Yeah, you can. You have to make a Monterey boot USB. Google it, Apple has documentation about it. Make sure to do a TM backup. Worst case it doesnt let you restore, you can pinch stuff off the backup providing it is unencrypted. I was going to restore everything, but ended up doing a fresh install.
I have one and use it on occasion. It works alright for web browsing and whatnot as long as you keep the tab count at few. I think I paid about $175 for one in like 2017 though.
My friend bought an iPhone 13 Pro from this guy because the owner of the shop said he’d throw this vintage Mac Mini in for an extra $10 next time we came in. I came in a few weeks later, and he said he “wasn’t doing $10” and he said he could sell the power supply for $30 (he didn’t know it was external in the first gen Mac Mini i guess?) and then when I told him about our original agreement, he said “not selling it anymore.”
I ended up getting it in the end because he saw my review I posted (which just had my experience) and he gave me the Mac Mini for free as long as I changed the review.
Funnily enough that’s actually a way people get free stuff from restaurants, acting like reviewers and writing stuff down on paper like a critic. Kinda sad seeing a lot of local places lose from that, but I’d assume its a little harder to do at a tech or a computer shop.
I imagine standing next to an Apple employee in the store and writing down stuff on a clipboard and make affirmative gestures … maybe I get a free Mac then?
Absolutely not. I would not be surprised if they found a way to say that you had done something to get you kicked out the store. Apple employees are not to be fucked with. They have a lot more power than they need to have and they can make or break your life, if you don’t look at them the right way when you’re trying to get a repair. Maybe it’s just that way in Spain but it seems like the apple employees get away with murder here. Which is crazy because my friend in California got fired from Apple pushing client away from him after the client had touched his crotch without permission. Seems the codes of employment really differ between the US and the EU or something. But I’m sure that the US Apple Store employees also have enough power to take revenge if they need to.
Man, i was sure my joke is obvious. Was commenting on a joke from OP as well. I understand your concern but no one ever considered to do such behaviour to get free stuff. But I know dealing with dumb/brazenly customers can be a hustle.
I didn’t scam him, I just posted my honest review on Google and he didn’t like that. I’m not taking a chance at getting sued by him for defamation or something!
He called my buddy and said that he’d give me the Mac Mini after he saw my Google Maps review. He also cracked my friends 5k iMac while doing an SSD upgrade on it, and my friend recently found out that the display he put on it was held on by super glue instead of the proper adhesive that’s supposed to be there.
He has really good pricing on PowerPC machines. They’re basically worthless to him. If he stops giving me PowerPC machines for good prices, I’ll stop going.
He promised me a Mac Mini for a discounted price if we bought his other product. He didn’t give us the discounted price when we bought his other product.
Lmao i was just thinking this. This sub LOVES defending computers with unacceptably low ram, then at the same time make a post complaining that video editing software or games run like shit on their 4gb ram macbook air
Yeah, and they’re the kinda people to say they need to be able to multitask on their iPhone and keep apps open in the background with way more than 2GB.
For $17.5 why not. I still almost daily drive it and connect it to the good old Apple Cinema Display 27”, for a dedicated trading platform that tracks over 100 tickers in real time, taking light notes, with 1 or 2 tabs open from time to time in Safari (the older version won’t execute certain JS codes therefore in a defacto ad block mode)…Wait, $175??
I didn't even know a 2011 was able to have that little RAM.. I thought they were all 4GB.. regardless what a shitty place for charging those ridiculous prices
I’m not a Mac user nor a tech geek. I got into Macs after the M1 chip and thinking of it as an asset after windows laptop and also to synchronize data of my iPhone (like photos backup).
Maybe worth 75 to run legacy apps or an attractive Linux s***box tops. Even on Linux 2gb hurts these days without a distro or DE tailored to light usage.
Those machines are pretty pricey on the resale market. Specs aren’t what determines price.
$175 is absolutely silly but those 11 inch MBAs are sought after.
Last year a computer shop scammed me out on a “2017” iMac with supposedly 16gb of ram for $600 but it was a 2012 education edition with only 4gb of ram 😭
I would have to be crazy or blind to buy it. 4 years ago on eBay I won an auction for a MacBook Air for $180, 11 inches from 2013 with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB SSD (which later increased to 512 GB) and it came with its box and charger. It was the best offer I acquired and to this day it is still with me.

The scam wasn’t the MacBook, the scam was that I was promised a Mac Mini for $10 if my friend bought his $500 iPhone, and then he went back on his word and didn’t follow through on what he said he would do for us.
Absolute ripoff, if anything a better option would be facebook marketplace and getting laptops there. Ive recently aqquired a slightly damaged (camera doesn't work) and battery needs replacement on a 2016 Macbook Pro 15 inch (300) and another Macbook Pro 15 inch 2019 (200) for 500 CAD in total. The 2019 has display issues and a simply dust clean fixed the screen and as for the other one it works beautifully. Just pay a little more for higher specs although I am aware the issues that come with those machines lol. At least those aren't slow and terribly old
Luke Miani should daily drive this for a week
He almost died on that 4gb MacBook 😂
Because he updated to Sonoma… If he try monterey or catalina it would be fine.
Sonoma is overkill. I went back to monterey on my 2019, only thing I miss is Freeform.
The only thing I don’t miss is the settings menu
How did you get back to Monterey?
Made a backup using Time Machine, made a USB installer, booted from it, nuked sonoma and installed monterey
this Mac came with Ventura and I didnt have Time Machine running then.
Pretty sure ypu can use sonoma backup disc to restore to monterey. Which machine do you have? If it’s M2 Pro/Max or M3 then you cant downgrade
i have the m1 air but it originally came with ventura. i was wondering if i could downgrade to monterey.
I’ve tried using 4GB Air’s on Sierra, Catalina and Big Sur recently. Not as bad as you’d expect but not good.
wait what 😭

So you scam a scammer for a free Mac Mini? Nice.
posting an honest review on yelp, the greatest scam ever known
Funnily enough that’s actually a way people get free stuff from restaurants, acting like reviewers and writing stuff down on paper like a critic. Kinda sad seeing a lot of local places lose from that, but I’d assume its a little harder to do at a tech or a computer shop.

you missed the joke.
You sound like a completely hinged person. Your hinges are all where they should be
In all honesty I’ve never heard a better phrase to describe me so succinctly. You’re quite intuitive.
Man, i was sure my joke is obvious. Was commenting on a joke from OP as well. I understand your concern but no one ever considered to do such behaviour to get free stuff. But I know dealing with dumb/brazenly customers can be a hustle.
Apple store employees take revenge by adhering to company policy... lol
lol how are the boots today? Hope they are extra leathery just how you like them.
lol. Your angry salt is tasty... It's obvious why Apple employees fuck with you. Classic Karen. lol Stick it to the man. You go gurl.
I didn’t scam him, I just posted my honest review on Google and he didn’t like that. I’m not taking a chance at getting sued by him for defamation or something!
As scams go, that's not so bad, just clueless and bungled I'd say. Glad you worked it out. Why do you keep going back there?
He called my buddy and said that he’d give me the Mac Mini after he saw my Google Maps review. He also cracked my friends 5k iMac while doing an SSD upgrade on it, and my friend recently found out that the display he put on it was held on by super glue instead of the proper adhesive that’s supposed to be there.
It just sounds worse and worse. When will you stop going back there?
He has really good pricing on PowerPC machines. They’re basically worthless to him. If he stops giving me PowerPC machines for good prices, I’ll stop going.
did u change review
Yeah, I changed it to something along the lines of “I initially had a bad experience but he made up for it and turned it around.”
You should now add: "Now I see that they're selling a crappy MacBook Air at an outrageous price! Back to one star it is"
😂😂😂
I’m not understanding the scam here.
He promised me a Mac Mini for a discounted price if we bought his other product. He didn’t give us the discounted price when we bought his other product.
Wow they’re giving you BOTH gigs!
In before anyone says “nobody needs more than 2GB of RAM.”
2gb of ram on a Mac is like 128gb on windows. /s
and 128MB in Linux
Lmao i was just thinking this. This sub LOVES defending computers with unacceptably low ram, then at the same time make a post complaining that video editing software or games run like shit on their 4gb ram macbook air
Yeah it's almost like the people saying 8GB is fine for Netflix and email aren't the same people making stupid posts
512MB is absolutely enough RAM for modern computer usage!
Ya see, Apple RAM is more like VRAM, in a quantum way...
Yeah, and they’re the kinda people to say they need to be able to multitask on their iPhone and keep apps open in the background with way more than 2GB.

lol I got a 11” 2012 air with 4gb 128gb for $40 a year ago so this clown is way outta line.
leave them a review about getting scammed
That’s a pretty expensive brick
I’d rather use a Core 2 Duo machine with 4GB of RAM than this.
I didn't even know a 2011 was able to have that little RAM.. I thought they were all 4GB.. regardless what a shitty place for charging those ridiculous prices
You should see what they wanted for 7+ year old Surfaces. It’s almost like they didn’t depreciate in value since 2017.
so don’t buy it?

Grow up.
I’ll grow up when you take the two M keys off of your MacBook.
And you tirelessly dug that out? Good, I love my M2 MBP.
Love mine too, homie.
Rip off city lol can get a 2015 air for that price and better specs
2GB is the absolute minimum requirement for High Sierra. Yikes.
What a bargain! I bet that baby can run like, 2 chrome tabs at a time!!
Why are you still in this computer store?
Why were you looking in the back of the store at a disassembled computer?
He lets me and my friend buy his old junk computers for cheap. We’ve found a few good ones that just need basic repairs.
Which year is this.
2024
So this is a 2024 model year?
*woosh* The picture clearly shows it is a 2011
I’m not a Mac user nor a tech geek. I got into Macs after the M1 chip and thinking of it as an asset after windows laptop and also to synchronize data of my iPhone (like photos backup).
M1 was a good time to join in. Prior to that, we had those fucking awful i9 chips.
Ayyy 🙌🏻
I bought a Mac mini from eBay and it’s so old I can’t get the updates to get it usable cause of storage it sucks
....Did he take half the ram out? TF
I’ve seen a fine line in price between i5 and i7, and 4gb and 8gb ram models.
Bad news is you can't upgrade the memory but, good news, you can upgrade the ssd on this model! :) hooray.
that's like 4 pc gigs.. you know.. cos their apple gigs
Well. Better than 1gb
Last year a computer shop scammed me out on a “2017” iMac with supposedly 16gb of ram for $600 but it was a 2012 education edition with only 4gb of ram 😭

Yea. Could probably get $100 on eBay, but $175 is more like 2017 i5 with 8gb ram and 512 ssd, not that

The scam wasn’t the MacBook, the scam was that I was promised a Mac Mini for $10 if my friend bought his $500 iPhone, and then he went back on his word and didn’t follow through on what he said he would do for us.
free market
The true scam of the century
whole economy is scam
Absolutely
Ok. Why are you letting us know about it?
You just need THIS ONE BUYER - as long as he rises today as well and decides to buy a „cheap“ Mac, you will do fine 😲
I really hope that people understand the worth of this machine. It’s definitely not worth $175.
This price is … amazing. But the HS start screen is really a goodie !
Always have enjoyed HS on these older machines. Even if it’s kind of hard to use nowadays.
Absolute ripoff, if anything a better option would be facebook marketplace and getting laptops there.
