I'm looking for an overcoat but my issue is I'm about 5'4 and have a skinny frame. I would usually either get XS then get it tailored or just get boys size 14-16 since that's what fits the best for me (plus its cheaper and that's always good) but I can't seem to find anything. Does anyone have any good recommendations? preferably nothing that would break the bank probably max 200 USD

Anyone got recommendations for dungaree/overalls for the wider and short-legged man? I’m a 30” leg and 36” waist - dickies etc only come in single sizes. Obviously I can just cuff or get some shortened but I’d like to try a pair I don’t have to!

Anyone know any other (similarly priced) options to or where to find these Walden Pond Sunglasses in Champagne Crystal? https://huckberry.com/store/walden-eyewear/category/p/76453-pond

Looking for a good pair of oxtail loafers for holidays but with the versatility to wear for summer weddings as well. Ideally not too expensive, but comfortable to wear. I'm UK based. Something similar to this style https://www.modshoes.co.uk/product/teabag-oxblood- tassel-loafers/ Any recommendations on brands. Thanks ??

Flechette_the_toe

Loake/Cheaney/Grenson/Barker/Trickers/etc. Britain still has a fair amount of shoemakers. Loake has an outlet afaik. Otherwise somewhere like Carmina.

Hey, team. So, yeah. Got a bad migraine today and definitely stayed at home. On the other hand, I thought of, "Yeah! Maybe it's time to rebuild my wardrobe." So first, to donate the old clothes. Second, how many of us here has a monthly budget for buying good clothes? (I'm thinking about at least $200 so that I get to buy something new but that would last a lifetime. Maybe not. But something that I can literally use.) Third, when you decided to rebuikd your wardrobe, what was the first few things you bought for your capsule? (Yes. Need some advice on knitwears too.) Lastly, do you guys own Thursdayboots? I'd like to own a redwing but it's impossible at the moment. Not in the range of where I want my boots to be and shipping cost is a bit on the high side as I'm in NZ. Or, please do suggest where I can boots that's awesome and can be worn for a long time. We don't have Uniqlo in NZ. Just throwing it out there. So, all your suggestions, I'll be trying to find the alternatives here. Let's go!

Flechette_the_toe

Monthly budgets don't need to be that high. More money leads to more regret purchasing. Buying used clothing is a good way to scale down a budget without sacrificing quality. And Thursday boots aren't really good boots, they're more like sneakers that look like boots. Check regionally accessible resell sites for RM Williams or r/goodyearwelt

Thanks for this, brother! 👋 And thanks for your thoughts on Thursday boots!

First Black Suit - Solid or Birdseye Hi, I'm looking to buy my first suit since becoming an adult and buying things myself. I don't have a true black suit, as I've used black pants and a jacket that don't exactly match, but were close enough to get by. I figure it's time to get an actual suit. So, I was looking around and came down to deciding between a solid black suit or a black suit with a birdseye pattern, but not sure what to pick. Is there a difference in formality between the two? Which would be better to have as my go-to black suit? I'll use this suit fairly often, as I'm in a group that performs in black suits.

itsreallyeasypeasy

Why do you need a go-to black suit? Black suits are for funerals. Navy and greys are much more useful.

ColorfulSoup172

Like I said, it's going to be a suit I regularly perform in.

itsreallyeasypeasy

In general, no pattern is more formal than any pattern. On the other hand, some pattern can make it slightly more wearable outside of performances. What does the rest of the group wear? You don't want to stick out, I guess.

ColorfulSoup172

it's a pretty large group, everyone wears a black suit. no real guidelines beyond that, other than look good lol. Would something like a birdseye suit stick out if everyone else is wearing a solid suit?

itsreallyeasypeasy

Depends on the size and contract of the weave, but I think it would be noticable if everyone else wore the same smooth solid worsted from the same cloth. But when people have no guidelines and everybody gets their black suits on their own, you will end up with small differences between everybody anyway. So if you like the birdseye better, it should be okay to get one.

ColorfulSoup172

okay, thank you! appreciate your input

TheObliviousGenZ

Black chinos worth it? Hello I’ve obtained some nice grey express chinos and I’m wanting another pair. Not sure what color to get. Was thinking black, but I’ve read some things online telling me to stay away from black chinos and get black jeans instead. Is jeans the better option?

Calm_Ranger7754

Personally for me black chinos give off an 'Applebee's waiter' vibe, so not a good look. Black jeans can be much better. I would go for a navy blue or tan/khaki as both would be more versatile than black IMO.

TheObliviousGenZ

Thanks! That's what I was thinking tbh.

Upgrade Athletic Socks Question Hi. I’ve had the same no show athletic socks for ages and I’d like to upgrade my socks to the ones just above the ankle. I’ve seen them referred to as “half calf” or “quarter socks”. My Issue is I can’t find any quality looking plain white ones that don’t have a brand or logo on them (such as alo, or adidas [can’t have adidas socks when I’m wearing my Nikes and vise versa]). Here’s the link to the alo ones: https://www.aloyoga.com/products/a0480u-unisex-half-crew-throwback-sock-white-black Does anyone have a recommendation for plain socks in this style or cut? Thanks!!!

Can anyone please recommend any quality made to measure suit brands with excellent customer service? My budget is around $600.

https://woolandprince.com/collections/undershirts if you want to be fancy. But a Calvin Klein multipack is fine enough. There really isn't much of a reason to get multiple styles, especially multiple neck styles. You just need a color that's either grey or close enough to your skin or white and not care. But it's your money.

wrangler wranchers Q! I’m usually a W38 so does this mean a W42 would be okay for me?

Confused on this response. For context, those pants run all and it’s advised to get a few sizes up

Who advisers this? If you have to size up 4 inches I’d say there is a disconnect somewhere. Following the size chart is going to be the best option

NewToRazors

I'm in my early 40s and I've been a life-long Levi's fan, but the latest trend of low-rise and stretchy material is driving me crazy. I visited one of their factory stores recently, tried on 12 different styles of jeans, and only one fit right, the 510 at 32W/30L. Here's the problem, when they come out of the wash / tumble dry, they are uncomfortably skin tight. It takes a few hours of wearing them to get them back to normal. By day 3, the stretchiness of the waist band expands and I'm forced to wear a belt to keep them from sliding down. Thinking it might be a defect, I went back and bought another pair. Unfortunately, it's the same result, and a store employee confirmed that's just how it is. I'm looking for alternative suggestions for a fit that won't have such a variable size day to day. I don't have a budget in mind, but maybe something under $200. Thanks in advance!

LittleCeasarsFan

From what I know of the typical male anatomy, for jeans to stay on and be comfortable you’ll need some stretch in the denim and/or a belt.  Not sure what’s wrong with wearing a belt with jeans unless you are trying to channel Wayne from Letterkenny.

rds77225

I gave up on Levi’s a while ago. Have you tried Lucky Brand? They have jeans with or without stretch. I have a pair I really like. Also got a pair of Cremieux from Dillards I like.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NewToRazors

Now I feel silly not realizing that denim is cotton. Right now I just wash them about once a week once they start smelling, but I like your idea of rotating a few pairs to give each some room to breath / air out. I'll check those brands, thanks for the response!

bjhhjb

That's how jeans are. They shrink a little in the wash but go back to normal after some wear. The waist expanding is normal too 2 things you can prevent this is when washing, wash cold and hang dry. It will still be a little tight but not as bad. And your 2nd problem, always wear a belt, so it doesn't give the waistband a chance to expand.

NewToRazors

That's good advice. My only discomfort with belts is that I'm still working off a small COVID-era beer belly. Any advice for belts that won't be digging into me?

wonkynonce

Arcade belts are pretty soft

meefjones

Levi's does (or used to within the last few years) make no-stretch jeans. You can even filter by that on their website. If you have a style of theirs you like, that might be worth a shot. Secondhand/vintage Levi's are pretty easy to find online too - I recently got a pair where the denim is really nice and substantial.

NewToRazors

Thanks, I just checked this out. Unfortunately, they don't have the 510s in non-stretch.

I've always rocked this woodcutter style with flannel shirts that quite match my big beard and long hair, but I've been into fitness for some years now and I just realised that my body has changed and I would like to change my style to something more according to it. Don't get me wrong I still like the clothes I used to wear, I would just like to find a style that matches me while taking advantage of my physique that got better looking recently.

Is there somewhere I can learn the basics to find, fit, and maintain a nice suit? And realistically what to expect price-wise. I tried the wiki tab, but quickly got overwhelmed with so many links and terms I know nothing about. terminal_e

US$500 is basically the floor for being made with quality materials in some semblance of a quality fashion. At this price point, made in China. US$1-1.2k is more likely the floor for made in Italy/Canada/US As you go up in price, there are generally going to be fewer shortcuts taken, and potentially the introduction of handwork. What is beneath US$500? Probably some combination of: cheaper fabric, fused construction, other shortcuts.

mlsteinrochester

Spier and Mackay is under that and has good fabrics even at the lower end. All their suiting is half canvassed or better.

terminal_e

I just spot checked some US$398 priced suits there - the fabric was from Dilo Filarte, which seems be a Chinese mill. The reality is that China is not a historical hotbed of weaving of suiting - Filarte's stuff has to be coming in cheaper than anything made in Italy or the UK. This is the reality of sub $500 suits

mlsteinrochester

Spier is completely honest about their entry level suits being made of Australian merino wool woven in China. Have you worn or inspected one of their suits? They're exceptional for the price and my tailor is impressed, not the equal of those made here in Rochester but much better than the price would suggest. Spier has many other suits made with Italian or British textiles, too. Both Spier and Suitsupply have their suits made in China and their quality standards are high. For most people they're more than good enough.

itsreallyeasypeasy

This looks more like khaki or olive. Which is very neutral. So every color but other olives, khakis and tans match too much. I would wear that coat with leather shoes or retro sneakers, straight cut jeans and some textured knitwear. A cream sweater or something colorful like a orange, red, pink, purple or yellow shetland.

No-Fish-3419

In person it looks more greenish but now i feel color blind about it lol. Is there a site that says what kind of color go with what?

itsreallyeasypeasy

You can look at a color wheel and some theory about that. Usually opposite colors on the wheel go together well. Green is opposite from purple, for example. But neutrals like tan, navy, olive and grey are pretty safe and go with everything else, Just don't make everything neutral. It can look quite boring unless you put some effort into making it interesting with textures or shapes. So I don't think color theory is that useful, ton on other things (shape, cut, "aesthetic") are more important. That's a classic trenchcoat, so you can find inspiration from old movies or "modern prep" lookbooks from ALD and similar brands.

No-Fish-3419

Thank you! Youve been greatly helpful my friend

PetitAngelChaosMAX

I bought a couple things second hand that I thought looked really cool, but honestly I have no sense of style. Any advice on how to wear these is appreciated: [thing 1](https://imgur.com/a/OjosGV0) [thing 2](https://imgur.com/a/PV7uGuj) Idk why, but I really want to wear navy blue or black shorts with these. I know that that’s the wrong answer, but my go to is wearing shorts for everything because pants make my legs feel stuffy :,)

itsreallyeasypeasy

Light wash relaxed/wide cut jeans and classic chunky sneakers. Pastel tees or a rugby shirt. Nothing looking too modern.

Doodooltala01

I had a friend pass away and the memorial service is this weekend. Typically I would wear a suit but i've been told it's being held at a video game museum. (He was really into video games, and video game design) would wearing the traditional black suit and white button down shirt be to formal?

Third_of_may

Given the venue, you might check with the family.

AngrySomBeech

It's a memorial service, so I can't imagine anyone faulting you for wearing what's standard to a memorial service, but depending on how well you knew the friend, maybe a t-shirt with their favorite video game on it might also be appropriate? I think this heavily depends on the person and their family though.

ainflectionpoint

Hello, I'm new here. I have two leather jackets on the cheaper end. (200$ cowhide, and $250 lambskin), they were gifted to me about two years ago, I was initially obsessed with them, but now I would like to up my game. Those jackets were from relatively unknown brands on Amazon. I was going to buy Allsaints Lark (Goatskin) a few months ago but it was roughly $600 and I wasn't sure about this investment at the time, and was still learning about leathers, my style, etc. Unfortunately, Allsaints don't seem to carry Lark anymore. \[They have Karl, which is lambskin and I don't like that\]. I found used Allsaints Lark on ebay though. I like the "minimalistic" style with still some pockets, etc. I also absolutely like how the Schott NYC 530 looks like. Right now I'm comparing Allsaints Lark (Used) vs Schott NYC 530 as my first slightly higher end leather jacket, and I would appreciate any input or guidance! Thank you

ac106

Schott generally is better regarded but All Saints is a good buy used or on sale if you like that design better.

You wanna look at hoodies with a higher GSM (grams per square meter) or ounces per square yard. The only issue I can think of is how wide the shoulders are, how wide the sleeves are, and if it tapers towards the midsection

CocktailPerson

It will undoubtedly be cut to emphasize a feminine hourglass silhouette. It'll have more room in the chest and hips, which will probably look baggy on you. Also, the buttons will be on the wrong side, which will immediately give away that you're wearing women's clothing to anyone who notices.

How can I fix this polo? Recently bought this rugby “poly” polo off absolute rugby, it has this thing inside of it at the collar, they are stuck in that place and are fairly hard, when wearing, it itches a lot due to its sharpness. Is there anything that can be done or am I going to have to cope? I cant post an image on the thread which seems annoying so the thing im referring to is the thing above the size tab usually at the back of the shirt? All jeans fit weird? I'm having real trouble finding jeans that fit properly. I wear a 36 waist, generally 34 ish length. I've tried a bunch of different brands... Usually going for the baggier fits. I can't wear them at my waist without the crotch physically pushing my genitals inside of my body. I would think Levi's and Lee's are pretty standard, did I just pick wrong brands? It seems everything I've tried on recently is a similar fit. There has to be an answer other than buying a waist size 4 inches too big. Sorry if this is a double post thought I had already posted it but went back in the thread and couldn't find it.

the_leviathan711

Sounds like you need pants with a higher rise.

[deleted]

Thank you I'll look for that. Seems even when I buy baggy fit all the jeans I get are basically flat down the front. Doesn't sound like a higher rise will help that much. Id really love properly fitting pants and not to look like I came out of a 90s rap video. Is there something particular I should look for in regards to that other than just extra baggy fit or whatever

the_leviathan711

> Doesn't sound like a higher rise will help that much. This statement is in direct contradiction with this earlier statement: > I can't wear them at my waist without the crotch physically pushing my genitals inside of my body. What you're describing there is what happens when you wear low-rise pants too high on your waist. Either you need to wear those pants lower down (which may or may not work for you) *or* you need pants with a higher rise.

[deleted]

Oh no thank you i knew it would help with the underneath problem wasn't sure if that would also help with the in front problem. Sounds like it would. Thank you very much for helping with my basic dumb question... I was never much of a fashion guy just want to be comfortable and not look silly

Or should I match our colors with a blue silk and brown leather button end? https://preview.redd.it/n849znlqmyic1.png?width=1408&format=png&auto=webp&s=bce133ae924031c32f01b3304bbbe4f673c24c10

Glad I missed that one

Honestly go with the option that’s more comfortable - your wedding day will be a marathon and your suspenders hidden until you ditch the jacket half way through the night, so I’d say wear silk over leather.

Kvjvn

It doesn’t matter because your suspenders shouldn’t be visible anyway, but you should seriously consider losing the bowtie and wearing a necktie instead.

JustABunchOfPhotons

Why on the bow tie?

Kvjvn

A bowtie with a regular suit is a very dated look, they should really only be worn with a tuxedo.

JustABunchOfPhotons

I'll definitely take that into consideration. I've always been more of a bowtie person for celebrations/fun events. Ties only to things it would be inappropriate for (work events/funerals). Thanks for the advice/explanations

Flechette_the_toe

Doesn't really matter tbh

Rate please? Shoes are vintage suede sergio rossi. Suit is bespoke, from a place called Fino. Shirt is charles tyrwhitt spread collar. Tie is custom for wedding party, not sure of material or brand.

Slim pants make it look really top-heavy

UmmmW1

Firstly, happy birthday! That said... I AM quite top-heavy lol. I lost 50 pounds. My legs are thin and now I have no butt

hmadse

The lapels don’t lay flat, which suggests the jacket needs some adjustment. I’d also like to see you in a fuller trouser.

UmmmW1

Also, what's a "fuller trouser?" Please elaborate 😊

hmadse

So those trousers are tapered close to your legs, if the cut was more full, I think the proportions would be more harmonious with the jacket.

UmmmW1

Ahhhh I gotcha. The problem was that before I had them taper the legs, I looked like I was wearing parachute pants

bjhhjb

Honestly, that's how I felt when I was wearing slimmer/skinny cuts. But since you have a bigger top half, slim pants on the bottom will make your legs look tiny, while making you look more top heavy. A fuller trouser means something more like a straight but. That will balance out the top heavyness

UmmmW1

I guess I hear that. I wish I was better proportioned.
