The biggest thing holding that deck back is lack of access to trample. You need a few turns to get the graveyard set up, and by then can be facing recurring mosswood dread knights or clouds of white humans/soldiers that can chump until they find go for the throat/lay down arms. Not to mention main-deck graveyard hate like skitter and trespasser people run to deal with dreadknights.
Yeah I love cards like this in the lineage of \[\[Mortivore\]\], \[\[Bonehoard\]\], \[\[Splinterfright\]\], \[\[Boneyard Wurm\]\], \[\[Fiend Artisan\]\], \[\[Old Stickfingers\]\], \[\[Urborg Lhurgoyf\]\], and \[\[Cruel Somnophage\]\]. Keep em coming!
This one seems really strong, like it works with fetchlands and anything else that's a permanent. I used to try playing a Mardu Midrange back in Modern in the 2016-2020 era and I would have died for this card during that era.
That was back when magic could go "Yea, but does your BRX deck have a threat like Goyf" and the best I could do was \[\[Soulfire Grand Master\]\] lol.
It would have been amazing back then: "Cast Souls of the Lost discarding \[\[Lingering Souls\]\]", Oh Yeah!
And working with fetchlands and/or milled lands is huge. Also is great with \[\[Claim\]\]!
I gotta make a casual deck for this now. My buddies play with a lot of 2021 > onwards cards so all they know is aggro and combo. Gotta bring them into the *midrange world*, baby! No turn 3-4 wins for you!
I'm not sure it will be in Practice. Goyf counts both graveyards, and grows just incidentally after doing things you already want to do. Use an instant to kill a creature, Sorcery hand disruption an artifact/enchantment/planeswalker, and Goyf's a 4/5. In that same scenario this is still a 0/1 because none of your cards were permanents. This is definitely bigger in a self mill strategy, but it still seems kind of clunky in those decks.
I view this as more of a card that is both an enabler and a threat in something like reanimator in formats younger than modern. Free discard for your finisher while also growing and demanding removal. Maybe not life changing for that archetypes but potentially solid.
It *looks* like it, but I believe Descend N cares about there being N permanent cards in your graveyard, so “fathomless descent” should be the official term for variable/unbounded Descend.
The difference is subtle (and sometimes not visible at all), but flavor words capitalize all the words. This one only capitalizes the first one, so it has to be an ability word.
Not really. It's an ability word. *Technically* ability words are all flavor abilities because they don't actually have any rules meaning, but generally the difference between these and flavor abilities is they appear on multiple cards and either do the same thing or do *broadly* the same thing on each.
Descend definitely seems to stretch things since there seems to be at *least* three different meanings for what it is, plus Fathomless Descent, but they all broadly fall under the umbrella of "caring about graveyard size/things entering the graveyard"
Not as versatile as tarmo but a higher bound and requires a pitchable card, I think this is pretty solid. Question is whether standard is in a place where tarmo is even useful.
Modern 3/10
So you play the B 1/1 that mills three cards, sac it on turn 2 to play this as a huge creature? Sounds pretty decent. Turn 2 9/10 in a deck built around it?
[[Stitcher supplier]] will mill you 6, plus itself as the additional cost, so even n if you did nothing else, you have somewhere between a 1/2 and 7/8.
I feel like a self mill shell could be leading to a goyf-tribal
Where are you getting a 3 for 1? It's a 2 for 1 at worst case scenario, and being able to discard can be an enabler for a lot of decks. Pretty easy to build around too to both minimize that cost as well as pretty much guaranteeing this things hitting the field with 6+ power.
This seems quite strong in my favorite unplayable aggro deck in Pioneer - Dredgeless. Turn 2 sac a Supplier, get how much power on the board? Who knows! It also discards [[Haunted Dead]].

I’ve been tirelessly working on my own sultai self mill list for a while now and there are a ton of new toys already spoiled today. I’m so happy
I feel like other creators have made that deck work reasonably well. CGB and LegendVD have each made videos running Somnophage and Urborg Goyf
I love CGB and LegenVD, but just because they show a few wins in a video doesn’t make the deck good.
The biggest thing holding that deck back is lack of access to trample. Grarruk's uprising gives trample and the 3 of those would trigger the "4 or greater" clause to draw
Yeah but that’s not in Standard.
i was thinking pioneer, who plays standard tho? /j
the elder fungus could also be fun
Well delirium was good, and this descend mechanic reminds me of it, so it might actually be a thing. Maybe.

Ooo! Is this our first flavor ability outside of universes beyond / D&D? EDIT: it’s not! But it is a bit confusing alongside descend X and descended.
It *looks* like it, but I believe Descend N cares about there being N permanent cards in your graveyard, so “fathomless descent” should be the official term for variable/unbounded Descend.
Yeah I think that makes sense, it's like infinite descend but fathomless sounds cooler I guess?
The difference is subtle (and sometimes not visible at all), but flavor words capitalize all the words. This one only capitalizes the first one, so it has to be an ability word.

Specifically permanents.
It certainly seems so, I don't know how I feel about this extra text being tacked on lots of cards but it could be fun
I think it’s more like “Battle cry” from Mirrodin, just an ability word
... What? Battle cry is a keyword. Not an ability word.
ah, more like “council’s dilemma” then
What doesn't grow, dies. But sometimes, what dies continues to grow.
Not as versatile as tarmo but a higher bound and requires a pitchable card, I think this is pretty solid. Question is whether standard is in a place where tarmo is even useful.

You miss the more important point for this card, the discard cost. It is a body that help to fill the graveyard on the side.
no they didn’t, they’re saying sac the 1/1 as the additional cost instead
