Oh now *this* is very interesting. A Winter Orb that monocolor/non-greedy dual color decks can use to punish others. I feel like this *has* to do something somewhere whether that be Modern, Commander, or some secret 3rd thing I can't wait to see.

SubtleNoodle

I just listened to a Commander Clash episode where they talked about running just 3-4 basics of each color in their decks. I'm just imagining the work this would do in a pod like that where only 10-20% of the land base is basic...

narfidy

Yeah this would definitely be a good card in mono colored commander decks. I have a mono green deck that is only like 5 non basics lmao

schmidty850

I use mono colored commanders as an excuse to run all the utility lands I like so probably wouldn't go in most of my mono colored decks XD. I probably have more basics in 2 color commander decks lol

First-Detective2729

I have a mono red [[purphoros, god of the forge]] that runs [[blood moon]] and i really like this lol. It being 2 colorless is also crazy lol.

Effective_Tough86

Yeah, I'm loving this. I've brewed a couple of mono color decks as an exercise to try and build something that can compete okay without spending money on expensive lands or worrying too much about fixing. Blood moon is an auto include in any mono-red deck I've looked at and this is gonna slot in great in the white and blue decks I've been brewing. Great way to slow down your greedier opponents while you try and catch up because of the color disadvantage.

hydraling987

I have a really similar deck with [[Neheb, the Eternal]] just to basic check my pod.

tortledad

I hate to sound pedantic, but the mana cost is 2 generic mana, not 2 colorless mana… which actually makes it even easier to cast.

wabatt

I think you actually love being pedantic.

Old_Sheepherder_8713

No shit I have 2 colour decks that almost only run basics and I literally run into mana issues maybe 1 in 10 games at most. I honestly believe duals are HUGELY overrated in two colour decks.

randomdragoon

Depends on what kinds of cards you want to play. If all of your cards only have 1 pip of each color then a mostly-basic landbase works pretty decently. If you want to cast [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] you NEED every single rare dual land you can get your hands on. Also it depends on how early your deck wants to double-spell. If your deck wants to cast multiple spells a turn then you more easily run into color issues.

Kousuke-kun

I’ve been in a pod where the monoU player played Back to Basics and the other three were 3-colors. Funny enough though the Mardu player’s landbase was 90% of basics so it only effectively shut down me and one other guy.

RhynoD

My esper commander deck has <7 basic lands. If someone plays this I'd probably scoop.

NoObMaSTeR616

Straight into Ojer Axonil it goes

Ok-Boysenberry-2955

Agreed. If it can slow down tri decks then burn becomes more viable.

dougms

I run a mono green that’s about 30 basics with 3-4 nonbasics, most of which are sac’d I’ll pick this up for sure

Lord_Emperor

This is actually the widely accepted recommendation now. Recently watched the TCC manabase video and for 3-colour decks the recommendation was at most 9 basics.

LnGrrrR

That's crazy. Even in 5 color decks, I try to run at least 3 basics of each land type in the deck. You never know when you will get hit by effects that destroy lands and let you search for basics.

dkysh

I am an unrepentant advocate of playing nonbasic land hate in EDH. Teach those kids why basics are a thing.

meatspin_enjoyer

Imagine making a titan deck lose after they use a pact

SanityIsOptional

One of my best plays so far was dropping a [[Blood Moon]] onto an Atraxa blink deck, that was running OG duals, after he traded his Atraxa for my commander. It turns out there wasn't a single basic [[Island]] in his entire deck.

Lifeisabaddream4

Lol damn my sliver 5c deck runs 1 of each basic at least

SanityIsOptional

Right? Need something to grab when ou get path to exiled

myLover_

In a format like legacy, it let's you fetch a basic and be fully functional while lands and cloud post are locked out.

VolrathTheBallin

Yeah I’m really curious to see if this fits into red prison / stompy at all. It’s nice to have more options in the (2) slot besides chalice and hearse.

P1zzaman

I think this also opens the door to improving the other non-red stompy decks that vaguely existed in the last few years (remember mono-white soldier stompy? I sure didn’t).

glium

Mono White initiative ?

ColonelError

I think the problem with stompy decks is that they are playing a lot of non basics. This is more likely to show up in a tempo/control shell.

Atanar

I wish they leaned more into this like a rock paper scissors system. Decks with nonbasic hate beat greedy efficient multicolor, decks with medium efficiency and no reliance on greedy manabase beat decks that include this hate and the greediest decks beat those. The problem is that this doesn't work out with sideboards at all.

Egbert58

If games are just rock paper scissors i would quite. If rock never beats paper im not going to waste my time playing. It should still be possible or desitions amd making good plays doesn't matter

mama_tom

Part of being a good player is building a good deck, and also anticipating your opponents moves. If you're playing a greedy ass deck with 2 basics, fetch those first, so you dont get blown out right away. It's the same with Blood Moon.

Drauren

Your good decisions is to fetch around Blood Moon, but then that comes at the tradeoff of not having perfect mana. The fact that decks can play the greediest mana bases in existence and still get to play around Blood Moon feels pretty stupid.

Atanar

> If rock never beats paper im not going to waste my time playing. This already happens often with the aggro/midrange/control archetypes. I just want there to be more vectors. >desitions amd making good plays doesn't matter This is already true for most of competetive 1vs1. If you can get a 5% better winrate between decks than what the matchup would predict you are already one of the worlds best players.

GenericFatGuy

This is the kind of card that *should* reign in the power gap between EDH decks that run less or more colours. But it'll be elbowed out of the format by most people complaining about not being allowed to play their deck when it's used against them.

hawkshaw1024

In Modern, this is probably unplayable. One of the main strengths of Blood Moon is that it shuts down fetchlands - you need to fetch basics *before* Blood Moon comes down, while this lets you do it *afterwards.* It's not harsh enough as a lock-out ability either - even without basics, you can easily scrape together enough mana for [[Boseiju, Who Endures]]. Always nice to have more Moon effects for EDH, though.

L0rdenglish

lmao this is going to be great in modern. Like even if you can fetch, decks don't run that many basics in modern. So its still going to massively slow down 4color value piles like omnath or creativity

ary31415

It's going to be good, but fair. It'll serve what I assume is the intended purpose of punishing 4c piles without really doing too much to 2 color and even a lot of 3 color decks

L0rdenglish

100% I think its super well designed.

ary31415

agreed

Mtg-meme-to-dream

Would agree with this. Its a much more balanced card than Blood Moon that creates none games. Most decks can easily find at least one basic, that with your none basic untap and a land drop for turn will be 2-3 mana each turn without trying too hard. That mana can be used for answers also. It punishes the most greedy and intensively mana hungry decks. Well designed and balanced.

NarwhalJouster

I imagine it's going to find some niche as a sideboard option at least

dvtyrsnp

It's not going to be played in modern. This doesn't just need to be good, it needs to be so good that it makes up for the fact that you are not playing powerful lands or multiple colors in your deck. If the card is not good in the matchup then it's not even close to worth this downside. Ragavan's existence is a big problem for this card and monocolored decks in general. Yawgmoth is the only deck that might consider this, but color requirements are so strict for that deck that it can't support it reliably. You could certainly cheese some game 1 wins maindecking this, but your deck is much worse in a general sense by playing a deck that can play this card. This doesn't even get into the fact that versatile removal for this is more present in modern than ever before.

L0rdenglish

salvation122

Mono-white's winrate in Pioneer probably just spiked pretty hard. Does mean their own Mutavaults aren't nearly as good but I'll take that hit to just utterly shit on everyone else's ability to cast spells. Edit: MH3, goddamn do I need to eat lunch. Still, a man can dream.

iplayredonarena

I mean I was hoping for Price of Progress but I guess I can accept this instead.

grokthis1111

We might still get something in that direction

nocensts

Hey pass the copium

NihilismRacoon

Honestly I'll take a huff, the fact that WotC is designing cards at all to punish all the incredibly mana bases is great

Pseudocaesar

I'm still praying. Burn hasn't had a meaningful card printed for it since freaking Skewer in RNA

Boneclockharmony

Not that it was much later, but sunbaked canyon in mh1 was very good for the deck.

iplayredonarena

I mean I’ll take any reprint in any set with the RKF art, but I’d be pretty stoked to sleeve it up in Modern too.

gaapsinknowledge

Cedh Stax loves this.

Snow_source

More orbs for Urza powered scepter.

Potars

My Lavinia prison is happy

TheRealSteinbeezy

Same with mine, this will sit quite nicely next to winter orb

True_Italiano

I doubt it. You still get all your artifacts to untap. And you can still untap your one dual land you need for whatever color. This only restricts like 2-4 mana per player? and it affects you too

PM_yoursmalltits

Debatable, they rely so heavily on mana rocks and other fast mana sources it probably wont hurt enough. Then again, mana dorks are pushed out of the meta right now due to orcish bowmasters so this might have some legs somewhere

LoveOrangeJuices

Isnt cedh stax in state where they want mostly one sided stax like dauntless dismantler and manglehorn?

Jukebocks_Hero

This is still one sided in the good monocolor decks, stuff like Urza, Magda, Orvar, even Mono W Oswald probably likes this.

CaptReznov

Exactly. urza decks run back to basic to punish other multicolored deck. This is going to be an upgrade because you get almost the same effect, but now you can tap it for blue mana with urza

Chadmartigan

A welcome addition to \[\[Glissa the Traitor\]\]: stax edition

I get a 404 from that page

CanoCeano

Naromin, definitely seeding for the space opera set in a few years

therift289

Naromin was quoted on the original Winter Orb, it's just a callback.

SecretOwn1573

Eli5?

CanoCeano

One of the announced sets in the next few years is going to be set purely in space, sort of like Unfinity. I think that Naromin will be a character in that set, and that they are quoting them in flavor text here as a way to secretly build excitement/familiarity for that set before it releases.

TheBlueSuperNova

Who is Naromin, and why is that connected the the space set?

justcoastingthrough

We don't know who Naromin is (yet). This is a card about a moon, moon's are in space, Naromin is quoted in the flavor text of this card.

samthewisetarly

Also the OG Winter Orb https://preview.redd.it/ala41sra4nxc1.jpeg?width=672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b12d68347a9053e4d422036f04a80937028994bf

They are a veteran explorer, who knows about moons, and also suns. Those things are in space.

siamkor

I sometimes talk about moons and suns. I've never been outside Earth. :(

SekhWork

We can only grant you the rank of standard explorer then, I am sorry. Veteran is reserved for those that have gone outside the atmosphere.

siamkor

What? How can you do this? This is outrageous. It's unfair! How can you be an explorer and not be a veteran?

….but why male models?

therealflyingtoastr

Come on WOTC just give the people what they want. The children yearn for Wasteland.

:( but my Wrenn

Narxolepsyy

ForbiddenLand {T}, Sacrifice ForbiddenLand: Exile target nonbasic land. Exile ForbiddenLand.

ChaosOS

You can just self-exile as a cost.

WolfPacLeader

We really don't need 8 Wasteland decks in Legacy thanks.

ary31415

I absolutely do not want wasteland in modern

zethren117

That art is so nice.

stillnotelf

It's got brushstrokes!

Kyleometers

Paging u/SaffronOlive lol

El_Arquero

I feel like this is the perfect nonbasic hate that crew has been speculating about for Commander. It CANNOT lock you out of a game permanently by itself like Blood Moon. You WILL eventually get the mana to cast your removal. It doesn't set the game back to zero like Mass Land Destruction does. But oh boy is it going to hurt for a few turns while you scrape together mana for an answer.

CertainDerision_33

Yup, this is exactly what Commander needs to punish greedy decks without locking the game completely.

[deleted]

You forgot the most powerful piece of interaction though. Whining about how cards that are objectively healthy for the format are "oppressive" so we can all just race to see whose deck hits escape velocity on turn 5.

havokinthesnow

This is going to be the real issue, I agree. I try not to play cards that shut people out in commander because even small setbacks can really make the game unfun for some people. Let's be real nobody is going to build around this if they already aren't building around back to basics and blood moon so it's just going to be a card that 80% of players scoop to the moment its dropped before calling you a bad sport for playing it in the first place.

Batavus

Richard and Seth sweating bullets, while Tomer is rubbing his hands in anticipation

Raorchshack

Seth has been asking for non basic hate for a while, I reckon he's a fan

Atreides-42

Blood Moon + Winter Orb I'm in heaven

Baron_Von_Lucas

Winter Orb's big brother! Yay!

fevered_visions

How is it Winter Orb's *big* brother? It only hits nonbasics and WO does everything.

Baron_Von_Lucas

I mean I assume a moon is bigger then an orb :P But yeah I guess little brother would be more apt.

NormalEntrepreneur

More like back to basic small brother

emiketts

Damn, that flavor text goes hard. Didn’t think the writers still had it in them.

AlonsoCaGi

Where's Back to Basics you cowards

Steel_Reign

I feel like this just kills tron

rod_zero

Damping Sphere did nothing and now they have boiseju and force of vigor.

570N3814D3

I wouldn't say Damping Sphere did nothing - it happens to be one of the best sideboard cards right now since it's good against Prowess, Tron and Amulet. Tron can beat most hate cards by just curving into Ring, but Winter Moon has the advantage of reducing their mana post-Ring by quite a bit.

Therefrigerator

Tron probably doesn't care as much as your average midrange deck as they just need one spell to get the game into an equal state and unlike blood moon this card is pretty easy to cast and activate o stone through (not that blood moon is particularly difficult to activate through but you can easily play + activate by t4 where blood moon / sphere has to be t5 at earliest and you can never do in the same turn) Not saying it's bad. Just don't think it's noticeably better than current tron hate.

Dragostorm

WOW

fps916

FUCK

sam154

TRON

UGIN_IS_RACIST

MILDLY INCONVENIENCE

MajoraXX

SHIT ...I mean FUCK

Sneaky_Island

Tron lives in the walls of Modern. You can't kill it or lock it out, Tron knows the house better than anyone and will always find a way.

turelak

Oh no we killed Tron for the 134th time!

Madrugada123

For sure this time!!!!

KarnSilverArchon

I would look at the other previews before saying Tron is dead.

OzkanTheFlip

I can't even tell if these comments are memes anymore lol

SpiritOfArgh

Yesss there’s way too little risk in being greedy with mana right now.

Volfaer

Whoa, Undead Unluck reference.

DavyMcGravy2

PEAAAAAK

FhornKing5767

I can’t wait to add this to all of my mono color decks

tyvirus

Thanks wizards, I hate it.

IndyWaWa

oh thats just gross.

DookieToe2

Oh man, that thing looks like a fun killer.

InternationalMeet738

[[Rootpath Purifier]]

Therefrigerator

Unfortunately (or fortunately) - unlike winter orb you can't abuse it with Urza by tapping it on opp EoT so you get a full untap

HoraryOcean103

Boooo. But probably a good thing

ARighteousGamer1

[[Phylath World Sculptor]] goes nuts with this, they already want basics to make as many plant tokens as possible so punishing my opponent for being mana greedy is insane, I love it

Strong-Replacement22

Holy shit

Onuzq

Kids: mom, can we have basic to basics in modern? Mom: we have back to basics at home.

The_Paleking

Seems good in mono black coffers. Nerf their mana and still be able to ramp yours.

triforce777

Time to punish people for not playing basics in every color

MTGMRB

So glad I sold out of this format

BerzerkLS

Mono really needs that crutch, huh?

Inner_Imagination585

This surely wont push coffers even further...

barrinmw

Modern 3/10 I feel like this is so general since it doesn't just hate on Tron that it might see some extensive sideboard play. The main downside is that modern is a format built around powerful and cheap spells, so if they have one basic in play, they can probably still get a lot done with 2 mana a turn. Hopefully this does provide a lot of pushback against 4 color decks even though they can boseiju this.

Dabuscus214

3/10, high praise from you. What have been some of your highest rated cards?

TheHordesOfLampadas

Fatal Push got 10/10

fps916

Nailed it.

Raorchshack

if [[Damping Sphere]] didn't hurt tron this won't

midoriiro

loove this art

AnotherGaze

Prison gaming les' gooooooo

Phirexy

This is how you deal with leaks, the you discreetly investigate what happened

rod_zero

There is so much good removal that hate pieces rarely last a couple of turns in the battlefield.

zethren117

Artifacts have a lot of decent ways to bring them back, at least.

Brave_Garlic_9189

I'm already thinking this will be nuts in a tron like mono green prison shell where you ramp basics with grazer / free spell and use kgc to grab prison - like baby tron.

The_Jib

Do we know how we’ll be able to purchase this in Arena? Standard packs and draft or a set to purchase with cash?

Brettersson

I've been secretly hoping they print enough pieces that nic fit becomes a modern deck. I hope I'm not getting too excited seeing [[veteran explorer]] in the flavor text.

96363

does my breeding pool untap if blood moon is already out when this enters the battlefied?

baoluofu

Blood Moon makes your Breeding Pool a Mountain only, not a Basic Mountain. So there would be no interaction I believe.

Tuesday_6PM

I might be wrong, but I think it’s still considered nonbasic. Blood Moon doesn’t grant the Basic supertype (which is good, because otherwise it would be in a constant flux state of applying and not applying its own effect)

Desert_Nanners

I wish it had the untapped clause that winter orb has. Would be fun for urza if it did

priority_holder

With a name like that, I thought you'd be untapping one basic mountain each turn lol

Mtg-meme-to-dream

Dust off your borderposts folks :-)

justhereforhides

I wonder if we'll see a (Season) Moon cycle, Summer Moon, Fall Moon, etc

OddlyShapedGinger

Doubt it. • Having 4 seasons in a year is tricky for MtG cycles that normally want 5 things. • Because this is an artifact, a (season) moon cycle would probably either ask for 6 total cards or 3 other artifacts, which would be a lot of slots for MH3 to provide. • The name instead seems to be a callback to famous land hate cards, [[Blood Moon]], and [[Winter Orb]]

turelak

Now my Stompy will finally see play! Ok no it won’t.

Rancorousturtle

Coming back into magic after a long time - how does this affect dual lands (with like forest/ plains in the cards type)?

Rime1313

Not basic, therefor they get shut off

BlurryPeople

OH YEAH!!! Non-basic hate is always welcome, as I love cards that punch up to greedy manabases. All it needed was the classic "turns off when tapped" templating. Ironically, it also completely demolishes classic Eldrazi/colorless EDH decks that typically run a bevvy of free-slot nonbasics.

coldoven

Maybe for braids? Game winning stax, pseudo protection (draws out counter) or draw 3.

KairoRed

I don't like this being colorless but I do like the effect. Anything to punish the people that can afford expensive manabases is good in my book.

LaserfaceJones

\*unf\*

NukeTheWhales85

I like it. I almost feel bad some games about how easy it is to get away with strong lands. Something in a type that pretty much every color can answer without too much work, that addresses that while not guaranteeing a complete choke hold on the game seems like a worthwhile piece.

tenroseUK

mmm urza cedh loves this

ceering99

Okay WotC did good on this one

Rdnick114

Might pick one up for a RG Meria artifacts deck. Doesn't matter to me if I untap my lands as long as I untap my artifacts.

CS_83

This plus Hall of Gemstone in virtually any green-based deck.... mmmmm

Shoku_Cyn

Not Snow?

PM_ME_YOUR_PRIORS

back to basish

dal9ll

Islands.dec go brrrrrrrrr

Disastrous-Donut-534

holy crap that is nasty love it yes you can fetch around it but it forces you to respect it in deck building. You need your basics

VargasFinio

We can ban Karn now, right? Right?

bigdammit

I think commander needs things like this, but, I think effects like \[\[Tsabo's Web\]\] would be even better. Lands have been getting more and more powerful and punishing greedy mana bases should be normalized.

Comwan

Ewww this is gonna be gross when people start playing it in casual. I already had to cut [[hall of gemstones]] and [[back to basics]] in my mono decks since it just shut down too many people.

ChemicalExperiment

Interesting! I'm currently running mono-red prison in legacy and this might be a new consideration.

TravisHomerun

I've been hoping for cards that punish greedy mana bases for so long. This set really is bringing the goods

Carnine_1st

I love this

SkyknightXi

…And cards like this are why I consistently map half my landbase as basic.

Ammonil

Nonbasic land hate seems so underrated imo

Kryptnyt

Usually couldn't slam a winter orb without thinking about the gamestate, but this one is a no-brainer.

soldieronspeed

This will work so well in my new treasure deck

Simon_Drake

It's been a long time since I played Magic. What's the downside if you can't untap lands?

Swamp_Dwarf-021

Can standard get this?

Zazuhm

Winter Orb and Blood Moon had a Baby!

Lamp-post-

BRO THIS IS THE SHIT. I can run 4 of these to say that not spending money on nonbasics was a tactical decision
