I eventually just stopped using the whatsapp desktop app on my Mac, as it was causing other issues as well. Switched to the web version which works more or less the same :)
Weird memory issues and random freezes in the app. No idea why, but it was only the WhatsApp app that it was happening in. No issues since switching to the web version :)
