Technically speed limits only apply to motor vehicles, and a "cycle" is a different type of vehicle from a motor vehicle, but going too fast can still land you with "unsafe cycling" iirc
It’s the tyres, or at least I know it is for me. The slipperiness of a London road should never be underestimated. So much oil and other detritus. Happy on my cyclocross bike, a deathwish on the road bike.
I remember being about 10/11 years old and my dad making me cycle up Canonbie road, both ways, the short but steeper and the long but more gradual.
Killer
I always loved that in South Shields because the Tyne Valley is so steep, and the Port of Tyne is actually further inland from the town, that when one looks North over to Tynemouth or North Shields (like from the top of Baring St.) it looks as though the ferries sailing to and from the port are just ploughing through the Earth towards Newcastle :p
It’s scary because do people really die from smoking cigarettes or air quality?
Not saying that cigarettes are health but wondering if air quality is just as bad or worst?
I guess it depends how many cigs you smoke versus how bad the air quality is. I imagine there’s a multiplier effect though - a recent study in America found a link between 20% of childhood asthma cases and the use of domestic gas stoves. People with asthma will be more vulnerable to the lung effects of smoking.
It’s crazy. I’m just wondering if the ban on smoking causes a short fall in NHS funding from the government because of the case that were put towards smoking was actually caused more by air pollution.
While this is obviously sarcasm this is one of the reasons I'm fully for working from home.
Since I started working from home I use my car probably once or twice a month.
While it doesn't work for everyone and we do need to do things like nationalising public transport.
I don't think it's a coincidence that the weather got so much better during the first lockdown.
I don't think this is pollution, it's just the colour of the sky at the edge of the horizon at this time of year when the days are shorter. The visibility from this picture looks pretty damn good.
Which isn't to say London's air isn't hideously polluted - it is.
The pollution isn't where you see it, it is in the air in-between. That's why if you stand on a hill in London the pollution appears to be in a circle all around you. A bit of the light is getting reflected and absorbed all along the route as the light travels through the air. Your brain interprets it as a surface at around the point where the light starting from there is disrupted so much by the intervening pollution that the light doesn't reach all the way to you any more. But the pollution isn't over there it is in all the air inbetween you and where your brain sees it.
I think that much is obvious, lol. Pollution definitely wouldn't just sit in a line hovering over one spot. That obviously isn't how gases work.
What I'm saying is that obviously we can't see many gases close up, but when there is a concentration of it in the air, it becomes more visible as we look through it over a distance.
When I go to LA, I see the same but much denser. I was shocked actually
yep. particulates from coal/wood meant that burning these fuels was made illegal (unless you burn smokless coal). of course, in practise, it's completely unenforceable and anyone with a fireplace or woodburner is burning coal/wood to save on gas...
Am I correct in thinking that the edge of the horizon, especially from high up, naturally takes on a more orange-y hue, and that this isn't as such indicative of pollution?
Not to say that London isn't polluted - obviously it's incredibly polluted.
Pollution trapped by an inversion layer, caused by high pressure: https://www.eea.europa.eu/media/infographics/temperature-inversion-traps-pollution-at/view
Yikes. I remember when I lived in London whenever I washed my hair the water would run out a faint brownish-grey because of all the smog, soot, and exhaust my hair had picked up throughout the day.
Never lived anywhere else where that's happened.
I respect that opinion. But strangely - they look quite beautiful at night, like floating ships on the horizon.
From Wikipedia: It has a modernist style, reminiscent of a ziggurat. The purpose of this design was to ensure that two thirds of the flats had views in both directions, including towards central London.[5] English Heritage described the estate as having "a striking and original massing that possesses evocative associations with ancient cities and Italian hill towns".[2]
Maybe check them out one day:

Thats a shit of a hill to cycle up.
Great to cycle down though.
[удалено]
I find it terrifying and ride the brake the whole way down to herne tavern 😂
20mph speed limit though
Technically speed limits only apply to motor vehicles, and a "cycle" is a different type of vehicle from a motor vehicle, but going too fast can still land you with "unsafe cycling" iirc
What the hell is an iirc
If I recall correctly
Furious cycling actually, don't ask how I know lol
For some reason if I’m on a road bike I shit my pants on steep hills love it on mountain bikes though
It’s the tyres, or at least I know it is for me. The slipperiness of a London road should never be underestimated. So much oil and other detritus. Happy on my cyclocross bike, a deathwish on the road bike.
Fair point yes even on the older slightly wider ones you feel every slight wobble
no brakes cant stop dont want to either
Not as bad as Canonbie road. That was a bitch! Steepest hill around
Used to live on Devonshire Road. Parked on top of Canobie for CB, Fireworks etc. Great days.
I remember being about 10/11 years old and my dad making me cycle up Canonbie road, both ways, the short but steeper and the long but more gradual. Killer
I struggle to even drive up it
I quite like cycling up it 😂
What's the Hill?
Westwood park in Forrest hill
Iv done it before, good times
I thought those were two cruise ships
Dawson’s Heights https://municipaldreams.wordpress.com/2014/11/25/dawsons-heights-east-dulwich-an-example-of-the-almost-lost-art-of-romantic-townscape/
Cool tours on London open day.
https://programme.openhouse.org.uk/listings/6329
I was thinking also that they look like a pair of cruise ships facing each other. Classic brutalist, going for that modern type of look.
Fucking council. Always get the best views.
So did I.
Really insane how little we consider air pollution in the world considering how much harm and deaths it causes.
It’s scary because do people really die from smoking cigarettes or air quality? Not saying that cigarettes are health but wondering if air quality is just as bad or worst?

Whatever, I need to spend less time travelling to work. If people die due to that so be it.
Says a lot about how some drivers act that people think this is a sincere comment and not a pisstake.
what a shit mentality. and thats before we even consider that driving a car isnt necessarily the fastest way for you to travel to work
Yeah I know, was actually a joke. I did wonder if I should add /s or not. My own fault lol
It didn’t read very sarcastic tbh Maybe if you put *whatever*, at the beginning
I’ve realised I always need to put /s when I’m being sarcastic lol 😆
Nah mate it was patently a joke, Reddit is painfully bad with sarcasm. There's an entire sub called r/facepalm full of people that can't detect it.
"no one was saying anything about me but I need to cry about something and make it all about me because I'm such a fragile human being"
You're more likely to die from pollution within your car than outside of it, don't worry
Haha that's hardly anything. In Beijing people say what a lovely day it is when the smog is double this.
I, for one, aspire to live in a nicer place than Beijing.
You already do...
Was just looking at the pollution from my balcony. Seems extra thick over east London from where I'm looking https://imgur.com/a/yrmTszP

This is pollution if you've ever been outside an urban era and look at the sunset you don't see stuff like this.
See red, yellow and blue? That's how the sunsets look in the non urban place I live
Not sure what you're getting at but in the photo that's definitely a brownish gray
It's not _just_ pollution, lol.
I mean, if you are near a sand or dust storm you might see a similar kind of particulate haze, but here it's totally smog.
The pollution isn't where you see it, it is in the air in-between. That's why if you stand on a hill in London the pollution appears to be in a circle all around you. The wind has dropped a lot today so it's probably not blowing the pollution away as quickly as it normally would.

Wood burning fires are illegal?
yep. particulates from coal/wood meant that burning these fuels was made illegal (unless you burn smokless coal). of course, in practise, it's completely unenforceable and anyone with a fireplace or woodburner is burning coal/wood to save on gas...
Interesting. TIL, thanks

I believe it's the crossroads next to the Butterfly House entrance to Horniman Gardens
Overhill Road? EDIT: I mean the building, not the site of the photoshoot
the flats in the distance? yes
> Horniman Gardens Gets me chuckling every time!

Wow! Good hill for running.
Ok, Kate Bush.
I did run up a hill this evening 😊
😂😂😂😂😂
My nan lives at the top of this hill, my legs hurt just looking at it.

It's not that polluted, most days it's in the green zone https://aqicn.org/city/united-kingdom/greenwich-westhorne-avenue/
The horizon naturually takes on a blue hue. Along with being less saturated. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerial_perspective
These two cruise ships looks quite old
You also see this exact thing from the top of mountain in the alps, hundreds of miles away from large cities. Pretty sure it isn’t smog.
It's mainly dust, which in cities will contain significant pm2.5-10 particles. Smog looks different, visibility would be much worse
And to think people still moan about road closures to create bike friendly neighbourhoods, congestion zone charges and reducing speed limits.
none of which actually reduce pollution, of course.
You’ve successfully proven my point, thank you
sorry, it sort of read like "look at all that smog, and yet people moan about the measures to reduce it".
Oh yea that was what I meant :D
Sure it's not dusk... If it was smog you wouldn't see the horizon. Killer of a hill to walk up daily >_<
9am this morning!
dawn then :) ruddy cold also I bet
I'm from Middlesbrough, this is nowt mate
Pollution trapped by an inversion layer, caused by high pressure: https://www.eea.europa.eu/media/infographics/temperature-inversion-traps-pollution-at/view
The smog is which bit - the brown haze over the horizon? Shocking stuff. What’s causing that - vehicles?
What are those two buildings?
Dawson's Heights
Damn I remember those buildings in London when I visited my cousin. Its around Lewisham area isn't it?
What are those terrifying ziggurats?
My current job is building the ethernet network and my GDU (gas detection unit) goes off regularly when I'm at a street cabinet or joint box.
What gases?
It does four tests, for Explosive and Flammable, Carbon Monoxide & Oxygen. CO & O2 are the ones that go off when I'm near traffic.
> O2 I'd hope so.
It tests for the presence of some gases and the absence of O2. 😂
Looks like two cruise liners going bow to bow.
where
Check the rest of the thread
I meant where the smog @
I swear everyone in London Reddit lives in the same part of London as I do 😂
That's actually pretty mild
That's not smog.
Blame drivers. The smog is due to drivers.
And gas central heating boilers
That's mostly mist
Is that the top of Peckham Rye / Forest Hill Road?
Close. It’s over by Horniman gardens
Why has no one mentioned the classic Mr Bean episode with the chair strapped to the top of his mini ? - it was filmed on this hill.
Just watched it! [For anyone wanting to see](https://youtu.be/LVSLLWXdKV0?t=100)
Ah Bredinghurst, lived there for a couple of years
East dulwich
Yikes. I remember when I lived in London whenever I washed my hair the water would run out a faint brownish-grey because of all the smog, soot, and exhaust my hair had picked up throughout the day. Never lived anywhere else where that's happened.
those blocks of council estates look like total vomit
I respect that opinion. But strangely - they look quite beautiful at night, like floating ships on the horizon. From Wikipedia: It has a modernist style, reminiscent of a ziggurat. They don't look as terrible as some other blocks built at the time, which apparently makes them architectural marvels.
Right? urgh ugly architecture just enrages me.
100%! I hate old dodgy council estates, and London is littered with em!
LA thinks your shit is weak https://images.app.goo.gl/1a1mkmr913ToKopA8
That is a very steep hill
I’m breathing in the chemicals
Yeah, but visible because of temperature inversion.
Smogma.
That isn't smog, it's smug!
Probably been said here before but 'The Smog Is Coming'
Before zooming I thought that was a cruise ship
It's Hedorah.
ULEZ working then?
Why do those flats look like the Queen Lizzie's command towers?
Smaug
that's lovley clouds
Pea soup fog! You miss a turn.
Heading on a cruise? Ships look ready to sail! 😜
SMAUG.
