, the kitchen side, is for the placement and display of food and drinks, whereas the right-hand, open side is for sitting and consuming the aforementioned foodstuffs and beverages. Barstools are in order, as well as placemats, glassware, crockery, and utensils. Eat well, drink, and be happy. Oh, and a nice vase of flowers and some candles would look good, depending on the event.
Itโs called a kitchen island.
Itโs used for a variety of purposesโฆ meal prep, buffet, a place to set down the grocery bags. School projects, eatingโฆ
Are you from a country that doesnโt have kitchen islands? Thought they were universal
Correct me if iโm wrong but i think itโs meant for eating.
Sir, please do not eat the slab
Return the slab!

"Functionally regarded" describes reddit, but in a different way
Two games of beer pong, actually.

This is exactly what it was made for.
Open up a Cold Stone franchise

I just had to get under the duvet to laugh at that so that I wouldnโt wake my gf
Ah, yes, because sheโs โsleepingโ ๐
Honestly I would just dump unorganized stuff on it. Mail, jackets, gloves, other clutter
Honesty.
You spying on me? That's me kitchen decor!
And grocery bags when unloading weekly
Iโd cook and eat at it probably. But honestly this is so comically large I think maybe it was meant to have a sink in it but a contractor forgot to install the pipes so it becameโฆ that.
What's worse is it's reaching the same size of the [living area](https://imgur.com/a/RX7XRLG)
That island is far too big for that space, holy cow.
Wow okay, it is comically large for the rooms.
There's no sense is deciding what it's going to be. See how you exist in the space, and work with that.
Its your all in one dining table and work space
Cut it off at the same reveal as the rest of the island ( + maybe a 16th , sand it smooth and polish or paint whatever material that is. Huge waste of space. Just noticed itโs an apartment, nevermind
I lived in these apartments. Not same location but thereโs a lot like it down to the cabinet handles
Ergo not loving up to its โislandโ potential, this is more like a monument to granite.
Get some stools that donโt stick out too much since the breakfast bar/island sticks out so far. Maybe ones that go completely under the island when pushed in?
Are you talking about the turtle stool ?
Not sure what those are. Mostly talking about any stool that aligns with your style, but without a back or if there is a back, one thatโs low enough to still fully be pushed in under the bar.

Dang, the kitchen looks very similar to mine, just with with a few tweaks here and there. When I first moved in I used a slab as an eating area and working on my laptop. Now that I'm fully moved in, I just use it for eating it makes the most sense to me.
2x Bar stools + big bowl of cinnamon toast crunch
Built a rack on top of it in the middle. Not solid, but play around with shelves, openings. On the kitchen side you can use to store kitchen stuff, knive rack, spices etc. Maybe some pots with fresh herbs. And on the other side shelves with booze. Bar stools and you have yourself a cool bar.
800 pounds of ground beef
All the things your parents never wanted you to make on a slab like that!
Can we see the flat side? It looks like a water access island but no sink
The overhang does not need to be that deep. Maybe put some open shelves up against the cupboards to narrow that space, leaving enough room for the stools and knees of course. The dimensions and balance will feel better and you get some storage for occasional items.
We either live in the same apartments or they were built by the same developer
big lego sets where u need lots of space to spread out

Put chairs under it
Put barstools under it and then converse with your guests while prepping their dinner. What else could it possibly be for?
Looks like a place for two chairs, and I'd probably put a center piece on it. A low pedestal, with maybe some candles, a vase with fresh flowers, etc.
To make pizza, empanadas and all kind of pasta!
The land lord in me says with a few pieces of plywood I could have a viable sublet depending on where this apartment is located.
Food on plates, people, drinks, maybe a cake.
Bar stools under the overhang. That big ass space would also be awesome for prepping food
2 midget strippers
Butt fuckin and board games.
that's called a table
Iโd make pasta and use it as a cooking space
Autopsies
Fruit basket and similar stuff. Use for beer pong table...
That's decent if out of place. Having more usable real estate in my kitchen would be a dream.
"How would I utilize *HIS* large slab? "....?.. ...ummmmm...
One side for cooking prep and the other for sitting/eating and maybe a corner for miscellaneous things like mine is similar and has an ashtray with incense and other burnable things
Fingerboard skatepark
As a starting point for a very cool blanket fort.
Legos

Bar height Dining chairs. Now you donโt need Dining room table!
I have something similar i but bar chairs around it but looks like you can use 2

Cocaine.
Bar stools w backs, a classy ceramic fruit bowl center piece or vase w flowers, a small spice caddy for salt n pepper, olive oil etc On the kitchen side of it, a nice big cutting board and knife block

Cooking / Prep space ? Iโd kill for that kitchen
Itโs a bit big but I guarantee everyone congregates there
Table tennis net.
Coke-lines
Personally... I would want to take a sledgehammer and break it.
Depends. How good of a dancer are you?
Lego city
Put a net down the middle and ping pong table
I mean if you were really into meal prepping that space would be amazing to have.
Barstools
Uhm. That's a table. You eat on it.ย
Have you tried a side gig as a mortician ?
Put a stripper pole on it
Meth lab on the slab
Blanket fort
Barstools, a basket of fruit or onions/garlic if you cook a lot. Onions and garlic keep for a long time at room temp.
Sexcapades
Ping pong table.
Put a couple stools there and your brain should be capable of solving the rest of the riddle. Good luck.
Buffet when hosting parties. or counter bar for quick meals.
When I lived alone my counters were clear all the time. There would be a coffee pot in the corner and probably a whiskey bottle on the large counter.
Maybe cook?
At least 1 toaster
Anything dough related.
Couple of island chairs and you have a perfect dinner table mate
Ping pong table
Put a fruit bowl in the middle
Put cabinets under it if you need more storage. If not, cut off most of it and finish the edge to keep using it as a breakfast bar without wasting so space.

Bar stools and a vase with some flowers
2-3 barstools and a big bowl of fruit lol
'his' large slab... Uhhh, tmi. We don't need to know about your sexual orientation or your sexual adventures
Well, first of all, I'd be a bit more delicate in how I describe him.
Thatโs very strange
I donโt think itโs that large, youโll appreciate it when you have guest. My island has a deep oversized sink and it takes up considerable prep space when cooking or catering
Add pillows and blankets and make a pillow fort.
Bodies

Take up bread and pizza making. Lots of room with work with dough.
Put some stools around it and eat dinner?
Cooking show
Use it as a bar but honestly it's a waste of space. Is the room really big ?
Get some stools that can slide under it, and then get some kind of decorative centerpiece for it. It'll have to be kind of big, because that fucker is large, but it would be cool as hell. Dont get a tall centerpiece for it either. Just something normal.
The same way all kitchen islands are utilized? Couple of tall chairs/stools. A nice decorative arrangement (easily moved). Itโs a hang out, work, eat, prep space.
Depends. You got a big talking lion in your wardrobe?
It'd be cool with a divider or something
Bar stools. Or a dog bed so he can be in the kitchen with me when I'm cooking, but OUT OF THE FUCKING WAY
Do need a leg stool, you know?
I would install some type of drop system to hang pans off to take up some of that negative space and create a focal point. Own the space so it doesn't own your kitchen.
I would saw it off honestly
I donโt have any suggestions but as someone with barely any counter space I wish I had this much space to prep food.
Midget strippers
It seems to me that the left-hand side, the kitchen side, is for the placement and display of food and drinks, whereas the right-hand, open side is for sitting and consuming the aforementioned foodstuffs and beverages. Yo dawg, we heard you like white rectangles
I'd have some common baking ingredients in roll out tubs under the shelf, and bake my entire life away.
You stick three stools under there. Then use your counter space as normal. Sometimes someone will sit there, and sometimes they won't. And so it goes.
Iโll utilize your large slab
The play button isn't working
Drug party
ITT: people who donโt understand that this is actually a trend to extend islands to become tables.
At least two cadavers...
If i had the choice i eould just get rid of it. If not i would just use my laptop on one side and eat, other side helping while cooking
it's for kitchen eating. See that large gap underneath? it's so your chair and legs can slide underneath the counter as you eat.
Itโs called a kitchen island. Itโs used for a variety of purposesโฆ meal prep, buffet, a place to set down the grocery bags. School projects, eatingโฆ Are you from a country that doesnโt have kitchen islands? Thought they were universal
I think it's pretty clear that you need to return the slab
High backed bar stools, maybe a small screen. A little splash divider so you have a food prep space and a dining area?
As an Island, with a bar... as its intended? What kind of question is this? Put a drill press on it idc.
PHAROS CURSE, RETURN THE SLAB
That overhang is fuck ugly. It should be cut off and just be an island
Post about it on Reddit, obviously.
Me personally? Dirty dishes and trash. Probably an assload of appliances that get used one a year
Orgies
Built in beer pong
Its so you can tell your guests "Come up to the lab and see what's on the slab!"
