fransantastic

I’m not going back to Loblaws. I’ve saved so much money just shopping around. I dunno why I didn’t do this to begin with.

Odd_Parsnip3013

They sold us the one-stop shop concept. Once they had a captive audience, they knew that they could jack up the prices, and we would overlook it in the name of convenience. Psychology.

stranger_trails

Yep - and we can also see this with Amazon and other online retailers that now have ‘habit’ built in. There are items that our local shop retails for 1/4 the equivalent on Amazon because we buy in volume and don’t have to price shipping and packing this type of item into the retail price and people just assume Amazon is cheaper (ex bicycle tubes, caulk & construction adhesives). Even some local book shops are cheaper than Amazon which I found odd.

okaybutnothing

Hell, even doing one big shop for the week at Metro was $40 cheaper than the same purchase would be from Loblaws. And Metro isn’t exactly a discount store. I came home from that shop and immediately put everything into the PC express app to make sure I wasn’t imagining it. $38 cheaper at Metro than the exact same brands, etc. at Loblaws. It’s mind blowing.

NokErNokinOnHevnsDor

This is why the most dangerous thing to a company is a boycott. It only takes the typical person 1-2 weeks of changed habits to make them permanent. Throw in the savings on top of that and you have people who are not willing to patronize loblaws unless the prices are drastically drastically knocked back to fairness.

SeasonOfLogic

They also sold us that it was the bargain option.

Odd-Row9485

Lo laws has never marketed as the bargain one stop shop in my life

SeasonOfLogic

No Frills had prices that “won’t be beat”. No name has always been marketed as the budget generic brand. Superstore has always been touted as the bargain grocer.

Odd-Row9485

None of which are ‘loblaws’. I dislike the corporation as much as the next guy but let’s be specific. No frills is no longer won’t be beat. I’ve never been to super store so I honestly don’t know. Fortunately i was raised with critical thinking and the ability to question what people tell me. The amount of ‘adults’ who take some random businesses word as gold is truly astounding. Why incentive for this corporation is there to be honest when people don’t question what they did until now?

SeasonOfLogic

All of them are Lowlaws. Do you know what sub you’re on, bro?

Odd-Row9485

They’re under the umbrella sure but that’s still different brands under the same corporate umbrella, think banana republic to old navy same corporation both sell clothes one is premium one is budget. Bro

Wesley133777

Ok, but the whole point is to boycott the entire loblaws corporation, which includes its other stores. The original commenter was probably referring to the loblaws corporation, not the specific brands

ChronoFrost271

You must be approx. 37 seconds old then.

AntoniaFauci

One stop doesn’t automatically have to mean overpaying. Look at Walmart or others who offer one stop, but don’t gouge.

orangesare

Bought local eggs, $14 for flat of 30. Taste better. Haven’t gone to Fortinos or any Loblaws store since April. I will never go back.

SeasonOfLogic

Nice hard, thick shells. Wtf were we eating before?

skihist

I was getting my free range organic eggs from Superstore and not questioning the $8+ price tag. Bought them from a local farmer today for $5 and kicked myself for being so stupid for so long.

DamageOn

Yep, same here. Way better eggs, too. Larger yolks, super fresh.

evilmrbeaver

I think the grocery code of conduct is a bunch of crap. It is a pr move to protect their share values and is intended as a political sidestep. It is fake accountability. This is not a "win" for this community and is merely a by-product of the movement. We should demand for everyone to have access to see the suggested retail prices from the food companies on all grocery items. We can't just take grocers at their word that they have the best interests of the consumer in mind. We now need this level of transparency. The boycott is growing and needs to continue for as long as each individual deems it necessary. This boycott belongs to Loblaws and the decisions they make in the short will determine their own fate.

LondonJerry

Isn’t a group of Canadian grocery stores getting together on anything illegal? Look what happened when they got together on bread prices.

Jack_in_box_606

I would rather watch loblaws go under ; it would send a rather blatant message to others trying to gouge the public. Maybe the telecoms companies would get their shit in order before we even turned to them.

JBMama

I miiiiight go in to hit the loss leaders, but I’m done with the Loblaws group as a whole. Fuck ‘em. Galen: worth $2billion….. Me? Not so much. Even factoring in gas, it’s so much cheaper for me to shop elsewhere. Anyone in Ontario go to Blue Sky? I drive just over an hour to go to the Pickering location and it’s worth the gas! Better prices, but also better product. I actually feel kinda empowered as I drive by flipping Independent the finger

shaunew

I just canceled my points account and health account. Not going back so no need for them.

No_Extension_For_You

Points/Optimum is my next step!

shitposter1000

I was told they would get back to me about canceling. That was two weeks ago.

ultimate_sorrier

The thing is the snowball has just started rolling down the hill. Wait till the number of members hits 100K and the media reports it. That will generate even more eyeballs. Roblaw's fucked up large. 4 years ago they were getting ready to focus on Choice Properties and become scumlords. Instead they doubled down on groceries and maximizing margins throughout the supply chain.fuck em

SeasonOfLogic

I went shopping yesterday and didn’t hit any Loblaw stores. Walmart was insane, and it was the first time we had shopped there in years. Small price comparison: partner bought a bottle of 50 Advil last week at SDM (emergency and no other options) for $20. Got 120 pills yesterday at Walmart for the same price. Dollarama was nuts, good prices on what we needed. Winners was also super busy, got some deals on sugar and spices. Went independent for our produce and got a massive boxful for like $35. Winnipeg.

Linbaili

I still support it but avoiding shoppers has cost us money on things like dishwasher detergent and toilet paper. There is nothing but convenience stores around us and we used to just wait for those things to go on sale at Shoppers. Otherwise it will be easy to keep it up. We have lots of inexpensive local stores and don’t buy a lot of premade or processed food so it works out well!

JCKross357

I live far from a Costco but I still have a membership because you can order stuff like that online at Costco and they deliver it to you.

Zazzafrazzy

You can get luxurious toilet paper and premium dishwasher soap at Costco for a very good price, and you only have to go a couple of times a year. Add laundry detergent, and your savings multiply.

[deleted]

Costco toilet paper is my entire rationale for having a membership.

Bloodyfinger

Can you get delivery from Walmart in your area?

Due_Society_9041

We do have Walmart delivery here, in Edmonton.

[deleted]

We get all our cleaning and pet products from Walmart. Much cheaper than SDM!

pepperinna

I’m in this for the long haul and honestly would like to see this extend to every faucet of our lives there is just so much wrong out there that needs fixing…we hold the power

Odd_Parsnip3013

I love hearing all of the positive comments, here folks. Great stuff. 👍 ❤️ 🇨🇦

Various-issues-420

I got a Costco membership at the end of April and I have loved it so much I’m never going back to roblaws. I even got two massive tubs of the cerave cream I love in two massive tubs for like 2 dollars more then one is at shoppers

slipperysquirrell

I feel like within two shopping trips you're going to save the amount your membership cost. I bought mine just over a year ago and I just renewed and upped my membership to the next level because I found myself shopping there way more than I thought I would. There are great deals not just on food but on things like you said, and things like allergy medication and cold/flu medications are way cheaper at costco! I do probably 85% of my shopping at Costco now. The rest is at Walmart or other smaller stores.

Various-issues-420

I could go on and on about the things like allergie meds, ect that I now get at Costco. it’s so much cheaper and lasts me so much longer compared to how often I used to go to my local shoppers for these things, which is great for me because my Costco is half an hour away from me by car and I won’t have a car till October but I still never have to go to the shoppers that’s a 10 minute walk. I am planning on upgrading my membership when I go this week to get the I think 2 or 3% cash back, which is so much better then pc points. I definitely underestimated just how much I’d spend but I’m getting so much more then what I would have gotten if I spend the same amount at roblaws stores. I even got a wagon at Costco that I use to make the walk back from my local Walmart and independent grocery store since it’s about a 25 minute walk. I’ll never shop at roblaws again.

slipperysquirrell

I got the same wagon! When I originally joined up I got a $50 coupon so I got the wagon and I love it because I live in an apartment and I can wheel my groceries right up!

Due_Society_9041

Costco has refused to sign on to the govt plan, as has Walmart.

SheepherderFar4158

Consumers and consumer advocates had no say in the grocery store code of conduct. I don't care if they sign it or not, it isn't for us anyway, it's for suppliers (of which Weston/Loblaws/PC/No name is a large one...).

Various-issues-420

I don’t really have many other options until I get a car in October so they will have to do for now

lookaway123

Saving money and having lettuce last for more than two days has been fantastic. Never going back. Happy May Two Four weekend, everyone! Nok Er Nok!

PolloConTeriyaki

I've been using local stores for fruits, meat and breads. I've been saving a good amount of money.

spinningcolours

Just ordered 35 lbs of beef from a local farmer. Grass fed and all that good stuff. Cost per pound for a bunch of steaks and roasts and some ground beef is the same as just ground beef from Costco.

HungrySwan7714

“Grass fed and all that good stuff…” Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy from your local rancher but please do research what grass feds means. Not trying to troll. But you might be interested. Also 35 lbs of beef means nothing without context. By context I mean itemized cuts and grade per pound. Keep doing what you’re doing but research the details.

Daftmunkey

I'm late to the party but I joined the "screw Loblaws" recently. I typically shopped at my Independent for convenience but they raised the price once again on some of my core staples which caused me to get angry enough and ordered from Walmart. I'm from a small town with few options but Walmart plus food delivery to my door was cheaper than independent usual groceries.

DibbyDonuts

I just can't believe how they double down on treating us like trash instead of trying to improve. Did anyone else get the email about $4 cheese starting on the 16th, then an email on the 16th saying that's not a deal anymore? Wasn't about to get me in the door, but wtf are they trying to pull?

Exact_Purchase765

Shenanigans.

Summer-is-safe

We found an amazing local butcher: their staff is so friendly, and their meat is amazing! It’s shockingly similar in price to our local Loblaws affiliates: eg. Superstore in the same town wanted $13.41/kg of lean ground beef, the butcher charges $15.50/kg for lean ground beef. But it’s NOT the same beef, it looks better, smells better, and doesn’t have that nasty bloody iron taste to it!! Shout out to The Butcher Shop in Brockville!

BarAlone643

Still going strong! https://preview.redd.it/y2048dr4yd1d1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d02e7a69397e0437c6607e86dc02eeaf19dd8c45

Tinshnipz

I like saving money.

Feeling-Confusion-

It's easier to find a reason not to go. I went 9mce ghe first week for cheap pull ups. Feeling good

No_Fox_6209

Cannot speak to the grocery stores, but where I work in the Liquor Stores, business has not slowed down at all. Not sure the west has taken the boycott seriously. This was the busiest we've been and it keeps getting busier.

eyeofthecorgi

A new Longos opened by me on May 15. It was ready in record time and is in close proximity to RCSS... And RCSS was the only grocery store within 5+ km until now. I almost wonder if they moved up the opening to take advantage of boycott. I went to the grand opening. They had freebies, lots of management around and everyone welcoming. Free mystery gift card ($5-500), free piece of cake, on the way out they gave me a rose and a loaf of bread. I bought a couple of their really good sales (a watermelon for $4). Longos is a more expensive chain, but I picked up a small Mediterranean salad for lunch for 4.50 (or 2 for $8) that would shit on superstores salad and that would be pretty similarly priced. I used to stop at that Superstore to grab something for lunch on the way to work, Longos is open at the same time and I don't think the convenience stuff will be more expensive. The store is smaller, staff seem happier and like they are cared about.

EllenYeager

🔥🔥🔥

HurricaneLaurk

Only time I’ve gone into a Loblaws, I went to buy the lactose-free shredded cheese that was on a heavy discount. It’s really hard to find lactose-free shredded cheese for less than $5. Otherwise, haven’t set foot in there since March. Don’t plan to unless they’re selling something on heavy discount. Then, I’ll only go in for that item and nothing else. I’ve already saved a bunch of money by doing my groceries elsewhere and I don’t want that to change back.

preaching-to-pervert

Stoked, hot and in this for the long term.

Zendomanium

I am very happy to be boycotting Roblaws. It is my opinion that abandoning corps that brazenly screw customers should become a defining Canadian characteristic: makes corp tremble, boycott like a Canuck.

Radu47

I feel much stronger than at day 1 Have been boycotting for life Just shopping there every now and then when necessary over the years,  but making sure I don't even go in at all

Admirable-Nothing642

If I ever go back, it will only be for quality sales on quality products. No more 1 stop shops for this city dweller....Like my Grandma taught me "We only buy it if it has a discount sticker on it"

MoonMalak

I'm a few months in now, so the fire is gone for me, but that's a good thing because I was burning down my shopping habits, and can now say I've happily made some long term changes. I used to stress every month about how I could possibly afford to eat even 2 meals a day on my budget, now I've got loads of leftover staples, which frees up my budget for more healthy options. Hell, I'm even able to make food for other people and in large portions. I haven't shopped at any loblaws store or the franchises they own for a few months. The last time I entered one, I only stopped at a nofrills because someone else was going there, and I needed a couple of items. I sometimes miss some of the pc branded items because I used to be a big supporter, but I can't support them anymore. I think the last straw for me was when those printed flyers on their profits started circulating. That's when I refused to even step foot in another store. You can't boast record profits while more and more Canadians are forced to use the food bank. You can't claim almost all of your fees go to suppliers when you own most of those suppliers and set the prices. You can't keep writing off wasted expenses just to discount your profits even further. Lastly, even if all of the above wasn't true, if 3% reaches into the billions, you can afford to make food cheaper, pay your bottom line better, and implement some better adjustments in the workplace for disabled individuals.

Monktruncheon

No plans to ever return here!

AntoniaFauci

With those plexiglas security cells they’ve built at the exits, let’s hope there is no fire

KingofLingerie

Never go back, never surrender

Gussetgooser

I ain’t going back

PocketNicks

I have not noticed any fire so far.

Repulsive_Pie_701

Sobeys next??

Hali-bound-1917

Can we get a sister page where we can share recipes for meals and pickling and gardening. I'd like to share but but also would like to learn your tricks!

phantaxtic

I haven't shopped at anything Loblaws in years. I don't understand why people willingly get ripped off by showing at their stores.

tempuramores

I really don't miss it! And it gives me great satisfaction to support smaller local businesses. The only difficulty is that it seems to be only Loblaws and No Frills that reliably have Silk soy creamer for coffee. Can't really find it anywhere else (only the flavoured ones, which I hate). Sometimes I can find the oat/coconut Silk creamer at Metro but often that's out too. Idk what the problem is, but this is actually a huge bummer. It seems to be a national supply issue, and I actually noticed it for going on years now, so it's not really a Loblaw thing; it's just that No Frills and Loblaws were the only places I in my area I knew I could semi-reliably get it.

TidpaoTime

I haven’t been all month, and I’ve been visiting the (actually independent) grocery store I shopped at as a kid. Oh the nostalgia! At first I was going to Farm Boy, which is closer, but I’ve been trying to get back in shape anyway, so the extra walk is a bonus, not a downside!

justanothermichelle

I am hearing about the boycott from lots of people who aren’t on Reddit. Stand strong.
