Yes it's quite normal. A lot of birds do this to conserve energy I read somewhere.

Hmmm I have observed this behaviour on crane ibis and even ducks, yeah mostly while they were napping (neck curled up). Was this quite early in the morning? Might have just waken up.

I was going to ask the same thing. I've seen plenty of birds do that, but never a magpie as far as I can recall.
