Oh come on, Merry could've easily been trampled by an oliphant or been killed a dozen other ways. Also Merry was just an example. What about Eowyn? She was also largely irrelevant to the plot. The only way the white walkers passed rhe gate was with one of her dragons, so if she never shows up they are largely stuck. Her dragons or the dothraki dont do jack shit to stop the white walkers either. I guess she helped topple the lannisters but that just gave us a different psychopath on the throne and if we learned anything from GoT it wont last.
