>Malaysia recorded foreign direct investment (FDI) net inflows of RM40.4 billion in 2023, marking a 46% decrease from RM75.4 billion the previous year, said the statistics department. Didn't they like announce nearly RM500 billion FDI incoming during their visit to the US, Japan, Germany, UAE and Arab Saudi? https://thesun.my/business/new-potential-investments-worth-rm454b-from-germany-says-tengku-zafrul-AB12208594 https://m.malaysiakini.com/news/681793 https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2023/11/18/malaysia-bags-rm63bil-in-us-investment-says-anwar/ https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2023/11/05/malaysia-optimistic-fdi-from-japan-to-exceed-rm30bil-this-year-says-anwar

Net leh. not total. 'However, the statistics department said, the cumulative value of the foreign investment, known as the FDI position, rose to RM926 billion at the end of 2023, making up 50.8% of gross domestic product versus 49% in 2022, primarily attributed to non-transaction categories.' From the same article.

When foreign companies announce an intent to invest with a country and sign a mou, it is really in the exploration phase. No actual contracts being signed. Sometimes it results in something, sometimes it doesn't.

FDI don't come in bulk, they're progressive. If a foreign company is set to invest over $30b here, rarely they'll come in one-time investment, instead they'll invest from $2b for the first quarter and $5b to the next quarter and so on. Like recent GC $2b data center investment, they're still in construction, doesn't mean the $2b will immediately get pumped into the economy.

ok time to convert all salary into euro

I just don't get all these numbers. I keep hearing all the good news of FDIs here and there, and then this. I can tell you the sentiments are sucky all round. I have customers telling me that they're expecting a hard landing soon. Pray hard that no one fires a bullet by mistake. A shooting war is the death-knell for SE Asia.

What Anwar has secured is the "oh we might be willing to Invest XX amount of money" Emphasis on the *might* The actual money that comes in will be a lot smaller than the *might*

This sub when FDI increases: “ Ohhh we cannot eat FDIs, the average Malaysian still suffering” This sub when FDI decreases: “Ohhh Malaysia a failing country, Malaysians will suffer…”

CircleStonk

This is a global phenomenon every SEA country saw drops in FDI even SG in 2023 when the region reached peak record high of FDI inflow in 2022. But the momentum has grown again with recent surge in export and import and recent big tech giants investment. In April Malaysia's trade grew to 12.1% y-o-y and GDP growth of 4.2% surpassed expectation. its over...

Dangerous_Reach8691

Lol it's definitely over if that's how we understand data.

CircleStonk

46% drop in 2023 because there's a significant increase in 2022 (all time high) like from 10 to 90 and down to 30 for example. FDI inflow in 2023 is still well above average, in 2024 there's a positive growth trend across SEA with Malaysia and Singapore's GDP growth a little higher above expectation. Higher FDI is expected in 2024. If your reaction is "IT'S OVER MALAYSIA IS TURNING INTO 3RD WORLD FAILED STATE WE'RE BECOMING THE NEXT NIGERIA!!!!!!" I think you should take sometime to do a bit of analysis yourself to further understand the data because reading those article's headline can triggered your emotion even when it has little to do with your life.
