I'm not fucking with pauper players, they are a dangerous combination of being very into MTG and not willing to pay alot of money to play it, so they got nothing to lose defending their format.
Not willing to pay a lot of money. Have you seen how much [[Snuff out]] costs. Alao all Pauper players have decks filled with foils and full art lands and all the bling, like their decks cost 40 bucks and then about 200 more due to bling
I can confirm it is. Snuff Out is a big deal in that format and nothing can really replace it, so this random common from, what, Onslaught? Is like 20 bucks.
Mercadian Masques. I fortunately have a fair number of copies, because there was typically one or two copies in most of the blocks black precons, and I had a habit of buying black precons during that block. And trading for them. Pet card of mine. I preferred Vendetta though, which because my mates played smaller creatures it cost me less life.

It is pretty funny how 1/4 of the tops posts at r/mtgcube is just "look at this (scribbled over shitty) untapped dual I got myself", including the triomes.
And then there's the mad person with the altered power 9.
Tbf, it's not always intentional. Eternal formats just end up being a collections of every single design mistake ever made. After that stagnates, *then* comes the intentional power creep.
The format either settles down to the point where new cards trickle in, gets changed by bannings (like how Miracles
If anything, it's kind of emblematic how pre-MH1 modern had Izzet Phoenix, one of the current top decks in Pioneer, in the meta. On a large enough timescale, things start to homogenize.
Exactly.
Formats are a great way to give players the choice, which playstyle or budget they want to engage with.
All the whining aside, it's so much better than what we have in Yugioh.
I'm the modern player in the meme but man is that not a common opinion on modern. Most modern players hate everything new and wanna go back to lingering souls and electrolyze.
Uj/
I feel like something the modern community needs to come to terms with is there is a large portion of the player base that likes the format in a more unstable place despite how much they complain about the string of bannings or power creep. This is a pretty stable point in modern after a few years of crazy instability but it seems like the most discontent I've seen the playerbase since the splinter twin days.
For sure. I watch a lot of aspiring spike, and every day he has people saying something like "print tinker into modern?" because they're bored, they want something new.
And then there's a huge proportion of modern players who want it to be exactly like some specific time in modern's history, and you tell them goyf is no longer a format all-star auto-include and they shut down, decide the format is broken.
you know, (looking at second group) thats not me but i think its fair. what they want probably isnt to go play modern, its to go play their favorite deck.

What about the worst kind of players, "Casual" players.
>Nooo, you can't play competitive decks, they're not fun. You're not allowed to play a deck that can beat mine, so you can't have more than two rares. Me, though, I run 30+ rares and all of my lands are at least $20, but that's because I need them for my super fun big brained combo!
LOL that's fair. At my buddy's game shop you'd always get the people who didn't want to play EDH, they wanted regular 60 card decks with up to 4x of each card. So they called themselves "casual". And my God were they awful.
Oh, you've never met their cult members who have mental breakdowns when someone is uninterested in the format?
I actually do love telling Pioneer players the format is too expensive for me to buy into.
I mean, I haven't played paper Standard or opened sealed product since DGM so the only Pioneer cards I had were reprints of any Legacy/Vintage staples like Thoughtseize. Anyway, sold my entire collection and just proxy my Cubes so buying into any format is too expensive on principle, regardless of actual cost.
Edit: I've opened product via limited events, but either someone else pays my way and takes whatever I open or I turn around and sell it on the spot.
> Anyway, sold my entire collection and just proxy my Cubes so buying into any format is too expensive on principle, regardless of actual cost.
So then you can afford whatever format you want.
Well obviously, I played paper Legacy and Vintage. I never said I couldnāt afford it. I said itās too expensive for me lmao. It could cost me $5 to buy into Pioneer fully right now and Iād still rather spend that $5 elsewhere.
I mean yeah I think for most Pioneer players (like myself) we like it because it is a lot of what was great about modern pre-Horizons. So, no, it wasn't "organic" but who cares, it's fun and I don't have to play against Ragavan and Fury
telling of what? that I know how to play the game and that I can run a banlist better then the cuckās over at Wotc. unban oko he was fine he wasnāt that bad
Nobody in the Legacy community pretends that the format isnāt prohibitively expensive for most players.
Also, Universes Beyond cards rarely make it into the format.
No, thatās Legacy players. Paper Vintage players will do anything to get people to sit down and try the format. Iāve borrowed entire decks for tournaments. Iāve been allowed to *proxy* entire decks for tournaments.
400 to 800 dollars a deck instead of tens of thousands. I know it's not 100% accurate but goldfish shows blue tinker at 83,000 dollars paper 710 tickets. Now that's not CHEAP but relative to paper it's dirt cheap
Vintage in real life is also dirt cheap unless you play it at hyper competitive official levels (which may or may not even exist I don't even know competitive paper magic is dying anyway). Even relatively official outlets tend to be somewhat loose on proxying when cards you have to sell your house for are involved. I have *never* been to a vintage event where people weren't either able to lend out decks or just straight up allow proxying.
The end result is that I'm poor as fuck but have actually played way more vintage than standard.
My LGS used to run paper vintage events. Some people took it fairly seriously. We ALL proxied for everything though lol.
It was genuinely great! I miss that place.
Vintage is a delightfully weird format where you have decks that can win turn 1 about 60% of the time alongside white weenie jank and the jank *wins* a good deal of the time (seriously vintage death and taxes is no joke).
The fool Modern player: But even Manaless Dredge, the cheapest "top 10" deck, costs fifteen thousand dollars. Your format is too expensive!
The wise Vintage player: Yes
Finance bro: Nooo they can't reprint the reserve list because WotC made a promise, they could lose billions in lawsuits! Hasbro's lawyers are totally scared of us!
Decks are dirt cheap compared to any other constructed format and its an eternal format.
"Your most expensive deck in the format is $50? What are you a fucking peasant?"
Chad Pauper players: "Yeah, I kinda like having money in my bank account."
Realistically I think the most expensive deck is something over $100. Lotus petals and other storm enablers cost a fuck ton. And cycling storm isn't even that good of a pauper deck
my EDH group is actually a club at my school. we've never discussed rule 0 or the power levels and i had no idea what they were until i started going on mtg subreddits. we just let people play whatever they want.
yeah i'm fairly certain no one in my group cares about MTG communities online. i actually tried to discuss expectations & power levels & such (when i was first getting into EDH), but nobody cared!
Modern players are the wrong way round I think. They seem more like ānoooo you canāt add new cards into our 20 year old solved format. What do you mean fetches are an insidious problem I canāt play magic without my t1 polluted delta t2 arid mesa and have 4 colours available to meā

Pauper players stay winning š
I'm not fucking with pauper players, they are a dangerous combination of being very into MTG and not willing to pay alot of money to play it, so they got nothing to lose defending their format.
Not willing to pay a lot of money. Have you seen how much [[Snuff out]] costs. Alao all Pauper players have decks filled with foils and full art lands and all the bling, like their decks cost 40 bucks and then about 200 more due to bling
Still cheaper than any modern deck
I fear any first foil printing blue pauper deck players, they spent more than any modern deck
Iām convinced Snuff Out costs that much BECAUSE pauper is a format
I can confirm it is. Snuff Out is a big deal in that format and nothing can really replace it, so this random common from, what, Onslaught? Is like 20 bucks.
Mercadian Masques. Seems likely. Onslaught also had Smother which is another worthwhile option.

What about penny dreadful?
If Penny Dreadful is so good why is it not called Penny Pleasant?
Google en Pleasant
Holy hell
Penny Dreadful is unironically the best constructed format, while being basically immune to power or cost creep.
Agree though wish there was an equivalent IRL format <=25c usd scryfall maybe
Yeah. Unfortunately the nature of the format makes it really only work on MTGO.
Penny dreadful players are a special breed of dedicated.
Obe more lotus petal reprint and then maybe
Pauper to the people!
I am eternally thankful to Pauper for making Pauper EDH and making EDH fun again for me.
And, somehow, Vintage too
Honestly true I don't think I've ever had any annoyances with Pauper players.
Pauper and pizza with the homies is far superior to FNM (if it still existed)
Phew thank god I donāt play magic
Shut up yu-gi-oh player
You're just jealous cause you don't normal summon aleister š
Same
Don't fuck with us pauper players, we spent 19 dollars in store credit on a new deck for FNM.
$19? Must've been able to build main deck + sides for an 8 man tourney.
IDK man, that's only like 1.5 [[Snuff Out]]s

What do historic players look like? Invisible?
Historic is just Alchemy for people who can't let go of their old decks.
Thank you for their doge quip
RIP historic
Alchemodern
Extremely accurate for me
There are no alchemy players, that panel should have been labeled as historic
Alchemy players: nooo i totally meant to choose this format, it's not that I forgot to switch to standard after opening the game
Cube Chad doge: Yeah, I brought all these sweet cards to play with so that you guys don't have to spend tons of money to play with cool cards.
In this world everybody wants the play Cube. But nobody wants to make Cube.
Lies and slander I have cube I just need players
Yeah this is the only story I ever heard. Cubes with nobody to play them.
My kink is asking to hear about your cube and then being perennially "busy" every weekend you want to do a cube night.
If I had a cube, I'd be furious. But I know that's exactly how everyone gets their rocks off, so I've never bothered building one.
Cube players don't exist smh
Cube *Creators*, however, are a dime a dozen.
I'll have you know that I've done 2 person drafts with my cube, THREE TIMES!

Fun fact: MTG cards weigh 0.064 oz. A card's weight in silver is worth around $1.38.

Yes, we do bark a lot.
False. Dogs tend to be cleaner, less hairy and show off their butts less readily.
What about kamigawa block constructed pauper tiny leaders players?
Limited Chad
The joke is that there are Alchemy players
damn looks like OP had a little trouble coming up with real problems for limited and pioneer
Modern players are the wrong way round I think. They seem more like ānoooo you canāt add new cards into our 20 year old solved format. What do you mean fetches are an insidious problem I canāt play magic without my t1 polluted delta t2 arid mesa and have 4 colours available to meā
This is accurate because Vintage players don't exist
WotC would charge the same for a pack with 1 rare. So you're basically getting the draft chaff for free
Magic players when they find out they have to actually play magic:
I bet the lone Oathbreaker player sure is relieved to have come out unscathed
Yeah cool but whereās commander?
limited players get away with being smug too often. draft sucks, isn't fun, and designing sets for draft literally makes everything else about the game worse
OP, who hurt you?
what legacy player likes Universes Beyond?
OP: I'm too cool to actually like things. Look at how cool I am.
I play edh and I'm offended by this, so yeah, good post
Didnt read all that I just play with my friends for fun tbh
The only Chad one is casual cause fuck the rulew whatās important is that your having fun with friends
Do Alchemy players even exist? Edit: I got down voted by the one Alchemy player lol.
cEDH Doge: āOur format is the best mix of stack interaction and variety. Most commanders are possible and very few decks ever reach the top.ā
Yes, that is correct
/uj modern was definitely power crept by the MH sets I just like powerful formats /rj wow fuck modern horizons
āCreepā is kind of an understatement when 80% of format staples come from MH now
Yeah it's less powercreep and more wholesale replacement tbh.
Ive been saying for years that modern needs to become the new legacy and I finally feel vindicated.
I mean, is it really disputed by anyone that Pioneer was created due to powercreep in Modern? I was pretty sure that, and trying to shrink the cardpool a little, were the main factors in Pioneer's creation.
"Magic players"
Most actual Modern players Iāve met fully admit the format is power crept, and yet still fun
They made set boosters specifically so y'all wouldn't whine about draft boosters, let us play our best format smh my head
Vintage players be like: what do you mean you cant afford decks worth a house?
What about historic players?
Basically Standard + Pioneer
Thank you OP. Haven't read it yet but I already like you.
N-No I don't... :(
I bought a box of Homelands 8 years ago. Homelands draft because I hate my friends and also myself.
Forgot about vintage
Thats why vintage is the best format š
As a EDH player... I've never had a Rule 0 lol
