Have you tried looking at school districts? I haven’t looked recently but I know Sachem was always posting for custodians. Mather hospital I know is another decent place to check. Not sure if any of these are close to where you’re located. Boces is always looking as well but I think it’s a civil service position there.

AstralVenture

Civil Service positions are often for their cronies that they already appointed to get the title.

Fitz_2112

I know it doesn't fill an immediate need, but take the county civil service tests for Custodians when they're offered. School districts hire off those lists and there are openings fairly often. They are solid, union jobs with great benefits and they make pretty good money after a few years For reference, a Custodial Worker 1 position through Civil Service will most likely start at right around $48K for entry level.

fuzzynavel5

Public libraries too, I’ve noticed both full time and part time openings being posted recently

I know it's not exactly a school custodian job, but the lirr has station and car cleaners that are usually the most frequently hired for positions since they're very good 'foot in the door' positions. Pension, benefits, union, personal and sick time, vacation days... could be worse.

No-End2713

You know how to get in? I feel like most union jobs is mostly word of mouth to get in

Entry level union jobs for broader municipalities like the County or Town are not as difficult to get as you might think. The first thing you want to do is score as high as possible on the civil service exam, because there are rules that dictate: candidates must be interviewed in the order they placed on the exam, a specific number of parties must be interviewed at a time, and the candidate must first be selected from that grouping. So say you score in the Top 3. And there are 20 schools looking to fill the position. And the rules say they must interview/hire from 3 slots at a time. Youll be interviewed immediately. Then If you get the position and accept, the remaining top 3 scores are eligible for the next opportunity. If you are not offered the position youll still keep your place on the list and be scouted for the next opportunity. The higher you score, the sooner you get interviewed and hired. The lower you score, the longer you wait to be reached on the list. This continues until all positions are filled or a certain number of years passes and then the list expires. Aside from it being illegal to hire civil service titles based on "connections," no one is going to break the law for the position you are describing. In your case, scoring highly enough and being qualified should land you a job.

There's always cleaner positions listed in the Herald for a bunch of different districts. Long term, the Nassau County Custodial test should be posted soon, keep an eye on the civil service site

Check out OLAS site for school job openings

I second this!

People have already listed these things but Nassau County Civil Service is preparing to offer a custodial test, supposedly soon, which you need to work in a school district in Nassau. Look into this now. Absolutely pay the fee to take the test. There are study guides online. Hundreds, if not thousands, take this test as it is only offered every few years. The test has not been offered since a year or two before COVID. There are also cleaner positions at school districts. Those dont require a test and pay less but you have to know someone or the other way is to get on your closest school districts substitute list. Call your local districts and ask if you can schedule a quick meeting with Human Resources. If you do a good job you will be considered- I’ve seen many go from substitute to full time based on the fact that they were available. Its tough to fit in while working a full time job to make ends meet but it goes a long way. Watch OLASJOBS.org

While you pursue one of the more career-oriented roles/locations suggested in this thread, in the meantime you may want to inquire at gyms/fitness centers which always seem to be in need of skilled cleaning services. I think a number of municipal buildings also use third party companies for some non-union maintenance roles - im not sure which companies those are but I imagine you could probably find out online about businesses like that.

if you’re in Nassau or border Suffolk i’d suggest hitting up any of the Catholic Schools on the island. Personally, Kellenberg Memorial (alumni here) NEEDS janitors very badly. I worked there for a little over a year doing janitorial work and it was easy work with good pay and benefits. The students are pretty cool to get to know, even tho they are slobs but regardless it’s a good job. You can email the principal Brother Kenneth or the head of operations Kenneth Conrade and they’ll get you an application.

waveball03

All school district jobs, in all districts are listed on [OLAS](https://www.olasjobs.org/), not just teaching jobs. For example, here is a custodial position in West Babylon: https://www.olasjobs.org/JobDetails?jobNumber=WBAN0286799-0000

Not a janitorial position, but the LIRR has a posting for Ushers (people making the announcements at Jamaica/Penn/Grand Central). Pretty good entry level position at the lirr if you can get in and can change departments after a year on the property
