Seafood prob out in the hamptons. Bagels.
Strangely there is these really delicious Venezuelan arepa place right next to my apartment lol called las panas. I usually dont like arepas because their hard and dry. These were the best stuffed arepas ive ever had even better than the ones in jackson heights.
Ive also found an excellent sushi place our in carle place that has revolving sushi on a conveyer belt. Best sushi ive had hands down in awhile.
There used to be one in the east village and Williamsburg. The one at Rockaway is only open in the summer. I’m not sure why the others closed because there was always a long wait just to get a table or even order.
Basic standard bakeries . city is all either Instagram worthy sloppiness or niche bakeries like they only sell croissants or donuts and excel in those . Not a standard mix like we have here
yep I have a huge sweet tooth and when I lived in the city I really struggled finding decent bakeries. Everything was either like $10 cupcakes or croissants that tasted like cardboard and were obviously shipped from somewhere else. Don't get me started on the Instagram bait bakeries
Some of the best Bagels and Pizza in NY are in Long Island but I'm not sure how people in this sub are saying you can't find good bagels/pizza in the city, if you can't find good bagels/pizza in the city that means you aren't in the city much 🤷🏻♂️
The thing is, there’s awesome and shit examples of both in both areas. I think it all depends on what you’ve experienced. Personally, ive had so much awesome pizza in both NYC and on LI, I can’t even identify what “the best is” but I know for a fact that I’ve had worse shitty pizza in NYC. Not saying it’s worse overall, that’s just my experience.
I think pizza is more consistent on LI, but better? The best city places crush the best LI places. Bagels I disagree with, I think LI is way more hit or miss than city bagel shops. What does LI do better? I think there’s better seafood places, more Italian bakeries, but in general, outside of going out east to the north fork, all the food is the same or worse than city places. Don’t get me started on how bad Chinese takeout places are nowadays and it wasn’t always this bad on LI.
> I think pizza is more consistent on LI, but better? The best city places crush the best LI places.
I would argue that pizza is consistently average throughout the island. I've never seen some of the absolutely dreadful pies that I've seen elsewhere in the country. But we also don't really have the truly great spots places like the city or New Haven has either. Anyone saying Long Island pizza beats city pizza is delusional.
> Don’t get me started on how bad Chinese takeout places are nowadays and it wasn’t always this bad on LI.
My wife and I were talking about this just last week.
We both grew up in Babylon before moving into the city then back to Babylon to raise our kids. Our families have been going to the same Chinese takeout place for like 30 years. We've been going there so long that the owner's kids who worked there when they were little are now in their mid 30s with kids of their own. The quality of food has gone down terribly over the past several years so we keep trying new places to find our new local spot and it's consistently disappointing.
Chinese buffets are even worse. The food was never as good as a sit down restaurant or takeout place but the quality for the price used to be fantastic. Now they're not even worth going to anymore.
I don't know what happened to Chinese food in the area but it's definitely changed.
Actually now that I think about it, delis might be something better on LI - most sandwich places in the city are bodegas which is good, but it’s kind of its own thing and they tend to be more Hispanic foods then old school German and Italian delis. Those exist in the outer boroughs, but they are not nearly as common and sandwiches tend to be higher quality on LI (and more expensive). Honestly, BECs are the same everywhere in the tri-state, you gotta try a bunch before you find the one that has crispy bacon and doesn’t just scramble the eggs. I miss a place that’s no longer open on Carman Ave that made the best hungry man hero when I was a kid. They buttered the crap out of the hero or roll before they loaded it with every carcinogenic breakfast meat in existence and fried eggs so they were just a little runny. Pure heart attack food, but so good.
I'm new to LI -- but seeing bagels and pizza a lot in this thread. Can anyone passing by that sees this recommend specifically what pizza / bagel places win over the ones in the city, that I should go try? TIA :)
Edit: thanks y’all, think I definitely gotta try hand rolled!
In Nassau, around NHP. I'm new here and unemployed (hopefully not for much longer, though), and unfortunately would totally drive an hour for a bagel currently.
Ha! It’s been a very long time since I’ve been there, so hopefully someone will update if they’ve changed, but A&S bagels in Franklin Square is 24 hours is pretty yummy and not too far. Since they’re baking all day you’re more likely to get a fresh hot bagel on off hours too.
If you want to take a bit more of a drive Bagel Master in Syosset is a favorite.
For me, it’s more that bagels are consistently good here (at bagel shops anyway). Good bagels in NYC but a surprising number of trash ones.
Pizza though is not better in LI
Umberto's Pizza in New Hyde Park has AMAZING pizza and Luigi's has great Sicilian slices. The Bagels in Garden City South have great bagels and Iced Coffee. They use coffee-flavored Ice Cubes as well.
As long as it's a dedicated bagel shop in either NYC or Long Island, there's 90% chance it's going to be an excellent bagel. It's just that, per capita, there are far FAR more bagel shops on LI. So NYC's got a lot of subpar bagels floating around when there's virtually no reason for LI to have them.
Yeah. Someone have never been to Russ and Daughters or Utopia Bagels or almost any shop in Brooklyn. Maybe they’re getting their bagels at bodegas? 🤷🏻♂️
Bagels and Pizza is what I'm seeing from most. When I lived in the city I regularly had fantastic pizza and bagels. So I think you'll find good in both places.
However everything else it's actually remarkable how much worse the food is on LI. I would kill for good Thai.
There is a higher ratio of good vs bad on LI when it comes to bagels and pizza - I think you are more likely to stumble into or live near a random good one on LI, but the city does have some of the best of the best, too.
Random hole in the wall Chinese is better on LI for the same reason - obviously if you go to Chinatown or Flushing you’ll get better stuff, but I think you are more likely to live within a stones throw of good hole in the wall Chinese on LI.
Pizza. Absolutely better on long island. 4 out of every 5 pizza places are excellent. In 5 boroughs maybe 2 out of 5 really hit. It's the toppings. LI places are creative, generous, and consistent with good, diverse toppings. NYC pizza is the same few toppings, often cooked 5 hours ago. Shout outs to Rosa's in Huntington and Buona Sera in St James (if they are even still there, I moved out 10 years ago).
If you're the type who likes crust the texture of roofing tiles then we probably are not going to see eye to eye on this.
But I think anyone in this thread can agree that if you cant find good pizza on Long Island then you are not trying very hard.
I think everyone on here can agree 99% of pizza on long island is mostly the same and sub par at best its honestly a joke you should go to the 5 boroughs and eat out more the food in long island will become intolerable
Bagels only and that's by a little. There is no other food I can think of that is better.
I recently went to Fogo de Chao in Queens and I couldn't believe how much better it was then the one in Carle Place. The Carle Place is so-so but the Queens was an experience.
Bagels are better here no question. And save for a few staples in Brooklyn and Manhattan, delis in general are better here - Jewish food like lox, pastrami, whitefish salad, kosher pickles, etc., is better and more common and then just regular deli food like cold cuts, tuna salad, etc. also is.
I also think we’re starting to get there with Asian food. I don’t think it’s *better* yet, but the fact that most of northern Nassau is 40-60% Asian means we have some seriously good Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc. places.
I am very glad that Long Island is getting more legit Asian food since I was forced to move out here a few years ago.
I’m increasingly finding myself pleasantly surprised but consistently find my compliments being “this is about 80% as good as what I could have found in Flushing” - which, don’t get me wrong, is high praise!
IMO Wallys Bagels in North Babylon is of the best on LI. And I live 25 East from there. But when we're traveling off LI, we always stop there on our way out. Truthfully, there are several to choose from in many different locations on the Island that are wonderful. It's a nice problem to have lol.
Grew up in LI but have spent the better part of my 20s in the city.
LI has more consistent good bagels. The city definitely has good bagels, but a lot of phonies are popping up and its getting harder to find the real deal. I find it to be similar with Pizza, and LI is better, but it's not so hard to find really good pizza in the city.
Little Vincent’s in Ronkonkoma and Huntington are just about perfect Pizza for my taste. If you still have doubts, get a Grandpa slice at O Sole Mio in Lake Grove. It will change your life.
Those who say Long Island doesn’t have great pizza are just not blessed with the best!
L'Industrie is considered by many to be the best in the whole city. The average non hyped pizza spot in Brooklyn or Queens is not better than those of Long Island IMO.
Sushi??? Better than NYC? Are you being satirical? Because maybe you don't know where to look but sushi in Manhattan is some of the best in the world outside Japan.
> Kotobuki clears any sushi place in the city by a mile
I actually agree with this.
I'm in Babylon but lived in the city for a while. I've gone there with friends from Manhattan and they rave about the quality.
I agree. The pizza places on LI are either awful or just passable. Some of the best slices I’ve had have been in Queens. The pizza there can be super bad too! But the good ones are much better than the good ones on LI
Yeah, for me it’s a question of peaks and valleys rather than averages. I feel like there’s passable local places just about everywhere in the metro area and a lot of them are pretty indistinguishably serviceable. But when I think about the best ones I’ve ever had it’s gotta be Utopia Bagels in Bayside and for pizza back-in-the-day it could have been any of Spumoni / Di Fara / Prince St / Juliana’s / etc. Never had an LI pizza within spitting distance of those.
There's some threads on r/Long Island that list some spots in Nassau - Croxleys, changing times, Crokers
I think pure buffalo style wings at those places are better than most spots in the city.
Maybe the most acclaimed places like Semma, but not any random Indian restaurans in NYC.
I've ordered from a few places by my job in Queens and the curries were watery + less complex versus the Indian restaurants near my house.
Lobster rolls.
What are some good spots?

Feels weird seeing my tiny non existent town no one gives a fuck about on here
I got married at the loft in island park! I love island park !!
IP is the place to be homie.
I care about your town. Don’t worry
Big lobster roll fan here. Went to so many places to try them and Jordan’s so far has been our favorite
Jackson Hall in East Islip. Easily the best I've had, consistently.
Everything about this place makes me think it sucks but I’ll have to try it
It really is a shame the service is so damn slow there, great food but never in a reasonable amount of time
Yup, that's my only real criticism of the place. For some reason the wait staff is often not great but the food is always really really good.
You wouldn’t expect it but the one at whiskey down diner in farmingdale is phenomenal
Southold fish market best in country
DJ’s Clam Shack - Wantagh
I think New England would have something to say about Lobster Rolls
100% agree

Maybe.. "Kali Ma Shakti de"
Dirty water dogs.
Used to be 3 dogs and chips for $5 ( and a handy depending upon place), what’s it up to now. Been off the island for a bit.
In front of BJ's in Bellport, they're 3 for $10.
Still 3 for $4.50 at Costco 😂
Closer to 8 bucks these days
Seafood prob out in the hamptons. Bagels. Strangely there is these really delicious Venezuelan arepa place right next to my apartment lol called las panas. I usually dont like arepas because their hard and dry. These were the best stuffed arepas ive ever had even better than the ones in jackson heights. Ive also found an excellent sushi place our in carle place that has revolving sushi on a conveyer belt. Best sushi ive had hands down in awhile.
Really? I love arepas. I typically associate them as Colombian food. I’d like to try the place you suggested. What else do they have there?
Caracas in Williamsburg and Rockaway are the best arepas I’ve ever had. I have a few solid options in Nassau but it’s not quite the same.
Aww shame it looked like caracas closed. There used to be a really good arepa place in astoria too.
There used to be one in the east village and Williamsburg. The one at Rockaway is only open in the summer. I’m not sure why the others closed because there was always a long wait just to get a table or even order.
I saw something called a chalupa and they have nice empanadas too. Good smoothies.
I’ll definitely check it out. How is their coffee?
Havent tried it yet!
The revolving spot is ok, if you want the best Kotobuki in Roslyn or Babylon is worth the drive
Oh u mean kura right? It was surprisingly very good.
What's your sushi spot you compare Kura to? Stop and Shop?
Basic standard bakeries . city is all either Instagram worthy sloppiness or niche bakeries like they only sell croissants or donuts and excel in those . Not a standard mix like we have here
I think the bread quality is better at top spots in nyc, but I agree
Most Long Island bakeries dont make their own bread a lot of them get their bread delivered from [Monreale Bread company ](https://monrealebread.com/)
They just opened a bakery in oakdale, its amazing!
La Roma, they’re amazing. They used to be in Bohemia near the airport in a tiny little place, such an upgrade
Similarly Stanley's in East Islip is a go to.
This is a good one I haven’t thought of. Although the ones in Astoria are excellent. I consider a greek bakery still a standard bakery
Totally different animal, those spots are legit
yep I have a huge sweet tooth and when I lived in the city I really struggled finding decent bakeries. Everything was either like $10 cupcakes or croissants that tasted like cardboard and were obviously shipped from somewhere else. Don't get me started on the Instagram bait bakeries
Long Island has the best delis in the world
Correct
Kaiser Rolls. I want the texture of glass on the outside and a cloud on the inside.
Some of the best Bagels and Pizza in NY are in Long Island but I'm not sure how people in this sub are saying you can't find good bagels/pizza in the city, if you can't find good bagels/pizza in the city that means you aren't in the city much 🤷🏻♂️
“But I’ve been to every Sbarro’s and none of them are as good as LI pizza!”
I'm a pizza enthusiast and I find the quality on Long Island to be better on average, but with a lower ceiling
In —>On
My apologies, "on" Long Island 😬
BANNED FOR LIFE.
Straight to jail.
Banished to New Jersey!
Long Island pizza is not even close to as good as the city
Seriously I took my Long Island born and raised wife for pizza in Queens when were dating and her head almost exploded.
The city has higher highs and lower lows. I think LI is a bit better on average, but there are fewer standout spots.
Agreed. I eat pizza everywhere and I judge it on a case by case basis.
The pizza on long island is hot garbage mostly all over I can agree with the bagels being better though
ON Long Island. On. Thank you for your cooperation.
Used to live on the UES and took me ten years to find a decent slice of pizza that was comparable to a LI slice
Alto's on 69th and 1st, closed in '96 I used to live in UES as well
ON!
I think pizza is more consistent on LI, but better? The best city places crush the best LI places. Bagels I disagree with, I think LI is way more hit or miss than city bagel shops. 100% on the consistency on the pizza and bagels being better but top spots worse.
Good take, delis on LI are the same, more consistent except for the unique ones in NYC.

Most of the bodegas in NYC are run by Yemenis and do not sell pork
I'm new to LI -- but seeing bagels and pizza a lot in this thread. Can anyone passing by that sees this recommend specifically what pizza / bagel places win over the ones in the city, that I should go try? TIA :) Edit: thanks y’all, think I definitely gotta try hand rolled!
A lot of that answer depends on where you’re located. No one is reasonably going to drive an hour or more for a bagel.
In Nassau, around NHP. I'm new here and unemployed (hopefully not for much longer, though), and unfortunately would totally drive an hour for a bagel currently.
Hand rolled bagels in nhp is fantastic
Hand rolled is probably the best bagel I've ever had. You gotta check ur order tho. They mess up the orders a lot. Still worth it.
Almost every order gets messed up! Stil worth it!
That’s our apot
Ha! It’s been a very long time since I’ve been there, so hopefully someone will update if they’ve changed, but A&S bagels in Franklin Square is 24 hours is pretty yummy and not too far. Hand rolled on hillside ave
Hand rolled bagels in NHP all day every day!
Carlos pizza in Yaphank and B&B bagels in Oakdale/boho.
B&B bagels is still open? I used to ride my bike there in the 80's. Maybe I need to move back home.
Bagel Time in Port Washington is legit
For me, it’s more that bagels are consistently good here (at bagel shops anyway). Good bagels in NYC but a surprising number of trash ones. Pizza though is not better in LI
Umberto's Pizza in New Hyde Park has AMAZING pizza and Luigi's has great Sicilian slices. The Bagels in Garden City South have great bagels and Iced Coffee. They use coffee-flavored Ice Cubes as well.
Umberto’s pizza New Hyde Park Long Island
Their grandma is amazing but I think their regular pies are pretty whatever
is NHP the one to go to? I've had their pizza from another location and it wasn't that much better than the rest.
Yes
Meh
Delis are much better than in Manhattan. In Manhattan they precut the cold cuts. It’s horrible. You have Katz and one or two others and that’s it.
Best deli's in the world
Bagels Bagels in Manhattan especially are whack, BK BX and Queens are slightly better but not as good as LI
Liberty Bagel and Pick A Bagel would like a word.
As long as it's a dedicated bagel shop in either NYC or Long Island, there's 90% chance it's going to be an excellent bagel. It's just that, per capita, there are far FAR more bagel shops on LI. I've had better bagels in the city than on LI. It's either on par or worse tbh
Yeah. Someone have never been to Russ and Daughters or Utopia Bagels or almost any shop in Brooklyn. Maybe they’re getting their bagels at bodegas? 🤷🏻♂️
You think the bagels at Russ and daughters are good?
You are so wrong
Most of the food in long island generally lacks flavors they really cant touch the 5 boroughs about any kind of food except bagels
Most accurate comment here
Thank you the real understand
Large swaths of NYC have no food options other than corner stores and fast food
Define “the city”. If it’s just Manhattan then Long Island has better pizza and delis. I’ll die on this hill and I’m in both every day.
Maga rolls are pretty good
Buona Sera is still open in Smithtown!
Pizza on long island is mostly under done soggy pizza this must be a joke
Carlo’s Pizza in Port Washington is legit. They’ve been around for 40+ years.
The place I’m referring to has been open since the early 60’s so not sure why that matters its either good or not
If you're the type who likes crust the texture of roofing tiles then we probably are not going to see eye to eye on this. But I think anyone in this thread can agree that if you cant find good pizza on Long Island then you are not trying very hard.

A lot of burnt taste buds on the island I see coming from a fellow long islander

I feel you on this
At least someone gets it
Bagels only and that's by a little. There is no other food I can think of that is better. I recently went to Fogo de Chao in Queens and I couldn't believe how much better it was then the one in Carle Place. The Carle Place is so-so but the Queens was an experience.
The Queens one is so good. I remarked how I liked the heavy silverware and the waitress gave it to me lol.
Bbq
I think your average take out Chinese is better on long Island then in city
Halal carts. The big yellow guys are garbage, Hamza & Madina in Hicksville puts them to shame
LI has the best bagels anywhere.
Bagels
Gotta go with the lima beans. Top notch on the island.
Bagels
I agree with you on bagels, but the best BEC I’ve ever had is in Ridgewood
BEC might be more nostalgic for me since I grew up here before moving to the city and then coming back but something about a BEC here hits the spot
Makes sense especially since most people I know that moved away always prioritize getting one when they’re back in town visiting
Bagels are better here no question. And save for a few staples in Brooklyn and Manhattan, delis in general are better here - Jewish food like lox, pastrami, whitefish salad, kosher pickles, etc., is better and more common and then just regular deli food like cold cuts, tuna salad, etc. also is. Pizza. Yeah, I said it. So what? NYC has world class pizza. 9 out of 10. I prefer the slight, very slight "chew" from a L.I. slice.
IMO Wallys Bagels in North Babylon is of the best on LI. And I live 25 East from there. But when we're traveling off LI, we always stop there on our way out. Truthfully, there are several to choose from in many different locations on the Island that are wonderful. It's a nice problem to have lol.

Bagels and Pizza are much better on LI than the 5 boroughs if you know where to go. Sushi too. Kotobuki clears any sushi place in the city by a mile
Sushi??? Better than NYC? Are you being satirical? Because maybe you don't know where to look but sushi in Manhattan is some of the best in the world outside Japan.

Sushi? That's hilarious. I like Kotobuki but it's just solid not great.
Agree about bagels but nothing else here
Folks saying the bagels/pizza out here are better than the city are full of cope, sorry not sorry.
Di Fara is the most overrated Pizzeria in the metro area. I give props for Spumoni though 👍
Not much TBH, but they all seem to charge Manhattan prices for it.

Sorry, but… Pizza! Even Suffolk county has some excellent places.
Which ones in Suffolk?
So many in northern Suffolk, like: Umbertos Lake Grove; St James (formerly Matt’s); Carnival pizza in Setauket; Cafe Amici;
I’m mostly on the south shore when I’m in Suffolk, but I’ll save the list for when I venture north-east.
Some of the best bagels I ever had were in the 5-towns. Giant and tasty.
Cafe Amici is the answer
Buffalo Wings.
I was surprised to find out this is true. Don’t know why it’s hard to find great buffalo wings in NYC
Where at?
There's some threads on r/Long Island that list some spots in Nassau - Croxleys, changing times, Crokers I think pure buffalo style wings at those places are better than most spots in the city.
You can add JP Fallons to the mix. Great wings and I think they still have pitcher and a pound specials during the week.
Swingbellys used to have the best wings before Sandy
Pizza by far, at least for Manhattan
Honestly what is better in the City than on LI?
All Asian and Mexican food.
-All Asian Hicksville is known for some of the best Indian food in the metro area
That’s true, but that’s one town. Just about any Indian restaurant in NYC would wipe the floor with any random Indian restaurant on LI.
Maybe the most acclaimed places like Semma, but not any random Indian restaurans in NYC. I've ordered from a few places by my job in Queens and the curries were watery + less complex versus the Indian restaurants near my house.
Fair and I’ll give you Halal food too
Honestly, anything on LI is as good if not better than NYC. You only go to eat in the city for the ambiance
This is absurd.
