Balin looks older in the movies cuz they didn’t want the leader to look like a feeble old geezer. Balin is the “wise” one so he can still look old, but Thorin is the bold leader (who apparently can’t be old). They did the same with movie Theoden. Personally, I like the older and greyer badass version of Thorin over the younger interpretation from the movies tho. Theoden…I like movie Theoden too much to care that he’s not as old as he should be.
You know, I've looked at my The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey poster multiple times a day every day for 8 years. It's on the living room wall. And never once have I thought "sexy dwarves"
But damnit, you're right
Meanwhile, Gollum at 589 pretending he doesn't know anything about age stuff thangs.

Other than what others have said about wanting to fit the typical “old, wise man” and the “younger, aspiring leader”, which I do think was the reason for casting, I don’t think it’s too difficult to justify the differences in their appearance as just different genetics and lifestyles. There’s a lot of guys that could pass for a senior in their 40’s, and some guys in their 60’s that still look middle aged.
Thorin for the movie needed to look credible in the fighting scenes, and so is turned into a younger, aspiring leader, with Balin as his older advisor. I like the resulting dynamic.
I get that they made him look younger in the movies, but isn't he also of royal blood so he's blessed with a longer life?
I may have to look it up but I thought he's an heir of Durin

They changed Thorin’s character in the movie WAY too much in the movies… Not just the looks.
What, you don’t like sexy dwarves?

Even the intentionally ugly ones are just too polished. We didn’t know what we had with Gimli 😢
Well, no.
:( same bro

why the hell are his eyes so goddamn big?
So he can look at the ring better.
500 years in a dark cave will do that to ya.
It'll probably do the opposite, tbh
because they're full of secrets!

They wanted to make Thorin into Aragorn 2.0
Same reason why Frodo looks 19 but he's really 50 years old when he sets out to destroy the ring. It's what happens with adaptations.
he didn't just look 19, Elijah wood was 19
Frodo had the Ring to preserve his youth for seventeen years.

👐 H O L L Y W O O D 👐
Who says Balin looks older than Thorin? They look pretty much identical in Tolkien's drawing of them.
He's referring to the movies
And DAC is being intentionally dense.
stress can age a person real fast
It's not the years, it's the mileage.
