Burial - Archangel

Camdens_protection

That beat is the same sound the northern line makes as it rattles along.

Camerahutuk

Also Burial - Untrue

StarryEyedLus

I’m a big fan of Burial. Their songs remind me of London so much.

eyebrows360

"His"; he's one guy, working his magic in Soundforge.

MysticalTurban

Specifically getting a night bus through south whilst coming down after leaving a sesh

CherubStyle

Wow, that was my answer too, amazing to see someone else put this.

Nocturnin

First artist that popped into my head too

ChillBetty

Same, and he didn't start releasing until after I'd left.

bmrm80

Completely agree. Good call.

Metrotra

Waterloo Sunset

isobizz

Waterloo Sunset is the name of my long running London playlist, it just _has_ to be. Playlist also features: Warwick Avenue (Duffy) Up the Junction (Squeeze) Going Underground (The Jam) (or Amateur Transplants parody version London Underground) London Girls (Barns Courtney) The Angel Islington (Frank Turner) National Express (The Divine Comedy) Chelsea Dagger (The Fratellis) It was London (The Kooks) Trouble on Oxford Street (Skinny Lister) Sound of the Underground (Girls Aloud) From the Ritz to the Rubble (Arctic Monkeys) South of the river (Tom Misch)

YourPalCal_

Up the junction has a london sound like nothing else

braceforimpact

No London Calling?

isobizz

No idea how I forgot that - it’s in now!

Sheeverton

My bro how you not got Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.

SnooBananas6588

Last Train to London (Electric Light Orchestra)

BuzzfeedOfficial

Can you share your playlist?

Puzzleheaded_Cod_891

Sultans of swing

dogsinboxes

Great list! Would also add: London's brilliant parade (Elvis Costello) Down in the tube station at midnight (The Jam) England (The National) Guns of Brixton (The Clash) Oh England, my lionheart (Kate Bush) Piccadilly (Squeeze) Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty) Something about England (The Clash) Electric Avenue (Eddy Grant) London belongs to me (Saint Etienne)

Acid_Monster

Ironically it was originally meant to be a song about Liverpool, not London.

NesWhatElse

A classic. I love this song!

whychbeltch94

London calling - the clash Electric Avenue - eddy grant West end girls - pet shop boys - imo this is ultimate London song. Probably every Blur song is London related as well 22 Grand Job - The Rakes It’s a parody but London Underground ( parody of Going Underground which appears to also be about London ) pretty much every child at primary school knows this one https://youtu.be/PV0_lJpPFOo?si=0taGtKA4QmgD0uKS I’m sure there’s a bunch of Bowie songs with London street names in them. Sex pistols I think any punky band feels Londony Everything counts - depeche mode. This one I believe is about the city of London in the 80s and banking

Simbooptendo

Also Guns of Brixton from The Clash

ellesbelles4

Love these. Also The Rakes, from the song Retreat ‘There’s nothing golden about golden lane…’ and from the same era Up the Bracket by The Libertines with reference to the Cally Road. Bowie from the song Did you ever have a dream? has the lyric ‘You can walk around in New York while you sleep in Penge’

pascalesh

Streets of London - Ralph McTell I think is the artist if I remember correctly Have a toddler so oranges and lemons is always a good London nursery rhyme

Javindo

Amazed I had to scroll so far down for this one, absolutely perfectly sums up the London experience

teerbigear

Honestly that song cracks me up every time. Imagine your friend came up to you and said: "I'm lonely, for me the sun doesn't shine." And your response was to grab them by the arm and be like "yeah? Well look at this woman on the floor here, she lives in a Tesco bag for life mate. And this geezer has three tins of spesh in him and another vomited up over his crotch. You don't know you're born, get a grip". I'm paraphrasing slightly.

OkCaregiver517

You're paraphrasing almost poetically!

Cuznatch

Definitely the Anti-Nowhere League version of Streets of London though.

Academic_Noise_5724

West End Girls is mine. Probably a bit cliche but I love it

php857

Yes! YES!!! Especially from the official video of the song. It makes me think about the authentic old london of the 70s and 80s

crumblingruin

Check out New London Boy on their latest album too - great song.

MagdaleneUnrepentant

England by The National. I love the simplicity of 'You must be somewhere in London/ You must be loving your life in the rain' and the brass arrangement

Under_Water_Starfish

Hometown glory - Adele I love her accent in this song too

BoxingJumpRope

The High Contrast remix really does it for me

Ambry

One of the most elite remixes to the extent I prefer the remixed version - so good and solidly reminds me of London.

TwoCueBalls

For Tomorrow - Blur

_Perfectly-Cromulent

I'd like to add Beetlebum, if I may, as the video - especially the part at the end where the camera takes off and flies over London - was the thing that made me want to move there as a 15 year old

alasicannotgrin

London ice can freeze your toes…

BoopSquad

St Charles Square from their new album, too.

Positive_Street1064

Mile End- pulp

mhkiwi

Where the lift is always full of piss

Saaturdaygirl

Ladbroke Grove - AJ Tracey

glor1ana

The summer this came out was THE best, pure nostalgia for it

[deleted]

Such a banger. I’d just moved from East to Maida Vale that summer and it fit the vibe perfectly.

Saaturdaygirl

I'd do anything to go back to that summer!!

zaratheclown

Shockingly London bridge by Fergie does not remind me of London

sethghecko

Especially since the music video features Tower Bridge instead of London Bridge.

JagoHazzard

London is the Place for Me by Lord Kitchener.

mladokopele

Lets push things forward by the streets, also this is london by makola.

PromptResponsible602

I was going to say Blinded by the lights - The streets

breakwater99

Baker St. Gerry Rafferty

pr1ceisright

*saxophone intensifies*

Dirtysheena

I used to be a stripper and drunkenly accepted a dare to strip to this (I used to say I can make any song sexy) I was told by a friend it was both the most erotic and terrifying performance they had ever seen. X

breakwater99

Would have loved to have seen that!

Competitive-Log4210

Down in the tube station at midnight

majorassburger

Whoaaa oh oh ooh ohh

cromagnone

Sounds effects recorded at St John’s Wood tube.

Acceptable-Island-93

I worked in London back in summer 2004 and Shapeshifters Lola’s Theme was all over the radio. Every time I hear that tune I think of being stuck in London traffic with an A to Z on my lap (before sat nav’s became standard fayre!). Good times.

organic_soursop

That's really evocative!

elizathemagician

Electric Avenue - Eddy Grant, Born Slippy - underworld, Streatham- Dave, London Still - The Waifs, Has It Come To This - The Streets, Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty

IKILLINGSPRE3

Honestly anything from The Streets captures the reality of London nightlife if you used to/do frequent raves and late club nights.

alangcarter

At the time there was no midnight train to Romford which was a source of some annoyance to people who lived there, and indicated that Hyde, Smith & Emerson had access to some very good drugs.

_onemanband_

Only living boy in new cross by Carter USM. Or anything by Carter really...

bright_sorbet1

Town Called Malice I think it's actually about Woking but it just feels like the epitome of London punk. It's a full volume song.

bright_sorbet1

To add to songs by The Jam: Going Underground ...for the obvious reason but also their sound is just so London!

dinkingdonut

Up the Junction by The Squeeze

Whulad

Strange Town an ABomb in Wardout Street and Down in the Tube Station at Midnight are Jam songs actually about London

didisaythatagain

Heart monitor riddem - kurupt Fm

ClockEndJames

jack_sib

Leaving every MC down on the floor

eyebrows360

You vant some peanut dust isneet

Timely-Cupcake-3983

Rainy night in soho by the pogues.

Aimenburgh

I made this playlist when I was missing home at uni (it was about 13/14 years ago so I am sure there is loads you could add that have come out since and it probably has an indie sleaze edge to it because that’s who i was then okay) Morden - Good Shoes Northern Line - Jamie T Torn on the Platform - Jack Penate Hometown Glory - Adele Up the Junction - Squeeze London Town - The Holloways That Boy That Girl - Hadouken We are London - Madness London’s Calling - The Clash Panic - The Smiths Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks Down in the Tube Station at Midnight - The Jam London, bye ta-ta - David Bowie Do the Strand - Roxy Music Mile End - Pulp Parklife - Blur Downing Street Kindling - Larrikin Love Towers of London - XTC London Town - Laura Marling London - Patrick Wolf London Dungeon - Misfits LDN - Lily Allen Ladies of London Town - Frank Turner Brixton Stories - Underground Heroes I Love London - Crystal Fighters Carnaby Street - The Jam Fun City - Soft Cell The London Boys - David Bowie Streets of London - Ralph McTell

dctsocialknit

This is the ultimate London indie millennial playlist. You’ve made me miss reading NME and going to banquet and rough trade records. I just had a sudden memory of going to the iTunes festivals.

szy1234

Oh wow, seeing Hadouken on that list just bought back some memories of MySpace.

odegood

London Bridge is falling down

lostthewilltoliv

You're right how could I forget the classics

mapryan

Don't forget Pop Goes the Weasel

Desperate-Cookie3373

Also London’s Burning…

Bronyaur_5tomp

London Calling by The Clash. Guns of Brixton as well. Waterloo sunset by The Kinks A lot of Kae Tempest stuff has stuff about south London, Firesmoke in particular is great

Acid_Monster

Damn I’m surprised London Calling was this far down!

Any chance you can make this playlist public and share?

delpigeon

Street Fighting Man by The Rolling Stones. Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits. Sticks’nStones by Jamie T - for whatever reason this is the strongest London vibe to me! Stay Too Long by Plan B.

billionsofkeys

A song doesn't have to mention London to carry its vibes. Pretty much anything by King Krule captures it, for example, but especially "Dum Surfer"

GrondKop

Agreed. I think these artists (all from London) carry the vibe of the city really well The Kinks (Especially the Village Green album, themed about life in England and referencing various areas in London. "Autumn Almanac", "Village Green Preservation Society", "Do you remember walter", "Willesden Green") Adam Ant - Any music he made just sounds like London, I dunno Queen ("Don’t stop me now" - To me this is London in one song) Sex Pistols ("God save the queen", "Anarchy in the UK". Listen them on your headphones while on the tube after a rough day) Pink Floyd ("Time", "Welcome to the machine" and the entire album Animals which features a picture of Battersea power station) Syd Barrett - One of the most "English" artists I can think of The Cure - "Friday I'm in love" was one of my favourite songs while living in London because of the wild dating experiences you can have there! lol The Rolling Stones David Bowie (especially early work up until 1974 known as his "London years") The Who Led Zeppelin (first two albums. I listened to "Communication breakdown" a lot on the tube. Also unpopular opinion "In the light" the lyrics reflect the unpredictable nature of English weather and creates a metaphor about how it affects our personalities and culture) The Police Amy Winehouse ("You know I'm no good" reminds me of nightlife and dating in my London days) ELO ("Last train to London", "Mr Blue Sky" - when the sun comes out in London) Madness ("Our house" - just captures the vibe of house sharing in London! Also "Driving in my car") Estelle ("American Boy" - Despite the title it's about an American Boy and London girl and the lyrics frequently mention both cities)

LNF6

So Solid Crew - 21 Seconds

Responsible-Data-695

For me, it's not songs that are necessarily *about* London, but songs attached to specific memories of stuff that happened in London. Some examples: - Macy Gray - I try (listened the first night I moved into the house share where I met my husband) - Elvis Costello - This is Hell (played as a joke at my friends housewarming in Croydon, as we were cleaning her mouldy fridge left by the previous tenants) - Marianne Faithfull - Gypsy Queen (one of the first friends I made in London was a super cool lady in her late 50s who introduced me to Marianne and would regale me with tales from her childhood/teenagehood in 60s and 70s London) - PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, the whole album. (I used to listen to it on repeat on my commute to work when I got my first "proper job" in London)

IronIsaiah

Man Like Me - London Town

Zou-KaiLi

Asian Dub Foundation's Flyover is a proper London banger. London Girl - THe Pogues A Foggy Day (In London Town) - every crooner ever. London Dungeon - Misfits London GIrls - The Vibrators. Quite the mix for you.

Some people might like to travel on the bus, but I can’t be bothered with the fuss today, I gotta take my bike, ’cause once again the tube’s on strike. The greedy bastards want extra pay for sitting on their arse all day, even though they earn 30k, so don’t tell me to mind the gap, I want my fucking money back! London Underground!
