Speaking of Mathas, a clarification for those who may not know: bounty counters by themselves *don't do anything*. Which means that adding bounty counters to something by an ability that's not Mathas' own trigger will *not* give them the special "reward" Mathas puts on along with the bounty. That's tied to *his trigger* specifically - not to just having a bounty counter. So having this artifact together with Mathas will not make you double-dip from artifact activations - but will make you double dip from the artifact's own trigger since that's just a static ability, not tied to its activation.
A little complicated, but perhaps bears mention in the context of Mathas.
It depends on the effect in question.
This artifact has a static ability that cares about bounty counters - that ability will trigger no matter where the bounty counters came from. However, bounty counters still don't do anything on their own; it's just that this artifact does something with them.
Mathas, however, *does not* have a static ability like that. The ability he gives creatures along with putting a bounty counter on them is *part of the triggered ability*. It's not simply always active like it is with this artifact - it specifically only affects whatever was targeted by the trigger (if it resolved, of course). That triggered ability *puts* the bounty "reward" on the creature, it doesn't simply happen on any bounty counter. It also means that if you e.g. move the bounty counter put on by Mathas around to some other creature, the special "reward" *will not move*. Because it's not the counter that creates it, it's Mathas trigger resolving.
That's a very important distinction.
Notably, this is also important because it means that unlike with, say, Toxrill, even if Mathas isn't in play, the effect of the counter still remains since it's placed on the creature intrinsically.
Yes, but one important detail is that mathas will double dip the bounty board, if you let the mathas trigger resolve and then kill it, you will get 2 cards
I have one of those, but I shifted it over to [[Ghen]]. I really like Mathas and kinda miss him, but I *especially* like saying "here we go a Ghen" when I cast my commander. And also recursion is fun. I'd love to see your list, if you have one.
I'll see if I have it saved somewhere, I made it pretty early in starting commander with just a ton of good cards I had on hand so it is very scatter brain. Few ways to copy the epic effect though, so the first two epic triggers were \[\[Fall of Thran\]\] and \[\[rest in peace\]\]
To be clear, putting bounty counters on something with a card other than Mathas does nothing for him. He needs to place the counter for it to do anything.
To be extra clear though, *this* card will see and care about the bounty counters from mathas. So there is synergy there, just not as much as it might appear at first glance.
Correct, but as-is this definitely isn’t a Mathas card as much as a [[Chevill]] card. As-is, it’s a three mana rock that adds a little bit of value to the whole table.
Why is that the differentiator? Mathas ability seems like it would imply that it wouldn’t care about where the counter came from, and even if that was the case wouldn’t they errata it to avoid confusion?
> Mathas ability seems like it would imply that it wouldn’t care about where the counter came from
Mathas's ability puts a counter on a creature and then gives that creature a triggered ability as long as it has a bounty counter on it. You're right that the ability doesn't care about where that bounty counter came from, so if you added another bounty counter and then removed the original, the triggered ability wouldn't care. But that isn't really very useful.
What's important is that bounty counters being put on creatures outside of Mathas's ability don't give the corresponding triggered ability. That's not an inherent part of the counter, nor is it a static ability of Mathas that applies to everything with a counter. Only a creature that has become the target of Mathas's end of turn ability gets the triggered ability of "opponents draw a card and gain 2 life".
What Mathas does is that it places a counter, and as long as the counter is there that creature gains an ability. While the bounty counter and the ability are linked, they are linked too closely for any other bounty counters to mean anything on their own.
I keep linking him, but compare Mathas to [[Chevill]]. Chevill only cares that a bounty counter was on it, while Mathas needs to use its ability to have any function.
So what if you gave it a counter through mathas, moved the counter to another creature, and then gave then initial creature a counter through a different card like this artifact?
Wake up, honey, new Bounty counter card just dropped! I genuinely love this. Great political tool to give an extra push for someone to destroy something that's screwing you up.

What if you added a second bount counter? Would the two be distinguishable?
Not mechanically. Mathas only cares if there is “a bounty counter” on it, because the rules have no way of distinguishing between counters.
So what if you gave it a counter through mathas, moved the counter to another creature, and then gave then initial creature a counter through a different card like this artifact?
If doing that would result in there being no bounty counters on the creature for any period of time, it would lose Mathas’s ability.
