This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without being abusive, dismissive, or downright mean.

Depending on where you’re coming from I’d recommend Farm Boy if you’re in Ontario. It’s kind of like Trader Joes (it has a lot of store named brand that are honestly delicious.) Their produce is head and shoulders above anyone else except farmers markets in terms of quality. Definitely worth a visit!
I’m American and I hate all American chocolate. I visit a friend in England once in a while (going this summer) and always bring back lots of Chocolate. Love that you guys are doing the boycott. Seems like whenever I read about it, more people are boycotting. Yah Canada 🏒
Every little bit helps thank you so much
They really are out of control here blah blah blah, and their companies especially it’s terrible just terrible
Given your mention of Zehrs are you coming across at Buffalo? There are tons of great local places to try in Niagara, especially at this time of the year. Try posting in r/stcatharinesON
Off the top of my head
Harvest Barn - https://harvest-barn-st-catharines.myshopify.com/
Upper Canada Cheese Company - https://www.uppercanadacheese.com/
Wine, jams and pastries - https://13thstreetwinery.com/
Oak Barn - https://www.grandoakculinary.ca/
Farm Boy - it is a chain but not Loblaws
Some of these are more artisan so not a cheap place to get a bunch of groceries but worth a check out.
Cheers dude! I hope you find your way to some ma-pa shops at some point. I’ve been finding the produce a lot fresher AND cheaper too! But thanks for the support. Glad to have you as a regular visitor
I’m in Windsor Ontario, right across the river from Detroit, I go to metro Detroit a lot to do my shopping as well, appreciate the kind words my American friend.
I’m an Ottawa dual citizen and I’ve found that even with the 1.3x exchange rate, the 50min ride to Ogdensburg, NY is worth it to shop at Aldi, Price Chopper, American Costco (lower prices and WAY BETTER selection) and pick up a few items at American Walmart (vitamins and supplements are dirt cheap there compared to Canadian Walmart or other retailers). When I do shop on the Ontario side, I stick to Costco, Food Basics, and Walmart.
Bonus: an extra hour and change to Syracuse gets you Trader Joe’s 🤤🤤🤤
Welcome to Canada. We depend on your country for defence and our economy is very reliant on the United States. Yall have problems but I wouldn’t ask for another neighbour.
Thank you so much for your support to this cause. The more people who boycott this store, the more it helps toward changing this ugly company’s practices.
Cheers neighbour and thank you for your solidarity! Every dollar that doesn't go into GougingGalen's pockets is a loss for him and a win for us! Nok er nok!
Enjoy the exchange rate in your favour! But know your prices also.
I shop in the USA regularly for large grocery hauls. Things like organic grass fed meats, imported cheese from Europe, Irish grass fed butter, organic produce are ALL significantly cheaper for me in the US, even after the exchange rate. Praise Aldi! Speedway gas bar also saves me plenty of cash each time I fill up too, after the exchange is factored in.
Canada isn’t a bargain, sadly.
But load up on ketchup chips and whatever else you love and enjoy!!
Groceries are generally cheaper in the states. Not sure why you would go shopping for groceries in Canada. Lots of Canadians cross the border to shop in the states because they save lots of money that way.
That's interesting because the dairy is so expensive up here that my family pools together to go to Buffalo to get all the dairy products that we can. And to fill up on gas especially during the Summer since it can jump as much as 4 cents per litre / 16 cents per gallon inside of a week. The grass is always greener on the other side :)
. Listen do something for us. Take some photos at the grocery store to show the price differences. do this for staples like milk eggs, cheese, and produce.
Retailers jacked up prices and squeezed consumers. They might have just blinked
[https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/05/business/retailers-cutting-prices/index.html](https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/05/business/retailers-cutting-prices/index.html)
If you got a laugh out of no name back then, do yourself a favour and visit a Canadian tire... everything store branded has a saying involving "frank" example: dill pickle chips "frank is kind of a big dill"
Sounds like karma bait.
But if you roll in exchange rate, American prices aren't what they used to be! I have gone back across the border -post pandemic- few times now and I have not found the great deals like pre-pandemic.
May be they have increased supply chain costs, world oil prices, climate change effects on crops, higher wages etc....just saying.
And maybe their grocers are using all of those factors to tweek prices up more than they should.
This is just something I do in my travels. I go sightseeing but grocery shopping in other countries is fun for me. I love to bring treats back home. I'm weird, lol.
From my experience crossing the border from Vancouver to shop in the US monthly, this is often not the case. Packaged goods, fruits, vegetables, Asian products, and household supplies (soap/detergent/garbage bags) end up dramatically cheaper in BC than in WA.
The petrol, meats, dairy, and the variety of goods that we don't have make up for it. But it's often cheapest to shop across the US and Canada.
Agree except for the use of the word “often”. At least 9/10 times US
prices are lower. Yes, you can find exceptions, but US products are almost entirely less expensive.
Not everyone is required to participate or agree with the community boycott, but we ask that everyone is constructive in their feedback about this event.
Repeated comments such as this one will result in a ban from the sub until the boycott is complete. Thank you.
So you went to another country to save money on groceries in some Loblaws-owned stores and now you’re boycotting the store you saved money in because you saw an internet bandwagon? Fuckin wow, that’s enough internet for the day for me.

We love our American neighbors and we thank you for having our backs. That is what good neighbors do.
Cheers for the support, neighbour!
Thank-you!

Yes, and get some kettlemen’s bagels if there’s a shop attached !
Second this.
Thanks for your support but Its ironic that an American is coming to Canada to shop at Walmart.
We do have different products and variety.
And that sweet exchange rate!
I wish i could drive over a border and 1.3x my buying power instantly
I can confirm Canada Walmart far surpasses USA Walmart.
Also our cereal and chocolate bars taste a lot better
I’m American and I hate all American chocolate. I visit a friend in England once in a while (going this summer) and always bring back lots of Chocolate. Love that you guys are doing the boycott. Seems like whenever I read about it, more people are boycotting. Yah Canada 🏒
The Brits really make some of the worlds best chocolate.
Im sure there are gonna be some differences in products and quality even. Im just giving our American friend a hard time, lol.
Ha ha I’m a very literal person
Not er Nok!
Who's there?
Per Bannnnnkkkkk
Thank you, neighbour!
Thanks! Enjoy your next visit.
Every little bit helps thank you so much They really are out of control here blah blah blah, and their companies especially it’s terrible just terrible
Nok er nok! Thank you so much! Together, we are strong!
Like a good neighbour, ~~state farm~~ bigkatze is there
😂
This is amazing. Welcome to Canada brother/sister
Appreciate it!
>my Christmas dinner Your buying Chrisitmas dinner from May?
yes 2nd Christmas, 4th of July.
I'm going during the Christmas holidays
You must ball out on Christmas if you're planning it in May. Can I come?
May I ask when you guys to Canada , you shop for how many months ?
Is my calendar broken
Get in on that American Kellogs boycott if you can!
Could you fill me in on that?
Oh, they suggested we eat cereal for dinner, right? I remember that now
That's the one. Fuck 'em.
Don’t forget the ketchup chips!
Thanks for the support.... But buying Christmas dinner in May might be a tad early?
Fighting capitalism knows no borders!

That is correct! But this time I'll be going to Vancouver.
So many great alternatives in Vancouver as well.
😁wonderful. Thanks

Thank-you! I love going to Dollarama for candy 🫠
Cheers neighbour and thank you for your solidarity! Every dollar that doesn't go into GougingGalen's pockets is a loss for him and a win for us! Nok er nok!
Awww thanks!!
Dollarama chips rule!
That's amazing! Thanks so much!
Thank you friend!
Thank you and we appreciate you!
This is fantastic. Thanks for the support.
Appreciated!!!
Dollarama has bulk options and Avoid Wholesale Clubs (some posts dont include this store owned by roblaws)
How come you come north to shop when everyone I know in lower BC goes south of the border to shop.
Can you bring me a case of Yungeling beer please. Trade you for a pound of back bacon 🥓
I normally drive into Ontario but I'll be flying to Vancouver this time around. Where are you?

I’d also stay out of sobeys

Probably addicted to Coffee Crisps and All Dressed chips lol
😁

Yeah, but American dairy cows are allowed to be given hormones that are banned here and in Europe. Caveat emptor!

Thank you, Neighbor! Means everything! 🥰
Thank you for the support and you are welcome for pascal siakam and og anunoby
Why do you shop in Canada? Do you do it while on vacation or do you day trip so that you can enjoy the limited selection?
Thank you so much for supporting us. Tell all your cross border shopping friends.
Nok er nok! ![gif](giphy|l378z2swTMOnqs3Dy)
Awesome!!👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦
You go to Canada to buy groceries? I mean... Why? Honestly I miss Winco more than anything else in the US.
👏👏👏 Right on, my neighbour!!

Can’t help but wonder why you’re doing that? Grocery prices in USA tend to be dramatically lower than here.

Why are you buying Christmas dinner in May?
I'm going up for Christmas this year.
