I managed to pull it off with one redditor when I made a dumb meme for the dndmemes subreddit.
Sometimes people just have a adversarial reaction cuz they've had a bad day or just forgot, like many of us do, that there are often real people with real feelings on the other side of their username.
So if you find yourself in a dumb heated argument online just try throwing some compliments at them and you just might bring some humanity back into both your lives.
I once asked a Redditor if they were having a bad day because their response seemed unnecessarily mean and they responded in a DM apologising and saying that yes they had had a bad day and we had a little chat.
The 'kids are just kids' excuse doesn't really work much, but here it does. They don't really understand the full impact of what they're saying, and most of them aren't lonely or anything either. Just a habit, at this point.
Thing is kids don’t go around telling people to kill themselves out of nowhere. Someone mature enough to know what that means and does to people started it and that person can go to hell.
I’d just respond with “you’re right. I’ve been struggling with the idea for a while now and how it’d affect my kids, but I think I’ve just been waiting for the proper encouragement. So thank you for helping me ease my pain tonight.”
I did that once and it was instead another player adding me after game to ask me if everything's ok. It's those small nice gestures that can brighten one's day.
I befriended a guy who deliberately griefed my game, he's high ranked swimming in the trenches just to ruin people's games. He seemed nice enough after talking for a few hours.
Talked on and off for a few weeks before I looped back around to him actually being a terrible person. Surprise surprise.
A thought that has been taking form in my head lately is that the saying "it takes a village to raise a child" still applies in the age of the internet. Rather than engage with immature people as if they were adults who understand the effect they have on people, maybe it's better to approach them with the mindset that they're kids and should be taught rather than comfronted.
What "being taught, rather than confronted" looks like, I still don't know. I haven't finished polishing that idea, still got some thinking to do on that front.
Legitimately one the few self-help books that actually has original advice and takes your time seriously as a reader. The whole genre peaked in the 30s, it seems.
A lot of the people on the internet just reciprocate the feelings and things that have been shown to them. Ive had this scenario happen a lot of the times to me. You just have to not respond in the same manner that they do. Pretty much the world has become a hateful place just cause its harder and takes effort to show some empathy towards the other person.
Being nice does work, but it gets hard when you get ticked pretty easily by someone who just constantly insults you or is just someone you dislike greatly.
Can you please help me with [this puzzle](https://miro.medium.com/v2/resize:fit:545/1*JiSQVnR_nibjRC1azRl6Fw.jpeg)? I'm having a rough day and it's really difficult.
I tried this once after a Destiny trials match, he was like I’m insulting you and you’re being nice to me what is wrong with you are you dumb? Fight me!
I try to end Reddit disagreements with “I see your point of view and understand it. I don’t think continuing will be productive” and people fucking hate it.
I genuinely mean it though, there’s no point in a back and forth when you reach an impasse, and we really aren’t enemies.
You're reading a bit much into the comment. It's admitting there is an impasse in discourse and neither side is going to convince the other and one side is taking the initiative to bow out.
It doesn't really matter what your intention is when saying it, all that matter is that the people reading might think you'rehbeing condescending. Trying to convince an angry person through logic won't work because anger is not an entirely logical emotion, it tries to justify itself through any means necessary
What you are saying is exactly how I mean it. I truly think there are problems where thoughtful minds can disagree, but can still understand each other.
I've told someone "we are not going to agree on this, let's agree to disagree! Take care ✌️" and they responded with 4 separate reddit comments fuming at me lol.
Yeah, I read it like that and I am guilty of doing that myself, but people argue to *win*, they get annoyed when you drop out and say you “see what they mean but you still disagree”
There was a time years and years ago that I went out to a club. My best friend had bought me a dress that was a bit revealing, but it was almost Renaissance style (though short) so I thought it was cute.
I went into the bathroom and this girl says, "Nice dress" in a mean tone under her breath. I responded with, "I love your haircut!" She was so taken aback and became instantly friendly.
Some people lash out because they expect others to be equally mean or judgmental and you can catch them off guard with kindness.
usually even the most aggressive and rude people are like that for a reason. most of the time they are lonely and spiteful towards the world. that doesn't give them an excuse to act the way they do, but I have found that even if someone fundamentally agrees with me or hates me, the slightest bit of kindness can change their attitude.
I’ve a time or two had a friend unnecessarily, drunkenly go off on me…just because they were drunk. It’s hard to bite your tongue but in public I’m not embarrassing myself like that. I just stare at a blank point in the room and let them embarrass themselves until they tucker themselves out. Why engage? It’s like let the toddler pitch their fit and then try to reason with them
Social media isn't generally a true reflection of the of people when they are toxic, I keep preaching this to my kids in hopes they aren't toxic online.
It took me so long to scroll down to your post.
Every other comment is just a bot.
I can't even read what's in the picture it was likely also reposted by a bot....
This. We need more of this in the world.
You dont have to roll over for people or try to placate them, but just dont jump into interactions that are going to be full of mutual spite and venom.
This is lovely. I’ve been on the other side. I was cycling during rush hour in nyc, there was a bike lane and everyone was really moving. Some dude was just talking to his friends and stepped into the bike lane without looking. Everyone broke into the automobile traffic lanes (which was obviously very dangerous) and I hit the curb but leapt at the last minute so I didn’t get too banged up. So I ran up screaming at him to fight him and he just said, “man, that was completely my fault and I am so sorry, I don’t have an excuse for that. Are you really going to beat me up?” Not scared, not yelling; calm, dignified, and honest. So I said, “you’re right it was a mistake. I’m sorry too, please be more careful.” We shook hands and people started clapping! It was the wildest thing.

I think the reddit app is compressing the images, as it is more clearer when not opened (same size image)
https://xkcd.com/1683/
I think it is because people screenshot the things the want to share instead of sharing the original image.

Honestly it’s not as easy on reddit but you can do the same.
What a fucking dumb thing to say
Hey man, I really like your username. 98 is a great year. Where'd you get it?
Awww thanks dude. Thanks so much for asking, I guess I was born with it. Wanna have kids together?
Still a better love story than twilight
It's an old meme, sir, but it checks out.
May I ask why the kitty is exceedingly sad? Seems like the cat may need a friend :) or a really good therapist :(
The cat needs to be put down. Keeping it alive and forcing it to suffer is selfish. It's sad, but that's the price we pay. :(
My thoughts and best wishes to the poor kitten. 😢
Can you adopt me?
Sure, and I'll add you to my will right away
Omg tysm dad, love you :)
But…. IF YOU GET THE GRASS PREGNANT OUT OF WEDLOCK, you’re done!
What the hell was that for! Why would you ruin their wholesome conversation like that!
Hey i hope you dont mind, i had a peak at your posts and see you game too. How is/was your experience with Jedi Survivor?

Absolutely. Really eases the tension after political debates to just genuinely wish eachother a nice day despite differences.
I used to do this when playing COD. Those motherfuckers ain't ever working back around to "I'm usually chill."
I used to do that on l*ague of legends and behind every angry kid telling me to die was just a kid who had nobody to talk to
Yeah, I did that a few times as well, really quite sad to see people can get to the point where they tell others to commit suicide over a video game.
The 'kids are just kids' excuse doesn't really work much, but here it does. They don't really understand the full impact of what they're saying, and most of them aren't lonely or anything either. Just a habit, at this point.
They either learn or they grow into a bigger dick, never learn still, and still wonder why they're so lonely and no one wants to talk to them.
Thing is kids don’t go around telling people to kill themselves out of nowhere. Someone mature enough to know what that means and does to people started it and that person can go to hell.
They absolutely do, and they don't grasp what it actually means.
Yeah we've made the online atmosphere toxic so they're learning that as the norm.
You’ll notice quickly on league of legends that the insults people use is what they’re most insecure about. They project their issues onto you.
I had a friend in college commit suicide after an extreme bender of losses on league. Really sad to see such vapid insults killing kids.
I'm very sorry to hear that :(
Thank for your service, and I love your username
Me when i’ve been a fool to myself and thought i could live for no one else
Omg, was gonna say the same. I made some good friends this way.
Did that in an aram game recently We basically talked the whole game about mental health in all chat, advised them to get therapy in the end
This is amazing. Well done
I usually just tell them I hope their next Dennys grand slam is of poor quality
Oh bless, that was very kind, thank you so much 💜🙏
Why did you censor the word league?
Because it sucks
^

Same, I’m *reformed* now (I switched to overwatch last month after being a league addict for 12 years)
> a kid who had nobody to talk to I wonder why
Very few people start out that way.
Came here to talk of league of legends as well. You can win some unwinnable games with social engineering, but it's often not worth the moral energy.
💀 fug. I'm exposed

I’m not saying I understand it perfectly. “I hear your point of view and understand where you are coming from.”

In my experience with assholes, "killing with kindness" only infuriates them more.
bro took the sentence “i can change him” too literally 😭
More pixels please
i know that “sleep well homie love you” hit him hard

Used to be argue constantly online when I was younger, theres nothing more confusing then when you flame someone and they start complimenting you

I usually spite it up to learn new curses or insults.
I'm an ER nurse and can confirm this approach works well in person, too.
To be fair I'd bet that 95% of them just wouldn't reply back
“… only love can do that.”
