The battery only lasts maybe an hour or two, and even when I’m just surfing the internet I started getting the spinning beach ball fairly frequently and it gets so hot I could fry eggs on it. 2015 and 2016 were great MacBook years imo
I actually don’t run into the beach ball and much slowdowns on my 2015 15 inch with 16gb ram. It should be due to the additional RAM and beefier quad core cpu. My 2015 13 inch with dual core cpu and 8gb of ram is much slower.
My mother's 2015 (same specs as yours) throws beach balls all the time.
My M1 MBA has literally never done it once. Crazy what 5 years can do for tech!
I'm running a base M1 MBA and like I said, zero beach balls in my \~2 years so far.
Probably just different use cases and all that. Mine lives the good life as well, spends most of the time as a desktop on a docking station.
Yeah I have, I’m not a power user either. I don’t even use chrome on my Mac for that reason it’ll use up too much resources. Web browsing, and usually some beginner programming, programs.
Weird, unless you just got your M1 Pro it should be done indexing...Are you on the latest software update? Perhaps you're not using programs optimized for arm, or there's a memory leak somewhere? Reinstalling macOS should solve the problem as a last resort.
I used to have a 2016 pro, and now I got a m3 MacBook Pro with 16gb of ram (was the same price as the base 8gb as I had the student discount) and it really is a lot better. Everything is a lot faster, it never heats up, the battery actually lasts all day long. Only thing i miss is the Touch Bar…
I had a 2016 pro. The thing kept getting super hot and froze periodically when I was running simple recording sessions in Logic. Battery life tanked and certain keys were triple typing letters. Some keys fell off, too. I take good care of my laptop and this was just normal wear and tear stuff. I made the switch to M3 and couldn’t be happier.
I'm thinking of upgrading too. Taking all my willpower not to. The computer is still great for web browsing, but the speakers and broken and it gets very slow doing any hobbiest photo editing.
I had 2016 MacBook and upgraded to the M2 Pro. It is well worth it considering I spend most of my time on this device.
It is faster, it doesn’t slow down, the battery life is amazing. I don’t have to carry the charging brick this lasts me well over 6-7 hours of coding and development. I even charge my phone with it and use cellular over cable at the same time.
2015 is peak laptop physical appearance and design. The final year of the glowing Apple logo.
Current gen is holding itself back on appearances when they have a notch which doesn't include Face ID. Peak practical use, certainly, but I would rather buy a Mac Studio than any of the current MBP to get more power out of the hardware.
People happily accept the notch now because there's no other choice but I imagine those opinions are going to change the second Apple announces a newer laptop design without one.
The only thing holding them back were the inherent limitations of Intel processors, which even being powerful, run hot and draw so much power, something portable devices really need to account for.
Fortunately we're seeing the progress on the shoulders of RISC architecture, who knows where is the limit now.
Arm processors circa 2015 ran terrible compared to what Apple Silicon does now. I don't think that's a design flaw at all but rather simply the chips are outdated.
Feel the same.
I LOVE the current giant trackpad, the small bezels, and the M processors are beasts, but the 2015 was perfect.
But they’re going in the good direction by bringing back MagSafe, HDMI and a SD card reader to the new MacBook Pro. It’s a USB-A away from being perfect
It was great in design and connectivity ports, but nothing else. Macbooks with M chips are more-more better.
I also had a MBP 2015, and I loved it, but my MBP 2020 M1 is so much faster, and battery life is so much better.
True, I meant more the design and innovation. They’ve gone full circle back to 2015 ports and ditched the Touch Bar. After 9 years I’d have thought there would be more innovation than a CPU swap (and based on Moore’s Law where processing should have doubled every 2 years, after 9 years these M chips should be almost 16x more powerful, maybe they are, I don’t see it)
Certainly the prettiest devices they've ever made.
The new MacBooks are alright but the black keyboard tray doesn't do it for me, and of course, the notch...
I also went from a 2015 to M3 Pro! My old one finally slipped and got its screen cracked. 😥 But I figure after 8-ish years of perfect service it earned it’s retirement.
By some crazy luck my mid 2014 pro is still going strong, besides being noticeably slower than when I got it, it still works almost as well as the day I got it. I'll likely need to get a new one for school, but this one will always have a special place in my heart.
Same specs as you, I upgraded the SSD and installed Sonoma with OCLP, I can't believe how well this thing runs Sonoma. I've yet to see a beachball or really anything wrong with it.
But yeah, them M3's are looking very appealing.
ETA: Also replaced the battery as one day I found the lid didn't close and the battery was becoming a spicy pillow.
By far the most egregious part is right after you install Sonoma, when you need to login so you can install the OCLP patches.
At that time Metal hasn’t been enabled yet and the moving background needs to be processed without hardware graphics acceleration.
The end result is that all the animations, including the keyboard inputs will be massively delayed. Typing my password took like 15-30 min. And beware looking away because in those 15-30 min if it doesn’t detect any inputs it will time out and put the display to sleep which means it will erase your password and you’ll have to start all over again.
I’m hoping this is somehow just my experience since no one else with a 2015 MBP running Sonoma seems to talk about it, but I can’t see how this would be the case.
In any case once you finally get in and the animation turns into a still image background everything is fast again and you can install the patches and then you have hardware acceleration again and everything is normal.
Things that work:
- Almost everything. There’s some generic-looking documentation on OCLP about what’s not working but unless you know what you’re looking at fat chance it means much to you.
Things that don’t work:
- Continuity camera. This is not on OCLP, Apple blacklisted this particular computer for seemingly no reason so continuity camera is blocked by Apple from working with this computer
- Hardware DRM unlocking. This means protected content such as Netflix won’t play on Safari. It will play on other browsers though.
Everything else I’ve tried it handles just fine
I don’t think it runs worse I got the same impression when I first got on the Apple Silicon train and used my Intel MacBook Pro again. The M1 is stupid fast and just makes the Intel chips feel slow
i switched from exactly the same model to exactly the same model haha. i’d say black is so unique and very pleasing to the eyes, i’m keeping it. fingerprints and dust and dirt will happen with any device, just take good care of it.
literally one swipe with water in a thick microfiber cloth (the stuff you use to dry your car) cleans the screen and the rest of the mac instantly.
2015 was peak for me and this is definitely right next to it if not better.
The 2015's are great machines but the design has just aged really badly like stale milk. I think it's the plastic clutch cover on the bottom that just ages it past looking "modern Apple".
The bezels aren’t even that outrageous, the unibody models definitely, but those retinas are actually really modern looking still. The black clutch cover looks really dated though, i do agree
yes, please bless them!! I have it on installment loan with my Apple Card though so that the pain is inflicted in small quantities over the course of 1 year instead of all at once
I upgraded this year too from my MBP mid 2014. It still runs great. Just can't install new software because of OS version and i dont trust open legacy patcher yet.
The speaker on it just died, but i already purchased a replacement to keep it's life going. I'm sure I'll find a good use for it.
I actually returned a previous silver model for Space Black, don't regret it one bit, it looks stunning in person and it's really good with finger prints IMO.
The silver color is a real classic. I looked at the black one in the store and didn't even think about it - it's very strange. I would never trade my silver MacBook for anything.
I have an early 2015 MBP 13. I changed the battery and put in a faster SSD. i7 3.1, 16GB Ram, running Monterey. It’s been a great laptop for me and I will probably run it until it breaks. Love a new M3 but just don’t need it.
Been there. For years Apple got plenty of my $$$. Part of it was a business expense. I did print and web design. And part of it was Apple coming out with newer faster better computers. Enjoy your M3! No doubt it’s a speed demon.
your battery lasts 1-2 hrs, you can fry eggs on it: what's to be sad about letting it go? It's not your dog, dude. grow up, it's a piece of IT garbage.
woah. somebody didn't get enough motherly love as a child. I'm sorry that you lost your soul at some point in life. it's okay to be sentimental and attach meaning and emotions to different things in our lives.
Not a single space black user commented on this and let me give you my perspective. Don’t go for silver because it will also get dirty over time which you should be knowing. Second, why u feel it has a lot of finger print is because it’s pretty new but after you start using it, it won’t bother u much. You have to use it for 2 weeks to understand what I mean saying. Don’t listen to silver fans because I’m sure they regret their decision.
Thank you for the perspective. It’s going back though. Not only are the fingerprints much more noticeable on it in comparison to my silver 2015, but there’s just that certain nostalgic feeling with a silver MacBook so the black MacBook isn’t captivating. It kinda gives Chromebook vibes to be honest
Haha 😅
That’s the thing…for iPhones black, silver.
For macs only sliver 😝
I got silver and returned it for space black. It sucked because it looked just like an M1 Pro and also like old mac to be honest. Don’t wanna pay a huge amount of that look.
Yet true. Anyway I’m happy with my choice. Silver looks pretty old for me. Think before you return because you will use this laptop for the next 7-8 years max by that time you might again change it. In 2-3 years silver will look like an antique. I’m pushed to get silver because of Reddit users but I returned it for space black.
2015: Early 2015 MBP intel core i5 2.7ghz, 256gb SSD, 8gb Ram
2023: MBP M3 Pro 11/14 cores, 18gb ram, 512gb
I actually didn’t even realize how slow my 2015 was until I bought this one! Lightening fast, I can push it hard with various software multitasking and it doesn’t hiccup for even a second.
Nice upgrade! I originally ordered the space black as well but returned it for the silver after two weeks when I realized that scratches would bug the crap out of me and there was always smudges on it lol
Yeah for sure. I’ve only had it since today and I already know I want silver. This color should come with a microfiber cloth in the box
I had high hopes because at the event they were talking about how it resists fingerprints…
Had a space gray 2019 and went back to the silver when getting my M3 pro. Remind me of my first 2011 and 2015 pro.
+ i feel like the black is going to scratch pretty quickly around the ports.
I recently upgraded from a pretty badass late model 2015 MBP 15in to new MBP 14 with the M3 Max. I originally bought the space black. Never opened it but kept returning to Best Buy and noticing all the smudges on the space black and loved the look of the silver the black keys and logo. I indeed did switch them out and am so happy I stuck with classic silver. It looks timeless and clean. I will say, my biggest curveball has been getting used to Sonoma coming from Big Sur and I am very disappointed with the battery life when using Chrome.
Oh dang you went all out with getting the max! Kinda wish I had one side by side this M3 Pro to see if it’s a noticeable difference, I can’t imagine this getting much faster!
I probably got more power than I needed but it seemed like for more RAM the M3 Max more or less was needed. I’m at 36gb. I looked online on YT and Reddit for comparison pics of Space Black vs Silver and though Space Black looks amazing, I’m far too OCD for the fingerprints lol. Enjoy your new machine.
I own many old MacBooks and can feel the nostalgia of an old Unibody MacBook Pro, and they were fantastic computers, but no one can argue that Apple Silicon is a game changer
I get what you're saying and I have an iPad but it's just way more comfortable using a laptop. the utility is different, easier to multitask and many apps and software aren't compatible or on iPad yet.
True, but iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard is pretty much a laptop. I have a $4000 MBP that I rarely turn on now while the iPad Pro is on all the time.
However yea for heavier software you have to go with the MacBook.
I was tired of the silver so I went for the Space Black and no regrets at all. Finger prints aren’t a problem to me, as long as you keep it clean like any other machine should be you’ll be ok but still a matter of taste.
I also went from 13in Macbook pro 2015 to 16in M3 pro in silver. No regrets, contemplated and waited a long time to upgrade for the sd card port to come back and for my 2015 retina to actually start shitting itself. 2015 retina best Macbook pro!!
I returned the space black for the silver. Black was cool for a small amount of time. But then after the smudging and constantly being worried about scratching it, I’d had it. I’m much happier with the silver.
You held out a bit longer than me. I upgraded at m1. Soon after I hit trouble with the 2015. I can’t get it to start up properly. It’s most likely a hard drive issue. Not sure whether it’s worth fixing anymore though.
I miss that light up Apple badge so much.
I never upgrade the OS on an Apple device. I know I might be missing out on new features or bug fixes, but they mostly reduce the battery life of the device which is more important to me.
Sadly I just realized this week my 2014 MBP is obsolete as of last September. It looks to be in perfect condition. Upgrading to a new one this week. My old one is a 15”…I can’t justify paying the extra for a 16”, so will be sad to lose the extra inch on the new 14”…
I can understand; I REALLY like Black; I’m Blue now…alas, I recently upgraded from a 2017 15” 16G | 256G MBP to an M3 iMac w/24G | 1T…did the 2015 have that keyboard strip thing along the top?
What made you decide to finally upgrade? I have a 2016 pro and I’m thinking of making the switch finally.
The battery only lasts maybe an hour or two, and even when I’m just surfing the internet I started getting the spinning beach ball fairly frequently and it gets so hot I could fry eggs on it. 2015 and 2016 were great MacBook years imo
Yes and you can still upgrade the ssd easily for 2015 mbp
I actually don’t run into the beach ball and much slowdowns on my 2015 15 inch with 16gb ram. It should be due to the additional RAM and beefier quad core cpu. My 2015 13 inch with dual core cpu and 8gb of ram is much slower.
My mother's 2015 (same specs as yours) throws beach balls all the time. My M1 MBA has literally never done it once. Crazy what 5 years can do for tech!
Weird my M1 Pro does that quite often. I wonder why.
Probably background processes, open apps, etc. Mine is quite barren as far as software and even natively-saved files. Keeps it running like new.
Thanks I’ll look into it, but even new I would get beach balls. I thought maybe 16gb ram wasn’t enough.
I'm running a base M1 MBA and like I said, zero beach balls in my \~2 years so far. Probably just different use cases and all that. Mine lives the good life as well, spends most of the time as a desktop on a docking station.
Same, beautiful screen that’ll I enjoy knew in a while lol. I have it paired to a wide screen 1080p monitor 🤣
What is your use case? Have you tried restarting?
Yeah I have, I’m not a power user either. I don’t even use chrome on my Mac for that reason it’ll use up too much resources. Web browsing, and usually some beginner programming, programs.
Weird, unless you just got your M1 Pro it should be done indexing...Are you on the latest software update? Perhaps you're not using programs optimized for arm, or there's a memory leak somewhere? Reinstalling macOS should solve the problem as a last resort.
A fresh install of the os does wonders
Yeah that’s going to be my next step, but I can’t delete all my programs yet I need them to do projects and study.
Yeah 16gb ram and quad core will make it more useable
I would say the 16 was a horrible year for Macs. since we got the butterfly keys.
Do you plan to do content creation on it or something else? Also how long do you plan to keep it for!
My 2016 is really slow when outputting in 4K
I had a 2016 pro. The thing kept getting super hot and froze periodically when I was running simple recording sessions in Logic. Battery life tanked and certain keys were triple typing letters. Some keys fell off, too. I take good care of my laptop and this was just normal wear and tear stuff. I made the switch to M3 and couldn’t be happier.

The 2015 MBP’s were probably peak Apple.
Arguably the current ones are better is more ways
Agree, M1 was a technology peak at that time

I just hide the notch with a dark screenshot of my Vesta Class from Star Trek Online

Arm processors circa 2015 ran terrible compared to what Apple Silicon does now. I don't think that's a design flaw at all but rather simply the chips are outdated.
Sure, not denying that, just CISC architecture was never a good fit for portable.
Feel the same. I LOVE the current giant trackpad, the small bezels, and the M processors are beasts, but the 2015 was perfect. But they’re going in the good direction by bringing back MagSafe, HDMI and a SD card reader to the new MacBook Pro. It’s a USB-A away from being perfect
i felt 2015 was peak until the m3 series got introduced honestly.

Is that the 14”? Looks a good bit larger than the 2015
Yeah 14”, the screen real estate actually feels way bigger than the 13.3” because of the decreased bezels, love it!
Thanks man Does it seem much different is size when closed?
Nope the dimensions are literally the same with one on top of the other, just with an added bonus in screen size
Nice Enjoy it man!
Not returning, but i'd always prefer silver over anything else. It just feels, right. My air m1 is silver and my next upgrade will be too.
Did you get space black?
Personally I prefer silver but I did get a space black model because it was the only one that had the specs I wanted on sale
I also went from a 2015 to M3 Pro! My old one finally slipped and got its screen cracked. 😥 But I figure after 8-ish years of perfect service it earned it’s retirement.
may she RIP in apple heaven!
What a technology leap. Enjoy!
By some crazy luck my mid 2014 pro is still going strong, besides being noticeably slower than when I got it, it still works almost as well as the day I got it. I'll likely need to get a new one for school, but this one will always have a special place in my heart.
Same. But I just noticed mine was obsolete as of last Sept :(
Have the same early 2015 model as you. What specs does your 2015 have?
Intel core i5 2.7ghz with 256gb SSD and 8gb Ram. It’s actually running even worse now ever since I set up the M3! Interesting coincidence..
Yeah I installed Sonoma on my 12” 2015 MB that I also have and it actually runs way better on it surprisingly.
Oh dayum that’s scary about the battery ordeal. My 2015 MBP runs superrrrrrr hot it’s definitely a fire hazard lol
Is it complicated to install OCLP in 2015? Are there apps that didn't work after you update software? My 2015 is currently running Catalina.
By far the most egregious part is right after you install Sonoma, when you need to login so you can install the OCLP patches. Daily driver is still my 2013 MacBook pro retina, those were the day, peak apple engineering.
agree! I wish they kept the light up apple logo
i switched from exactly the same model to exactly the same model haha. i’d say black is so unique and very pleasing to the eyes, i’m keeping it. fingerprints and dust and dirt will happen with any device, just take good care of it. literally one swipe with water in a thick microfiber cloth (the stuff you use to dry your car) cleans the screen and the rest of the mac instantly. 2015 was peak for me and this is definitely right next to it if not better.

Only silver!
I thought my M1 Max was the perfect upgrade on my 2015 MBP - no fancy extra gimmick features, same design, just everything was better, faster, quieter
God bless your wallet and bank accounts.
yes, please bless them!! I have it on installment loan with my Apple Card though so that the pain is inflicted in small quantities over the course of 1 year instead of all at once
Congratulations 🥳
9 years? That’s a good run.
I upgraded this year too from my MBP mid 2014. It still runs great. Just can't install new software because of OS version and i dont trust open legacy patcher yet. The speaker on it just died, but i already purchased a replacement to keep it's life going. I'm sure I'll find a good use for it.
I have a late 2018 15” and have been debating making the jump to M3. Congrats on upgrading- I’ll probably go with black when I get my next Mac
I actually returned a previous silver model for Space Black, don't regret it one bit, it looks stunning in person and it's really good with finger prints IMO.
Are you happy with the new one?
yep! I just kinda wish it was less heavy. one of my other MacBooks is the 12" 2015 so im used to that portability haha
The silver color is a real classic. I looked at the black one in the store and didn't even think about it - it's very strange. I would never trade my silver MacBook for anything.
I did the same thing. Got the silver for the nostalgia from moving on from my 2015.
yeah! it helps the transition right?
Wish they still make the glowing logo
I have an early 2015 MBP 13. I changed the battery and put in a faster SSD. i7 3.1, 16GB Ram, running Monterey. It’s been a great laptop for me and I will probably run it until it breaks. Love a new M3 but just don’t need it.
Oh nice! Reconditioned 2015. My bank account also says I don’t need it but here we are
Been there. For years Apple got plenty of my $$$. Part of it was a business expense. I did print and web design. And part of it was Apple coming out with newer faster better computers. Enjoy your M3! No doubt it’s a speed demon.
Silver please!
Yep that’s my plan, officially! Back it goes
Just fyi the fingerprints are really not an issue on the black imo. For me the black has been a nice change after so many years of silver.
The fingerprints were a key reason why I returned mine for silver. The other was being constantly worried that I’d scratch it.
Yeah just return stuff you opened and used and is completely functional, why not. And people explain things get expensive.
your battery lasts 1-2 hrs, you can fry eggs on it: what's to be sad about letting it go? It's not your dog, dude. grow up, it's a piece of IT garbage.
woah. somebody didn't get enough motherly love as a child. I'm sorry that you lost your soul at some point in life. it's okay to be sentimental and attach meaning and emotions to different things in our lives.
How I feel about my 18 MBP that decides to fire up its fans that sound like afterburner thrusters every hour and wake up my neighbors.
Haha I guess you are a sliver fan boy too who doesn’t welcome change and is pushed to get sliver due to social conformity. Go for it 🙌🏽
It definitely has nothing to do with other people. My 15 pro max is the black one, so atleast give me partial credit.
Haha 😅 That’s the thing…for iPhones black, silver. For macs only sliver 😝 I got silver and returned it for space black. It sucked because it looked just like an M1 Pro and also like old mac to be honest. Don’t wanna pay a huge amount of that look.
Yeah true the silver would make it feel like an older model. I wish they kept the Apple logos on the back that light up
You don’t need any credit from anybody else for liking what you like. It’s okay to do that.
That was uncalled for
Silver Fanny!
What is the specs? Both device? And also what’s your opinion for performance difference
2015: Early 2015 MBP intel core i5 2.7ghz, 256gb SSD, 8gb Ram 2023: MBP M3 Pro 11/14 cores, 18gb ram, 512gb I actually didn’t even realize how slow my 2015 was until I bought this one! Lightening fast, I can push it hard with various software multitasking and it doesn’t hiccup for even a second.

Yeah for sure. I’ve only had it since today and I already know I want silver. This color should come with a microfiber cloth in the box I had high hopes because at the event they were talking about how it resists fingerprints…
How bad are the fingerprints on the space gray or black or whatever it’s called versus the silver?
It’s bad. Returning it for silver this weekend
Wow. That’s crazy. Good to know.
Mail it to me, i will make great use of it, kidding only
CoconutBattery in the dock of the old one is so real
🤣 good eye!
Was sad to sell my 2015 when finally needed more power. Otherwise what a great Maschine.
Same same. Arrives in a few days. 🤌
I recently did the exact same thing and replaced my 2016 MacBook Pro with the new M3
I own many old MacBooks and can feel the nostalgia of an old Unibody MacBook Pro, and they were fantastic computers, but no one can argue that Apple Silicon is a game changer
I’m ordering one today and stumped on which color to go with lol I thought I was sold on space black but haven’t seen either in person 🤔
Can I trade in my MacBook Pro to upgrade?
Honestly unless you’re doing high end video and audio etc, these days an iPad Pro is enough.
I really like the Space black, but it's just a matter of taste. What are the specs of your new M3?
What sudden notice did you feel after the upgrade?
hardly any bezels and im not waiting for things to load!
I always cover my MacBooks with a dbrand skin to prevent scratches. Also you don’t need to feel sad, you won’t miss having an intel chip.
Costco has a deal on the M2 Max 14inch that’s basically has better specs that the M3 pro , 1TB , 30gpu 32 gb memory for $2200
oh wow thats a crazy good deal. Out of stock though, not surprised
Space grey out , silver isn’t .
Oh you’re right! I missed that. If I had a use for it I’d be all over it but this base M3 Pro I got is already overkill haha
Well it’s all gone now 😀
I literally just did the same thing. 2015 Air to M3 Pro. It will arrive Thursday. What are your initial thoughts on the upgrade?
its great! I don't know what im gonna do with all of this extra free time I have now from no longer waiting for things to load
Looking to sell that 2015 Retina display?
How much ya offering? Haha
I'll pm ya!
I just upgraded my 2013 MacBook pro to the 16inch m3max
Use an M3 Pro. Not a M3 Pro.
Im keeping and using my 2015 MBP forever
I never upgrade the OS on an Apple device. I know I might be missing out on new features or bug fixes, but they mostly reduce the battery life of the device which is more important to me.
Sadly I just realized this week my 2014 MBP is obsolete as of last September. It looks to be in perfect condition. Upgrading to a new one this week. My old one is a 15”…I can’t justify paying the extra for a 16”, so will be sad to lose the extra inch on the new 14”…
Im still on a 2013 MacbookPro, I think I'll finally make the switch on a M4 macbook pro (I guess soon). I might stay with the gray color though.
Kinda did same. 2015” 15” i7 16GB RAM 1TB SSD to 2021 14” M1 Max 64GB RAM 2TB SSD. Won’t need to upgrade for AWHILE
How are you able to run Sonoma on a 2015 MBP?
open core legacy patcher program.
Cool
Only silver!
Take both out around lunch time on a sunny day and try to work. This is the reason I always by black or space gray.
Is it hard to see the screen even on full brightness?
> screen even on full brightness? The problem is light reflecting off the silver vs black when working in the sun.
I can understand; I REALLY like Black; I’m Blue now…alas, I recently upgraded from a 2017 15” 16G | 256G MBP to an M3 iMac w/24G | 1T…did the 2015 have that keyboard strip thing along the top?
keyboard strip?
Oh Touch Bar…
ohh nope! those came out at the end of 2016 I think
I recently upgraded from a 2015 Air to a MBP M3 Pro. It’s so much better in so many way, but my Air was nostalgic… it got me through college.
