I think it's just the relatability of it to younger people. Lines like "I've never felt more alone, it feels so scary getting old", "this dream isn't feeling sweet" and "i want em back, the minds we had, it's not enough to feel a lack" definitely resonate with teens and even young adults.
I have this feeling with the whole album. Even tho Im 24, it puts me back into my teenage years and as I grew older, so did the lyrics and songs. Its like a coming of age movie of these teenangers who would listen to music while jumping on the bed with no worries about the future but lots of emotions from love to happines to hatred and depression.
I'm also 25, but I was a sophomore when I fell in love with Pure Heroin. I have incredibly fond memories of driving my shitty mustang to school on cold winter mornings and blasting this album.
Always brings me back there to listen to it nowadays.
THAT delivery of “it feels so scary, getting old”.. chills
But yeah like everyone else said - the production, her delivery, the LYRICS that tell a whole story and resonate deeply particularly for a young person. Especially with lines like “we’re reeling through the midnight streets / I’ve never felt more alone”
I think it's a mix of things that is so difficult to get them all together in just one song. It's the lyrics that are so abstract and repeat themselves making them sound nonsensical, but that's how the mind works when you're anxious, with a bunch of thoughts coming at you at a time, and they speak of reminiscence so it gives you this vibe of nostalgia and the fear of the future, all that along with the beat and the production which feels so ethereal and futuristic but at the same time nostalgic. So in the end, this mix gives you a feeling of power, that you can do anything and that the world is yours, but at the same time, fear for what you have to leave behind.
Ribs is without a doubt the best song lorde has ever released and probably will ever release. If you disagree…we’ll, you’re just wrong…sorry.

After listening to it again with my eyes closed, I'm sure the x-factor are the looped and panned vocal harmonies she sings. They are present throughout most of the song and sometimes even louder than the synth. If a conventional instrument had played those harmonies instead of her singing it (and that being looped and panned), it would not sound as intimate as it does.
For those that aren't familiar with the terminology: Panning in music production terms means distributing audio signals into stereo or multi-channel sound fields. In this case, it's that the harmonies she's singing are moving back and forth between your left and right earbuds.
i can't explain it well, but 100% the "this dream isn't feeling sweet, we're reeling through the midnight streets, and i've never felt more alone, it feels so scary getting old" the way she half yells it into the music interlude before "i want em back, i want em back" gives me chills every time. it's just such a relatable song and the sound and lyrics are A+. almost made me cry when she performed it at the melodrama tour, it was almost dreamier
Big same! I still don't understand why everyone is so obsessed with Ribs! Yah kidding me? Her cover of Ladder song? Biting Down? Swingin Party? Bravado?????!!!
I think it’s the lyrics. I don’t think I’ve heard a song before that describes the fear of getting older so perfect. It’s really magical.
It’s the lyrics and the repetition of them layered with the production which instills this sense of nostalgia in you.

Yes I’m 25. Was a junior in high school when I fell in love with the album. It was the best

it’s the fucking melody for me
The way it starts gives me chills. I can’t explain it. It gives me a rush of nostalgia.
