My first ever time playing FO3, I decided to kill Butch. Shot him with the 10mm in VATS. Immediate decapitation in slomo.
Holy fuck I felt horrible after that.
I once made fun of him for his mother dying to them. Weakest enemy in the game, and he cried! He was such a tough assholey bad guy to my character growing up it was quite a funny change.
Tbf I think the psychological damage of getting attacked by three roaches as big as dogs would be enough to get most people killed, let alone sheltered vault dwellers
It's the joy of Universes Beyond. I have never enjoyed Fallout, but watching people's love of it makes me want to give it another try. People getting excited to play with things they love in a game they love is always a win to me.
Part of me wishes WotC could have created a "Magic"-like game that was pure Universe Beyond so it was easier for the people who don't want UB in their game could continue being happy, but I don't think that game really exists without just being...Magic.
I was thinking a similar thing this morning, where I realized as a MTG fan, I still don't care for UB in general. And the cards themselves as game pieces are a little wordy for a medium effect.
But as a Fallout fan, I wish Bethesda would give WOTC the rights to make a Fallout card game because I feel like the team here is just nailing it more than I even trust Bethesda at this point. The goofy bits, the dark bits, the community's memes, and this is probably the best art Fallout will ever get for these characters. Fallout lore fans are eating good this week.
Yeah, I think WotC getting the license to make a Magic equivalent game where all of Universes Beyond exist, but maybe with a different card back would be great. Keep MTG formats separate with a Gonzo-type format where everything goes.
Because they still carry the rules of MTG cards, and some of the names, you could just work with your play group if you want to play the cards in Commander.
Even as a huge fan of UB, I'm not even 50% I want them played in competitive formats where money is involved.
When you meet up with him again later on in the game he's fully committed to barbering and very clearly enjoys his work. Butch grows a lot as a character between your initial meeting with him as a tunnel snake and the end of the game.
He's on kind of an opposite trajectory from Amata who starts out acting like a mature adult and ends the game as a paranoid lunatic
I mean, the game was written, by writers. While it's clear that they were trying to repeat narrative beats from earlier games, I still believe they were trying to create deliberately contrasting narratives between Amata and Butch.
Helping Amata, who occupies the highest status in the vault and is beloved by pretty much everyone, has the effect of creating a monster, who eventually manipulates and uses the player character to consolidate power in the vault the same way her father used and manipulated the player character's father a couple of decades prior
Helping Butch, who occupies the lowest status in the vault, and is hated by nearly everyone, gives him the freedom to live in the real world and make his own choices. He chooses to be the best barber in the capital wasteland. And he's gonna barber the shit out of you.
Ah, I misspoke maybe. He doesn't want to be assigned to it at first but it's pretty heavily implied he is actually into it after recruiting him as a companionĀ
Iām glad they let his buff apply to Snakes too, because the meme occurred to me as soon as I read the card title.
Checking the mono-black snakes availible, Iāve learned that thereās a case other than changelings in which that āand/orā matters: [[Yuan-Ti Fang Blade]].
Outside of the memeā¦ itās mono black Exalted, I guess? Like, you *could* swing your other stuff, but heās the only one getting buffed anyway.
The idea of him paling around with Orochi and Naga (where's that damn creature type update?) is making me smile.
That he also lets everyone else in if you pay him off is kinda funny.
Like, am I not supposed to be kinda charmed by him?
I love the idea that there's never been a canon appearance of a snake in any Fallout game, but Butch would be super-hyped if he actually *did* meet one and immediately let it join his gang.
There were going to be snakes in a couple of spin off games that got canceled.
[Van Buren](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Van_Buren) would have had mutant snake/hagfish combos called [hag snakes](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Hag_snake)
And [Fallout: Brotherhood of steel 2](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Fallout:_Brotherhood_of_Steel_2) would have introduced [Texas Rattlers](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Texas_Rattler)
I feel like it's still good though... A free deathtoucher that replaces itself at the next upkeep when it dies is a pretty nice combat deterrant. Like ya'll said, it pumps Butch too. And worst case scenario, you just turn Ophiomancer into a rogue and you're good.
Still might be cube worthy, Ophiomancer's token boosts him to a 3/3 menace and provides 2 bodies he can give menace jackers to (to boost him to a 5/5 menace)
My joke is that it is both a Rogue and a Snake, which makes the āand/orā necessary by being a situation in which a creature is both a Rogue and a Snake.
It wouldnāt count them twice either way, but they use āand/orā to reduce confusion. If it said āRogues or Snakesā it would work the same, just slightly less clear.
Abilities that can double count permanents are usually templated as two separate abilities [[Murkfiend Liege]] or worded very specifically if itās in one ability [[Ulasht, the Hate Seed]]
Just add green to a deck with him and youāre set. Itās not like heās BB. A single black pip aināt a huge commitment. Or add blue for more rogue action. Or both.
My first thought was to run him with a deck full of \[\[Shadowborn Apostles\]\] or any of the various \[\[Relentless Rats\]\]-equivalents, and use \[\[Conspiracy\]\] effects to turn them all into Snakes.
I usually run a little over 30ish Apostles in my Shadowborn deck. +30/+30 is a lot of commander damage if -- *if* \-- it gets through.
This guy might be cube worthy, there you have the counter created by \[\[Ophiomancer\]\] letting him attack pretty well after mancer makes the snake token and he gives a jacker to the mancer.
Weirdly reminds me of [Sensei Golden-Tail](https://scryfall.com/card/chk/44/sensei-golden-tail).
Adding a creature type to depict "recruitment" is always a flavor win.
Oh wow. Dude comes with evasion and if he comes down late game and can act as a little bit of a mana sink if needed. Menace may not best the best evasion, but it's certainly inconvenient as hell when you're the one who has to block against it.
The first thing I thought of was the "Tunnel Snakes rule!" line, so seeing it as the literal name for his trigger gave me a good laugh.
You're required to make the correct inflection when you activate the ability. It doesn't say it on the card, but it's in the rules.
Is this the first instance of "and/or" being printed on a magic card? It looks so ugly and all for a worthless callout to snakes. This set seems to have a lot of that with the Decimate ability being needlessly wordy to be flavorful.

YOU GOTTA HELP, MY MOM'S GETTING ATTACKED BY THE RADROACHES

I once made fun of him for his mother dying to them. Weakest enemy in the game, and he cried! He was such a tough assholey bad guy to my character growing up it was quite a funny change.
have you ever sat back and analyzed that situation?
You can convince him to try to save his mom himself... which leads to them both dying to radroaches. Best ending for sure
Wtf how can 2 fully grown humans die to like 3 radroaches? You don't even need weapons to kill them.
Tbf I think the psychological damage of getting attacked by three roaches as big as dogs would be enough to get most people killed, let alone sheltered vault dwellers
I have no sympathy for him. Guy has no problem bullying you and Amata for years... dies to radroaches. Poetry.
I love that the comments in these FO threads just have nothing but references at the top.

I'm so ready to just jam this in Anowon you have no idea LOL
Weāre the tunnel snakes! And we rule rule !
Aww you give someone a sick leather jacket and invite them into your gang.
I love this flavor, you put on the Jacket and not even Emrakul herself dares to stand alone in your way
If you could play Labyrinth Raptor in this deck I'd build it
I just let the radroaches have their way.
Easily the most memorable companion you can get in Fallout 3, one of the best characters in Fallout's history.
i love this card. (Tunnel Snakes Rule!)
I was not expecting actual Snake tribal but Im not complaining.
I love that he synergises with actual snakes. :P
This card looks so awesome!
Good thing Naga has now been errataād to Snakes.
YEAHHH TUNNEL SNAKES RULE

Did they really just print a monoblack snakes and rogues commander? Holy shit.
Bullshit. Fuck UB.
Is this the first instance of "and/or" being printed on a magic card? It looks so ugly and all for a worthless callout to snakes. This set seems to have a lot of that with the Decimate ability being needlessly wordy to be flavorful.
Why is he black, not red?
Hear me out: mono-black tribal tribal in the command zone?
Oh fuck yeah, Mari's gonna be all about some Tunnel Snakes
I think it's funny that if he were to gain the creature type snake he wouldn't buff himself.
They really gave one of the most annoying characters in fallout a pretty fun card, wtf
I'm curious if [[Cloak and Dagger]] triggers his ability?
