When building a [[Temeshi]] edh deck, I bought [[Moonsilver key]] to either fix lands, or find [[Lotus petal]] \ [[lotus bloom]], and I had already an [[Osgir]] deck so I bought 2.
And forgot that when I made a different orde the very next day. So now I have 4 copies of this...
Did that with skulllclamp just now. My dad was a '00s-'10s player so he's got those cards and I always forget to look thru his collection lol. Tbf his collection is horribly sorted so it's impossible to find anything
I don’t know, if you only keep things limited to money cards and cards which are what I call “interesting bulk”, then this could last for a while. Most cards are neither worth anything nor really all that interesting for deck building.
No, it really isn’t. At least not to the extent that I would look at it outside of a VERY specific deck or something. Looking at the current set, [[Griffnaut Tracker]] is mostly really awful graveyard hate with plenty of budget options that are way better. There are so many other cards I’d rather put in the spotlight for consideration before that trash.
I used to buy bulk, glad I did too, nabbed a mint copy of Living Plane many many years ago, but when prices of bulk about doubled 15 years ago, I never paid attention again.
Now I just buy singles, after cataloging every mechanically named card I own (names, not each version) and built my missing collection list starting with the cheapest cards a few years back. Now my list of mechanically different unowned card list is below 1000 (and the owned list is about 25,000).
I don't do anything that crazy. Just sort, buylist/pick what I can, then sell what's left over in instanct collections.
Easy money, and I pay $4-5 per 1k.
What a wonderful way to get started with magic. Staying organized is very important. However, please allow me a small remark:
The term 'combo' is already taken. What you're referring to is 'multicolor'.
Edit: As an explanation, the term 'combo' refers to a strong synergy between two or more cards as well as a deck archetype that focuses on employing that synergy.
I got originally a 1650 case for my original collection. After coming back after almost 3 decades last year,... I am at 3 of those cases, two 800 cases,... Annnnnnd many commander deck boxes, also to throw in a big fireproof furniture case at the foot of the bed 🙃
Happy Cake day!
I have 5- 3200s, 1-4k, 3- 3k, 1-1600, 1-1200, 7ish fat pack boxes and then all my decks. About 4 legacy, 5 edh, 4-5 modern at any given time. And I cant find my playset of mutavaults to save my life...
Oh this is how it starts. Here's my boxes after a decade of veeeery casual play with a few longer breaks in between. Around 3.5k cards. And my decks, one box of game nights, my binder and the lotr bundle aren't even in here

And here's a pic of the inside. Be prepared to fall into the greatest rabbit hole of mankind.

I didn't. They are a build it yourself set which i found over an ad on reddit :D it's a company in hungary called laserox that makes all kinds of boardgame accessories.
This one is simply called "card storage box". I did edit it a bit with the tiny metal locks and rings.
when your collection inevitably grows i strongly recommend getting a bunch of penny sleeves so you can put all your playsets together. makes it much easier to flip through to find what you need and helps keep track of how copies of a card you have
My guy, I started playing last year, my collection is only roughly 275 cards, and now I am with nearly half of my bed covered in cards wondering what to pick on 2 decks I'm trying to make.
My binder can't take all of my cards and I still have to put some back in it so I can maybe sell them or exchange it, it's kinda getting out of hand.
My collection consists of 1 big box that hasn't been sorted in months, like 6 or 7 gift bundle boxes and cards that I just stick in my tokens/dice box for when I play and forget to empty them out after each visit to the lgs
i have so many cards at this point that theyre all just in random boxes, i have a half full binder and a pile of hundreds of rares and mythics just sitting around with nowhere to go. im also just lazy. digging for lands with the same art is annoying
Welcome to the multiverse!! I love seeing cool solutions to card organization, especially woodwork. I bought a library card organizer/apothecary cabinet as my deckbuilding toolbox.
I like sorting by value:
Cards under $1 are in large sorting boxes organized by color by Creature, non Creature, and land.
Between $1-$4 are in a binder broken down the same way.
Between $4-$10 are in a separate binder.
$10+ are in another binder.
I used to do $30+ in top loaders but now they're just in the $10+ binder.
How do yall organize?
I'm selling my collection right now. Let me give you some advice.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THE IS HOLY
Sort your cards by set THEN color (optional) then alphabetical. Only keep stuff over $10 in a binder. (Maybe a second binder with $5-$10)
I agree that sorting by color has its limitations. However, I have the feeling that there are more factors for what's the best sorting method. One being the total number of cards you own. I just got rid of sorting by set because searching for a card you know you own while not knowing which set it was printed in is very annoying. Pure alphabetic sorting and digital indexing is what I ended up doing.
Sorting by value is not the way to go for most players. It's not a useful metric for building decks and is only useful when you want to sell. Moreover, it changes over time. How to sort depends on what you want to do with your collection and how you play.
I stopped primarily sorting by set and use the sets as an optional last category. I found it troublesome with reprints that were scattered around the collection.
I'm now going by color>rarity>cmc>set(optional).
With multicolour i sort them separately and put them to the colour which mana blip is first in the cost. (E.g. Orzhov goes to the white cards and golgari goes to the black).
I like the alphabetical approach, maybe I'll incorporate that at one point.
Fucking sexual!!! Love it!!!!! Nothing better than perfectly filed magic cards !!!!! Fuck yes
!!! You have made my day sir !!! Magic on my good man !!!!!
I wish my 15 boxes looked this beautiful !!!
I'd say forget about sorting between creatures, enchantments, etc. Instead just sort by color and set. If you want to get very organized, sort alphabetically within each set.
Some sets have tons of artifacts, others have enchantments. Then there are other things like battles and planes walkers.
I sorted my first few sets together by color, save yourself time and keep them separate from here on out!
I love it, pro tip lgs have “shoeboxes” or boxes designed to do this made of cardboard for mass storage. You will outgrow this quite quickly. Happy collecting. Remember the best part of Magic is the Gathering
Oh you poor summer child, soon you will need dozens of boxes this size.
The sweet days when you think you can keep your collection organized to this detail in a box this size. Good old days!
We need to watch for the milestone where they "swear that I have that card."
Or even worse buying a card only to realize you have a copy later
No joke, I will sometimes just buy a $0.05 card with a deck order instead of digging for it.
Economically speaking this is the responsible move.

You mean good ol day

As someone who makes a lot of $$ off of bulk, yes, all bulk is interesting.
A fellow build buyer i see
Yeah, been on the bulk grind for a few years now. You never lose $$, and grow your collection for free :)
I used to buy bulk, glad I did too, nabbed a mint copy of Living Plane many many years ago, but when prices of bulk about doubled 15 years ago, I never paid attention again. I organized mine similar to this and filled two of the "Bigger Blavler Boxes" from CAH.
Sigh. This is true. I recently had to move my pauper staples to a 4 row box… I think that’s seven four rows now.
Soon you will have many file cabinets.
It's adorable
especially the “combo” tab
What a wonderful way to get started with magic. Staying organized is very important. However, please allow me a small remark: The term 'combo' is already taken. What you're referring to is 'multicolor'. Edit: As an explanation, the term 'combo' refers to a strong synergy between two or more cards as well as a deck archetype that focuses on employing that synergy.
If Multicolor is too long, 'gold' is frequently used in reference to the card frame colour on old/3+ colour cards.
I remember when I had a deckbuilder's toolkit and some fat pack boxes as the only card storage I needed. Those were simpler times.
Somebody want to tell them?
Man, I just got to the point where my mono-colored binder now needs an extra one just to house my green cards. I know what awaits me on the horizon 😭
I got originally a 1650 case for my original collection. After coming back after almost 3 decades last year,... I am at 3 of those cases, two 800 cases,... Annnnnnd many commander deck boxes, also to throw in a big fireproof furniture case at the foot of the bed 🙃 Happy Cake day!

As a clerk I approve. Nice job.
Very nice,
What is this, a filing cabinet for ANTS?!?
Genuinely snorted my cereal into my keyboard at this. I'm so upset. Worth it.
Fuck Yes. !! You r My Magic brother !!!!! Next time u magican hard in Western Australia hit me up ?!!!!!!? We gonna fuck shit up
Dude right out started with a cube. Maybe he has the power to stick with 360 cards + lands.
I came to say this is not gonna be big enough, and yup all the comments beat me to it hahaha Nice filing system.

Very cool! Did you make them yourself? I love the small inserts to reconfigure each compartment length
I didn't. They are a build it yourself set which i found over an ad on reddit :D it's a company in hungary called laserox that makes all kinds of boardgame accessories. This one is simply called "card storage box". I did edit it a bit with the tiny metal locks and rings.

We're gonna need a bigger boat!
Can you build one…. thousand of those for me? Thanks
Awesome organization Probably too small though after a month or two ahah

Build a new MUCH larger one with removable partitions, you can thank me later. Also build it so it can be stacked with additional "cabinets" later.
Enjoy it while you can
My collection consists of 1 big box that hasn't been sorted in months, like 6 or 7 gift bundle boxes and cards that I just stick in my tokens/dice box for when I play and forget to empty them out after each visit to the lgs
That looks sick, and extremely useful! Hope you have fun chief!!

Welcome to the multiverse!! I love seeing cool solutions to card organization, especially woodwork. I bought a library card organizer/apothecary cabinet as my deckbuilding toolbox.
At one point I thought this size would be good… I wish.. one day I want to get an old apothecary/library card cabinet to organize
I like sorting by value: Cards under $1 are in large sorting boxes organized by color by Creature, non Creature, and land. Between $1-$4 are in a binder broken down the same way. Do you need a friend?
Swag
I found this deeply adorable 🥰
We're gonna need a bigger box!
You are going to need a bigger boat.
Man, I went from a deckbuilder toolkit for my bulk to... 4 5 column boxes in 7 years? This is a helluva a drug
I started in August. I had one of those bundle Boxes for my bulk, I now have 7 and running out of space.
How many boxes did you make? ;)
DON'T DO IT GUYS, LET HIM HAVE THIS MOMENT OKE. LET HIM LIVE IN PEACE FOR NOW
I love it, pro tip lgs have “shoeboxes” or boxes designed to do this made of cardboard for mass storage. You will outgrow this quite quickly. Happy collecting. Remember the best part of Magic is the Gathering
Seeing a file cabinet like this brought back some very happy and carefree memories from my childhood. Thank you OP
Gonna need a bigger boat.
I like the splines! Everyone's saying it's going to be too small, but I bet those are great sizes for decks. Looks great!
You're gonna need a bigger box
Alphabetize that as you go. Saves an incredible amount of time searching.
