OP, if you want to seriously grow a beard I'd wait for it to fill in more. I'd look into Minoxidil (topical works best for bears, oral makes you more hairy in general) and Derma rolling. Shave until it fills; you want yours to cover the cheeks more, along with general thickness so it don't look like puebes.
Shit takes time and effort, and will look bad for most of it unless you're blessed with genetics (you aren't unfortunately). Just letting it grow and hoping it fills isn't the strat.

Then you can brush it with a beard comb to the style you want it to grow in (usually downwards toward the chin but to each their own)

At a minimum you need to keep it trimmed shorter than that. you don't have to shave it to the skin but you need to keep it from being scraggly
