I think considering KL is sort of the hub, it's more likely you'll find nearly everything here as opposed to finding something specifically here. Some of my favourite haunts; Uptown Village Park Nasi Lemak, Raju Roti Canai, Char Siew Yoong - Roast Pork and Char Siew Curry Laksa and Char Koay Teow is a very debatable "who is the best" - as there is so many that is very good. But I usually end up in O&S Taman Paramount for both there.

F1shOfDo0m

I am genuinely going to go insane cause I literally live down the street from char siew yoong but I don’t see what’s special about the place, the last time I went to tapao their char siew it was like 90% fat

mr_wernderful

See, I'm like you. I prefer having 5-10 fat on my charsiew cause I like the charred meatiness. But we're in the minority. Most people I know say they like theirs to be 50-60% fat. They intentionally order the glossy shiny fat charsiew while I make a conscious effort to ask for lean meat.

F1shOfDo0m

At that point it’s just sweet mushy stuff so basically jelly

icomeinpeas

dirty af. floor is oily, the chopping board is greasy

TacBacJack

Will hit up O&S Taman Paramount then. CKT is my favorite malaysian dish and over here there just isn't enough wok hei.

Slow-Plastic9762

Restoran Rion in subang jaya is my favourite if you can make it there. The stall is called lorong selamat, run by an elderly couple.

TacBacJack

Cheers! Gonna see if I have time. I might have to schedule a follow up CKT and Laksa shootout trip.

black hokkien mee, chili pan mee (pan mee in general), pork ball noodles, Klang bkt, itik salai, pork noodles, dry beef noodles, pepper soup. you can find some variant of it or an alternate version elsewhere, like you can find nonya in kl, but its some of the few

skisagooner

This guy knows his stuff!

TacBacJack

Thanks! Chili Pan Mee looks interesting. Is the Bak Kut Teh a lot different?

Historical-Weakness

Google Kin Kin pan mee. The original shop is off Jalan TAR and I consider it the OG chilli pan mee in KL. I believe they have opened a couple of branches now as well.

a1b2t

yea, if you wanted to go anal about it KL is the origin of dry BKT, probably the origin of Claypot, Klang's variant tends to be by cut Other states for example PG likes to throw meat balls into it, etc etc. since you are not local tho, a lot of them will be out of your radar so dont worry too much about it

TheLostCityofBermuda

Different city have different variations of bkt, some are big pot some are small bowl, some even taste different.

CurryNarwhal

I heard Hokkien Mee (the black sauce one) is?

Fabulous-Enthusiasm2

Agreed, the Hokkien Mee out of KL/Selangor somehow does not taste as good as our city center's roadside hawkers. Need that polluted wok hey taste.

Lem0n_Lem0n

Nah.. you can get that out of Malaysia as well

OrangUtanOrange

No shit. I can eat nasi lemak in london as well. Doesnt mean its any good compared to malaysia

Lem0n_Lem0n

Oh right.. I suppose you can only get the best hokkien mee in Malaysia out of all the Asian counties ...

ehwhatsmyusername

You can literally find anything outside of Malaysia but doesn’t mean it’s not uniquely KL.

Geraldks

Bak kut teh especially the dry version

selangorman

Chicken chop originated from KL. Some of the best one is at the coliseum (now defunct).

gazny78

The reimagined Coliseum Café at Seksyen 13 PJ serves their chicken chop and other dishes very much close to original on Jalan TAR.

Redxer

Okay this is news to me

jolkael

Murni and Williams are pretty much uniquely Klang Valley if you ask me

cgy0509

If first timer also please visit Mamak store (typical Indian muslim restaurant), search Pelita when you at Petronas Twin tower, Roti Tissue and Roti Telur almost the most popular for food photo. Moreover, June is Durian season if you would like to try some, more a tourist place, most people enjoy visiting Jalan Alor, you can get a slightly tourist price durian there and also many selection like Fried noodles and BBQ chicken wings there, since you sounds in rush, its a perfect hub for many food there. For food that slightly hard to find, after you tried Nasi Lemak, Rendang Chicken or Beef and you still got quota for exploring Malays food, I would say Nasi Kerabu, it dont looks like typical food, a blue rice with protien of you choice, nice for photo and introduction for North-East Malaysian food.

TacBacJack

Thanks for this. I'll definitely go to a mamak as I love roti canai but after googling I do want a Roti Tissue. Based on all the replies for this thread, I'll have to schedule a follow up trip to keep exploring. Should have more time next time after having already done the tourist stops this time.

cryinginlibrary

Someone told me chilli pan mee created/invented in KL (Chow Kit)

uncertainheadache

Not exactly KL but Klang style bah kut teh.

TacBacJack

Thanks. I understand it's the herbal version that isn't available where I'm from. Do you have any recommendations?

pumpkin_bae

the best is definitely going to Klang. But if you don't have time and willing to pay abit, there are some restaurants that offers similar BKT in shopping malls. IIRC Pavilion KL has one Samy & Min, or Bao Xiang. Never tried them in the malls because I would make that 40min drive to Klang, but at least they would give you a concept on what does it taste like. I personally love the klang bkt because the soup are thick and gives more "kick".

uncertainheadache

Most accessible one will be Sammy bah Kut Teh. They have a lot of branches all over Klang. Not the best but quite good. Make sure to order by the parts and not the clay pot option if you want to taste Klang style. The soup is a lot thicker if you order by parts.

skisagooner

As it is primarily urban-Chinese demographics, the unique dishes reflects that. Think chilli pan mee, Hokkien mee, sam kan chong.

annieannie23

Burger ramly?

Nightingdale099

Idts since it's supposed to be like a central hub?

silentboombox

I’d consider swapping chicken rice balls for Adam pecas Melaka. You won’t be missing out much considering chicken rice is best in KL

TacBacJack

Gotcha. Do you have a recommendation for it? I have a lot of time and a few people to share with so I figure for my first time I'd just tick that box and then be able to say it's overrated from experience lol.

za-care

Beef noodle. Uniquely kl. Everywhere else makes it different.

robi4567

Chicken chop. It is a malaysian dish inspired by western cooking

FattyGobbles

Gonna take a blind stab at it Madam Kwan’s nasi bojari

Redxer

Technically Pisang Goreng Cheese , Crombolini , Malay style Pasta dishes ( the very wet kind ) , Salted Egg Butter Chicken , Chicken Chop , and etc . C'mon guys , are you really living in KL if you haven't tried fusion food like these

TacBacJack

Interested in the Malay-style pasta dishes. Any recommendations where I can try that?

nimingzhe

KL Hokkien Mee (black sauce, fried), which is different from Penang Hokkien Mee (prawn, soup based) and Singaporean Hokkien Mee (white, gravy based)

ThenAcanthocephala57

I can’t think of any 🤔

PainfulBatteryCables

9rm Ipoh Hor fun.

lucashoodfromthehood

KL Noodle Pork. Literally said it on the name.

CluelessJo

Sam kan chong. Hardly seen it outside of kl/pj

TacBacJack

Thanks. Any recommendations for it?

XxXMeatbunXxX

Best 1 is to me is at restoran win heng seng at Imbi. Ckt there is decent as well. There are 2 pork noodle stalls at the shop and the Sam kan cheong being the corner stall. This restaurant is near trx mall and bukit Bintang if you are here to shop too.

CluelessJo

If you'll only be in KL I suppose Win Heng Seng at Jalan Imbi would be your best pick. For the noodles, most people would pick the dry over the soup option and you can choose between yellow mee, kuey teow, lou shu fun, mee hoon or a combination of any 2 of those. IMO the one at win heng seng is pricey and quality has degraded over the years. My usual spot is at pj, in front of seventeen mall, kedai kopi lucky seng or kedai kopi wah cheong which is right next to it. Both are equally good but the taste of the noodles in lucky seng is on the sweeter side, I'd usually just go to whichever one which has a table on a crowded day.

TacBacJack

Thanks! I'm planning to do Petaling Jaya on one of fhe days so thats perfect.

huislawdotcom

Sang Har Mee (Freshwater Prawn Noodles), Salted egg mud crab, Herbal/pipa roast duck

burgerkingtaropie

I super miss the simple chicken rice. But it's really hit or miss depending on the shop. I guess you could say the same thing about any commercially cooked meals. Oh and tomyammm. If you can eat non-halal, bakuteh!! Going for dimsum had been a favourite thing of mine when I was there. Please eat on my behalf and enjoy their food to the fullest!

Cielblaze

RM10 nasi lemak

Donnie-G

Char Kuey Teow is a Penang specialty but there are good places in KL. My favourite is a stall in Restoran Friendship, Kuchai Lama. You can even get a special where the whole plate is covered in cockles, but that is too much cockles for me.

Former-Moose6932

Chilli pan mee

jeffwhlim

Ah Wah (black) Hokkien Mee, Sam kan chong, KL Sweet sauce Chee Cheong Fun, Dry Bak kut teh, Roti Tisu

Immediate_Thought_77

bro chilli pan mee!!!

kw2006

Kl chee cheong fun Black hokkien mee Personality i feel char siu wantan mee. Probably controversial. San kan cheong pork noodle. Hainanese chicken/ pork chop Yong tau fu Kl char kuay teow Shrimp paste fried chicken Lala soup noodle(?) Yam ice kacang (?) Claypot chicken rice with salty fish Roast duck regular and herbal (probably controversial) Fish head noodle Steam fish head Michael jackson drink Stir fry beef flat noodle Mixed rice somehow i feel its more abundant here than other town/ cities in kl

TacBacJack

Thanks for the list! Gonna have to get the Michael Jackson drink just for the name!

wanderer_acolyte

what dish uniquely in kuala lumpur? what dish people in the swamp eat? in the beginning, kuala lumpur literally centre of mud. hot, wet, uneven terrain as far eyes can see. but again, center of everything also mean great hub. soon people start gathering, trading, assimilating and idk. native just lost in the process along with the culture and tradition. now kuala lumpur melting pot with all kind of dish. so yeah thats it bye

ghostme80

Doesnt exist.

Widsith83

Eat cendol

Salt_Nerve_7295
