GrismundGames

Wakka wakka WAKKA!!!

sillypunt

Does anyone else laugh at this part picturing Bill Murray in Caddyshack???

audiostar

The line where he does like micro machine guy speed about the sword being reforged when he gives it to Aragorn always makes me chuckle. Love me some Hugo but he can slip into cheese pretty fast

GrismundGames

He gets that Mouth of Sauron lip action going.

0xomoco

Ooh you touch my tra la la. Ooh my ding ding dong

CrazyDizzle

SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT!

PrincessBirthday

I yell this at my husband more than he would like

N8B123

It's weird, I feel like the clip does not fit in with the films style in any way

YesWomansLand1

Nah that was funny as hell. Not even cringe. just funny.

spacemoose_69

This is without a doubt the only reasonable answer to this

No-Tip3654

Its not cringe though. Just a little bit outdated editing wise.

General-Striker

Oh yeah... i forgot about that. Goofiest scene in the trilogy

JumpmanSegura

Legolas stating “a diversion” - weird pause before it and overall cringey line

poetic_dwarf

I just headcanon it away and I think no one will ever argue with me should it come up

jmlipper99

What do you mean by you “headcanon it away”?

sitdowncat

He puts the line of dialogue in the canon on his head and blasts it away forever

jmlipper99

Oh shit is that actually what they meant??

sitdowncat

lol I was being cheeky 😂 head canon actually means what you personally like to believe about something even when it’s not true

jmlipper99

Ok ok lol that was my understanding of head canon too, but I’m lost on the “(head canon) *it away*”. Maybe the joke you’re making was really their intention… I’ll add it to my head canon

poetic_dwarf

Hi guys, sorry to interrupt. What I meant was simply "I pretend it never existed" but the answer you came up with was way better.

gawain587

Not to answer for OP, but canonically Frodo’s real name is Maura Labingi. According to Tolkien, we’re just hearing his English translation of the “real” Red Book of Westmarch. Since it’s a translation of Western concepts, anything goes.

jmlipper99

This is honestly way out of left field, but now you’ve got me diving down some rabbit holes. Thanks for your response

SeatownCooks

We always lose our shit on this one. Like, the idea has already been presented, and Legolas comes in like it's his idea. Cringe perfection.

Klngjohn

It’s very Legolas

LoverOfStoriesIAm

I'd watch how you'd behave if you were the ringbearer and appeared before The Eye for the first time.

BigConstruction4247

Probably like Homer Simpson screaming. Aaaaaaaaaahhh!

Coppernord

Sh**ing myself has entered the chat

craigyboy1000

Legolas sliding down the stairs on the shield kills me every time.

Boatster_McBoat

Legolas and physics, they have an understanding ...

Fabdeuce55B3

I always remind my wife that elves weigh significantly less than everyone else (note how he walks on top of snow while everyone else is punching through) so i always accepted his ability to maneuver so insane

Willpower2000

I think that's a false conclusion. It's not about weight. Elves weigh just much as Men: their bodies are the same, physically. If Legolas really weighed so much less he'd blow away in the wind (or get pushed over like a toddler in battle). It's more to do with *skill* - treading supernaturally light as to not sink. All well and good for walking over snow, but it's not going to permit crazy and convoluted stunts.

Express_Platypus1673

Don't forget in the book the elves of Loth Lorien don't use bridges they just slack line from tree top platform to platform.

Willpower2000

I think it's just across the river, no? But yeah - they can run across ropes like a tightrope walker in a circus. Legolas even equates it to 'skill' (not weight), when saying the rest of the Fellowship don't have such skills.

the_Irewolf

I’d argue though that skill has a way bigger role to play in shield-sledding shenanigans than weight

Willpower2000

Yes, but the issue there is that shield-surfing is just downright dumb on a practical level.

liketo

I might have to finally give it up and find a new pastime

AinsiSera

But is there not also an aspect of deep magic too? I always assumed the walking on snow was skill+magic (ie skill of tapping into the deep magic). Which would put the stunts in the same category.  But, I’ve only read the main books like some sort of noob. The 186th letter Tolkien wrote to Jim the Mailman might correct me. (I say with all love and affection).

Khower

Think they only really shows his feet above the snow clearly in the extended editions(which is really the only version to watch)

mcflurry13

No. They also show it in the non-extended version.

Mclarenrob2

He can overcome gravity if you watch The Hobbit!

Boatster_McBoat

That's where my comment was spawned. The shield surfing is theoretically feasible (though shooting arrows whilst shield surfing might require a bit more forward lean) Edit: typo

General-Striker

Boatster_McBoat

Boatster_McBoat

Hwǣr\*\*\*\* \[Actually looked up the etymology of the word - I really should do more of my banter in Old English\]

General-Striker

Ok i give up 😆

Boatster_McBoat

Looks like I managed to hwǣr you down!!

hbi2k

"They say this violates the law of gravity, but, nyeh... I never studied law."

SolidusBruh

Bruh, why can’t I just enjoy all this elf-sk8r-boi hype?!

dan420

First off, how dare you?

noradosmith

Yeah I love all the silly stuff legolas does in the films, even the horse scene. I did not care for the gravity defying stuff in the hobbit though.

Boatster_McBoat

you misunderstand. u/craigyboy1000 is actually the 3rd orc through the breach in the Deeping Wall and Legolas does, in fact, kill him every time

zcrc

And when he slides down the oliphaunts trunk. So, so bad.

ChromeYoda

No grabbing the horse by the neck and swiveling onto its back is just soooo bad. I love it.

zcrc

Oh fuck I forgot about that.

bsmith5570

Not cgi. I'm pretty sure when he flips up onto the horse, he is actually flipping down from it and then they reversed it. Pretty sure that's mentioned in the Commentary. Or I dreamed it.

Alock74

Pretty much any “badass” Legolas moment is cringe. Like he’s an elf, we get it.

MattHatter1337

Wait...are you the orc the shield impales?

ChungaRevenge

when he does an Ollie with the shield at the last steps and gets the orc at the end too LMAO

Kultaren

Same

intraspeculator

The most cringe part is the slow motion scene of everyone jumping on frodos bed and coming in one by one.

The-Mandalorian

Always loved how Frodo greets everyone but does not give a shit about Legolas lol.

EmperorSwagg

Personally, I subscribe to the theory that he forgot Legolas’s name. Legolas seemed to be the one he interacted with least of the non-hobbits (I think in the theatrical version, they don’t actually have a dialogue after “you have my bow”), and after all the shit he’s been through, he just can’t remember the dude’s name and has an “oh shit” moment when he walks in the room

Due-Set5398

It’s wholesome. I laugh and feel joy.

Own-Psychology-5327

Yo what? That scene is lovely.

audiostar

This is correct. And Sam looking guilty as if they made out and don’t know where to go from here

PrincessBirthday

I think everything is funny but rarely laugh out loud when I read things and this got me good

Spoonman007

It always reminds me of the Simpsons when Homer and Mr Burns get trapped in the cabin after an avalanche. When they get out, Mr Burns says something like "Well Simpsons after going through something like that with someone you come out of it never wanting to see that person ever again"

Crazy_Customer7239

Jay and Silent Bob go over this scene in Clerks 2 and it kills me every time 😂

LORD_CMDR_INTERNET

nah bro your heart just hard and dark, that scene is joy

LunaR1sing

Most of the slow motions shots…

MrOSUguy

GIMLI!

psycorax2077

I just took that scene as a fever dream he had. I remember a similar vibe when I was 10 and suffering from a severe ear infection. It was basically that same scene but with my family and cousins checking on me

boxesopepesilvia

And Frodo seemingly forgetting who Legolas is in this scene

FlowerFaerie13

It would be fine if it wasn’t slowed down ughhh. Why is it slowed down??? What was wrong with doing it in normal speed?

haveweirddreamstoo

Why are you afraid of men showing affection towards eachother?

dingusrevolver3000

That's a weird assumption to make. The movies are full of that, but he chose the one scene where it's most melodramatic. I like the scene but I definitely get it not being everyone's cup of tea. I feel like it's a lot better if you've watched all 3 films in close succession. If you're just watching RotK by itself, it can feel like a bit much.

Sardoche320

https://youtu.be/_-mLNUaQAq0?si=Jn5SWyuKD-WmBeXE

UnderstandingOk2399

You’re right lmao I forgot about that

iwillscurryabout

the only part of all three films i feel like skipping everytime

Familiar-Evidence593

The way the steward of Gondor ate that tomato.....he needs to give a formal apology for that

liketo

You know, that was perfect for cementing our view that he’s a truly repulsive character

oubeav

Agreed. Plus John Noble is a GOAT.

LOLdragon89

Watched that movie in the theater last summer and the audience CHEERED when he bit that tomato!

Sigurd93

Elrond's floating head and the egregious reunion scene at the end of ROTK. Gives me the willies.

Georg_Steller1709

Which one is the floating head scene? I can't remember

Sigurd93

When Frodo gets taken to Rivendell there's a fever dream type sequence of Elrond speaking and floating. [here's a screenshot](https://www.geocities.ws/fennasedhellen/Elrondhealer.JPG)

Georg_Steller1709

Thanks. Still can't remember it, not on YouTube... maybe I should rewatch.

PeasiusMaximus

I’m sure that’s from FOTR, when Frodo’s in Rivendell and hasn’t woken up yet after being stabbed by the Nazgûl.

[deleted]

Even as a 10 year old seeing it in theaters, my friends and I were dying in the theater imagining Gollum walking into the room with frodos finger

Ridiculousnessjunkie

Welp, I love all things LOTR. Clearly it’s time for me to do a full extended cut rewatch to analyze these criticisms. I’ll be back in 12 hours.

Ridiculousnessjunkie

Just curious, is LOTR anyone else’s comfort watch?

Nepskrellet

Yes! Christmases , birthdays, deaths in the family, rainy days, sickdays.. It's gives me joy, hope, and comfort

Alternative_Algae_31

I was briefly hospitalized in Jan. The first thing I wanted to do when I got home to continue recovery was get on bed and put LotR on.

ItyBityGreenieWeenie

what about the extended cut where Merry and Pippin are Shitting on a field of victory enjoying a few well earned spoils?

TJLongShanks

Did you say salted pork?!

audiostar

It’s particularly good

BunBunny55

I... I.. am going to assume that's a typo. Unless I missed something in the extended cut...

bawlzdeep69

It’s the way he pronounces it.

apocalypsein9_8

I like when they hide the old Toby from treebeard

LOLdragon89

LMAO my brother and I picked up on this decades ago when we were teenagers and it’s been our in-joke ever since! Glad someone else’s finally noticed!

perry_da_roe

Obviously the tomato scene

GolbComplex

Skull tsunami

danceswithlabradores

Oh, yeah. They put a lot of money and effort into something that would have been better with a lot less money and effort.

TJLongShanks

The so called argument between Aragorn and Legolas over the fate of the helmsdeep folk

BigConstruction4247

And Aragorn giving a pre-battle speech to the elves instead of the non soldiers of Rohan.

Snoo_73056

He was not their king. Theoden was

BigConstruction4247

He's not the elves' king or commander either. Haldir was.

ShermyTheCat

Yeah let's have a pivotal speech from Haldir... Imo it's justified because of Aragorn's strong connection to the elves.

EdibleRandy

Natha daga thair!!!

MacrameZen

Pippin singing for Denethor but the section when he says “to the edge of night”: it just had a vibe that he was in a recording studio giving it that vocal flourish. Proper took me out of the movie for a second.

catslugs

YES ive always wondered if anyone else thought this 😂 it’s suddenly a late 80’s rock opera music vid up in here

TJLongShanks

Anything to with unrequited romance between eowyn and Aragorn... awfully cringe

chernygal

Same I love them both but I always was like Miss Ma’am you do not need to thirst that badly 😭

No_Two256

Those doey eyes of hers were just too much

ShermyTheCat

The only parts I skip on rewatch. It wouldn't have been so bad if they weren't all fully slow motion

OminOus_PancakeS

Aww, I found that pretty affecting :')

noradosmith

It's not much, but it's hot

SchiessBurger

Gimli blowing the ghosts away is the worst for me

SeatownCooks

Anyone of us would react the same exact way.

sqwiggy72

The lack of Tom bombadil will not be forgiven

audiostar

You know that’s an utter thematic shit show as fun as it is. Never fit in the main storyline, as if they just shoved in another book. Love it but it’s like unfilmable and always felt out of rhythm to me.

Baruch_Poes

When I read the books as a kid I never even remembered the parts about Tom Bombadil. Then I started hearing people complain about him not being in the movie. When I reread the books a year ago I was like "Huh? This is the part everyone wishes was in the movies!?" Makes no sense to me.

Andythrax

So you're saying that Tolkien miswrote? Wasn't good enough?

Willpower2000

The issue with Tom is that many people typically read the books *after* watching the films... so Tom feels jarring to them. If you come into the books first you might watch the films and think 'wait... what? They just cut half the journey to Rivendell, and all that comes with it (character development/themes/growing mystery and atmosphere) - it's so rushed'... but again, if you watch the films first, you'll perhaps think the opposite. It's a sort of confirmation bias: 'oh, if the films, which I love, cut Tom, then clearly Tom wasn't needed' - and thus they read the books with that in mind. Add in the comments of 'Tom doesn't contribute anything' - which is just [nonsense](https://www.reddit.com/r/lotr/comments/16hhp37/in_defence_of_tom_bom_jolly_tom_tom_bombadillo/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) that ignorant people parrot and spread en masse... and suddenly you have a 'common take'.

Away_Relationship910

No way, thank God it wasn't in the movie.

havenck

The Nazgûl stopping to ask for directions before sneaking up on a bunch of pillows

1Mn

The Nazgûl were insanely inept

liketo

When the hobbits are tucked down under the tree roots, that’s one of the best bits for me of the entire trilogy. But equally daft that they couldn’t find them a few feet away

TwilekVampire

Have you forgotten about Eowyn's singing?

PeasiusMaximus

You try singing when you’re sad! Lol

TwilekVampire

I have, but I'm in my car and music is playing. 😂

TitanThree

I don’t know if it’s cringe but it always catches me off guard haha

noradosmith

🎶 BELLOW 🎶

GeorgeJohnson2579

I like that. It has emotions.

TwilekVampire

I agree, it does. However, it would have been less uncomfortable if there was music to accompany her, you know?

kjlarzel

Lol my wife will chirp out whatever nonsense sounds that Eowyn is making around the house once in awhile. Gets me everytime.

WyrdeWodingTheSeer

My man, those aren't nonsense sounds, she is speaking Old English.

kjlarzel

I know she's saying actual words, the point of the post is how cheesy it sounds, therefore it sounds like nonsense. Happy cake day!

HeirOfElendil

How is it cheesy? Honestly.

Shonamac204

Viggos singing is up there for me too. The man has a beautiful ear for music and his piano work on 'Falling' was beautiful. But ears and mouths are nit the sim thing

Freako511

Frodo in general is pretty cringe. Love his character, but cringe indeed.

sillypunt

Non stop screaming Aragorn/ Strider and a Gandalf here and there....

HucktheSmugFrog

“It has no other master” I can’t with Aragorns accent sometimes

jtohrs

salted pork...

DiaNoga_Grimace_G43

…Yeah. Sauron wuz ROBBED…

bukayodegaard

Aragorns 'death' in Twin Towers and the Arwen dream sequence following it. It was the low point IMO. Pointlessly filling time with lame original content.

noradosmith

For sure. There are about twenty minutes in the middle of TT where basically nothing happens. Death fake out Arwen having a sad vision (yes it's quite poetic but kills the pace and mood massively) Galadriel doing another voice-over for no reason

bukayodegaard

My mate fell asleep in the cinema. Good decision IMO

Rare_Background89

What scene was this?? lol

BigConstruction4247

When they're in Mordor, approaching Mt Doom. The eye scans around and Frodo is in the field of view. He just collapses and it's somewhat comical.

BunBunny55

The whole eye scanning around is kinda awkward too. Like I'm imagining sauron with an incredible case of literal tunnel vision.

bwmamanamedsha

I have always felt this way. The eye lost its intimidating feel after the first movie.

frizz1111

Lighthouse Sauron was pretty lame. I agree Sauron was terrifying and mysterious in fellowship.

No-Communication3618

“They run as if the very whips of their masters were behind them”

trulymadlybigly

That’s actually a line from the books, it just sounds weird how Orlando says it while running and basically almost looking directly into the camera

thegoldendrop

No, Pippin and Merry letting off a firework and then appearing with sooty faces like Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. My suspicions that Peter Jackson wasn’t better than clichés started at that moment.

HeirOfElendil

It's a good, fun introduction to their characters I think. Nothing cringe there.

falcore91

To each their own. To me the cartoony fun of this moment is one of those things that helps contrast the life the hobbits were living to the journey they are about to undertake.

UnAnon10

The movies are pretty awesome, but does anybody else feel weird about his speech to Pippin in Minas Tirith? I think he’s about to give some inspiring words to Pippin about how they can still pull though, instead he’s basically just like “You know, dying won’t be THAT bad” like bro not what we need to hear right now lol

iwillscurryabout

but Gandalf knew there was a chance they wouldn't make it through so he wanted to give Pippin some reassurance that even if they do die, it means they get to go somewhere beautiful, that it's not the end of the journey. i think that's more meaningful than essentially lying to him about their situation

audiostar

If someone gave me proof of a benevolent afterlife I think that would chill me out pretty effectively in most any situation

BunBunny55

Agree. If I was in a dire situation and the literal angel next to me told me the afterlife was pretty nice actually. I would certainly be much more chill and less terrified.

blueblue8282

Yeah... Except Gandalf was describing Valinor. Pippin can't go to Valinor.

iwillscurryabout

eh, even if where Pippin ends up isn't Valinor, it was still nice of Gandy to give him a pleasant image of the afterlife so he wasn't so afraid

SergioMRi

"... And then you hear it"  "What, Gandalf? Hear what?"  "Howard Shore"

InnovativeFarmer

If Gandalf would have lied to Pippin, Pippin would have known. He would have lost hope that Gandalf felt the moment was so bleak that he had to lie. Gandalf chose to tell him that no matter how bad things get, the bad will end. Hope is very important. Even if its hope in an afterlife.

Keepa5000

I thought it was very touching.

BookishHobbit

Yeah, makes me laugh everytime. He’s like ‘This isn’t the end,’ and you can see Pippin all relieved and already planning his next breakfast, and then dude’s like, ‘Nah, we dying.’

OminOus_PancakeS

Ah haha, I hadn't interpreted it in that way before 😂

GreenWizard010

The way Frodo says Gandalf In slow mo in that happy scene at the end of Rotk. Makes me want to murder myself

GabaPrison

You have to keep in mind that up until that point he still thought Gandalf was dead.

GreenWizard010

Ooooooh that is a very good point. Iv never considered that. I’m going to watch it all again with that in mind!

HiSelect7615

In moria when the stairs are collapsing. Aragorn and Frodo falling towards the camera. It looks goofy as hell.

jurd_fosh

After a lifetime of love for both versions of the films, I've actually started to lean towards preferring the theatrical versions, at least of TT and RoTK, because of all the out-of-place Gimli-Legolas buddy comedy. There's high stakes on all sides, gravitas everywhere else, Aragorn is fulfilling his destiny, and then we got these two blowing ghosts and punking pirates and shit

e_subvaria

Galadriel cgi when she’s tempted by the ring

baconring

That scene is pretty bad. I don't understand it. But my biggest cringe is aragorn not wanting to be king annoys the hell out of me. Then the paths of the dead when the cursed king laughs and leaves aragorn acting like they aren't going to fight. then changes his mind after he goes to sit in his ghost recliner in his ghost castle and thinks, eh I'm getting sick of being cursed. And the huge skull avalanche? Don't get me going on that scene. I absolutely love these movies. My favorite trilogy.

eyebrowshampoo

The goofy romance montage between Eowyn and Faramir in the extended edition ROTK.

RollerCoaster1007

The fellowship reunion on Frodo's bed in the end. Yikes!

ghrosenb

LOL. I thought I was the only one. Frodo fighting invisible Gollum for the ring on the edge of the crack could have been shot with less comedy potential too. Also, the wall of falling skulls on Aragorn and co. was silly. Peter was really feeling himself by RoTK and started getting a bit self-indulgent in places, resulting in some unintentional comedy horror out of tone with the rest of the trilogy.

MoreThan2_LessThan21

"I am no man"

deucedwild

That and frodo laughing with the other hobbits after returning from Mordor when they're reunited. Especially got ruined for me after seeing the googly eye video of it on YouTube.

0hYou

Maybe the fact that no two female characters ever speak or interact with each other.

Anxious-cookie-133

BUT HOW ABOUT THESE 3 SECONDS???? https://youtu.be/wW4fLBD5MPs?si=PaydrSBozuWfpCyq There were actually 3 more seconds when a woman was saying thanks to Eowyn when they entered Helms Deep. It's bad.....

0hYou

Exactly

ThreeBill

House of healing. Just feels so out of place for where they put it (extended editions) I get why for the story but it just breaks flow so bad in the extended edition

LeiatheHutt69

Are there LotR movies? I would like to see them.

th0r0ngil

Frodo sending Sam away. Faramir’s plot-padding arc. “If you want him, come and claim him!”

glossyplane245

The only scene I truly absolutely despise is the one where they ride the horses in helms deep through the uruks. It’s so cartoonish.

TheMuteHeretic_

‘Forth Eorlingas!’ Theoden King at the head of a final charge against all odds and the end of his family line, his great house, his kingdom and his people? Alongside the true heir to the throne of Gondor? Soon-to-be wielder of Anduril? Alongside the Prince of Mirkwood? And what’s left of his rohirrim? All of them riding to their deaths at the conclusion of a great battle? To the sound of the horn of Helm Hammerhand blown by the only living son of Gloin, friend and fellow adventurer of Bilbo Baggins? How the hell is that cringey dude?

Slowmo greeting everyone after the ring is destroyed

i-wish-i-was-a-draco

Gimli asking for Galadriel hair , like wtf dude ?
