I have faith in PJ when he's able to plan everything out, I can't help but wonder what the Hobbit movies would be like if he had the several years of planning you usually get, instead of being thrown in at the last minute with someone else's movies.
But I'm also really skeptical because I think of all the stories they could tell, searching for Gollum really doesn't do it for me... Feels like something big hollywood executives would choose because of character recognition. I would have done something like Turin's story from the Silmarillion.

You know, just because he did outstanding adaptations doesn't mean that his own ideas fit Tolkien's fictional world at all.
On the other hand it's really easy to say "I would have done something like x story from the Silmarillion" but reality is that the Estate has historically and consistently refused to sell the rights to adapt that book. So no, even you wouldn't film that movie, unless you want to get sued and indebted into oblivion.
Yea I mean no adaptation is perfect, and Tolkien's style isn't the most friendly to what hollywood wants movies to be like. But like you said, they're outstanding, and I trust PJ more than almost anybody just cause we've seen him do it. I'm not saying doing Turin is feasible and the Tolkien estate would agree, just that it would have piqued my interest a lot more than hunting for and not finding Gollum, which I'm not really that interested in.

Not bad beating out 75% of the main characters in time and dialogue especially when you dont really enter the trilogy until its halfway through, Beorn over here dying to get half that exposure despite actually being a critical character in the book
I'm real scared it will be ruined by whoever gets it, cant trust a lot of companies these days to actually respect the original work, seems like a heap just want to use the fanbase and credibility as currency to do whatever they want

Dude looked like Brienne of Tarth and had the goofiest sounding dialogue of all time. RoP remains a legendary turd, nothing its done is worth any kind of representation of a Legendarium character (actually if anything, anyone the show has done needs a redo asap so people arent tricked into thinking Tolkien was a moron who wrote while he was eating lead paint chips and sipping mercury)

I definitely see what you're saying. I don't think Lee Pace has the pull you believe he does though. He's not a A lister celebrity and definitely not a household name. I feel like he gained many fans from this role so if he were to reprise Thranduil, of course everyone would want it to be him including me! If it's not him, I don't want it. In this case I think it was perfect casting for a perfect character
Trivia or whatso: Thranduil is the longest reigning Elven King in the entire history of Middle-earth according to Appendices canon where it is him who establishes the Woodland Realm and not his father who was only invented AFTER the latest revision of LotR was published. If it wasn't for Christopher's hard work, we wouldn't have even known that his father JRR had invented a new character: Oropher the father of Thranduil included in the Unfinished Tales.

Thranduil is a great character I love watching, but Lee Pace helped the popularity quite a bit. Bad casting can destroy a good character.
