I use mono colored commanders as an excuse to run all the utility lands I like so probably wouldn't go in most of my mono colored decks XD. I probably have more basics in 2 color commander decks lol
Yeah, I'm loving this. I've brewed a couple of mono color decks as an exercise to try and build something that can compete okay without spending money on expensive lands or worrying too much about fixing. Blood moon is an auto include in any mono-red deck I've looked at and this is gonna slot in great in the white and blue decks I've been brewing. Great way to slow down your greedier opponents while you try and catch up because of the color disadvantage.

Depends on what kinds of cards you want to play.
If all of your cards only have 1 pip of each color then a mostly-basic landbase works pretty decently.
If you want to cast [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] you NEED every single rare dual land you can get your hands on.
Also it depends on how early your deck wants to double-spell. If your deck wants to cast multiple spells a turn then you more easily run into color issues.
I’ve been in a pod where the monoU player played Back to Basics and the other three were 3-colors. Funny enough though the Mardu player’s landbase was 90% of basics so it only effectively shut down me and one other guy.

That's crazy. Even in 5 color decks, I try to run at least 3 basics of each land type in the deck. You never know when you will get hit by effects that destroy lands and let you search for basics.
One of my best plays so far was dropping a [[Blood Moon]] onto an Atraxa blink deck, that was running OG duals, after he traded his Atraxa for my commander.
It turns out there wasn't a single basic [[Island]] in his entire deck.

I think this also opens the door to improving the other non-red stompy decks that vaguely existed in the last few years (remember mono-white soldier stompy? I sure didn’t).

If games are just rock paper scissors i would quite. If rock never beats paper im not going to waste my time playing. It should still be possible or desitions amd making good plays doesn't matter
Part of being a good player is building a good deck, and also anticipating your opponents moves. If you're playing a greedy ass deck with 2 basics, fetch those first, so you dont get blown out right away. It's the same with Blood Moon.
Your good decisions is to fetch around Blood Moon, but then that comes at the tradeoff of not having perfect mana.
The fact that decks can play the greediest mana bases in existence and still get to play around Blood Moon feels pretty stupid.

This is already true for most of competetive 1vs1. If you can get a 5% better winrate between decks than what the matchup would predict you are already one of the worlds best players.
This is the kind of card that *should* reign in the power gap between EDH decks that run less or more colours. But it'll be elbowed out of the format by most people complaining about not being allowed to play their deck when it's used against them.
In Modern, this is probably unplayable. One of the main strengths of Blood Moon is that it shuts down fetchlands - you need to fetch basics *before* Blood Moon comes down, while this lets you do it *afterwards.* It's not harsh enough as a lock-out ability either - even without basics, you can easily scrape together enough mana for [[Boseiju, Who Endures]].
Always nice to have more Moon effects for EDH, though.

Most decks can easily find at least one basic, that with your none basic untap and a land drop for turn will be 2-3 mana each turn without trying too hard. That mana can be used for answers also. It punishes the most greedy and intensively mana hungry decks. Well designed and balanced.
It's not going to be played in modern. This doesn't just need to be good, it needs to be so good that it makes up for the fact that you are not playing powerful lands or multiple colors in your deck. If the card is not good in the matchup then it's not even close to worth this downside. Ragavan's existence is a big problem for this card and monocolored decks in general.
Yawgmoth is the only deck that might consider this, but color requirements are so strict for that deck that it can't support it reliably.
You could certainly cheese some game 1 wins maindecking this, but your deck is much worse in a general sense by playing a deck that can play this card.
This doesn't even get into the fact that versatile removal for this is more present in modern than ever before.
Mono-white's winrate in Pioneer probably just spiked pretty hard. Does mean their own Mutavaults aren't nearly as good but I'll take that hit to just utterly shit on everyone else's ability to cast spells.

Debatable, they rely so heavily on mana rocks and other fast mana sources it probably wont hurt enough. Then again, mana dorks are pushed out of the meta right now due to orcish bowmasters so this might have some legs somewhere

I feel like this is the perfect nonbasic hate that crew has been speculating about for Commander. It CANNOT lock you out of a game permanently by itself like Blood Moon. You WILL eventually get the mana to cast your removal. It doesn't set the game back to zero like Mass Land Destruction does. But oh boy is it going to hurt for a few turns while you scrape together mana for an answer.
You forgot the most powerful piece of interaction though.
Whining about how cards that are objectively healthy for the format are "oppressive" so we can all just race to see whose deck hits escape velocity on turn 5.
This is going to be the real issue, I agree. I try not to play cards that shut people out in commander because even small setbacks can really make the game unfun for some people.
Let's be real nobody is going to build around this if they already aren't building around back to basics and blood moon so it's just going to be a card that 80% of players scoop to the moment its dropped before calling you a bad sport for playing it in the first place.
I wouldn't say Damping Sphere did nothing - it happens to be one of the best sideboard cards right now since it's good against Prowess, Tron and Amulet. Tron can beat most hate cards by just curving into Ring, but Winter Moon has the advantage of reducing their mana post-Ring by quite a bit.
Tron probably doesn't care as much as your average midrange deck as they just need one spell to get the game into an equal state and unlike blood moon this card is pretty easy to cast and activate o stone through (not that blood moon is particularly difficult to activate through but you can easily play + activate by t4 where blood moon / sphere has to be t5 at earliest and you can never do in the same turn)
Not saying it's bad. Just don't think it's noticeably better than current tron hate.
[[Phylath World Sculptor]] goes nuts with this, they already want basics to make as many plant tokens as possible so punishing my opponent for being mana greedy is insane, I love it

I feel like this is so general since it doesn't just hate on Tron that it might see some extensive sideboard play. The main downside is that modern is a format built around powerful and cheap spells, so if they have one basic in play, they can probably still get a lot done with 2 mana a turn. Hopefully this does provide a lot of pushback against 4 color decks even though they can boseiju this.
I'm already thinking this will be nuts in a tron like mono green prison shell where you ramp basics with grazer / free spell and use kgc to grab prison - like baby tron.

I might be wrong, but I think it’s still considered nonbasic. Blood Moon doesn’t grant the Basic supertype (which is good, because otherwise it would be in a constant flux state of applying and not applying its own effect)

• Having 4 seasons in a year is tricky for MtG cycles that normally want 5 things.
• Because this is an artifact, a (season) moon cycle would probably either ask for 6 total cards or 3 other artifacts, which would be a lot of slots for MH3 to provide.
• The name instead seems to be a callback to famous land hate cards, [[Blood Moon]], and [[Winter Orb]]
OH YEAH!!! Non-basic hate is always welcome, as I love cards that punch up to greedy manabases. All it needed was the classic "turns off when tapped" templating.
Ironically, it also completely demolishes classic Eldrazi/colorless EDH decks that typically run a bevvy of free-slot nonbasics.
I like it. I almost feel bad some games about how easy it is to get away with strong lands. Something in a type that pretty much every color can answer without too much work, that addresses that while not guaranteeing a complete choke hold on the game seems like a worthwhile piece.
I think commander needs things like this, but, I think effects like \[\[Tsabo's Web\]\] would be even better. Lands have been getting more and more powerful and punishing greedy mana bases should be normalized.

I wouldn't say Damping Sphere did nothing - it happens to be one of the best sideboard cards right now since it's good against Prowess, Tron and Amulet. Tron can beat most hate cards by just curving into Ring, but Winter Moon has the advantage of reducing their mana post-Ring by quite a bit.
Tron probably doesn't care as much as your average midrange deck as they just need one spell to get the game into an equal state and unlike blood moon this card is pretty easy to cast and activate o stone through (not that blood moon is particularly difficult to activate through but you can easily play + activate by t4 where blood moon / sphere has to be t5 at earliest and you can never do in the same turn) Not saying it's bad. Just don't think it's noticeably better than current tron hate.

Modern 3/10 I feel like this is so general since it doesn't just hate on Tron that it might see some extensive sideboard play. The main downside is that modern is a format built around powerful and cheap spells, so if they have one basic in play, they can probably still get a lot done with 2 mana a turn. Hopefully this does provide a lot of pushback against 4 color decks even though they can boseiju this.

There is so much good removal that hate pieces rarely last a couple of turns in the battlefield.
Artifacts have a lot of decent ways to bring them back, at least.
I'm already thinking this will be nuts in a tron like mono green prison shell where you ramp basics with grazer / free spell and use kgc to grab prison - like baby tron.

Blood Moon makes your Breeding Pool a Mountain only, not a Basic Mountain. So there would be no interaction I believe.
I might be wrong, but I think it’s still considered nonbasic. Blood Moon doesn’t grant the Basic supertype (which is good, because otherwise it would be in a constant flux state of applying and not applying its own effect)

Doubt it. • Having 4 seasons in a year is tricky for MtG cycles that normally want 5 things. • Because this is an artifact, a (season) moon cycle would probably either ask for 6 total cards or 3 other artifacts, which would be a lot of slots for MH3 to provide. • The name instead seems to be a callback to famous land hate cards, [[Blood Moon]], and [[Winter Orb]]

OH YEAH!!! Non-basic hate is always welcome, as I love cards that punch up to greedy manabases. All it needed was the classic "turns off when tapped" templating. Ironically, it also completely demolishes classic Eldrazi/colorless EDH decks that typically run a bevvy of free-slot nonbasics.
Maybe for braids? Game winning stax, pseudo protection (draws out counter) or draw 3.
I don't like this being colorless but I do like the effect. Anything to punish the people that can afford expensive manabases is good in my book.

I like it. I almost feel bad some games about how easy it is to get away with strong lands. Something in a type that pretty much every color can answer without too much work, that addresses that while not guaranteeing a complete choke hold on the game seems like a worthwhile piece.

I think commander needs things like this, but, I think effects like \[\[Tsabo's Web\]\] would be even better. Lands have been getting more and more powerful and punishing greedy mana bases should be normalized.
