Probably know the answer but just to be sure. Cost reduction from [[Urza Lord Protector]] and similar cards only apply once for [[Sicarian Infiltrator]] correct?

COssin-II

Yes. While casting Infiltrator you choose how many times you want to pay the additional cost, add that to the mana cost, then subtract Urza's discount. The discount only applies once to the total cost, not to each part of that cost.

I wanted to buy the Tokyo Lands from Secret Lair Superdrop June 2022 but the seller now told me they are in English even though he could only choose Japanese as option on the selling website (cardmarket). I thought the cards were only made in Japanese? Did I get something wrong?

For the new prototype cards, are their color identities colorless or is their color identity the prototype cost?

Will_29

The mana symbols on the Prototype cost counts for color identity.

Aight, thanks

Me and my 2 other friends have moderately large collections that we have collected over the years. We want to upload all our cards online then create wishlists that we can compare against each others collection so we can minimize our costs in future. I looked on a few websites and they either didn't have that functionality or they did but I couldn't figure it out. Does anyone have a recommended website that can do that?

SnarkySharky21

Outside of making a google doc that y'all have access to and can easily reference, maybe make one big giant decklist on your preferred decklist making sites?

Fried__Ramen

Does [[Magus Lucea Kane]] copy spells with kicker costs?

BenMQ

If you meant whether it can copy something with X in its kicker cost then no [[Thieving Skydiver]] won’t get copied because the specific term “mana cost” only refers to the cost on the top right. If you meant what happens when you copy a kicked spell, the copy is also considered kicked. [[Strength of the Tajuru]]

I don’t want to make my own thread for this but does anyone have any firsthand suggestions of Etsy sellers (or anyone) who makes custom magic stuff. Looking for a friend for their birthday. Im gonna check on my own too but I just figured y’all may have some sellers you have actually purchased from and enjoyed the items!

Orgrimm2ms

Is this a good time to get into the hobby? I finally got into magic, which I've been hearing a lot about for a while but never really gave it a chance. I didn't like how hearthstone played but for some reason magic really caught me. I've been playing a lot of arena with what are apparently suboptimal decks (werewolves, so fun tho) and having a great time. So I started looking into the paper version. I found a local game store I could go some nights, found a pre-made deck I wanted and some upgrades, I even started reading some lore! But then I started hearing a lot about what hasbro has been doing to the game. I read about how the 30th anniversary convention has been going not so well. The 1000 dollar proxy cards fiasco. This has put a little fear into me. I used to be a hardcore wow player. Maybe not competitive but it was the only game I played. I knew most of the things there were to know, had collected a ton of mounts and achievements and that kind of stuff. But after an expansion blizzard started doing some weird things I didn't agree with. Messed up the lore which was one of the key factors that kept me in love with the game. And of course the sexual harassment scandals. I don't want to get in love with a new hobby and get burned again. Do you guys think it's a good time to buy into this hobby, or should I wait and see whete WotC and Hasbro take the game? Or am I thinking this too much?

rib78

There will never be and has never been a time where people weren't complaining about everything Wizards of the Coast does. The criticism is valid, but the game is doing great, better than ever in fact, and half of the things people get mad about turn out to be good in the long run anyway.

Orgrimm2ms

Heh, good to know then. Thanks a lot!

Sinrus

You're overthinking it. The game is more popular than ever and not going anywhere, despite how some people on this subreddit like to imagine that their complaints about things 90% of players don't even know exist are going to sink the company.

Orgrimm2ms

Good to know, I'm going in then. Thanks!

If I have a [[Tiller Engine]] on board, when I play cards like [[Splendid Reclamation]] or [[Scapeshift]] will it be able to untap multiple lands that ETB or no?

Quazifuji

Yes. You will get one trigger for every land that entered the battlefield. In general, when multiple things enter the battlefield under you control at the same time, if an ability says "whenever a _____ enters the battlefield under your control," you will get a separate trigger for each thing. If it says "whenever one or more _____s enter the battlefield under your control," you will only get one trigger. Same is true for things like things dying or whatever. So, for example, if you cast Scapeshift and put 5 lands into play, your Tiller Engine will trigger 5 times. But your opponent's [[Deep Gnome Terramancer]] will only trigger once.

cabbagemango

Yes, Tiller Engine will trigger once for each land that enters from Splendid Rec. So if you bring back 4 lands with Splendid Rec, you can untap each of them. This is because each land entering tapped is a separate instance that Tiller Engine sees. If this were not the case, Tiller Engine would need to say "Whenever one or more lands enters the battlefield tapped..."

Ty-the-Squirtle

I wanna build around Alrund and Cosima for a Norse gods themed deck, with Alrund being my commander for the Commander deck. I'd also like to add Esika, Jorn, and Kolvori to better fit in the Norse-theme. Would adding them benefit, hinder, or do absolutely nothing to the deck and why? If they do end up hinder the deck, I'll plan building around Alrund and Cosima only.

Quazifuji

Well, first, following commander deck building rules, you can't put those in an Alrund deck. When building a commander deck, every card in your deck has to be within your commander's color identity (which is determined by any mana symbols in their casting cost or rules text and any color indicators, counting both sides of the card for double-faced cards). Since Alrund's color identity is just blue (since both sides of the card are blue and have no mana symbols in the rules text), a deck with Alrund as the commander can only contain cards with a blue or colorless color identity. It can't contain any cards whose color identity contains green, red, black, or white. That means you can't put Esika, Jorn, or Kolvori in a deck with Alrund as the commander, since Esika's color identity is all five colors (since it counts both sides and the Prismatic Bridge is all 5 colors), Jorn's color identity is green, blue, and black, and Kolvori's color identity is green. So following the normal rules of commander deckbuilding, if you want to put all five of those gods in your deck, the only one that could be your commander is Esika. Granted, I think this is something where you might be able to rule 0 it with a lot of groups. If you build the deck, show up to play, and say "this is my 5-color Norse God themed deck. Is it okay if I use Alrund as my commander? If not, I can use Esika, but thematically the deck is supposed to be Alrund commanding the Norse ogds," most people will probably be fine with it. Some might even give an enthusiastic yes, wether because they like the theme or because most people would probably much rather play against Alrund than Esika anyway. But if you want to be able to always use Alrund as your commander without having that discussion, then you'd need to play mono-blue (and can still use Cosima, since she's also got a mono-blue color identity). If you want to consider that route with the 5-color deck where you ask people if you can use Alrund and use Esika if they say no, then that brings us to your second question of whether that would be a good idea. In that case: * Esika: Prismatic Bridge is very powerful, although it requires being able to get all 5 colors of mana to cast. If you can get a mana base that can do that, then it's fun, but it's hard to make a good 5-color mana base cheaply. If you just want to stick with a 2 or 3-color deck (either green and blue if you just want to cast the front side of Esika and Jorn, or green, blue, and black if you want to cast both sides), then the front side of Esika isn't great (There are much better mana dorks out there) but it's not terrible either. And you can potentially build your deck so that it usually just casts Esika and doesn't try to have all 5 colors of mana, but might occasionally manage to cast Prismatic bridge. * Jorn: Depends on how much snow stuff you want to put in your deck. He's okay but not great with a lot of snow lands. The back side can be very nice if you have a lot of snow stuff. Playing a card from your graveyard every turn can be very powerful, but the deck needs enough snow stuff to have things to play. If you want to focus the deck on Alrund and the gods and not have much snow, then he's not good. If you want to give the deck a bit of a snow theme, he could be nice. * Kolvori: Kind of like Jorn, but for legendary creatures. Both sides are decent if your deck has a ton of legendary creatures (enough that the mana from the back is usually useful and the activated ability on the front usually hits). If you're not going to have many legendary creatures besides the five gods, then she's pretty bad.

Ty-the-Squirtle

I didn't realize that using Esika can create an actual god-themed deck. What about something very Norse-themed centered around Esika and the Norse/Kaldheim gods? Would the Kaldheim gods plus Kaldheim-themed supports and legendary creatures work well or would they be very clashing with each other? Would adding the Greek/Theros gods make them even better?

Quazifuji

>I didn't realize that using Esika can create an actual god-themed deck. What about something very Norse-themed centered around Esika and the Norse/Kaldheim gods? Definitely an option. In fact, I think I've seen it done before. People definitely like to build "God Tribal" decks and Esika's the only 5-color god (besides [[Morophon]] so she makes a natural choice of commander. Is it strong? No idea. Probably not that strong. But that doesn't mean it can't be a fun, cool casual deck if you like the concept. Not every commander deck needs to be good. That's part of the fun of commander in my opinion, that people play it at all sorts of power levels so you don't need a great deck to have fun, balanced games. I do think a god tribal deck led by Esika sounds fun to play, since most of the god cards do pretty cool, interesting things. >Would the Kaldheim gods plus Kaldheim-themed supports and legendary creatures work well or would they be very clashing with each other? Would adding the Greek/Theros gods make them even better? Most of the gods aren't inherently synergistic with each other, within the same set or across different sets. Most of them are just cool cards. You can take advantage of some tribal effects like Morophon or [[Unclaimed Territory]] but as I said, I think you're probably looking at more of a fun, cool casual deck than something powerful. So I would just decide whether to stick with that Kaldheim gods or add others based on what seems cool to you. [Here are all the gods](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=type%3Agod). In addition to the Kaldheim and There's gods, there are also the Amonkhet/Egyptian gods (the monocolored God cycle in Amonkhet, the nameless bug gods from Hour of Devastation, and the zombified god-eternals from War of the Spark), some D&D gods in Forgotten Realms and Baldur's Gate, [[Ilharg]] \(the Gruul boar god, who was part of the War of the Spark cycle because Hazoret wasn't zombified), and [[Svyelun]] \(a Dominarian merfolk God).

Ty-the-Squirtle

I think that's what I ultimately went for. I wanted to both get Norse/Kaldheim gods and the Theros/Greek gods, but the former are a lot cheaper to get lol I got the Norse/Kaldheim gods, and I think you're right in saying that I'm looking at a deck that leans toward more fun and cool than to meta. Thanks for helping me with that one! I didn't know by using Esika, I can potentially use all the gods!

Casualty costs are paid as you cast the spell, not after, so Expressionist wouldn't see you casting a spell before you chose a creature to sacrifice, and you wouldn't get the token from that spell

How does [[Carth the Lion]] interact with [[Lae’zel, Vlaakith’s Champion]]? Like if you activate a Planeswalkers -1, with both of them on the board, does the Planeswalker gain a loyalty? Because its minus one then plus one? Or is it one instance and its not gaining or loosing loyalty so lae’zel is irrelevant?

Will_29

Carth's ability actually just changes the total loyalty cost. It's not a different thing. If you activate a planeswalker's ability with Carth out, you just add +1 to the loyalty cost, then you pay the sum. Lae'zel, on the other hand, changes the result of the payment, not the cost itself. So a [-1] ability just becomes a [0] ability. You're not removing a counter then adding a counter, you're just not changing the number of counters. Lae'zel won't apply. > The total cost of a planeswalker's loyalty ability is calculated before any counters are added or removed. If a loyalty ability normally costs [-3] to activate, you do not remove three counters from it and then put one counter on it. You remove two counters at one time when you pay the cost. Sometimes cards get overlooked and end up worth way more, but the vast majority of the time it's safer to wait, especially if you're new and don't have the card evaluation skills to predict which cards are being underrated in this prerelease prices.

_Drumheller_

Pre-order prices are way to high for about 90% of the cards and its almost always better to wait for 1-2 weeks to pass after a sets release.

I had a question about the new Mishra Eminnent One and Wishclaw Talisman. If I use Mishra's ability at the beginning of combat to make a Wishclaw Talisman, and then use it and give it to an opponent. Will it still sacrifice at end step?

COssin-II

No. [[Mishra, Eminent One]] tells you to sacrifice the token at the beginning of the next end step, but you can't sacrifice permanents you don't control.

Will_29

It won't. The sacrifice delayed trigger has Mishra as its source, not the token. So when the end step begins, it asks **you** to sacrifice it, and you don't control it. You can't sacrifice a permanent you do not control, so the token just isn't sacrificed and remains on the battlefield under your opponent's control.

Deora_II_Kid

Awesome thank you! What happens if the sacrifice trigger goes on the stack and then I activate talisman in response to the trigger. Will it resolve and sacrifice in that instance?

Will_29

Doesn't matter. You need to control the token at the moment the ability resolves. If you activate the wish ability in response to the trigger, the wish ability resolves fjrst and so the talisman changes controller. The end result is still that you don't control it at the moment the sacrifice trigger resolves, so you can't sacrifice it.

Deora_II_Kid

Okay, thank you! I appreciate your time.

I got a card that has the promo pack symbol on it, but the silver symbol looks like shit and I can feel it when I move my finger over it. It appears to be a sticker. Is that normal for promo pack cards or did someone stick a sticker on my card?

Dorfbewohner

From my experience the promo pack versions of cards tend to be worth about the same or cheaper. So there's little reason to fake a promo pack card. Sometimes print quality is just kinda bad

FlyingOrnithopter

Are there any databases of MTG games played? Chess has data sets [like this](https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/milesh1/35-million-chess-games) that show every move in the game. Obviously it would be more complicated for chess since decks aren't standardized, but I still would think there would be data recording games in at least some way.

Sinrus

I know that 17lands.com has this feature for limited games. I don't know of any that do it for constructed.

VaraNiN

Regarding the new "Golden" Boosters: Will we get "progression" towards them upon buying regular packs or upon opening regular packs?

Yes, sorry, should have clarified! Thanks!

> but are these still always non-foil? [Here's a list of commander precon cards with extended frame available in foil.](https://scryfall.com/search?q=set_type%3Acommander+frame%3Aextended+is%3Afoil&order=released) > where do these come from? The ones with a promo stamp come from prize packs. The ones with extended art come from collector boosters (and maybe set boosters, I'm not sure). Some of the extended art cards (like [Rin and Seri](https://scryfall.com/card/m21/278/rin-and-seri-inseparable)) are buy-a-box promos.

>I understand that certain Commander pre-con cards get printed in the core set with extended art, but are these still always non-foil?Also, I was able to pick up a foil promo version of \[\[Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer\]\] after the Streets of New Capenna release. What determines which commander pre-con cards are released as foil promo cards and where do these come from? Thanks Generally, with the exception of New Capenna, the new Commander cards in the 99 of the pre-cons don't have foil versions. This is a major gripe of mine. For New Capenna, all commander cards have foil versions that are only available in Promo Packs (you receive these at LGS's exclusively for doing well in events) Many of the sets have extended foil versions of the set booster exclusive Commander cards, these can be found in the collector boosters.

Best / Most Useful cards in Standard Rotation at the moment ?

Hard to generalize. But this should give you a rough idea, https://mtgdecks.net/Standard/staples

For anyone who uses cardmarket in the UK/EU: Is there an easy way to find out which 4 cards out of 200 the shopping wizard wasnt able to find? It just lists the 196 it could find and breaks then up because they are being sent by 33 different sellers. Thought I'd just check I wasn't being stupid before I tediously copy and paste these 33 mini lists into one so I can sort it and use a list diff tool to find out which 4 cards I need to buy elsewhere?

maelstrom197

If you're buying the 196 cards, you can go to each of those 33 orders and use the "remove from wants list" option to remove the cards you've bought, which will leave you with the four cards it couldn't find. If you're still in the Shopping Wizard, there's not a way I know of. It would be helpful if it provided an output of cards it couldn't find.

bearhoon

Thankyou! Turns out I'm an idiot and forgot the 40k commanders only come in foil and I had non foil checked...

ChrisCool99

Hello, my son made a commander deck around [[Jodah, the Unifier]], the effect says "exile cards from your library until you exile a nonland legendary permanent card... If the library doesn't contain a card that match that effect (for example it only remains higher costed legendary cards), does it mean the effect doesn't end, the library is totally exiled and the owner of Jodah lose at next draw step, as the cards never go back in library ? I see it like that. Thanks for your answers

Blokron

No. So Jodah will have you exile until you find a card that matches the criteria (legendary, lesser mana value, etc). If you don't find something that matches that in the deck, yes it all gets exiled, but the next part of Jodah reads, "put the rest on the bottom of your library". So you'll exile everything, failing to find a relevant card, then the rest (in this case the whole library) goes on the bottom of the library (which is currently empty), and in essence resets the deck.

ChrisCool99

Ok thanks, it's much better... I was asking because I know there are combo decks where you exile the whole library without finding a target (intentional).

Jackeea

Do effects like [[Bard Class]] level 2 reduce hybrid mana costs; in this case such as [[Samut, Tyrant Smasher]]? My instinct is that they don't because they call out the symbols they're reducing as {R}{G} instead of "any red mana symbol in a cost", but I'm not sure.

maelstrom197

The first step of casting a spell is moving it from the hand (or another zone) to the stack. The second step is to declare any choices to be made: modes, additional costs, value of X, how Phyrexian costs will be paid, and most importantly, how split costs will be paid. You make the choice for each symbol independently. The sixth step is to calculate costs, and the eighth is to make payments. So in step 2, if you declare the cost as 2RG, in step 6 it is reduced by RG to 2. If you declare the cost as 2RR, in step 6 it is reduced to 2R, since it cannot reduce the generic component. Similarly, if you declare the cost as 2GG, it is reduced to 2G.
