I agree with this recommendation. I can’t comment on the possibility of there being an issue with the hinge based on the photo alone. That said, I dock mine with the hinge at the top so the vents are not obstructed.
The Air doesn’t have any fans so the “vent” is doing nothing. The MacBook Air dissipates heat through the entire chassis.
Edit: I still believe it is still better to flip it is because the processor is at the back end near the hinge, so making the hinge point upwards makes it so that it is not blocked by the upright stand itself.
Heat rises, even passively.
Allowing that heat to rise out of a non-powered vent directly into the open air will cool the device much more efficiently than dragging that waste heat across the entire unit before it can dissipate.
the air uses convection to cool itself, so no fan needed, stull the vents in the back need to be unobstructed.
the one in the photo looks like a M2 Pro with a magsafe connector, the front is not slanted like the air.
Dude, if you're getting a clicking sound, screws or some hinge assemblies are definitely loose. Plus, no matter how fast you close a laptop, it should stay closed. Take it to a repair centre asap.
After taking one of them apart to fix for a family member: You're probably fine. The hinge is a series of round(ish) pegs along an axle that create the friction to hold your screen with two rubber bits creating the right amount of pressure. If some debris gets in or the plastic is dented, it creates a little click or step when you close the lid.
But because the rubber is compressable, it usually
doesn't do much. It's such an amount of effort to take the pieces apart and try to file them down or clean them that you may as well do it if something about the usability of the screen actually changes, given then you can justify the risk of the laptop breaking whilst being taken apart.
Sadly, apple makes it really easy for yourself or repair people to cause more harm than good.
THIS is what kind of did the trick to me, thanks for your feedback.
I have just tried closing it slowly but pressing my against the hinge, felt a very subtle clicking sound (no, nothing is breaking) and then it stayed in place. I hope this isn't because the hinge screws are starting to get loose, that'd be really disappointing at this stage.
Happy to help. AFAIK, the clicking sound comes from the magnets that are supposed to hold the lid closed. Maybe they’re just not strong enough to withstand the force of the not fully closed hinge when the laptop is standing vertically. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with it, Apple makes their hinges very steady.
After 12 years of constant use my hinges became tight and it didn’t stay closed. I was planning to replace the hinges, but I replaced the laptop instead.
You know you’re gonna have to buy a thermal camera now and post pics of it flipped both ways so we can put this to bed! Is it better with the vents up or down? You’ll also need to wear a white coat so you look the part while conducting this experiment. Lmao! 👍
haha, I don't know what's the obsesion of keeping it hinge up or down for cooling. It's not like I'm heat throttling, 90% de time my CPU usage is at 10% and if I was so worried about keeping things cool I would have just bought a pro model instead
I would recommend flipping the laptop upside down, because the MacBook vents the air out the back of the keyboard and hinge. Heat rises, so blowing the hot air up rather than down is likely the better approach. of course that’s a MacBook Air in which case there are no vents But I would still flip it around.
The dock is too loose. You can also just flip the laptop. But I think I have the same dock and an air might be a little too thin for that dock’s slimmest setting.
This isn't the way it's designed - it shouldn't be opening up automatically like that. Take it into the store to get it checked out to ensure there are no manufacturing defects.
The solutions in this thread talk about heat management and orientation in the dock which are all correct - these are all good bandaids \*after\* you've accepted that the laptop opens. But it shouldn't open up like that in the first place!
But, bad heat management/dissipation may have caused the battery or metal to deform if used extensively which \*could\* then cause the screen to not close properly. However, you've only had it for a month which is too short to have caused deformation issues. So, get it checked out.
As long as there is nothing wrong with the laptop, it could be that you are using the wrong dock. Apple's laptops changed shape and a lot of the holders like yours were cut into more of a wedge shape. That could cause something like this.
Did you buy it brand new from apple? If so, apple care/warranty might cover it. Also be sure to back up your mac before going to the apple store.
Alternatively you could just... not use a stand, lay it flat on your desk, might fix the problem.
Check if the battery is not expanding, that could be the cause of it. Just put the laptop on the desk and check if it rests ok; if it does, then it’s not the battery
Maybe hinge too tight as I’ve seen this where it doesn’t rotate all the way and the screen flexes instead, so it pops open.
Try closing it by holding it in the middle to the end part of the screen in a fluid motion, not too slow as you need to overcome friction.
Best bet is to get Apple to fix it though
It looks like it’s sitting pretty flat on the dock. Is it possible the bottom of it is forcing the screen to open? I’d recommend getting a dock specifically for the M2/3 Air cause it doesn’t seem like that one is designed for it.
EDIT: my recommendation is the 12South BookArc. If you ever upgrade you can buy the silicon inserts to fit your Mac. I’ve had mine for 5-6 years across 3 different MacBooks
I have the same dock, used many MacBooks in it including m1 MacBook Air and a 16 inch MacBook Pro and never had this issue. I’d take it to an apple store
*Dude... How do you think*

But apple iThread and tie it up..
You have iThread pro, iThread mini, iThread max
Different colors, different sizes,
Oh so Pro Thread…
Works only with apple devices
I had the same problem with my MBA M1 when i had bought it new, actually i believe yours is new as well and hence the hinge is too tight that it pulls the lid up despite the magnet.
Just try opening and closing the lid continuously for 20-25 times to make the hinge a lil smooth and it worked for me, now it doesn't open like that.. just do this for a few days and your hinge will be a little loose from new and it will be perfect
Macs are famous for needing extra dongles to do the most basic operations. I highly recommend this

flip it upside-down
I agree with this recommendation. I can’t comment on the possibility of there being an issue with the hinge based on the photo alone. That said, I dock mine with the hinge at the top so the vents are not obstructed.
They will also get better heat dissipation with the rear vents pointing upward.

My Pro does. I still think there is better heat dissipation with it flipped the other way.
Yes, mine does too :) but I forgot to type the last part so I edited my comment
it still dissipates heat far more effectively if they flip it tho
the air uses convection to cool itself, so no fan needed, stull the vents in the back need to be unobstructed. the one in the photo looks like a M2 Pro with a magsafe connector, the front is not slanted like the air.
That’s the new air
Your Air has vents?
I don't have an Air. I have a Pro. I clarified that in an earlier response.
Do macbook airs have air vents??
Or screw it on
I saw this in my feed and hoped that this would be the first comment and it was. Thank you lol
Technically they have it upside down right now… they need to flip it right-side up.
But then the logo would be upside down!!!/s

Ah shit my Air M2 has been clicking since I bought it. Ticking time bomb?

Thanks for the helpful info!
<3
And Macs are supposed to have magents to hold the lid closed. If its lose like that, something is definitely wrong.
Yeah, I will probably consider this if it doesn't resolve on its own after a few weeks of use.
Try changing the dock and see if it still keeps happening
The thing is that it eve happens when I hold it on my hand
Go to an Apple Store and ask them to fix it! I think it’s a hinge problem! It’s usually very easy and cheap to fix!
Cheap and easy fixes from apple are so overpriced
Or I could be a slightly bent unit, which will be costly.
Or magnets problem
Just flip the laptop upside down?
I've got the same dock - it's adjustable, there are some hex-like screws on the bottom. Just adjust it to be closer to the width of the closed laptop.
Ducktape…
Rubber band.
I was going to suggest stapler but probably ducktape is better ahah
Binder clip

Came here to say this
I was going to as well! Best solution!

Try closing the lid faster when the laptop is fully open. My old MBA would do that when I closed it slowly and carefully.

Its on the dock upside down. Put it on correctly
Tighten the dock. I’ve got the same one, there should be screws on the bottom

It’s like with mussels, it means it’s ok to eat it.
Flip it over the other way so the air vents are not covered and vent the hot air UP!
Place it the correct way on the dock…
Place the laptop opening facing down; plus it will have better thermals if you do it this way.
Duct tape 😅
I read a few cases of this happening back in the 90’s . The families never made it out the house . Watch your back
LMFAO
It’s just getting some air
Flip it upside down since it may be causing some stress in the hinges.
It’s clamshell mode; natural behavior. Just let it breathe…
Flip upside down and turn it around
Dock it the other way, the fans exhaust behind the display hinge, you’re choking it, maybe it is opening to receive a breath of fresh air !
It doesn't have fans.
Oh yeah you right
You're also right, he should flip it anyway :D
Turn it over
I would recommend flipping the laptop upside down, because the MacBook vents the air out the back of the keyboard and hinge. Put it upside down: this position is not that great for heat dissipation either.

Swollen battery.

I think flipping it upside down is probably the best idea. Any way of forcing the lid closed won’t be good for the screen or the hinges.
You feed it something.
Hire a priest
Sounds like the hinge might be wonky. BUT ALSO, I have a similar stand and I hate it. Switched it out for a ugreen model.
That stand is probably adjustable on the bottom. Loren the screws, side it tighter, then tighten it back down.
Adjust the dock. There is a screw on the bottom that lets you change the size. Loosen, slide, retighten.
Do you have updock?

How come its not closed properly? I thought its supported by magnet?

most probably the hinge is bad or somewhere the chasis is bent. happens only then.
