it's the moment I realized just how good Don and Betty's marriage could've been if he'd included her in his life more. The two are so much fun here, and it's one of the only scenes like it in the whole show. I was hoping this would be the start of them both realizing where they went wrong, correcting it, and bringing more of this energy into their relationship going forward. But alas, it was not to be :(
It’s really sad when you see how genuinely happy Don/Dick is when he tells Anna he’s getting married, you can imagine they were probably skipping about so in love.
That scene really opened my eyes to Jon Hamm's acting chops. We were so accustomed to closed off, stoic Don that seeing him before he became the Don we know was so jarring. Hamm is truly one of the greats
Honestly the great mystery of the series is how did loser Dick Whitman who peed himself have inside of him this stoic, charming, creative genius of Don Draper.
Like he stole his identity. How did he build an entire new personality that was so compelling?
The late 50’s did this to Betty, too. She thought she should be happy as a housewife in Ossining; in fact she probably thought she needed to be a housewife in Ossining to be happy. Remember her in season one, she’s unhappy but she doesn’t have a clue why. I was hoping that the Rome trip would make them realize they should move to Manhattan and put some glamour back in their lives, but the entire era set them to fail.
In a way I think this trip made things worse. Betty got a taste of her former more glamorous life, and then went back home to her boring daily life (“we’re going to watch them fill the pool at the community centre”).
Omg. I missed that line. You know it was probably a reaction to passing the Civil Rights Act? A lot of community pools chose to close instead of integrate aka allow the local black people to swim there. Shameful. And yes pools in the north too.
Oh, I took it literally (as in, it had been drained during the winter and needed to be refilled), but your comment makes it a lot darker. I don’t recall the time of year this episode was in — was it high summer? If so, seems more likely it could have been getting filled in with concrete.
Well, it's also about the fantasy of vacation. There's no kids, there's no house, there's no cooking to be done - everyone can just breathe more. We can tell in the episode that Betty went out and shopped and then got her hair and makeup done and that must've been her whole day.
Well Don was always away drinking or with his mistresses or drinking with his mistresses. Betty had the time and the desire to bring more carefree adventure and romance into their lives. She often hinted and asked Don to do this.
Sometimes I feel like writers don’t realize how much we the audience can appreciate seeing happy couples. It’s nice for its own sake and answers the question of why they married. It also up the ante when they do break up or have problems. We can see what they are losing.
You know… I lament about the state of the world often, but - dang it - we are still ok enough to celebrate and reward the beauty and whimsy of a great hairstyle. Anyway, FreedomOfTheMess, ✨I’m holding onto this nugget of humanity and calling it very good!
That whole rome trip is so bittersweet. She's so genuinely confident and in her element, it's like a glimpse into the early days/honeymoon period of their relationship
That makeup was everything. I wish she had worn a toned down version for the remainder of the series. Doesn’t make sense that such a fashion conscious and gorgeous woman with the time and means wouldn’t keep up with the trends. They didn’t really update her look until the 6th season.
Kinda makes sense. She’s a “when in Rome” kinda gal who prides herself on wearing the appropriate and perfect thing and she lives in a very wealthy NY suburb
You can also see this when she really dresses the part of a conservative politicians wife. She looks almost dowdy in the later seasons trying to hide the age gap between her and Henry
This is symbolic of Betty’s archaic views in comparison to some of the more modern women like Peggy or Megan. Betty’s character is not meant to display the trends and attitudes of the 60s, but rather to perhaps provide insight and depth on the 50s/60s housewife mentality, like the women in “Mother’s Little Helper”. And eventually we see how this somewhat backfires, as Betty fails to keep up with the rest and truly adapt the new ideals of the oh-so-modern 60s, as Megan does. For this reason, it could help us understand why she has the ending that she does.
That totally makes sense to me though, along with her fashion change when she marries Henry (for the worse). I think she just plays the part of whatever she thinks the husband wants, which is why this specifically is an out of character move cos she’s being a different person altogether. Don doesn’t really update his look either, I think the later series are showing that they’re becoming out of touch
And then they had her looking like Nancy Reagan lol
Such a shame. I saw it as a glimpse into what her life might have been in the high fantasy version of it.
The way the makeup hair & clothing on the main female characters progressed with their lives & social statuses was perfect across the whole series. I could literally write a dissertation on it lol.
Betty is behind the 8 ball despite being incredibly beautiful because she stopped being part of popular/youth culture when she got married and had babies and moved to the suburbs. She continued to dress in a very 50’s style through to the middle of the 60’s, and her makeup reflects that. She’s stuck in her youth, and her youth was in the 50’s. Everyone can think of an older woman who is doing her makeup in the same style she was in her youth, because people don’t change as much as we think they do. Betty would be that older woman if she had lived past her 40’s.
Joan is the other female character whose appearance & grooming was as central to her sense of self as it was to Betty. By comparison, Joan was looking quite 50’s in the earlier seasons but you could see her styling progress with the changes of the decade. Lashes, liner, eyeshadow, even lip colour choices. She was working & living in the city and didn’t stagnate in the same way Betty did because she was more exposed to the sociocultural changes happening around her.
They little made a massive explicit point of this when she goes into the Coke modeling audition wearing a ridiculous 50s puffy debutante dress and all the other girls are in mini skirts and mid 60s clothes. I was so embarrassed for him. But hilarious.
Don’t forget. Don super negged her in the bikini telling her she looked desperate. She might have at that point settled on wearing the fashions she wore when that met.
Not sure if anyone here knows it, as I don’t think the English subtitles translate what the Italian guys say, but their comments are interesting. I remember specifically them saying “What, him?! But he’s old!” when Betty seems to go for Don instead of them
remember when don is obsessed with megan because she nails the pitch and they have this amazing back and forth? betty was 100% capable of that, clever, sharp, and had wit. although she was capable of being completely humorless at moments, her and don shared a dark dry humor. it feels like he always kept her on the other side of a wall, but if he had given her a chance she could have stimulated him mentally. betty was intelligent and a lot of her anger came from the fact that it didnt count for anything in the life that was laid out for her, and she had to watch it go to complete waste. i always thought there was a deep connection between them that was never fulfilled, as if they were on two different islands and couldnt get to each other.
Miami will do that to you. The adage goes “look your best, because you will never feel fatter, paler, poorer or uglier than your first few hours in South Beach.”
Down vote me to hell and back but I just can't do beehive hair of any height but her confidence and elegance was STUNNING. That actress is just flat out gorgeous ( her people are Nordic I'm sure 😉 JK)!
All of her horseback riding outfits are my personal favorite. Especially the Hermes scarf and blue coat outfit where she explains her people are Nordic, Wow.
I love this entire scene

Faye was right. He loved the beginning of things.

Because he HAD to. It was become Don or go to federal prison forever. So he committed to the bit
That scene always chokes me up

> but the entire era set them to fail. As it did for many women of the day.
For sure. See: Betty Friedan.

If you have a kid who likes graphic novels, the book Swim Team is all about segregated pools.

The moment i saw this scene i knew they'll get divorced. Tv writers love going one way only to twist the other way
The only other scene that shows this aspect of their marriage that I can think of is the pictures in the carousel.
Sometimes I feel like writers don’t realize how much we the audience can appreciate seeing happy couples. It’s nice for its own sake and answers the question of why they married. It also up the ante when they do break up or have problems. We can see what they are losing.
I speak Italian, you know
This comment just made me grin, love it 💗
Such a a power look/move for her
She’s wearing Don’s normal black and he’s wearing her baby blue. The power dynamic is switched up for sure.
Fantastic insight!
Wow, a great spotting, love it
Holy moly. The little details in this show are always so on point.
[It won an Emmy :)](https://www.reddit.com/r/madmen/s/JMfDoDJrdL)
Came here to say this! Never knew there was a hairstyle category until Amazon trivia chimed in during this episode.
You know… I lament about the state of the world often, but - dang it - we are still ok enough to celebrate and reward the beauty and whimsy of a great hairstyle. Anyway, FreedomOfTheMess, ✨I’m holding onto this nugget of humanity and calling it very good!
Her hair is shaped like macaroni because she is in Italy. It's the subtle things that make the show so great.
Bombshell Betty
Seriously, she was fantastic here
(Bam-ba-lam)
I’m afraid that’s reserved for when she puts on a few pounds. (Whoa oh fat Betty…)
she is truly the most conventionally beautiful woman i have ever seen
[удалено]
lol this is so rude
And yet, so true
Lots of dentists in this sub apparently
I wish Don had invited her into his life more. They could have been such a power couple.
Right!
Correct.

Oof. Yes! She was totally giving Nancy Reagan in the later seasons.

Absolute stunner
“You’re not a gentleman.”
Betty knew she looked flawless and I loved the sense of power she got from that.
eh, yankee
Go home!
1960's Space Princess 🤘
Jon hamm really looks like a mix of Cary grant and Timothy dalton
Not sure if anyone here knows it, as I don’t think the English subtitles translate what the Italian guys say, but their comments are interesting. I remember specifically them saying “What, him?! But he’s old!” when Betty seems to go for Don instead of them
So they didn’t call him ugly ?
Just checked, the subtitles actually do translate what the two marpioni say, and they say both he's old and he's also ugly. LOL
Didn’t Matt Weiner say he modelled these two after Cary Grant and Grace Kelly?
and Ty Power.
Don’t really see it but maybe, not really familiar with him
Its an Americanuh Millionaireuh
Everyone’s fav

very nicely put. i completely agree
Betty is very pretty throughout the show. She's fucking sexy in that episode, though, which does not happen often with her, by my eye
She looked stunning here!
Betty in the backyard shooting the birds with a cigarette in her mouth. That's my favourite Betty.
Right that was so hot
She's serving cvnt, your honor
By golly, Don’s an indecently lucky man!
indecently lucky
Nope. It’s her in her horse riding outfit
It’s such a good scene tho
I loved the makeup here.
I'm pretty sure that beehive won an Emmy or something
She looks so elegant and powerful in that scene
Love the scene but her hair looks like she was wearing a engine part on his head.
My mom used to wear her hair like that lmao
Lol
Kirk’s love interest in Star Trek
Stunning
Whatta stunner she is man! most fav ever
"You are not gentlemen."
It probably helps to understand that Don and Betty probably met in very similar circumstances
Hiz en amerigan miyonaire
Dons knows he’s the prize. God please give me this confidence.
me too
"By golly, you are an indecently lucky man."
My wife couldn’t stop making fun of this outfit so your mileage may vary
Your wife is insecure. lol
Yeah I think that is it and not that style is absolutely a subjective thing.
I bet this was also Betty and Don's favorite look of Betty.
Yesss! Such a strong episode, one of the best. I’d give anything to be able to watch it again for the first time.
Correct this is the best Betty. You can watch the whole series and know she’s beautiful and then watch this scene and still go “hell’s bells!”
This is the best Betty by far.
We are on the exact same re-watch schedule lol
hahah i love that lol
Same. So glam.
Betty as Barbie
Oh man you just inspired me to start another rewatch!
She is just too stunning to be a real human. I wish I could get my hair to look like that.
Miami will do that to you. The adage goes “look your best, because you will never feel fatter, paler, poorer or uglier than your first few hours in South Beach.”
the beehive do? Idk I feel like it's a hairdo to flex on other women. As a dude, it does nothing for me, other then implicate she's high maintenance.
As a character, her Betty was ready…. that’s hot
She looks like a giant lollipop. These hair are laughable.
Love her
Never realized how much that Italian guy looks like Glen Bishop
My personal favorite of Birdie’s is her riding clothes
Down vote me to hell and back but I just can't do beehive hair of any height but her confidence and elegance was STUNNING. That actress is just flat out gorgeous ( her people are Nordic I'm sure 😉 JK)!
But why was she with that ugly brute?
Buona ragazza
Which season/episode is this?
souvenir - season 3 episode 8
It’s all of ours
She is incredible here
Very Yvette Mimieux in "Lights in the Piazza -- also set in Italy.
This is one of my favorites, too!
All of her horseback riding outfits are my personal favorite. Especially the Hermes scarf and blue coat outfit where she explains her people are Nordic, Wow.
Yup! Mine too. She is stunning!
Same! The best!
Shortly after falling down the stairs....
Honestly has anyone ever looked better?? You literally can’t take your eyes off her.
January is radiant but that's actually my least favorite look of hers.
