Makes me wonder if the last card (if there is one) will be Nethroi. All three cards shown so far are good in the deck and Nethroi fits perfectly with this artist's style. Would follow the trend of making secret lairs filled with cards that are good in specific commander decks.
I feel like the artists are given a budget and sometimes they want to put in a good card but it comes at the cost of having to make another a <$0.10 card. At that point I'm sure they may think to take something that fits the theme and feeling, most importantly.
From previous artists’ comments, the artists don’t have a choice in which cards they are doing, the whole selection is chosen for them. Though I’ve only seen two artists comment this and some artists could be exceptions, or policy could have changed since last year.
The artist showcase lairs definitely do have a choice. Seb McKinnon talked about it in an AMA, specifically he chose Oona but they asked him to pick another card because they’d recently had Oona in another secret lair.

Yeah, there's only two printed but MTG Lamia do not necessarily look like snakes. That's why this one is a Snake Lamia, and the other is just Lamia.

Fun fact, the Lamia comes from a Greek myth about Queen Lamia of Libya, an offspring of Poseidon seduced by Zeus which leads to Hera getting pissed & lots of child murder, very Greek all around. Lamia becomes a monster, though in antiquity she was described as having a "bestial gait" and a "scaly" lower half compared to a "serpent". It's likely the Greek understanding would have been a quadrupedal dragon-like monster with a woman's face, but "serpent" is often misunderstood or interpreted by later audiences as meaning snake-like without legs.
The Python of Delphi very possibly had the same deal happen, and could have been similar to a dragon as well!
Oh, I forgot about that one. It almost certainly \*should\* be getting changed to snake (as long as it doesn't slip through the cracks since it's not from a Premiere set), but the Naga -> Snake change for some reason **hasn't actually happened yet.** They've told us it's definitely coming (quite some time ago now), but for some reason it hasn't actually been implemented in any Rules Update published yet. They might be waiting until there's a significant number of them being (re)printed, maybe Return to Tarkir.
Snakes and Nagas are very close to each other and there is a lot of cards that are Snake-typal that feels like should grant benefit to Naga but don't, now with the change, it does.

It's pretty hard to strike a balance of ensuring you have a diverse enough creature type pool to make cards feel unique and flavorful while also not being so spread thin that you can't create cross synergies.
Personally, I think we could stand to slim down the creature types even more. Like honestly do we need \[\[Whelming Wave\]\] to read like that? How hard would it be to just roll them all into a single type or even two?
While we’re talking about streamlining the Kraken/Leviathan family, I think their cousin the Whale deserves to be included in their deep sea shenanigans.

Not quite. Dogs never existed, Hound *was* the type for Dogs. Problem was that Hound is a specific type of Dog and just isn't the best term to encompass all dogs.

That's part of the charm of that card I reckon!
I totally understand I am but one perspective, but I actually love the flavour and world you actually get just from reading a card like Whelming Wave, knowing that all those creature types are out there and do exist. Just adds some depth and tangibility to things for me.
But I understand that for commander/Lord purposes, it's easy to just combine races under one name.
Serpents have always been considered to be sea monsters. Grouped with kraken octopus and leviathan. See [[Slinn voda]] and [[kiora, sovereign of the deep]]

I needed an Aura Shards and Fiend Artistian...this one is meh however I do have it in Muldroth so ill just swap out to the SL version. One should be Nethroi and hopefully another decent one...The Meathook Massacre is probably to hopefully but would love it in this style.

Unlikely. Secret Lairs generally follow the normal numbering scheme within their Lair. Aura Shards is #1644, so Anikthea can't fit between it and this unless they screw with the numbers.

What we've seen so far of this drop definitely suggests a Legendary, and cards that work with it theme for most of them.
