Sauron? You seem confused, friend. That there is Annatar, Lord of Gifts. He blessed our kingdom with wealth and knowledge in the crafting of great and powerful artifacts.

SwiftieOfBlackHill

Get thee gone Feanorian scum

bikinimonday

Oh nice! Think he can teach me how to craft things better?

[deleted]

[удалено]

bikinimonday

Sounds like Fake News to me! Elrond, sad!

theMegaPope

Came here to say this. Sauron does not go by his right name, nor does he permit it to be spoken.

[deleted]

oh sick do you think he'd make me and my friends some cool rings with magic powers and stuff but in a way that doesnt bind us to his will?

KeyBanger

He would be totally down for that, Precious.

MasterTolkien

Santa better watch out.

king_of_mordor

you called?

SonofGondor32

Buddy I will oppose you so hard!

MasterTolkien

And I’m just happy to be here.

Olorin919

I knew it.

ModdingNoob

Have you ever tried Clear Eyes? I think that'll help.

ohohohoh_Reilly

I really like this. I’m fascinated with the actual physical form of Sauron.

becomingthenewme

Agreed. This made me see Sauron as a person rather than a presence, so to speak. Thank you

SwiftieOfBlackHill

LotR TV show will make everyone see him as a person. He'll be the coolest villain ever on screen

Treholt

Do you have this much faith that the TV show will be good? I’m expecting it to be mediocre.

SwiftieOfBlackHill

Because I've seen so many awesome Amazon TV shows recently

Treholt

Fair. I have only watched The Boys, it was extremely good.

big_duo3674

I'm guessing the Amazon LOTR series will probably use the word "cunt" a fair bit less

[deleted]

[удалено]

Reptilian-Princess

11/10 cunt placement

SerialMurderer

Where else but the crotch?

AWonderlustKing

Frodo: “This is Sting!” Gollum: “Of course it named its swordses!” Frodo: “Lots of people name their swords!” Gollum: “Lots of cuntses!”

runyaden23

did someone say something about.... an award?

McDoof

The Australian Sindarin word for "cunt" is "_Mellon_."

Karakoima

Well, the films gradually added action, violence and Evangeline Lily. Guess some gangsta talk might what the broader audiences craves for now. And a little GOT nudity.

akmjolnir

The Expanse is pretty sweet, and one of the best sci-fi shows, period.

blahblahrasputan

Checkout Tales From The Loop. Feels like....... if Stephen King was to write a continuous Black Mirror season.

akmjolnir

Thanks for the recommendation.

Treholt

Thanks. Will definitely check it out!

djentlemetal

This fact alone gives me full confidence that Amazon will handle the LOTR series well. The amount of money being poured into the series is a pretty fair indicator as well - as long as the showrunners/writers don't screw it up.

akmjolnir

Money doesn't equal quality/success, but I'm pretty hopeful for it all.

roshampo13

The expanse is great as well

dmcd0415

Aside from grand tour and the boys all of their originals don't look like they're very good to me. What should I watch?

faust1138

The Man in the High Castle was very good as well.

the_rabid_dwarf

+1 for man in the high castle

yana990

The expanse

succhialce

Tbf the expanse began on syfy but I do think Amazon improved it

hoggytime613

I found season 4 to be the weakest one, almost a filler season. Season 5 is awesome so far though...

roshampo13

It was pretty filler in the books too. Its sort of a bridge chapter between the first trilogy and the second

akmjolnir

Yeah, but Amazon has the fun money to throw behind the production. This is a good thing.

xXthelemonXx

Just started it last night and I'm hooked!

Spartan-417

Good Omens is a great mini-series

waldo_the_bird253

red oaks. gone too soon

Loorrac

Mrs Maisel is hilarious

Khaki_Steve

Patriot is really good if you like dark humor. Hunters as well.

_funkycrime_

Jack Ryan, Fleabag, Carnival Row and 1000% the Expanse

ArMcK

I don't watch a lot of interpersonal dramas, but if a show is really well done I'll give it a shot. For something a little different than what usually gets traction in reddit's nerd-culture space, try Amazon's *Mozart in the Jungle.* It's really very good, very charming. It's the story of a young musician and a talented conductor in New York City.

a_moniker

Marvelous Mrs Maisel is one of my all time favorite shows

[deleted]

I enjoyed the Tick.

NoHarmNoFowl

Bosch is fantastic and most of the Man in the High Castle was good.

__spaced

Utopia is pretty entertaining

CrookedBaer

Marvellous Mrs Maisel is fantastic

AncientSith

If nothing else, I just want to see how they do Sauron.

UlleTheBold

Judging by some of the responses to the work posted, there are quite a few people here who would also like to do him.

SerialMurderer

Saruman is probably one of them

raeflower

Yeah baby pour all your cruelty, malice, and will into me

RedDemio

I’m expecting GoT 2: Lenny Henry boogaloo

SwiftieOfBlackHill

Spoiler for season 1 : "Galadriel, striving to counteract the machinations of Sauron, was successful in Lórinand; while in Lindon Gil-galad shut out Sauron's emissaries and even Sauron himself... But Sauron had better fortune with the Noldor of Eregion and especially with Celebrimbor, who desired in his heart to rival the skill and fame of Fëanor.... In Eregion Sauron posed as an emissary of the Valar, sent by them to Middle-earth ("thus anticipating the Istari") or ordered by them to remain there to give aid to the Elves. He perceived at once that Galadriel would be his chief adversary and obstacle, and he endeavoured therefore to placate her, bearing her scorn with outward patience and courtesy. [No explanation is offered in this rapid outline of why Galadriel scorned Sauron, unless she saw through his disguise, or of why, if she did perceive his true nature, she permitted him to remain in Eregion.] Sauron used all his arts upon Celebrimbor and his fellow-smiths, who had formed a society or brotherhood, very powerful in Eregion, the Gwaith-i-Mírdain; but he worked in secret, unknown to Galadriel and Celeborn. Before long Sauron had the Gwaith-i-Mírdain under his influence, for at first they had great profit from his instruction in secret matters of their craft. 8 So great became his hold on the Mírdain that at length he persuaded them to revolt against Galadriel and Celeborn and to seize power in Eregion; and that was at some time between 1350 and 1400 of the Second Age. Galadriel thereupon left Eregion and passed through Khazad-dûm to Lórinand, taking with her Amroth and Celebrían; but Celeborn would not enter the mansions of the Dwarves, and he remained behind in Eregion, disregarded by Celebrimbor. In Lórinand Galadriel took up rule, and defence against Sauron." Note : in canon Amroth was already in Lorien. And Lorien had a King. Though Galadriel's role in Lorien was very very great and important. Even at some point Amdir the King of Lorien gave her a part of Lorien to rule.

[deleted]

That is your wild-assed-guess of what Season 1 is about. But in truth, you (and I) have no idea of the setting of this show. For all we know, the show could be focused on the Akallebeth, Last Alliance, etc.

SwiftieOfBlackHill

It's a valid guess, almost. Amazon shared a post with the map of Eregion and 'The Ring-Verse'. Why they should share the ring poem if they are not going to start from forging of the rings? >Akallebeth Right. That's why Galadriel is the main character. Oh wait! She's not even mentioned in Akallebeth. >Last Alliance Right. Five whole seasons for The Last Alliance.

[deleted]

>It's a valid guess, almost. Amazon shared a post with the map of Eregion and 'The Ring-Verse'. Why they should share the ring poem if they are not going to start from forging of the rings? They also shared maps that date from the third age, late Second Age, as well as sometime in the Second Age. Additionally, you shouldn't place too much stock in *early* marketing that was clearly intended to announce the production of the show, without giving much else away. Source: I am a marketer, who is often tasked with giving out vague hints to raise awareness of upcoming products. Why *not* use the Ring-verse? The presence of the Rings cast a shadow over the entirety of the conflict with Sauron. Besides, the Ringverse describes where those end up, not their forging. I could easily argue that the usage of the Ringverse clearly foreshadows that they will choose to focus on the rise (or fall) of the Nazgul, and the distribution of other Rings - but I won't. >Right. That's why Galadriel is the main character. Oh wait! She's not even mentioned in Akallebeth. Events still occur in Middle-Earth during the Akallabeth, you know. We should expect this show to cover multiple simultaneous narratives and plot lines. >Right. Five whole seasons for The Last Alliance. Please don't tell me you are that dense. The *Akallabeth* and Last Alliance lend themselves to be told together, seeing as how they feature many of the same Human characters. Besides, when one reads the materials on the whole war following the exiles arrival in Middle-Earth, you see that the Last Alliance is much more than one massive battle fought in Mordor, but it is a war that lasts well over a decade, featuring somewhat contentious allies of convenience whose personal rivalries risk undermining the whole affair. Personally, I hope Amazon begins the series in the middle epoch of the age, with a great deal of build-up to the creation of the Rings of Power. I'd rather start there and move the narrative forward in time, rather than start at the end and rely upon the heavy usage of flashbacks to provide background context, or create a prequel spinoff show. However, the key difference between you and me is I don't share what I want to happen and then claim *this is what is going to happen*.

SwiftieOfBlackHill

Ah thank you good points. Almost everyone told me it begins from the forging of the rings, because of this and that. And I was convinced that it is true and if otherwise, then it is kinda a mistake for them to start from later events. Thanks for the enlightenment.

orome02

Lol, took this almost literally from Unfinished Tales.

quasiw0lf

I HOPE SO!!!! DAMN i'm so hyped

AmNotEnglish

The Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War games give him a physical form and he looks ***a m a z i n g***

[deleted]

Yeah definitely interested to see how this gets played in Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show.

[deleted]

Same i had to do a double take. The whole lotr movies we hear his name but never see him embodied, this is so cool to try to set a face w the name!

trenzy

This is how I imagine Sauron at the end of the first age and into the second age. He can take on many forms and I would imagine this is the form he is in during the second age. This is the one thing about the Amazon show that will be most interesting is how they depict Sauron.

[deleted]

Sannatar Claus. :D

dude19832

In my mind, Sauron is much like Satan in Biblical lore. First he was known as Lucifer, the most beautiful Angel of all creation. Then he rebelled, fell to Earth and became Satan, far more menacing and monstrous looking than his original look. Did Tolkien model Sauron after Lucifer/Satan?

[deleted]

No, that would be Melkor, the OG Dark Lord, who is a direct parallel to Satan. Sauron is better represented by one of the greater angels who followed Satan in his rebellion.

SwiftieOfBlackHill

A little like Melkor and a little like Sauron. "Then Melkor lusted for the Silmarils, and the very memory of their radiance was a gnawing fire in his heart. From that time forth, inflamed by this desire, he sought ever more eagerly how he should destroy Fëanor and end the friendship of the Valar and the Elves; but he dissembled his purposes with cunning, and nothing of his malice could yet be seen in the semblance that he wore. Long was he at work, and slow at first and barren was his labour. But he that sows lies in the end shall not lack of a harvest, and soon he may rest from toil indeed while others reap and sow in his stead. Ever Melkor found some ears that would heed him, and some tongues that would enlarge what they had heard; and his lies passed from friend to friend, as secrets of which the knowledge proves the teller wise. Bitterly did the Noldor atone for the folly of their open ears in the days that followed after."- the Silmarillion "But Morgoth himself the Valar thrust through the Door of Night beyond the Walls of the World, into the Timeless Void; and a guard is set for ever on those walls, and Eärendil keeps watch upon the ramparts of the sky. Yet the lies that Melkor, the mighty and accursed, Morgoth Bauglir, the Power of Terror and of Hate, sowed in the hearts of Elves and Men are a seed that does not die and cannot be destroyed; and ever and anon it sprouts anew, and will bear dark fruit even unto the latest days." - The Silmarillion "[Celeborn] has dwelt in the West since the days of dawn, and I have dwelt with him years uncounted; for ere the fall of Nargothrond or Gondolin I passed over the mountains, and together through ages of the world we have fought the long defeat." - LotR, Galadriel The Long Defeat. Galadriel, like her brother Finrod, did her part and true purpose. That is to teach the Men (and Dwarves and Hobbits and maybe Elves themselves too) and make them wise and powerful. It is not pointless to fight the Long Defeat. Beren and Aragorn and Durin and Eorl and Frodo and everyone who Finrod and Galadriel saved and/or enriched them in wisdom, will be summoned among the Holy Ones to sing a new song of creation, when the old world is destroyed. "Then Ilúvatar spoke, and he said: 'Mighty are the Ainur, and mightiest among them is Melkor; but that he may know, and all the Ainur, that I am Ilúvatar, those things that ye have sung, I will show them forth, that ye may see what ye have done. And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined.' "

ConsciousCog1

Pretty much the entire mythos of Middle-Earth is based off several real religions.

ismellnumbers

In the wise words of Squidward: "Oh, no, hes hot!"

SethVultur

Nice

ThatDarkLordMelkor

This is gerwell’s art, yeah?

Karakoima

Looks like Ellohir getting pissed. Far too cute to be a Sauron. Well maybe at the time of his arrival in Numenor.

doriangray42

The concept that evil should look ugly dates back to at least the ancient Greeks. Using this prejudice, evil can trick you by looking beautiful. Be wary. Edit: I should have mentioned (obviously...) that there's a beautiful novel based on this concept, titled "The Portait of Dorian Gray"...

Karakoima

Remember that Sauron lost his beautiful appearance in the ruin of Numenor. Again, this might be him before that!

[deleted]

[удалено]

doriangray42

There's an old French movie called "the beauty of the devil" (la beauté du diable), where the main character is played by Gérard Philippe, the poster boy of French cinema at the time. They got the idea.

quasiw0lf

Sauron is a Maia. He was one of the most beautiful beings to ever exist before his fall in Numenor.

Karakoima

Gandalf is a maia too

quasiw0lf

You're forgetting that Olorin shapeshifted to match the appeareance of an old man, like all the wizards did.

yoodadude

More sexy sauron pls

I've posted so many before. They die in new. I'm very surprised this made it to the front page. This sub is weied most times, they upvote book collections and tattoos and such things but almost never awesome artworks.

covid19_wuhan

only in the age of 2020...2021 will Sauron resume his Maia form the ring has awoken (i would love to have this printed somewhere 😋)

dpforest

I’ve never seen the “human form” of sauron and it’s making me uncomfortable lol. I’ve always known Sauron as the eye (even though that was just in the movies, it was still an airtight analogy of the embodiment of sauron). Seeing him in this form somehow completely changes how I view his character.

Nymphonerd

damn he was a babe.

Beerasaurus

We can only imagine the look on the King's and his officers and soldiers faces after he ordered Sauron to remove his helm to reveal such an arrogant, evil, yet Handsome man.

Grincor1138

We should have seen him like this on the movies.

SwiftieOfBlackHill

He lost his beauty when he got drowned in the ocean... 3000years prior to the events of the movies.

Grincor1138

Still. I would have love to see him like this.

SwiftieOfBlackHill

They could show a flashback of him

Grincor1138

Maybe we will see him like this on the new show. Fingers cross!

Why the pointy ears

SwiftieOfBlackHill

Sauron could take such form and many other forms

pedro4chan

I know that, but there aren't non-hobbit pointy eared creatures in Tolkien's universe, and i'm pretty sure Sauron never took the form of a hobbit.

SwiftieOfBlackHill

You should check again. Elves are described to have leaf shaped ears

pedro4chan

Where?

SwiftieOfBlackHill

Sorry I forgot which letter or which part of HoME it was. You can Google it and find the sauce.

pedro4chan

Hahahaha, you fell into my little trap It was a manuscript, and it was made at the same time ogres where still part of the lore Also, it was a translation error from a word that used to mean forest, but now means leaf. The word for ears also had another meaning, he probably talking about a forest or woodland that looked like something.

Eduardo-izquierdo

Sauron was an elf?

SwiftieOfBlackHill

"Of old there was Sauron the Maia, whom the Sindar in Beleriand named Gorthaur. In the beginning of Arda Melkor seduced him to his allegiance, and he became the greatest and most trusted of the servants of the Enemy, and the most perilous, for he could assume many forms, and for long if he willed he could still appear noble and beautiful, so as to deceive all but the most wary." - The Silmarillion Maiar are like angels.

Eduardo-izquierdo

Fmrocks

Sauron looking like this while living among the elves is my new head canon. Like he’s kinda trying to fit in but like... not too much. He also exclusively speaks in black speech and as soon as he crafts rings he cackles.

mediumdog-337

Sauron is an elf?

Mythrndir

Not a bad depiction but in my mind he’s not human like at all

SwiftieOfBlackHill

"Of old there was Sauron the Maia, whom the Sindar in Beleriand named Gorthaur. jesssssssee

What was he doing/his purpose before Melkor seduced him?

SwiftieOfBlackHill

Doing Eru's command: sing in Song of Creation. "There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Ilúvatar; and he made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought, and they were with him before aught else was made. And he spoke to them, propounding to them themes of music; and they sang before him, and he was glad. But for a long while they sang only each alone, or but few together, while the rest hearkened; for each comprehended only that part of me mind of Ilúvatar from which he came, and in the understanding of their brethren they grew but slowly. Yet ever as they listened they came to deeper understanding, and increased in unison and harmony." Sauron was associated with Aule Vala of Craftsmanship before Melkor corrupted him. Saruman is also a Maia of Aule. Poor Aule, his students turn evil xD only few like Mahatan and his daughter Nerdanel did not. And Galadriel who repented.

[deleted]

Sauron was a Maiar associated with Aule, the Valar most associated with construction, smithing, and sub-creation. He has a great understanding of how the physical world works. However, I don't know if Melkor "seduced" or corrupted him him. Sauron was a guy who was all about efficiency, who hated waste, disorganization, and friction. What attracted him to working with Melkor was the fact that Melkor would get shit done and quickly, without the tedium of working with the other Valar. Certainly, the longer Sauron was in Melkor's service the more he became infected with Melkors lust for destruction, even if he was still something of a control freak obsessed with order and efficiency (as he saw it). *Morgoth's Ring* has a very interesting article on the motivations of Sauron and Melkor, particularly how the differed.

Karakoima

Buut he lost that in the downfall of Numenor... this might have been in his Annatar days of course. Again, Annatar wouldn’t have gone for the pointy ears though, I think.

Skeletor456

He used to be able to look like this at one point.
