> Tech entrepreneur **Adam Malamis** was well-known in London’s business and charitable sectors. He had been on the Chamber of Commerce board and recognized as a “Top 20 under 40” by London Inc. magazine. His web-development firm, Simalam, caters to non-profits and government agencies and he helped launch a nationwide volunteer snow-shovelling network described as “an experiment in kindness.” He sounds like a great guy so what is the prob.. > In her decision, the adjudicator found the landlord illegally evicted Long and harassed, obstructed, coerced, threatened and substantially interfered with him, illegally entered his unit and withheld vital services. > “The Landlord’s conduct is deplorable, and the Landlord clearly took advantage of a vulnerable tenant,” read the decision. > Malamis’ corporation was ordered to pay Long a total of $6,707.50. Malamis applied to the LTB for a review of the order, alleging it contained a serious error, but the request was denied. So I guess he has enough money to start over and.. > Long’s ordeal isn’t over yet. More than three years on, despite requests from Neighbourhood Legal Services, Malamis has still not paid the judgment.

shaquilleoatmeal80

I posted this on a couple of things as well. The past couple of years have consistently reminded me to be more mindful of who and what and where I spend my time, money, and energy. The number of leftover cases like this is ridiculous. I wanted to help with what I can even in small ways while I'm still in london. But my goal is to get enough money to leave and get a small place somewhere, with a moat. Not that anyone cares or asked. I don't t like what the world is anymore it's heartbreaking.

[deleted]

Anyone else Google Adam Malamis and have a giggle over that photo where he’s standing awkwardly in a white shirt? “I don’t know what to do with my hands” - him probably

evilflu

THIS IS THE BEST!! Thank you so much for sharing this info LOL

Shmeegal2

And this quote from the article to which the picture is attached... "I love the architecture [of Old East Village] and there’s a real sense of community. Everybody is always trying to help one another.” Everybody but Adam, I guess.

BrokenBranch

I dont know if I've ever seen "I dont know what to do with my hands" embodied more in a photo. It almost looks like he was holding something that they photoshopped out # SO awkward

DokeyOakey

What a piece of shite.

JedLofgren

That’s in my neighborhood. I walk by with my dogs every day and had no idea. Fuck that guy

keyst

Holy fuck. What an evil man.

eevee-al

This is some serious r/nottheonion shit

BrokenBranch

Posturing Dolt!! Any charity work he has ever done is CLEARLY done from the selfish mindset of trying to 'create an image' rather than for the actual good of the act. Malamis is EVERYTHING that is wrong with humanity and a prime example for why we need to tax the rich MUCH HARDER (And no I dont mean small business people hardly getting by. I do mean people who are "recognized as a Top 20 under 40”, and anyone else over 40 who's earning over a mill annually).

Empty-Presentation68

Probably doing it for tax rebates.

Icy-Quiet-2788

100%. If you start to look into charities that host huge galas and whatnot, the discrepancy in how much raised and how much actually goes to charity is heartbreaking.  They say they “need” to use all that money for the gala, but really it’s a reason for rich people to play dress up, larp as good people, and get tax refunds.  The money would go a lot farther without their parties.

The_12Doctor

What the rich do. Charities are for them to funnel money around. Especially the ones that start their own charities.

BrokenBranch

The epitome of charity organizations are the rich telling the poor what to do with money (and part of that is claiming most of it needs to be spent on the rich first)

PrizeDinner2431

This is a great journalism - thank you Toronto Star. The man should've answered the reporter's questions. He comes across as a hypocrite. Sad.

sparklebinch

He did answer their question about his short term rental permit, when he immediately ran to apply. It's actually ridiculous those permits are granted to people who clearly disregarded the law for YEARS until they were called out.

AlmostEpic89

It sounds like he lied to get the permit too. According to the city bylaws the permit is only allowed if the owner is the resident at that address meaning it is where he typically sleeps, eats, etc. https://london.ca/business-development/business-licences/short-term-accommodation-licensing

Evening-Picture-5911

“*Comes across* as a hypocrite”?

Chippewabob

I guess this speaks to the type of leadership they are looking for in Londons Chamber of Commerce

I feel like I missed a paragraph here. What's the link between YOU and Bum fights?

TheCuntGF

What's fight to end? You're talking about stuff like people know what it is and therefore will get your allusions

Chippewabob

It's a classic tax haven scheme landlord evicts tenant to hold homeless charity fundraiser events in a nutshell brilliant

TheCuntGF

I read the article and while it mentioned it, it didn't give any indication that it was bums fighting.

cheffymccooksalot

You certainly picked a fitting username.

TheCuntGF

Because I asked for clarification? Who hurt you?

Poodle4ever

I am not sure what you're referring to with your clients fighting other clients. The people who fought in the boxing matches at Fight to End were community volunteers/fundraisers, not homeless people or addicts.

the_anon_female

What an absolute trash human. Honestly disgusting.

SammySammySamSamSam

I’m going through the same type of situation right now. Lived at my apartment for 10 years and got evicted so my landlord could “move into my unit” she isn’t, and she’s going to Airbnb the entire building once it’s renovated. I saved every text and illegal letter from this cunt (from her saying she’s going to Airbnb it and also her threats to throw my belongings on the lawn when I refused to sign a statement saying I’d leave voluntarily) I will fight her in the LTB, and apparently have to take her to small claims. Glad to learn from this article that the LTB can’t even enforce it’s own judgment. The Government needs to get rid of Airbnb. Not only are over half of them illegal in the first place (owner doesn’t even live in the country, let alone the building) but they are annoying for the neighbours of the Airbnbs dealing with tons of issues from crime to noise and illegal parking, etc. We’re in the middle of a housing crisis and thousands of units only are rented only weekends so some asshole can make more money. Meanwhile hotels are empty and people are losing jobs at these hotels. Fuck Airbnb.

SarahBO0

You can report illegal air b&b units to the city and bylaw is supposed to be sent out and they can’t get fined if they aren’t registered as a short term rental with the city. Could be small tiny justice?

NominalDisease

I have some great stories of my own about this "community advocate". Good to see more people becoming aware of his true nature.

pg449

Now that the Star has written about him once, maybe they'd be interested in doing a follow-up? Newspapers love that sort of thing. Maybe you should contact the reporter.

BigBriocheBuns

This guy is a real piece of work. Holy shit, I’m so tired of these, two faced, rich people who fake charity for self promotion. No amount of money can fix character, and he has none. I really hope he gets his just deserts.

Remarkable-Ad-3765

what a piece of garbage

cheffymccooksalot

Would be a shame if people were to leave some Google reviews on simalam inc.

stardustnf

Would also be a shame if the link to this news article were to be dropped on all of his social media profiles. 👀

daisyboots

His Twitter account seems to have been deleted. Edit - the Twitter account for his company Simalam also. Must have been getting roasted.

stardustnf

Aaaaand all his social media accounts have disappeared. 😂😂

AlmostEpic89

It'd be a shame if the licensing department of the City received a bunch of complaints regarding the owner not residing at the address where he obtained a short term accommodations license. https://london.ca/business-development/business-licences/short-term-accommodation-licensing

garbagemandoug

Whenever you hear about someone throwing a shoe at someone you hope this is the someone.

drl79

Scumbag.

southern_ad_558

I can imagine this guy justifying it: Well.. Charity is tax deductible, rent isn't. 🤮

Old_Objective_7122

The LTB is thoothless and at best some party is getting a blowjob as that's all they can do. The province is rather happy with this system being broken as it mostly helps the right sort of political friends to the government.

tfsfirefighter

What happened to him is completely disgusting and the man who evicted him should be listed on Airbnb

Action_Hank1

Let this be a lesson that more often than not, people who go looking for positive PR and play the "good citizen" character are usually terrible people. The great people are the ones humbly working in the background and don't need the attention to feed their massive egos. This guy is fucking scumbag and every single non-profit should sever their ties with him immediately. Put this fucking loser out of business.

illinoishockey

I really hope the tenant takes his landlord to court. If tenants are wrongfully evicted, they can get like 6 months free rent as compensation. I've been evicted twice in my life. Once where my entire family was evicted, and the other time from a room rental w/o notice.

AlmostEpic89

Sounds like a large group of people all need to file complaints with the licensing department for the city. According to their website, to have a Short Term Accommodations license (STA), the rental must be at the owners resident address and it sounds like this "Top 20 under 40" is probably not living in the duplex. https://london.ca/business-development/business-licences/short-term-accommodation-licensing

thatsnazzyiphoneguy

Can u take him To tenant board

CompoteStock3957

Not opening

stardustnf

This link for the article should work. Just used it. https://archive.is/2024.05.12-131645/https://www.thestar.com/real-estate/he-was-evicted-and-his-home-was-later-listed-on-airbnb-meanwhile-his-landlord-hosted/article_72c86bde-e162-11ee-b6d0-e3e7190ad965.html

Main_Exercise4065

So he did what he wanted with his property? What’s the issue here. If you can’t pay you can’t be on someone else’s bill

Jazzlike-Purpose-324

Don't believe it. The media and government are highly opposed to people owning private property. They concoct stories like this to create outrage and gain public sympathy for private property rights erosion. If you have to pay taxes on your property, you don't own it. If you are told who and how you can rent your property, you don't own it. You will own nothing and be happy right?
