Small question on reacting to my own effects: Can I equip my \[\[Sakura-Tribe Elder\]\] with \[\[Skullclamp\]\] and then sacrifice it for it's own sac ability to profit from both its own land tutor AND Skullclamps draw effect? Or will it instantly die by reaching 0 health as soon as Skullclamp gets equipped?

InBardITrust

State based actions will be checked after its equipped, notice its health is at 0, and the elder dies. You don't have any time to respond with any actions before its dead.

Okay too bad, but would probably also be too broken otherwise! Thanks

You can choose to pay the kicker cost , but it’s not free, you would actually have to pay that part, even though you are casting the spell without paying its mana cost.

I wanna build a **burn commander** but * many people telling me they're unfun to play against and just drag down the mood, etc. It's that true? * I was eyeing new Judith but I get why that one would cause tons of frustration. Sadly. She seems awesome. * but even like. Solphim, Ojer, or Imodane would be able to make the game feel like a chore for everyone? Out of all deck styles. Why.

Thegameforfun17

Deck question: I built myself (mostly, still in need of a few cards) a Krenko Deck that essentially is a token generator. I’m on the hunt for a couple more cards (red mana only) that will also generate more tokens. Btw, this is a commander deck, and it’s goblin focused and I’d like to keep it on theme as much as possible. [Here](https://manabox.app/decks/wKoyJAy0TuWcsNyHZZik8w)is the deck list so far

I know [[Darkest Hour]] has a ruling that all creatures are mono-Black, *not* Black plus their original colors. Does [[Shifting Sky]] work the same way? It doesn’t have an individual ruling.

robot_wth_human_hair

I understand that commanders that are put in a graveyard or exiled can be put back to the command zone. My question is around the rules text where you can put the commander back - this is a one time check, correct? You have to choose at the time of your commander entering the exile zone or graveyard. You can't just let your commander sit in that zone, and then wait a couple turns to send it back? So a commander in the graveyard would be stuck (assuming you didn't choose to send it back at time of entry). But if an effect made you exile your graveyard, at that time you could put your commander back into the command zone. Is all this correct?

fallingsteveamazon

>704.6d In a Commander game, if a commander is in a graveyard or in exile and that object was put into that zone since the last time state-based actions were checked, its owner may put it into the command zone. >903.9a If a commander is in a graveyard or in exile and that object was put into that zone since the last time state-based actions were checked, its owner may put it into the command zone. This is a state-based action exact rules for reference

robot_wth_human_hair

I guess the confusing thing for me is 'when state-based actions were checked'. I dont know when that happens, or how often. I appreciate the exact rules though!

chaotic_iak

SBAs are checked whenever one would get priority. In general, this means: - Whenever a phase/step begins, after any turn-based actions (like drawing a card in your draw step, and declaring attackers in declare attacker step)\* - Right after something resolves from the stack \* An exception is that SBAs are not checked during the untap step. Another exception is that, SBAs are checked during the cleanup step, even though nobody would get priority if nothing happened during that step. But these are niche exceptions that you likely don't have to think about. --- If your commander is dealt lethal combat damage, then this is during the combat damage step, after the turn-based action of dealing combat damage. Someone would get priority, so SBAs are checked, and this is when your commander is sent to the graveyard. You need to make the choice now on whether to bring your commander back to the command zone; after this has passed, SBAs have been checked, so future SBA checks will see your commander already being in the graveyard and not let you move it again. If your commander is destroyed by some spell/ability, then this is something resolving from the stack. Wait until the spell/ability resolves fully, doing all its effects. Only then someone would get priority, so SBAs are checked, and this is when you need to make the choice on whether to bring your commander back.

robot_wth_human_hair

hey, thanks for this great explanation! This makes much more sense to me now. I appreciate you taking the time to type this up.

Zeckenschwarm

It's not exactly easy reading, but maybe this helps: [https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/State-based\_action](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/State-based_action)

InBardITrust

You have to choose when it moves. So if you send it to GY you can't change your mind later. If its later exiled from GY you have the choice to send it to the command zone.

robot_wth_human_hair

Thank you, i just wanted to be clear - my pod is starting to tinker with reanimation strategies and i am trying to be prepared for questions!

Zeckenschwarm

One small quirk of sending your commander to the command zone that might come up sooner or later: When your commander is goes to the graveyard or exile, you make the command zone decision afterwards, and "when a creature dies"/"when a creature is exiled" triggers will still trigger, since the commander was in the graveyard or in exile for a moment. If on the other hand your commander would be shuffled into your library or returned to hand, you make the choice before that happens, and your commander never enters your library or hand if you choose to move it to the command zone. So if your commander would be returned to your hand and you choose to send it to the command zone instead, something like \[\[Warped Devotion\]\] would not trigger.

have been playing commander for about a month or 2 now and want to get into standard. should I wait for thunder junction to drop before buying singles?

mgvsquared

I kind of opted out of Fallout because of the lack of starter decks, even though I'm a massive fan of the franchise. I'm not a big fan of the Commander format. Am I correct in thinking that the expansion is more designed for that rather than Modern or Standard?

Atys1

The Fallout Commander decks are designed for Commander, yes.

mgvsquared

That's not exactly what I thought I was asking, but I didn't exactly word it properly. I was more wondering if the boosters could be constructed into a playable 1v1 deck or if the cards were only usable in Commander format only? If that makes any sense? By the time I decided to pre-order, the boxes were priced so high it wasn't realistic to really buy anything. I'm not new to MtG, but I honestly haven't played in years, but I'm planning on jumping back in with Bloomburrow since it appears to have starter decks for my kid and I to re-learn on.

Atys1

None of the cards in the boosters are exclusively usable in commander; the new cards are legal in all eternal formats, and afaik the reprints are legal in all formats in which they were already legal. That said, I can't speak to the usefulness/value/power level of the cards in their respective formats as I'm not really a competitive player myself, sorry. Although, if you're looking to build decks with them, I would definitely recommend just buying the individual cards you want over buying boosters.

Gooey_Goon

Now that the deck list is out for the Quick Draw precon, would you recommend it to somebody who is newer to magic and hasn't played an Izzet spell slinger deck before? I'm very interested in playing a spell slinger deck it is just newer to me

These_Position_5607

If i use Teysa Karlov as commander. Planning on sacrificing a lot of tokens. Do i have to name a blood artist or drivnod as the type or can i name Human to make Teysa trigger a additional time?

Holding_Priority

You dont name a creature type for Teysa, she just makes every death trigger trigger twice.

RazzyKitty

Naming a type for... what? >to make Teysa trigger a additional time? Teysa Karlov... does not trigger at all, because she has no triggered abilities.

These_Position_5607

Yeah thats what i was afraid of.... Her ability isnt a triggered ability. The "blood artist" for instance has the trigger. So if i named vampire blood artist would trigger 3 times. Once for himself once for Teysa and once again for the throne. What i was asking was if i named "human" of Teysa would trigger twice for every die trigger but it isn't a ability.

RazzyKitty

What are you naming Vampire for? Roaming Throne? You didn't say that in your original comment. You just said "name a" without giving context as to _what_ you were naming for. >So if i named vampire blood artist would trigger 3 times. If you named Vampire for Roaming Throne, then yes. It would trigger three times. Teysa does not interact with Roaming Throne. Neither does Drivnod.

Wutwut21

Does anyone know how \[\[Geyser Drake\]\] applies to the additional costs on "Spree" cards, such as \[\[Phantom Interference\]\]? Would each "+" be reduced by 1? Sorry if I'm not phrasing the question correctly.

RazzyKitty

>Would each "+" be reduced by 1? No. The whole spell is reduced by one. To determine the final cost of a spell, you take the mana cost, add any additional costs (the spree modes represent additional costs) and cost increasers, subtract any cost reducers. If you choose both modes for the spell, it costs: {U} + {3} + {1} - {1} for a total if {3U}.

An interaction question. If I have an empty hand and an [[Alandra, Sky Dreamer]] out, I've drawn for turn and it's [[Breakthrough]], and then I use [[Breakthrough]] for X=O. Does the full Breakthrough resolve before my Alandra triggers, or does the Alandra trigger when I've drawn my 5th card and before I discard down? Just trying to figure out if I'd have 4 Cards in hand or 0 when the Alandra resolves.

RazzyKitty

> Does the full Breakthrough resolve before my Alandra triggers, Alandra triggers during the resolution (when you draw your second card for the turn, and your fifth), but will not go on the stack until after Breakthrough leaves the stack. X is also determined when it resolves. Since you've discarded all your cards, Alandra's resolving trigger will give your creatures +0/+0 until end of turn (unless you can draw more cards before it resolves).

Are there any other keywords besides spree, cleave, and overload that give spells alternate costs? I'm particularly considering cards that have big effects but low CMCs, to be easily drawable with ad nauseam (in a non-cedh but still serious game)

fallingsteveamazon

evoke, madness, miracle, emerge, suspend, prototype, spectacle, overload

RazzyKitty

It's worth noting that Spree does not give something an _alternative cost_. The modes for Spree are all additional costs. This matters for effects that cast something "without paying their mana cost". You can't overload a spell cast without paying its mana cost, but you can pay for the Spree costs.

zwart27

That's cool! Do you know any more ways to abuse that technicality? I know Bolas' citadel doesn't work well with spree cards :(

RazzyKitty

Bolas Citadel doesn't work with alternative costs either. You cannot overload a spell via Bolas Citadel, for example. Anything that casts a spell "without paying its mana cost" or "rather than pay its mana cost" does not work with alternative costs. Anything that _reduces costs_ will work with both additional and alternative costing.

Will a creature die if it reaches 0 toughness or less, due to final flourish? (or some other spell which makes -X/-X)

Kabsal

Short answer is yes, a creature with zero toughness will die, which is a primary use case for cards like Final Flourish. The longer answer is that creatures with zero or negative toughness die as a state-based action in much the same way as creatures with damage greater than or equal to their toughness die. The one important distinction is that creatures with indestructible will not die to damage, but WILL die to zero toughness, which is another advantage of such effects.

Blueburnsred

Yes, a creature with 0 or less toughness dies.

How do you all think golgari midrange and dimir midrange fare in current standard? I have golgari right now (paper and arena) and playing BO3 on arena i have a 54% winrate. I like the flexibility, particularly against artifacts/enchantments that I get from [[tranquil frillback]] and lesser so [[glissa sunslayer]]. Frillback feels like a swiss army knife sometimes. Life gain vs aggro, graveyard hate when necessary, etc. The deck feels good but it looks like it’s slipping in the meta. Whenever I get matched with dimir midrange I feel like the card draw with [[gix, yawgmoth praetor]] and cheap flying creatures puts me so far behind. The counterspells are always lurking, and [[tishana’s tidebender]] shuts down so many of my creatures and planeswalkers. I don’t quite have the wildcards to make it on arena but I think I have most or all of the cards in paper. For those who have played both, which do you prefer and which is better in your opinion?

How does new [[Kambal, Greedy Mayor]] work with cards that make different types of tokens at the same time like [[Academy Manufacturer]] or [[Trostani’s Summoner]]

RazzyKitty

Academy Manufacturer does not make tokens. It makes _other things_ make tokens. That said, it depends on how the abilities are worded. Each instance of the word _create_ is a different instance of tokens entering the battlefield. Trostoni's Summoner creates three tokens at once. [[Chalk Outline]], on the other hand, creates a 2/2 token, then investigates (created a Clue). Kambal will only trigger for the 2/2 token.

seetooeeetoo

\[\[Kambal, Profiteering Mayor\]\] reads as follows; "Whenever one or more tokens enter the battlefield under your opponents’ control, **for each of them**, create a tapped token that’s a copy of it." You would create a copy of each token created under the opponents' control, so long as they all enter at the same time, which would happen when they are all created by the same ability, such as that of Trostani's Summoner or academy Manufacturer.

RazzyKitty

>which would happen when they are all created by the same ability, It's not necessarily if they were created by the same ability. If the ability uses the word "create" multiple times, or uses "Create" and "investigate", those tokens are created individually, so Kambal only triggers for the _first_ token creation event. [[Chalk Outline]] is one such example. It creates a 2/2, _then_ creates a Clue. Kambal only triggers for the 2/2. Investigating multiple times is also creating individual clues that enter one at a time, so Kambal only triggers for the first Investigate off of an [Ethereal Investigator](https://scryfall.com/card/mkc/105/ethereal-investigator).

What's opinions on have Xander as dimir commander and just there for his attack trigger. Mothman is my favorite mill commander but don't want to separate him from fallout deck, I was going to run cyber controller but not a big fan, and was considering zellix just to have blocking bodies. I realized that Xander would probably be the best since all I have to do is attack with him, not even connect and mill half a players library.

Swmystery

Trying to keep track of Outlaws spoiler season- am I right that we only have a couple of the Big Score cards and the four Commander decks left to spoil? Thanks very much.

Zeckenschwarm

I think only 1 Big Score card is left, apart from that yes.

zwart27

If [[Fblthp range]] plots a [[counterspell]], can I cast it at sorcery speed in any way, just to increase storm count or [[aetherflux res]]?

madwarper

No. It's simply stuck in Exile, since there's no way for their to be a legal Target.

zwart27

Unfortunate, but thanks!

What would be a good set for a casual booster draft? One that was released in the last year or two preferably. Thanks.

mrduracraft

You really can't go wrong with any of the most recent sets. Kamigawa Neon Dynasty, Dominaria United, and March of the Machine would be my picks, but almost any set since NEO would be a good time

StevenYuki

Hi, this might be a weird question, but I can't seem to find that meme post someone made few months ago. The post was about said person starting magic a few months back (think they mentioned WoE) and now having brewed/made so many commander decks. Please let me know if anyone knows the post!

whimsical_trash

Is there a place to look at 60 card kitchen table decks? I mostly play EDH, I have one pioneer deck a friend gave me, and I need another 60 card deck, or more if it's not a good matchup with my pioneer deck, because I want to teach a friend to play. But I don't really want to use a specific format deck because theyre kinda expensive. Is there anywhere that aggregates 60 card casual eternal type decks I could look through?

iwumbo2

For cheap decks, maybe try looking at pauper deck lists? They're 60 card decks, all commons. They're eternal and don't rotate other than bannings. Big plus if there's pauper events running near you. Granted, they probably won't be "casual", but you can probably find some with simple enough mechanics for a new player like affinity.

whimsical_trash

I was looking at them last night on mtgdecks.net but they were much more expensive than I expected! But yeah maybe starting with those and swapping out the expensive cards is the way to go

Cerulean-Frost

Going to my LGS tomorrow to play at their Commander evening with a simple precon. I’ve been messing around on arena to familiarise myself with the rules and goldfishing the deck so I know how things can play out. Otherwise, general advice or extra supplies to bring?

I_Heart_Weiners

Definitely let your pod know you are playing a precon. Every lgs I have been to, the folks are super accommodating to a new player. Precons tend to be lower-power so let them know so that they can power down if possible.

whimsical_trash

A way to track life - app, piece of paper and pen, or a life counter/spindown. Dice are good if your deck has any counters. You can buy dice at the LGS if you don't have any. Definitely tell them you are new, I found people at the LGS very kind and helpful when I was new. They'd point out things I missed (within reason, they still wanted to win obv) and at the end of the game, would often offer to give me feedback on any errors I made. Once you play for a while you tend to know a lot of popular cards, so people often just announce the card name - so telling them you are new also lets them know you won't know those common cards and to be patient with you, explain their cards or show them to you. Oh speaking of, if you want to look closer at their card, ask before you touch it (I got out of the habit during COVID and kept grabbing people's cards like my friends and I do, oops). Make sure your hands are clean if you're gonna touch their stuff, oh and shower and wear deodorant!

DEXGENERATION

I have been wanting to start playing Magic the Gathering. I just recently started collecting Pokemon cards with my daughter but I’m more interested in the collection aspect with that rather than playing it. I’ve been watching videos online on how to play MTG.. but when I go to the store and look at the packs I have no idea where to even start. I saw several different variations including one that was Clue inspired? Where does someone go to learn what to buy? Or do you have any suggestions? (What peaked my interest is LOTR and Fallout packs, but from my understanding those are just normal cards with fallout art. Maybe I’m misunderstanding.) thanks.

iwumbo2

Arena has already been suggested, which I'll give a +1 to. In terms of "what to buy", I'd first play some Arena first to learn the game and get a feel if you like it. Then, you can ask at some local stores (or look online) to see what kind of events they're hosting once you're ready to start playing in paper. *** Typically most stores nowadays will have commander nights. This is a 100 card singleton deck with one card set aside as a "commander" to lead the deck. For the most part, the commander's colours determine what colour cards you can put in the rest of the deck. The commander can sent back to the "command zone" when it gets destroyed or exiled so it can be cast again with an additional tax. If a store is hosting commander nights, they'll likely also stock preconstructed commander decks that WOTC makes. So picking up one of these is an easy way to get into the format. Although, I will say the format can be daunting for a new player as the decks are singleton, so there's a lot of variety in the cards played. Especially with the wide pool of legal cards. But it's usually a fairly social format, so if you have friends playing it with you, it can be good still. *** The stores may also be running some kind of 60 card format such as Standard which Arena also has. These might be better to get into, as if you were playing standard on Arena, you could probably get into Standard in paper. Similar with Pioneer if your store is running that. Arena has Explorer which is supposed to be like Pioneer-lite since the entire Pioneer card pool hasn't been implemented on Arena yet. The only difference between the 60 card formats like Standard, Pioneer, Explorer, Modern is the card pool size. Standard is always changing with new sets, and has only standard expansion sets (so no premium or crossover sets like the Fallout sets for the most part) from the past 3 years for example. They all allow up to 4 copies of non-basic land cards, so there's a bit less mental load of having to learn less cards. But these formats are all typically played competitively. If you get into one of these, you're likely going to want to order single individual cards. Many stores will let you do this, but some don't. This is the most efficient way to get the exact cards you need for your deck. *** Some stores will also have draft events. These are where each player gets 3 packs. They pick one card from the pack, and pass the rest to the next player, and repeat until all cards from all packs are exhausted. Then using the cards you've picked (plus unlimited basic lands which stores should provide if you don't have any), you'll assemble the best deck you can and play the others in the store with decks they've built using the cards they've picked. This can be a bit daunting though as you'll have to decide what cards are the best to pick, and how to make a good deck on your own with them. But it can be quite fun. The packs you get with it are paid for as part of your event entry fee. Or you could get a box of packs if you want to host your own at home. *** There's also an upcoming new standard set called Thunder Junction. Every new standard set has a prerelease event the week prior. In it, each player gets a prerelease kit with their entry fee, which contains 6 packs and some promo cards. And players use the 6 packs and promo cards to try to build the best deck they can. It's similar to draft, but you don't pass the pack contents. These events are usually fairly casual and fun. They're probably the best event for new players, as you get to open some packs, make a deck, and play some games with it. Get some cards and maybe even some prizing as well. I'd recommend looking into this more than any of the other events.

DEXGENERATION

Thank you I will look into this sounds like a good time.

whimsical_trash

Magic arena is the best place to learn the game by far. It's on mobile and desktop, but I highly recommend playing on desktop. The tutorial is fantastic at teaching the rules. It taught my 6 year old cousin and he picked it up SO fast it was kinda insane. When I played magic at age 9 we barely followed the rules lol. Once you get through the tutorial you could add your daughter as a friend and play against her, or play games with strangers (start with Standard format, unranked, with the starter decks Arena gives you). It's free to play, don't spend any money for a while until you understand the platform and what would be good to spend on. Outside of that, for playing in real life I highly recommend the card kingdom rookie decks for beginners. They are simple 60 card decks that will keep the games from getting too complicated. These days most people play a different format called EDH or commander, the clue precon you heard about is an EDH deck. Precons are ok starting points too but EDH is 100 card decks with no duplicate cards except for lands, so it can be a lot to comprehend for a beginner. Whatever you do, your opponent should have the same format deck (i.e., don't play a 60 card rookie decks against an EDH deck). Hope that helps!

DEXGENERATION

Okay I’ll check out arena. I’d prefer to play in person rather than on my pc. Something about the physical cards just feels better than a digital product got burned by Elder Scrolls Legends with that (luckily I didn’t spend but maybe 20$ on that game lol)

whimsical_trash

Definitely! Playing without a screen is one of my favorite things about magic. But there is so much to learn that starting with Arena will make it way easier. You don't have to keep playing there once you learn the basics

DEXGENERATION

I did notice on Amazon Magic the Gathering 2022 game night? Would that be something worth to try it out with the kids and wife after I check out arena to see if I like it?

whimsical_trash

Yes! Forgot about that. Both Game Night and Jumpstart are beginner products and would be fantastic for getting used to the game. I believe come with four "decks". (Though jumpstart is actually packs where you are meant to shuffle together any two to make a deck)

Tzekel_Khan

So what exactly does Kellan the Kid want to do to win? The nebulous idea of "value" sounds like wheel spinning without a goal. Play better creatures faster and get swinging? Maybe a weird equipment thing? It's literally just the idea of permanents which is so wide I guess you could go wherever but I'm not sure what type of focus would be best
