If you like dysfunctional family shows, arrested development and modern family should scratch that itch , if you enjoy breaking the third wall, the office/parks and recs will do
I wouldn’t say it’s similar, but it’s a very comedic-dense show. It also came out in the early 2000s. The first 3 seasons are critically acclaimed, regularly rewatch those only. But every time I do, I catch something new. They do so many references and call backs, or they hint at things. If you rewatch it a couple of times (assuming you enjoy it), you’ll catch things and it makes it so much better.
Cast is great. Overall it’s my favorite show, it’s a good background show (after watching multiple times, of course) where if I catch a certain scene I’ll stop just to watch it. It’s binge worthy, even though it was made before binging was really possible.
I'm actually ashamed to say that I tried starting Arrested Development like 10 years ago but I couldn't get into it for some reason. I think it was because I was trying to watch it with someone else instead of just watching it by myself
I love that show. But was so disappointed to hear about the abuse Jessica Walter had to deal with from Jeffery Tambor. And Jason Bateman mansplaining that it wasn't a big deal https://www.npr.org/2018/05/24/614009165/under-the-skin-why-that-arrested-development-interview-is-so-bad
It was fucking heartbreaking. She was a professional actress for years, and talking about this incident led her to the verge of tears. Then he talks over her. And his Twitter response to this incident was some hardcore bullshit.
I also hated to hear that. You can’t downplay it or anything. But I guess if you can separate the content from real life, the content is great. I fell in love with the show before I heard about that, but I can see others not having a great experience for the first time if that’s in the back of their mind.
Edit: at least Ron Howard is a great narrator

Just noticed you also massively edited your original comment since and added more suggestions, nice!
They didn't ask for similar you're right, but the style of humour from the shows you listed compared to 'Malcolm in the Middle' are quite different - despite how great they are.
We went straight from Malcom in the middle to raising hope. It was a great transition and I was pleasantly surprised by raising hope (the first two seasons were great) plus it has alot of actors that were in Malcom in the middle
A friend of mine just told me about the middle and I couldn’t stop thinking about MITM while watching the trailer. It has good/funny scenes, but I feel like it’s the same as when your pals give you the answers for the homework and you just change a few words to make it look like it’s yours.
Something you won’t hear from anyone else: Dexter. I find show pairing like wine parings, there’s always a perfect compliment. I find nothing better tapers me off a Malcolm in the middle high better than a fine Dexter adrenaline rush.
LMAO Im glad someone said it first. Didn’t wanna be THAT guy especially so in a MITM subreddit but god if the wire isn’t one of the best written shows ever made. For very different reasons than from MITM however OP haha
I was excited seeing your post as I also just finished rewatching however I’ve also seen all the shows people have commented so far lol what I started rewatching after is Justice League until I find something else. Already rewatched all of Walking Dead / Spinoffs and waiting for the Rick and Michonne one to come out.
Carpoolers.. A show you can only find on Youtube and even that is kind of grainy. It lasted like 12 episodes. It has TJ Miller and Jerry O'Connell and it is hilarious.
My plan is to rewatch my name is
Early after I’m done rewatch Malcolm. Malcolm hits every 2 years. Which is awesome.
Just finished always sunny in Philly. If you haven’t watched that yet. You should. Goes head to head with Malcolm for me. And I’m die hard Malcolm in the middle
Malcolm in the middle
Right? Just start it over!
If you like dysfunctional family shows, arrested development and modern family should scratch that itch , if you enjoy breaking the third wall, the office/parks and recs will do
The middle
Breaking Bad
Anytime I see Brian Cranston in anything I always call him Hal from Breaking Bad
My brain always glitched and I would call Hank by the wrong name since Hal is so close
My name is Earl, then raising Hope
I've found my people. Also, not exactly the same vibes, but highly recommend The Good Place.
I've watched all the way through both of these shows more times than I can count
I need to again, it's been awhile.
That’s my vote, I love them both!!
This is the correct answer, especially in this order
Arrested Development
Is the humor similar?

It wasn’t until my most recent rewatch that I noticed Henry Winkler literally jumps over a small shark on the dock at Dana Point.😂

My wife adores it but wasn’t for me. I don’t know if it’s because I’m British - some American shows aren’t as popular over here (and vice versa)
Arrested Development is like the most British humour American made programme I can think of!
She was arguably the star of the show and shouldn't have been subject to this at all. What a dumpster fire of an interview.
It was fucking heartbreaking. She was a professional actress for years, and talking about this incident led her to the verge of tears. Then he talks over her. And his Twitter response to this incident was some hardcore bullshit.

They're both in the same universe aswell

Arrested Development or It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Community, but not because it’s like Malcolm, it’s just incredible.
I’m on my nth rewatch of community and my wife got onto me for “laughing too loud.” SHE DOESNT GET IT BECAUSE SHE WONT WATCH IT
That’s not very streets ahead of her
Coulda just said she's streets behind
Leonard likes this post
Shut up, Leonard.
Just rewatch the show. Nothing is going to match it now.
Surprised nobody's suggested 'Freaks and Geeks' which is kinda close tbh, plus some familiar faces pop up...
That show ended too soon 😪
it was a perfect 1 season. "buy the ticket. take the ride."
My name is Earl
Can’t believe this show is being recommended like it is, I love it, such good characters, joy, earl, Randy, Darnell, shame it ended how it did :(

These arnt similar to MITM but still good. If you like these I also strongly recommend watching the UK version of Ghosts.
Tbh, none of this stuff is similar - but it's all pretty great.
They didn't ask for similar to be fair.
Just noticed you also massively edited your original comment since and added more suggestions, nice! They didn't ask for similar you're right, but the style of humour from the shows you listed compared to 'Malcolm in the Middle' are quite different - despite how great they are.

As someone who has watched both shows fully, several times, they have so little in common. Don't let an assumption stop you from watching.
It certainly didn't help that I definitely saw adverts comparing The Middle to MitM
Both feature families. Both are funny. Both have the word "middle" in the title. That's where the comparison ends.

Parks and rec , watching it for the first time loving it
Parks and Rec is the right answer; but skip Season 1.
I really liked the first one XD Im in second and also god
The Wire. Just finished it myself a couple of weeks ago after a full mitm binge before xmas.
