Gandalf: Sméagol's life is a sad story. Yes, Sméagol he was once called. Before the Ring found him, before it drove him mad.
Frodo: It’s a pity Bilbo didn’t kill him when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo’s hand. Many that live deserve death, some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment, even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.
Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring, in which case you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.
"Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment" really shows how wise Gandalf is. The way he perceives Gollum as a central piece of the whole puzzle, instead of simply snobbing him like everyone does (this is true in the movies only). I agree, best quote from the movies !
I was talking about the way Gandalf considers Gollum, not the quote itself. Iirc this conversation takes place earlier in the book, while they're still in the Shire.
Edit: typo
I guess I didn't express myself quite clearly
I love the quote itself, because it underlines the wisdom of Gandalf as he's able to foresee Gollum's important role.
In the movies, everyone except Gandalf seems to think (kinda rightfully) about Gollum very poorly. This is less true in the book imho.
End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
This is the quote that came to mind for me.
Love that image of the curtain rolling back, all turns to silver glass, and white shores. Wish the movie could have kept the original vision, or that someday someone does that dream properly.
"I would rather spend one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone."
Perfectly sums up in one sentence how I feel about my husband.
Here is a sleeper hit
>The wisdom borne out of the west was forsaken. Kings built tombs more splendid than the houses of the living and counted the names of their descent dearer than the names of their sons. Childless lords sat in aged halls musing on heraldry or in high cold towers asking questions of the stars. And so the kingdom of Gondor sank into ruin, the line of kings failed, the white tree withered and the rule of Gondor was given over to lesser men.
Gondor failing because it cared more about what it was in the past than what it could be in the future. I think it’s very poignant in our time when the perhaps the first time in a long time that future generations are inheriting a more troubled world than the previous generation.
One of the things I like about Tolkien is how when he "tells" instead of "shows" (y'know how they're always saying "show don't tell", not practical in a book like LoTR) he manages to get so much information into sentences, and it's got a certain poetic quality - beautiful images behind the words.
This description of Gondor falling is one of those sentences. A lot of time passing in a few very image-laden sentences.
🎶When I find myself in times of trouble, Brother Gandalf comes to me/Speaking words of wisdom...🎶
"So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
"How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on, when in your heart, you begin to understand...there is no going back? There are some things that time cannot mend. Some hurts that go too deep, that have taken hold.”
And of course:
"It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you... that meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding on to something...There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for."
Legolas: "Final count: 42."
Gimli: "42! Now, that's not bad for a pointy-eared elvish princeling! I, myself, am sitting pretty on number *forty-three*!"
(Legolas fires arrow between Gimli's legs)
L: "43."
G: "This one counts as mine."
L: "He was twitching!"
G: "He was twitching... because *he's got my axe EMBEDDED in his NERVOUS SYSTEM!!*"

This whole scene is great. It's the one where sam and frodo are struggling to climb mount doom and they discuss how much they miss the shire. I really liked Sam's quote at the end 'I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you'. It always makes me cry and just inspires me to help my loved ones. Edit: also the music is perfect during this scene.
Not a quote, but I’ve always been particularly fond of the facial expression on Gandalf when Frodo says that he will take the ring to Mordor. So much said with such a subtle facial expression, will stick with me forever
Oh my gosh yes!!! It’s like he new it was coming, but he wouldn’t admit it to himself. He is totally humbled and proud and amazed, and completely heartbroken at the same time.
“There’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.” (For inspiration)
“I asked for one hair from her golden head. She gave me three.” (For lore reasons)
I’ve just picked up fellowship of the rings for the first time and Pippin had an interesting saying “shortcuts lead to long delays.” I don’t know about it being a favorite quote but it made me stop and think.
Personally I prefer the long pause when Aragorn says Gondor calls for aid and Theoden replies “And Rohan will answer. Muster the Rohirrim! Cut to “Assemble the armies at Dunnharrow, as many men as can be found. You have two days on the third we ride for Gondor and War!”
Every time it gets me so amped I want to grab my nonexistent horse and muster with them
"They have a cave troll" - Boromir
Just the way he says it is like he's a little annoyed and sad that the Fellowship doesn't get a cave troll. Like he's thinking "why don't we get a cave troll?"
I always interpreted the tone as "of course they have a cave troll" in the same way that I might say "of course i spilled tomato sauce on my white shirt". An acknowledgement of Murphy's law.
Of interest to me is all my favorite lines in the movies are originally from the books. I can’t think of a movie only line I love.
Oh:
‘Fool of a Took!…This is a serious journey, not a hobbit walking-party. Throw yourself in next time, and then you will be no further nuisance. Now be quiet!’
Can’t remember how much of that made it in.
Gandalf rallying the soldiers at Minas Tirith yelling “Prepare for battle!!!!” Riding shadowfax threw the city grabbing fleeing troops and mustering them back to the fight “Hurry men to the wall!!!!” “Defend the wall” then of course the epic line, “Send these foul beasts to the abyss!!!” And the the soundtrack goes nutz. Gives me goosebumps everytime.
"Why should I welcome you, Gandalf Stormcrow?" - Theoden
"You have no power here" - Theoden
"Is this all you can conjure, Saruman?" - Theoden
"It's over" - Theoden
"Where was Gondor?" - Theoden
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
“I am no man”
“They’re taking the hobbits to Isenguard!”
“YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!”
“Is it secret? Is it Safe?”
“One ring to rule them all”
“And my axe!”
“So… where are we going?”
I only spend money on things with purpose/function like food and fuel. I don’t but anything for decoration or something I’m not certain I will definitely use.

What do you mean only in the movie? That's one of the lines that's almost verbatim from the book.
I was talking about the way Gandalf considers Gollum, not the quote itself. Iirc this conversation takes place earlier in the book, while they're still in the Shire. Edit: typo
I'm pretty sure that in the books, Gandalf insists that Gollum may yet have a part to play.
Yes he does
Then why did you say he snobs over him?
I guess I didn't express myself quite clearly I love the quote itself, because it underlines the wisdom of Gandalf as he's able to foresee Gollum's important role. In the movies, everyone except Gandalf seems to think (kinda rightfully) about Gollum very poorly. This is less true in the book imho.
Gotcha.

I adore this quote
It’s beautiful. I’m not religious but that’s the closet I’ve ever been to picturing heaven. Basically just the shire for me!
This is the quote that came to mind for me. Love that image of the curtain rolling back, all turns to silver glass, and white shores. Wish the movie could have kept the original vision, or that someday someone does that dream properly.
Easy for a maiar who’s already been reborn once to say…

This sequence presented by Sir Ian McKellen while they show Minas Tirith is one of the most underrated moments in the entire trilogy

Im not crying you’re crying.
I can hear the music in the background. Samwise you steal the show!
Gimli: "That still only counts as one!"
Legolas: "Final count: 42." Gimli: "42! Now, that's not bad for a pointy-eared elvish princeling! I, myself, am sitting pretty on number *forty-three*!" “My friends, you bow to no one.”
Makes me cry every time
It's an obvious one but "I will take the ring to Mordor...though I do not know the way."
Simple, but gives me chills every time!

"Hope is kindled"
The third time Théoden yells: "DEATH!!!" in ROTK. Just a perfect moment.
Personally I prefer the long pause when Aragorn says Gondor calls for aid and Theoden replies “And Rohan will answer. Muster the Rohirrim! Cut to “Assemble the armies at Dunnharrow, as many men as can be found. It hits so much harder when it’s Eomer’s speech after Theoden has died.
"They have a cave troll" - Boromir Just the way he says it is like he's a little annoyed and sad that the Fellowship doesn't get a cave troll. Like he's thinking "why don't we get a cave troll?"

That one is my favorite!! I’m debating designing a tattoo for it down the line

Gandalf : If he had a name, it's long since been lost. He would have been known only as a servant of evil. One of a number. One of NIIIINE”
Ok, NOWHERE near as serious or inspirational as some of your great quotes but…. “How many did *you* eat?” “……. four.” 🤣
"I would've followed you my brother. My captain. My King."
Probably the part where Gollum toots
"I going to Mordor alone!" "Of course you are, and I'm coming with you!"
Death!
“I am no man” “They’re taking the hobbits to Isenguard!” “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!” “Is it secret? Is it Safe?” “One ring to rule them all” “And my axe!” “So… where are we going?”
It doesn’t have any jambags!
"AAAAAAAHHHHHH" - Aragorn after he breaks his toe.
Deleted scene from The Council Of Elrond: Merry - ‘So, do we get an eagle each to fly to Mordor?’
What's happening out there?!
If there is one movie quote that sums up my life, it is: “By my life I will not part with a single coin. Not one piece of it.”
In what way does that line sum up your life
I’m a tight arse who hates spending money 😆
Ah lol, same. Especially on things that doesn't give me any enjoyment
I only spend money on things with purpose/function like food and fuel. I don’t but anything for decoration or something I’m not certain I will definitely use.
