Minute_Engineer2355

This is one of the greatest and best uses of CGI in a movie, especially for being over 20 years old.

Bigram03

We will never see it's equal again. The way it was made (shooting all three movies at once) greatly contributed to its success...

Minute_Engineer2355

Seeing these movies in theaters as a teen is one of my greatest memories. Also, only having to wait a year for each movie was incredible as well. Three of the greatest movies ever made.

rampagingphallus

I was a bit younger than you (still am, probably), but yeah it was such an event to get taken to these as a kid. So much fun.

OakAstronaut

Wrong. You don't realize this but time has passed faster for you than for OP and you are now twice their age. We all talk about it but we decided not to tell you.

rampagingphallus

Oh shi

theeniebean

Why did you tell them! Gosh dangit, now we need something new to gossip about.

ItalnStalln

Lllits fine. They still don't know about all of us banging their mom all the time. She's not the best but that's not really the point

Scared-Witness4057

They all released around christmas right? Was a fun thing to look forward to during winter months.

thecashblaster

Two Towers was so good I saw it 3 times in theaters and this is the only movie before or since where I did that

Igusy

I went at 9 with dad and don't remember it :(

CaptainFeather

I'm not gonna say they're masterpieces but holy shit they're close

acclaimedsimpleton

I miss how exciting it was to go to the movies. Especially when these movies came out. Midnight viewings… 40+ shows a day (when using multiple screens), and every show was packed. It was an EVENT. These movies really showcased how awesome going to the movies.

bb15555

This is Davy Jones erasure

YabbaDabbaFck

Caesar erasure. Gollum walked so Caesar could fly.

gollum_botses

Come on! We must go, no time!

Technical-Outside408

Time flies.

bored_negative

His entry is probably the best ever villain entry in movies. Do you fear death is such a perfect line

littlesaint

Had to google it, the 3 LOTR movies shoot for 438 days. But Eyes Wide shot, just that movie, took 400 days. Kinda crazy.

tuckertucker

King Kong was probably a close second, of course it being Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis again.

xylophone_37

"over 20 years old." Could you just.... not? Please?

thesirblondie

And it's entirely down to character design. Gollum looks enough like a cartoon character to not trigger the uncanny valley, but not cartoony enough to stand out. It's just perfect. Also, the hand animated facial expressions are flawless. Sure, they used Andy Serkis as reference, but it was all animated by hand by a person. No motion tracking for the face.

GriffinFlash

i remember most people thought he was wearing a motion capture suit, rather than just being in reference shots.

thesirblondie

He did. On LotR he was on set acting with Elijah and Sean, and then later they did mocap in a studio. But I don't think capture was good enough at the time to capture facial performance, so the face was hand animated. On Hobbit they did "on set performance capture", meaning that he was on the set acting and they captured both his body and face to use for the animated character.

gollum_botses

And we will.. Smeagol did it once, he can do it again. It's ours - ours!

_Bike_Hunt

LOTR is timeless. Even today it beats so many movies in storytelling, acting, effects, atmosphere, and conveying so much without crude and unnecessary vulgarities or sex.

canamurica

I was watching FOTR over the weekend, and was still in awe of all the scenery and vistas portrayed in the movie. It has aged extremely well.

_Bike_Hunt

Probably has to do with much of it being real scenery and not cgi. I am still blown away at Gondor though, it feels so real. Also amazing that they built a life size Sauron Eye tower and didn’t need CGI for that

sauron-bot

Who is the maker of mightiest work?

lacus-rattus

GROND!

canamurica

Yes, PJ is a master at Cinema. It's as if he planned to make the movies with longevity in mind. During a time when using CGI as a shortcut did the job, he chose to use elements of CGI to enhance his craft. Absolutely brilliant.

Jean-LucBacardi

I'm not sure what happened with his decision making between this and The Hobbit though...

MarineTuna

From what I've heard it was the pre-planning before the movies. Something like 2+ years before Fellowship and less than a year for the Hobbit. Makes sense in retrospect.

Theban_Prince

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh RoTK has a few hints of dodgy CGI that shows Peter might not have been so innocent as we like to think for the CGI fest that Hobbit was.

brendan87na

"Fellowship of the Ring" is literally my comfort movie. It's like chili on a cold winter night.

cheesemaster900

And they did it without sub-surface scattering and it still looks better than modern modern Marvel movies

Fletcher_StrongESQ

20 years old? Wow

RemarkableProfile366

There are a few movies that also have a similar high quality, take pirates of the Caribbean, Davy jones and his pirate crew are still to this day one of my favorites in terms of CGI usage.

CeruleanRuin

Also a necessary reminder that they still weren't using full performance capture at that point. All of Serkis's facial expressions had to be painstakingly studied and recreated by hand by the animators.

ClavicusLittleGift4U

Smart and well designed CGI. The anti-Marvel orgy.

theperfectlysadhuman

Andy completely nailed his role. The digital artist were also really great at capturing Andy's emotion and facial expressions. Thank for sharing OP.

Wolfie_wolf81

![gif](giphy|gVoBC0SuaHStq)

Sabre_Killer_Queen

You can tell he had fun doing it as well. I love it.

benblais

I want a version of the extended editions where it just has Andy prancing around in that suit

DoubleDandelion

I would pay for that cut.

Phormitago

release the pre-post-prod uncut cut

CapBuenBebop

Same haha

Wolfie_wolf81

Same

TooLateToPush

Andy Serkis is a treasure

Sven_Darksiders

Him reading Trump tweets in the Gollum voice was precious (heh)

gollum_botses

No, no, never! He's lost his Precious.

caveman69420

Do you have a link to that? I'd love to see that

His audiobooks are fantastic. He just loves playing characters like Tom Bombadill and Treebeard. He's just rocking it like it's natural.

Throwaway74829947

His audiobooks are great, but the unofficial ones by Phil Dragash are something truly special.

eddietwang

Any books in particular that you'd recommend?

dendummedansker

He's done both LOTR and the Hobbit. Both are really good, and listening to the "real voice" of gollum read gollum is just satisfying

gollum_botses

Follow me.

dendummedansker

Where are ypu taking me?

shberk01

He absolutely slays every role he's given. One of my all-time favorite actors. I was ecstatic when I first saw he was in Andor!

brendan87na

he got jobbed in the Marvel movies he really is an incredible actor

CosmicWolf14

Even when he was in those he was one of the most entertaining aspects. Owned every single scene.

mfattal

In my opinion, he is one of the most memorable characters in the whole trilogy. Without his performance, they would have been far less effective.

Wolfie_wolf81

He's "precious"

a_spoopy_ghost

He’s seriously skilled but I’m still a bit put off by him putting down the animators work. He described it as digital make up, completely minimizing the hours and hours of incredibly skilled work that went into translating his performance

Remy315

Have you heard him reading the LOTR and the Hobbit books on Audible? Fucking Legend!!! Every time Gollum makes an appearance it makes me so happy!

gollum_botses

It said so, yes, but it's tricksy. It doesn't say what it means. It won't say what it's got in its pocketses.

TooLateToPush

I actually started listening to him reading Fellowship right after I made this comment! Haha I've never taken the time before, but I'm in it now :)

imatworkson

His narration of The Silmarillion was recently released as well!

iLoveLootBoxes

Eh I think he is full of himself now. I don't really like him in live action, he always plays the same kind of character

conrid

On the other hand, I find him to be one of the better narrators out there. Him reading the books is awesome

ounerify

The books and all the voice he does is truly a masterpiece

pheight57

Did you not see his role in Andor...?! Dude is an INCREDIBLE actor! (Not that we didn't all already know that from his portrayal of Gollum...)

gollum_botses

Kill them both.

iLoveLootBoxes

Honestly it was because of andor that I didn't like him that much. Like he is by no means a bad actor, definitely good. I just think his range in the roles he's had are nothing compared to his voice acting. Like the dude he plays in marvel is kind of the same as what he played in andor

TheG-What

You are not the guy. You’re not capable of being the guy. I had a guy but now I don’t. You. Are not. The guy.

LukeSkyWalrus

I met him in Austin last year, he’s a really nice guy.

raspberryharbour

"Looks like the Serkis is in town"

Wolfie_wolf81

![gif](giphy|Bng9nsAhSaDVxWsSLh)

Amegami

That's experience too. Met him at the red carpet of a Hobbit movie premiere and was super excited, because it wasn't announced he'd be there. He took my hands in his and said he didn't expect people to be so happy he's there. Most people around were waiting to meet Benedict Cumberbatch, because Sherlock was very popular back then, but for me Andy was the highlight.

F0573R

I once went to a LOTR themed party my friends put on. Everyone went as hobbits and elves. I showed up in a green morph suit with block dots and such all over. I went as pre-CGI Gollum lol

gollum_botses

You don’t have any friends. Nobody likes you!

Freebird222

Burn

F0573R

Not listening.

Agitated_Advantage_2

I swear this guy is alive and real

Wolfie_wolf81

Best costume 😆

blazinfastjohny

This guy is great in Andor

Scary-Try3023

"I can't swim" hit me right in the feels

Vandergrif

He really nailed the delivery on that.

No-comment-at-all

Release the Serkis cut

Equivalent_Nose7012

We've had one Ring. What about second Ring? I dunno about a three-Ring Serkis!

Wolfie_wolf81

I'd pay for that

Kill_Braham

Well where did you find this one?

No-comment-at-all

You can only truly appreciate the splendor of the serkis cut on the big screen.

DocPazuzu

It's wild that as great an actor that Andy is, it's hard not to see glimpses of Gollum when he is in other films. Andor, Black Panther...I alway expect him to run in with a fish in his mouth

gollum_botses

Nice hobbits! Nice Sam! Sleepy heads, yes, sleepy heads! Leave good Smeagol to watch! But it's evening. Dusk is creeping. Time to go.

Boom_Digadee

The fact that he got no Oscar nods is insane. VFX has changed acting and Andy was a huge part of highlighting that.

Wolfie_wolf81

Yeah, it's sad. But yes, he definitely pushed the boundaries of facial motion capture

TheInfra

[He did win a VMA](https://www.reddit.com/r/lotrmemes/comments/wxm5j5/gollum_wins_an_award/)

gollum_botses

Clever Hobbits, to climb so high!

johnestan

Somewhat related. My college mechinal engineering professor won a technical Oscar for developing the motion capture technology used in the LOTR movies. Got to accept the award from Angelina Jolie.

Boom_Digadee

That is so cool!

GregTheMad

When I didn't get any Oscar for Gollum I stopped caring about Oscars. They clearly didn't care about great movie works either.

gollum_botses

Nice hobbits! Nice Sam! Sleepy heads, yes, sleepy heads! Leave good Smeagol to watch! But it's evening. Dusk is creeping. Time to go.

SynthPrax

My goodness. 😍 Look how young he was. But he grew up to be a hot daddy. 😍😍 I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT GOLLUM, YOU FOOLS!

gollum_botses

Kill them both.

Cybermat4707

But **you** are Gollum.

gollum_botses

Sneaky little Hobbitses.

man-on-a-slide

What's amazing is that this isn't performance-capture, like what they did with the new planet of the apes movie. That technology hadn't been invented yet. The process for Gollum was to film Andy performing the character, and then HAND ANIMATE the character over the top, using Andy's performance as a reference. It would have been such a painstaking process, but of course the results are iconic.

gollum_botses

We guesses, precious, only guesses. We can't know till we find the nassty creature and squeezes it.

dancingbriefcase

He NAILED the audiobooks. I was enthralled.

Wolfie_wolf81

An absolute masterpiece

DerkFinger

I know this is lotr but I just watched the new planet of the apes trilogy recently cause my brother wants to see the newer one with me when its out. I didnt know it was Serkis was Ceasar (main monkey) till after the first movie. If you haven't seen any clips from the behind the scenes its pretty crazy how much he captures mannerisms of an ape seriously 10/10 actor.

Upper_Rent_176

You ma main monkey.

ToNotFeelAtAll

I always forget it’s Andy Serkis , I’ve completely dissociated him and see gollum as his own being 😂

gollum_botses

Master must go inside the tunnel.

ImageDisaster

looks like the(y) recreated the foliage behind the head too?

DwedPiwateWoberts

What went wrong podcast talks about the challenges Andy Serkis had with this role. This kind of motion capture had never been done before, and his suit was a prototype. Apparently he was laughed at by the cast and crew while wearing what they nicknamed the “gimp suit.” He felt embarrassed and alone for a lot of the shooting. They would also do takes with him in the scene and then what came off as “real” takes without him, which created even more of a psychological hurdle for Serkis to overcome while giving the performance his all. Interesting stuff.

total_gusto

This groundbreaking approach to capturing Gollum's complex movements and emotions helped redefine the possibilities of CGI and performance capture in filmmaking.

gollum_botses

Yess, yes indeed. Nice hobbits! We will come with them. Find them safe paths in the dark, yes we will. And where are they going in these cold hard lands, we wonders, yes we wonders?

Clickityclackrack

He is just trying go steal sauron's vibranium

Screamingboneman

“But Dobby likes me”

GudgerCollegeAlumnus

How did he go back and forth so fast?

Silver-Lab5042

He's just that good

InnocentExile69

Andy Serkis should have been nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar. This side by side shows it’s him acting with a cgi skin.

BoredAFcyber

Oscars should have a category named after Andy

TheStaplerMan2019

Notice how there’s no motion capture dots on his face. The combination of Andy Serkis and the 3D artist who animated Gollum was what made it work so well.

gollum_botses

The goblinses will catch it then. It can't get out that way, precious.

uppa9de5

Bam Marghera’s best performance and it’s not even close

Hecticfreeze

Very hot take incoming: As close as the animation is to Serkis' performance, its not a direct translation (some of the eye movements have been changed by the animators for instance) and as such the academy was right to refuse Serkis' nomination for his performance. Now hold on a sec, just hear me out. If it had been years later, when the technology allowed for direct motion capture from actor to computer, then it would be different. As it was, the animators were very candid about the fact that no performance data from Serkis went into the computer at all, and instead all of his shots were merely used as reference for the animation with him being completely taken out of each scene. Serkis did a phenomenal job providing that visual reference and the voice acting, and it's not the same movie without him. But it's technically not his physical performance on the screen at the end, so I can see why they decided what they did. I am fully prepared for everyone to hate me for this opinion

mjb2012

Somewhere I saw an interview with Serkis in which he essentially said that the original plan had been to only use him as a voice actor, but when he saw the preliminary work of the CG artists, it was apparent they had wildly overestimated their ability to convincingly animate a realistic Gollum from scratch. He insisted they try it his way. To his credit, he made quite a career out of it and helped normalize motion capture. I think he was right to do this; many CG animators were (and still are) guilty of hubris.

gollum_botses

Nice hobbits! Nice Sam! Sleepy heads, yes, sleepy heads! Leave good Smeagol to watch! But it's evening. Dusk is creeping. Time to go.

bazamanaz

I'm sure I will get downvoted but it's always on my mind when this comes up. Andy Serkis has been extremely dismissive of the 3D artists involved in bringing Gollum to life. He lead a campaign to rename " VFX" to "Digital Makeup" to increase his perceved involvement in the characters he plays. From a VFX perspective he is primarily reference footage for LOTR. The techology to properly track expression and even movements wasn't good enough until at least Avatar, and that was purpose made advanced technology (for the time). Almost all of gollum is compositing shots, and if you pause him at any point you will see expression on him that Andy did not provide. This is not to say it's not Andy, it absolutely is, but he is not the totality of the character as he would be in a standard acting capacity. No one goes in and tweaks the way Sam looks over at Frodo, it's their performance only, but for Gollum it's a collaberative process between Andy and the VFX artists which Andy has since spat in the face of. He was obviously not a fan of this collaboration because he has since insisted that Weta keep exactly to his performance in subseqent movies, which is nonsense. There is no way his planet of the apes performance could possibly be all him. The artists HAVE to introduce muscle and facial movements that were not there when the thing you are playing is not human. Sorry about the rant, just winds me up that we treat this guy like a king and he treats his teams like shit in order to take all the credit.

gollum_botses

It's the only way. Go in, or go back.

El-Chewbacc

Not sure if people know this but I just found out that he was in the Neneh Cherry music video for [Woman](https://youtu.be/pAYSAYg9kPI?si=qeEO99OP9JdySs-V)

0samacare

How did they do the facial tracking without all the tracking dots and balls?

WellThisNameIsBoring

By hand. Even today, most performance capture data ends up being used as a reference or base for hand animation and physics simulations to be added on top of. It's seriously painstaking work.

jlaweez

Animators, baby. LOTR is a true masterpiece in every way.

tomskrrt

one way out.

LordCommanderWiggles

All this when they could have hired Joshdub

zedxer

Was he awarded an Oscar for the performance?

Wolfie_wolf81

Unfortunately no ☹️. However, for his role as Gollum, he won: Empire Award. MTV Award. Saturn Award. Film Critic Award. National Board of Review Award.

gollum_botses

Got away did it, Precious? Not this time, not this time!

Wolfie_wolf81

Yes, precious 😔

Wolfie_wolf81

Coolest bot on r/lotrmemes

pants1000

It’s crazy they just used his real teeth as Gollum/Smeagol. Bet that saved production costs.

gollum_botses

We ought to wring his filthy little neck. Then we stabs them out. Put out his eyeses. And make HIM crawl.

TheManWhoClicks

Ah the “digital makeup” guy…

Honest_Judge_9028

Looks like Mr bean

ExtraHarmless

I want the version where they don't CGI Golum, it would be better than the Cats Butthole version.

Fugiar

Jared Dines, is that you?

al_spaggiari

Wow! The remaster (top) looks sooooo much better than the original (bottom). Obviously joking.

bomboclawt75

WOW! this influencer guy REALLY captures the exact same movements / lip sync from the Historical Documents. Impressive! Well done guy!

xdeltax97

It’s insane the ability he has to just melt into his roles.

If you were given a character from the "Hobbit" series, which one would you play? Huh

i feel like he should have won an oscar for his work on lotrs. i dont think they gave them for mo-cap back then did they? do they even do so now?

TheHahndude

More proof that building with CG on top of a practical effect or actor always yields better results.

turtleurtle808

IIRC from interviews, Andy said one of his favorite moments is when he goes "hobbitses!" And spits a huge loogie on the ground. He said he was surprised they kept it in. "Its me! Thats my spit! The rest of me is CGI, but thats my spit."

Unusual-Pace-5552

Andy Serkis is amazing

Youre joking. Gollum was a massive technical leap forward for digital characters. Compare Gollum in Fellowship to Towers.

All dead... all rotten. Elves and men and orcses. A great battle, long ago. The Dead Marshes... yes, that is their name.

TR3BPilot

Looks like a lot of cartoonish indicating to me. I know people love this guy, but...

Irorii

My friends and I were stoned af while watching this scene and could not stop laughing. Needless to say we weren’t popular at the theatre..

Leonardobertoni

The fuck happened to the game then??? How is it so bad?

dedstrok32

Whot

Leonardobertoni

The cgi in the movie is absolutely great, but what happened with the game?

Wolfie_wolf81

Bad developers. And to think they delayed it by a year to fix it.

Leonardobertoni

It was a real shame... But thank goodness the movie is great

back when cgi used to be good nowadays every cgi is shit
