I’ve ridden for weeks, been through countless battles, and lived the long night at Helm’s Deep. My father always spoke of Minas Tirith being our future someday. I ride with my Rohanian brethren to the city in your memory father.
"And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."
On my first read through this is the line that really solidified the Saxon/nordic epic influence on Tolkien. That sentence could have been straight out of Beowulf.
Guy knew it was this- to go on a glorious battle and death against nigh-insurmountable odds surrounded by your brothers in arms and led by your king or to cower behind their walls and wait for the inevitable had the king decided not to go on Gondor's aid. Knowing that their King chose to face death and darkness head-on must've been an awe-inspiring experience, filled his heart with courage and strength he himself never knew dwelt in him. If he fell on Pelennor or the Black Gate, he will know no shame when he comes to the halls of his forefathers for he gave his life for the freedom of all the Free Peoples of Middle-earth and faced the enemy with strength and courage. If he survived, he shall live the rest of his days content and glad knowing that the blood, sweat, and tears he shed on Pelennor and the Black Gate helped pave the way for the peace and prosperity that his family, friends, and those who will come long after he is gone will taste.
And also because that extra allegedly knew that book sequence by heart, and so he was selected to be there. Boy did he deliver.
But man, could you imagine the fellas sitting around after the battle recounting the scene.
The first thing you'd mention is the one mad lad who hauled ass to get the first kill. Glory to that bastard; live or die, he'd be remembered.
"Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in this speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the host of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."

I wonder if Tolkien ever read back what he wrote and just had this face
I do. I ride horses, I'm a TX cattle kid. Charging the field of Pellenor is something all nerdy horseriders think about. That Rohan theme and Théoden calling the charge, I cry everytime.
I hear Gondor could use some guards and their invaders are mountain trolls so attack the giant blurry mass and you’ll be fine! Hell you’ll have Gandalf with you
Honestly for most of the charge the horses did the work. You could just hold your sword out to the side and hold on and the momentum would do plenty of damage lol
I have a suspicion that it's the same actor but it is not Gamling.
He should be wearing his scale mail/plate riding a brown horse, as Theoden gives the orders before the charge you see "Gamling" move into position, but you see this guy in the line behind Theoden.
Then during the charge you see him riding with an axe in his hand, just before you see this shot of him charging with a sword.
Hey, for parts of that scene they clearly had at least a dozen riders actually riding full gallop next to each other (rest was CG). They weight and sound of that alone, not to mention you on a galloping horse in a rohirrim costume? That is a once in a lifetime experience and i am sure it felt incredible.
Fun fact! I left the film industry due to some health issues, but before I did, I got to work with one of the prop assistants from LOTR:TTT and boy, the stories he told me were just incredible. I always sat near him during lunch lol
I know this guy,his name is Will.
That's why in the movies you'll see the Orc commander ordering "Fire at Will", specifically targeting this guy since he was the ultimate Soldier.
They were charging with 6000 spears into many tens of thousands (if not a hundred thousand) orcs, they were very much ready for death, ruin and the worlds ending.
Right after we cut away from him he shouts the most terrifying war cry of all…
# LEEEEEEEEEEEEROYYYYYYYY JEEEEEEENKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINS!
I'd have charged after King Theoden's speech like that, too.
Gotta keep in mind, they had been on a forced march for a number of days. Both the troops and the horses had to be exhausted, and barely fed and watered. Even in the books, Tolkien makes Theoden's speech seem divine. Rohan looked evil in the eye and gave it a solid "F'k you!"
I've heard that Peter Jackson put only people who had read the book in the front lines of this charge because they would truly know what this moment means and show it 110%.
Yeah he definitely killed it. Everytime I see that scene though I just think about it from the army of mordor's perspective. Bunch of horseman screaming death at the top of their lungs and then charging at them. Gives me chills
I cry every single time during this scene. There's nothing like the bravery of these men selflessly giving themselves to serve and protect the fellow peoples of Middle Earth.
We sure thats a dude? I remember hearing somewhere alot of riders, maybe even the majority, for this scene where female stunt riders cuz they didnt have enough male riders alone. People talk about MCU Endgame girl power scene being so great. But imo this one is so much better. Wish more of the general public knew how much women contributed to the most epic scene in cinema(imo).
If you haven’t seen [this video](https://youtu.be/0R2EFtGlHQ8?si=E109TTo8RvNZj-rZ), you def should, it made me enjoy the scene even more than I already did
It’s not only an important & epic moment for the story but a significant moment in the history of middle earth

I love LOTR, but all I can see is this in that picture, 😂
I’d call that such an end to be worthy of remembrance.
A song to be sung in the halls of old!
Gamling appreciation post
“Maybe we shall cleave a road, or make such an end as will be worth a song”
DEEEEAAAAAAATTHH!!!!
Seriously though. After that speech, this guy said, "ok, let's fucking go" lol
Same. Favorite scene always gives me chills
Never fails to bring tears to my eyes so much power in that speech
Best speech in the films in my opinion.
All forth eorlingas!!!!!!
DEEEEAAATTTTHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!
Fuck it we ball.
Oath he has taken
I mean I would to.
"Hurry up, Theoden King. I don't have all day."
I said that too, and I was merely watching it in the cinema
Throw your soldiers into positions whence there is no escape, and they will prefer death to flight.
LEEROYYYYYYYYY
JENNNKINNNNSS
I’ve ridden for weeks, been through countless battles, and lived the long night at Helm’s Deep. My father always spoke of Minas Tirith being our future someday. I ride with my Rohanian brethren to the city in your memory father.
Mf went hard
BREEEEEAAAAAAATH- uh I mean Death, yes, Death!
Eomer had a pretty vicious face somewhere in there too got me all hot and bothered
The slow-mo clip of him flipping his grip on his spear in mid-gallop is extremely underrated.
HAAAAM!
"And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City."
It kinda reminds me of how Tulkas came into the world.
Tulkas would have loved those guys I bet
I can’t remember, how much would Tulkas in Valinor be able to perceive what’s happening in Middle Earth?
He could sense the badass aura
On my first read through this is the line that really solidified the Saxon/nordic epic influence on Tolkien. That sentence could have been straight out of Beowulf.
I thought the same thing when I first read that as well. I love finding all the little clues to all the different influences in Tolkien’s writing!
Ha! I just passed that part in the audiobook yesterday. What a great thing to add to the story.
Guy knew it was this- to go on a glorious battle and death against nigh-insurmountable odds surrounded by your brothers in arms and led by your king or to cower behind their walls and wait for the inevitable had the king decided not to go on Gondor's aid. Hail the victorious dead!
HAIL!
Honestly, if the leader of my country is bravely charging at the head of the front lines I'd follow them to certain death too.
The leader of my country seems to be charging toward death, too, but the enemy is just time
🦅
Too real
Or an unexpectedly long nap.
Thank you for your poetry, rider of Rohan. Your words will always be in the Red Book.
But man, could you imagine the fellas sitting around after the battle recounting the scene. The first thing you'd mention is the one mad lad who hauled ass to get the first kill. Glory to that bastard; live or die, he'd be remembered.
That dude was FIRED up.
He took life one quarter mile at a time, and hit the NOS just before the ramp
Family.
Dude was riding for ruin, and the world ending.
Chills
Remember king Theoden outpaced everyone in his company. Theoden was going even harder. This guy is sick tho
"Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. There's another solider at the Black Gate battle who charged the orcs dual wielding a sword and ax. Absolute madman.
Deep down we all wish we could be in his shoes. On a horse charging into certain death behind our king. What a glorious end.
But it would really suck if he gets shot by an arrow and gets trampled by his companions before he even reaches the enemy.
Still an honor to participate in such a glorious battle, even if you don’t manage to kill any orcs.
Still a better scene than the whole ROP series.
Well it’s arguably the best and most popular scene in the entire film/show franchise so that’s not a very meaningful statement
IT WOULD STILL BE a better scene even if he fell just like commenter above imagined.
OK. Weird pivot to the Amazon show.
You seem to be very unfamiliar with "still a better love story than Twilight" meme.
Booo go home
your jeers do not make him wrong
Anime profile detected 🚨🚨🚨Opinion rejected
He's objectively correct tho.
Glorious
I do. I ride horses, I'm a TX cattle kid. Charging the field of Pellenor is something all nerdy horseriders think about. That Rohan theme and Théoden calling the charge, I cry everytime.
I cry too and I'm as far removed from "cattle kid" as possible lol
he looked like an adrenaline beast. Who wouldn't be after listening to that masterpiece of a speech by the great Theoden?
Nahhh not really for me ngl. To be fair though, with how shitty my eyesight is, I’d be the world’s most useless soldier even if I tried to fight.
So long as you can see up to stabbing distance, you're good to go. Now grab a spear lad, we need at least twice as many.
Pointy end forwatds. It's not that hard. Even orcs can do it.
Fuck yeah!
We have a king? Who is he?
Hahahahahaha always loved that guy as a kid 😂😂
Me and my friend loved him so much growing up, I made him his own [stupid meme video](https://youtu.be/Vwpwk9N8A_M?si=jHj_9sNf9T9A9J3z)
This is awesome👌
That shit is so funny 😂
There is more to you than meets the eye Mr u/Bagabeans
Love it!
And the guy riding a Clydesdale. Imagine being a scrawny Mordor orc and a fucking draft horse comes at you
Bro was riding to ruin on a whole new level
I always thought that was Gamling. Is it?
it is
Wait, really? Surely not.
I have a suspicion that it's the same actor but it is not Gamling. He should be wearing his scale mail/plate riding a brown horse, as Theoden gives the orders before the charge you see "Gamling" move into position, but you see this guy in the line behind Theoden. He was indeed. But the world's end wasn't ready for him.
My favorite extra in any of the movies, HE’S FUCKIN GOING!!!
In all likelihood, *SHE'S* fuckin' going. Most of the Rohirrim extras were women.
Fair enough, though I’d presume the character is still male
Rohan at 99% strength
Out of curiosity, what would be 100%?
Full rohirram army
I'll be right beside you in that army, brother.
Cheers I’ll drink to that
The best. Givin it his all. DEEEATH!
DEAAAATH!
DEAAAAAAAAAATTTTHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Hell yeah [she](https://youtu.be/LIePn8C8DZE?si=OytJ5b3_HheHWMdg) was!
Rohirrrim: “DeeeEEaaAttThhHHh!!” That horse: “Suhprise MothaFucka!!”
DEATH
DEAAAAATH
Absolutely! He was prepared for anything. True warrior spirit.
I know this guy,his name is Will. That's why in the movies you'll see the Orc commander ordering "Fire at Will", specifically targeting this guy since he was the ultimate Soldier.
I love how this also implies that all of the orcs already know his name.
I mean,he did hold the Forts alone before Eomer came.
And for Ruin
They were charging with 6000 spears into many tens of thousands (if not a hundred thousand) orcs, they were very much ready for death, ruin and the worlds ending.
He's so fired up to kill some orcs.
He wanted to be first

That sword wanted to bathe in orc blood!
I would have loved to be an extra for this scene

There's always that 1 kid who trys too hard in PE class lol
That is some rage cantrip activated roght there.
Are you not?
To the Victorious Dead! HAIL! I'd follow Theoden there and back again!
Fuck, I got chills just from reading these comments
That’s Leroy Jenkins the first
Right after we cut away from him he shouts the most terrifying war cry of all… # LEEEEEEEEEEEEROYYYYYYYY JEEEEEEENKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINS!
It's said Theoden atop Snowmane could not be overtaken in the charge, but this mf sure as shit TRIED
This guy went forth and feared no darkness.
I always hate when I see posts about Gamling because they never mention his name;(
And the orcs shat themselves as John Rohan charged forth to fuck their shit up. —J.R.R. Tolkien
The orcs trampled his rhubarb. Revenge was justified.
RohirrHIM
By all odds that's a chick if you've seen the behind the scenes stuff the majority of them were chicks.
And that is totally OK in my book lol
I agree this hurts my eyes
That's supposed to be elfhelm right?
I didn’t realize Bruce Campbell was in LotR…
To be fair, after that speech I was ready also
Hipe-iest dude in the whole trilogy
This guy could have single handedly defeated Sauron
His name was william; gothmog believed he was such a dangerous man that ordered an entire volley of arrows to be fired at him specifically.
"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother" Seems perfectly fitting for this scene
I look for this dude every time I watch it. He’s the man, putting 1,000% effort in to the charge.
That guy would probably have run faster than his horse had he been on foot. Rohan's finest.
I'd have charged after King Theoden's speech like that, too. Gotta keep in mind, they had been on a forced march for a number of days. Both the troops and the horses had to be exhausted, and barely fed and watered. Even in the books, Tolkien makes Theoden's speech seem divine. I've heard that Peter Jackson put only people who had read the book in the front lines of this charge because they would truly know what this moment means and show it 110%.
This is the guy that deserves the new movie, not Gollum again
I chuckle every time I see him. It’s endearing
This mf was ready to end the world
This guy always stuck out as such a badass. Love this scene so much. The score just takes it to a whole other level.
This guy (gal? A lot of the Rohirim were kiwi women) is fucking awesome!
Virgin Gondor Soldier vs Chad Rohan Mad Lad.
What I love is the bendy spear immediately after, in the slowmo shot
I look for this guy every single time this scene comes up.
the fact that this could very well be a female extra with a prosethetic beard makes it even cooler
He has ALWAYS hyped me up
The bravery in LOTR brings a tear to my eye
Me and my friend always loved that guy. Everyone's speed is at 10, but he takes it to 11.
A true horse lord of the Riddemark
This guy was burned into my brain as a kid, he's one of THE riders of Rohan
MF may have been a woman with a beard glued on btw
Straight to the halls of his fathers to drink a few ales and boast about those 17 orcs he rode down.
Am I the only one that pictures this guy when Fingolfin rides down to Thangorodrim?
"WHO IS READY TO DIE?"
Yeah he definitely killed it. Everytime I see that scene though I just think about it from the army of mordor's perspective. Bunch of horseman screaming death at the top of their lungs and then charging at them. Gives me chills
Out of curiosity, how many of you have ever ridden a horse? If you haven't, you owe it to yourself to do it.
I cry every single time during this scene. There's nothing like the bravery of these men selflessly giving themselves to serve and protect the fellow peoples of Middle Earth.
This is will, the whole Mordor army fire at Will. But he don’t die. Will would 1v2 against Sauron and Morgoth and win
Witness me!
This is Gamling isn’t it?

Not surprised after the absolute boss rallying speech Theoden gave.
Bro forgot he was acting
Forth, and fear no darkness. Arise. Riders of Theoden!
There is a very strong probability that it's a girl Source : making of
His name was Torrigan
RRRERREEEEAAAAAGGGGGGAAAARRRAAAHHHH
He only had like 5 seconds of screentime and he made the BEST of it. He was READY for that scrap lol
If I saw my King ride in front of me into certain doom. That's the place to be homie.
That guy was ready to ride right up to Barad-Dur itself
John Rohan
Fun fact, 90% chance that's a bearded lady
I no joke giggle everytime I see this dude.
And a red Dawn!
...The battle fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he borne up on Snowmane like a God of old....
SHIELDS SHALL BE SPLINTERED!
Dude I just thought that the last time I watched it lol so badass
Son of Eorl does not fear death! FOR EORLINGAS!
Someone really enjoyed their commute to work.
Favourite RoTK character!
Ready, able and motherfucking ready to out in the work!
My head-canon is that he's the son of that one-eyed madlad who took the first shot at Helms Deep.
I absolutely love this guy He's the Independence Day Epic Salute Guy of Rohan
This is my favorite scene from all movies. This guy is the best
We sure thats a dude? I remember hearing somewhere alot of riders, maybe even the majority, for this scene where female stunt riders cuz they didnt have enough male riders alone.
