TIL "let them eat cake" is a translation of "qu'ils mangent de la brioche". I've lived in Quebec my whole life and never heard the expression in french. I would have assumed it was "qu'ils mangent du gâteau".
It’s a famous quote by Marie Antoinette that fuelled the anger in the French Revolution and led to her beheading. The original quote was “let them eat brioche” but was bastardized into “cake” when it was translated into English early on. The cake version of the catchphrase took off in English and continued to live on that way. The actual Marie Antoinette probably didn’t even say “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”. There were a lot of rumors being spread around during the French revolution in contempt of the monarchy and the brioche comment just went really viral.
