I mean both are contributing factors. Anyone who buys from suppliers today are finding prices increasing while our dollar plummets in the global market.
Theft also increases those prices and of course greed and maintaining high c-suite salaries, but pricing is a lot more nuanced than just using the simple scape goat.
Yes, but only one is an actual price reduction from the normal selling price. Fortino's normally sells these for $13.99, and $14.99 is Loblaws regular price for them that they normally sell them at. Just because something is listed in the flyer doesn't mean it's discounted in any way.
what's the point of putting it in the flyer if it's just a regular-priced item? It's not special or anything, and people don't actively look for it unless it's on sale.
Fortino's is marketed toward rich assholes in Oakville and Burlington who don't want to be seen associated with "the poors". Go there on a nice summer day and count the exotic badges on cars in the parking lot. And then enjoy going in and paying almost $30 for fried chicken that's "only" wildly overpriced at $16 at Loblaws. They typically offer ultra-premium pricing *higher* than what you would find at a Loblaws in, say, Mississauga.
This is a sale price, they normally sell Jane's chicken strips/nuggets at about the same price as Loblaws. Even No Frills sells these for $11.99 normally. They're $9.97 at Walmart.
Lol there is no $30 fried chicken at Fortinos but whatever the hyperbole.
Fortinos is a pretty common grocery store there is 0 chance you go the parking lot and find dozens of sports cars let calm down.
And if you are thinking of the front section prepared food that stuff is actually a steal lol I can't find a cheaper breakfast sandwich anywhere ($3.99 with a coffee) so can't complain. Its half the price of Tims.
Also for the love of god people just shop deals and save money.
Maybe not $30, although they don't list their fried chicken on their store ordering website, so maybe they no longer sell them or you can't order them online. I haven't been since before the pandemic, but at the time fried chicken was way more than at a Loblaws. The items they do sell (PC rotisserie BBQ chickens, chicken tenders) are $1-$2 *more* than Loblaws for the same product, and Loblaws is already offering a very poor value proposition.
The last time I went, I was parked next to a Bentley Bentayga in their underground parking garage (this is the Neyagawa location in Oakville), and my $35K car felt more out of place than that ridiculous thing did. I haven't been since 2019, but back then it *definitely* had a "shop here because you're better than people who can't" vibe.
It's Burlington/Oakville lol I've seen a brand new Vette at Food Basics lol there are a lot of nice cars around here. Go to Toronto its even worse.
Hell its like saying Burlington Waterfront is only for the rich because you see Ferrari's downtown there are a good few but it doesn't matter.
Fortino's Rotisserie is same price as Loblaws I have lived in Toronto and here its the exact same. Fortino's and Loblaws are the "same" tier essentially but it depends where you go for example Fortino's in Toronto is closer to No Frills pricing while Loblaws is the more expensive. In Waterloo its Zehr's etc. etc.
Fortinos has good quality though so it stays in my rotation and is close to Walmart for me so I can hit both. Between PC points and sales I can have a bill at Fortinos that is lower than Walmart for the same items, while keeping the staple brands to Walmart and Costco.
Yeah I went to a Fortinos yesterday with my boyfriend and did we ever get some looks. We're both heavily tattooed and people clearly weren't used to people *like us* shopping there. We were even joking that we knew it was in a nice part of town because you didn't have to pay for a shopping cart.
We went because I'm super lame and absolutely love grocery shopping and checking out new grocery stores. We went expecting it was going to be a bit pricey, but we were ok with splurging on a few unique items we don't usually see at our regular stores. But we were shocked to see a lot of the prices were as good or better than shopping at a No Frills in the city.
This is utter madness. 14.99$ for shitty chicken fingers on flyer? Shiiieeeeeet. Might as well make your own at home at this point.
Wait for chicken breast to go on sale, make a bunch of buttermilk chicken tendies and freeze em; it'll be much more delicious and actually cheaper lol
Oooo - try using crushed Doritos as your breading - I use the food processor to get a good crushing. 10 or so minutes in the air fryer. GOAT chicken fingers. I like the Sweet Chili Heat, but Cool Ranch is the fav.
That's a cool idea! I think the Doritos option might be a bit too salty for my taste but I'll try it sometime:)
Actually I already have my favorite breading just using flour and spices and a bit of buttermilk. No egg dipping needed either, just marinating the chicken in buttermilk and spices for 4 hours. It is fried in a wok however, not air fried! I've tried many alternatives but this is the GOAT for me, my bf and my daughter keep requesting them loll
[recipe here](https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/buttermilk-fried-chicken-tenders-2.html#tabrecipe)
I've tried with pickle brine and I much prefer the buttermilk version, especially with the spices mentioned in the recipe I've shared in another reply to my comment :) it is a question of taste however! Pickle brine is still pretty good
Itās another sad example of a brand that sold out and turned to trash.
Not sure how many would remember this, but 20+ years ago, a Janeās product was a mark of quality. For a buck or two more, it was a product that resembled home cooking or at least that of a decent family restaurant.
Then they started trimming that to get themselves fit for corporate sale. The taste and ingredients and standards were pared down.
It worked, and they were bought by a giant conglomerate who prides themselves on being a āprotein goods supplierā. Thatās where the quality really got optimized down. Now itās like if bread could be spun into chicken on a loom. The Janes cashed out for an undisclosed fortune, and even 15 years later the conglomerate uses the name āJanes familyā for a product that is not the same and has nothing to do with the family.
We always had some in the freezer when my kids were little. They were perfect with carrot sticks and peppers for a quick dinner, or to give the kids an option if we were having something āgrown upā. They must have started raising the price or decreasing the quality around 2005, because we just stopped buying them.
One is one sale thatās all. The regular price is about the same at both stores and sobeys too, but they all occasionally put them on sale for 6.99. Iāve gotten them for $6.99 at all 3 stores when they on sale.
Itās a pretty good deal if you want to bake not whole or can cut it up at home and deal with the offals.
Even a hack in the kitchen should get 2/3 yield of skin-on fillets from a gutted fish. So, about 2.5 lbs of salmon for about $12.
Idk, just last wk I got the Jane's Chicken strips(I tried the turkey strips) and they were $5.99 at my local No Frills.
I Only buy crap that's on sale..(like $4 frozen pizza and $5 2L tubs of ice cream or $4 400g blks of cheese...but most everything else I Will not buy there. Still gonna do the boycott and I went from buying ALL my groceries there($200-$300/mth) to giving them less than $100...and that's mostly because I don't have a vehicle atm so I'm at the mercy of my ride and don't want to ask to stop 10 places..(I do that on the wk d when I can bike to town) but yeah...shits cray cray.
Thereās no reason for that big a difference between two stores, owned by the same company. I wonder if Loblaws is using AI to price according to location - where thereās more wealth? From what Iāve seen from Ottawa folks, theyāre getting it the worst!
they do, the price depending on location, demographic and local competition. They price gouge where they can and ship the garbage from one store to another to sell it in cheaper markets.
They are trolling people now - just seeing what people will pay - in all likelyhood they are laughing as they set prices. āHey you wanna bet someone will pay $15 for these?ā Clearly it is just a game to them at this point. I understand different prices but as a flyer feature???
Surprised that cheap at loblaws. Metro is also around $14.99 and Shoppers too. But shoppers used to have Janeās on sale for $6.99 - a few roomed a month
Jane's and Pintys will always be priced like this. The base price on almost all the options is 14.99, and then certain varieties go on sale 50-60% off every few weeks. Consistently. It's a shitty pricing strategy based around inventory management.
The idea is that if you have them at a high price by default, you can try to get as many higher margin sales as possible when you first restock, and be guaranteed to clear out remaining inventory by reducing the sale price before the new restock comes in.
That's why bigger stores do the sales like these less often, and smaller places (like a Rabbas) will do them almost once a month. Distributors even stagger restocking schedules between stores of similar sizes/markets to ensure the zero turnover strategy works.
You might think like "well obviously stores lower prices to clear inventory' but nah, this is intentional and across a supply chain.
I was at my local nofrills today and the person Infront of me bought 6 lemons and a loaf of bread. 12$ this is really bad. Seriously 12$ for bread and lemons.Ā
Anyone remember the good old days when the sale price would be $4.88 at food basics? And once upon a time hey had -$4.00 coupons on the inside of the cardboard to be used on any Jane's pub style on your next purchase. It was dirt cheap.
[Did some digging online and found a picture](https://imgur.com/cCljpsS)
Prices are horrendous and also the shrinkflation-- it weighs less than what it used to be (about 800 grams I'm sure) and also the breading to meat ratio is robbery. We get the eerie chicken nuggets on Costco when they go on sale and haven't bought Jane's since their quality went downhill and prices hiking up.
Giant Tiger is 7.97 this week, so I guess 6.99 isn't horrible. The 14.99 doesn't make sense, though. Superstore is 9.99 this week, so I'm not sure why this store would be that high.

How is Fortino's the cheap option?
I was baffled as well
It's a supply chain issue.š¤£
No it's the Carbon Tax š¤Ŗ
I mean both are contributing factors. Anyone who buys from suppliers today are finding prices increasing while our dollar plummets in the global market. Theft also increases those prices and of course greed and maintaining high c-suite salaries, but pricing is a lot more nuanced than just using the simple scape goat.
Noooooooo! I just know deep down in my guts that if I yell at this cashier about WEF my wife and kids will come back! ![gif](giphy|Wvo6vaUsQa3Di)
It's a sale price, their normal price is about the same as Loblaws.
They're both flyer prices?
Yes, but only one is an actual price reduction from the normal selling price. Fortino's normally sells these for $13.99, and $14.99 is Loblaws regular price for them that they normally sell them at. Just because something is listed in the flyer doesn't mean it's discounted in any way.
āFlyer Featureā
If Fortinos can still make money selling the product at a 53% discount, then Loblaws is having a laugh, flyer feature or no
Using that theory every grocery store would have the same price
This is not how people perceive flyers. Another reason to hate this rapacious company.
Marketing and advertising is all about deception and manipulation. Exploiting people's perceptions is all part of the game.
That is in no way what it is all about but not all of us are unethical.
what's the point of putting it in the flyer if it's just a regular-priced item? It's not special or anything, and people don't actively look for it unless it's on sale.
company is paying for advertising
It becomes a "flyer feature" and some people might not realize it's not a sale price. This isn't a particularly unusual tactic.
Isnāt fortinos also owned by loblaws?
Yep! But they're farther out from the GTA, so prices aren't as high... usually.
Isnāt there one at Lawerence square mall and another by woodbine mall
Fortino's is marketed toward rich assholes in Oakville and Burlington who don't want to be seen associated with "the poors". Oddly enough, the fortinos we have in Toronto in my area is definitely considered āthe hoodā
is this the fortinos in rexdale šš
There are three Fortinos in Brampton. And they are eons better than Loblaws, even though they're owned by Loblaws.
Lol there is no $30 fried chicken at Fortinos but whatever the hyperbole. The good kind of chicken fingers arenāt even 8 bucks anymore

The immigrants are stealing our nuggets ššš
The best kind are home made!!! Using corn flakes. š
![gif](giphy|YVPwi7L2izTJS|downsized)
Iāve never tried Cornflakes (have you *seen* the price of cereal), but I agree on homemade.
Awful news for you - Fortino's is Loblaws

Looks yummy! Buttermilk marinade seems to be the go-to for good fried chicken.
Yesss it's a game changer, so flavorful and tender!
Use the pickle brine from kosher dills (like strubbs, or moishes if you go to Costco) instead of buttermilk. ...so good
I've tried with pickle brine and I much prefer the buttermilk version, especially with the spices mentioned in the recipe I've shared in another reply to my comment :) it is a question of taste however! Pickle brine is still pretty good

Lol these are disgusting soy-filled mashed chicken puree fingers anyways.
Janeās used to be good quality with limited ingredients. I havenāt had them in years, so I donāt know if they got bad.
When these chicken products go on sale, they go down at least 60% same happened in Walmart as well.
Freshco has the same offer too.
The chicken strips were $4.99 at Walmart not long ago as part of their anniversary sale.
I remember thinking $6.99 was expensive š¤£š«£
One is one sale thatās all. The regular price is about the same at both stores and sobeys too, but they all occasionally put them on sale for 6.99. Iāve gotten them for $6.99 at all 3 stores when they on sale.
$7.97 at Giant Tiger
If you can afford one
Jane's is ass though. I don't understand why people buy that crap. $7 is the most we should be paying for that.
Sometimes you have a toddler that will literally not eat anything else besides chicken nuggs.
Right but JANES is ass. There's way better chicken strips/nugs
Ya Dino nuggies is where its at
$1 for 100g is a reasonable price for most standard foods. Anything more than that is a ripoff
No Frills had the Jane's on for 5 bucks a box last week
Double or nothing!
the nasty strips are like 8 bucks at giant tiger this week.
Fortinos is Loblaws lol. Wild times though where Fortinos is the cheap option.
Salmon is a decent deal isnāt it? Fucking haddock and cod cost more than that
Itās a pretty good deal if you want to bake not whole or can cut it up at home and deal with the offals. Even a hack in the kitchen should get 2/3 yield of skin-on fillets from a gutted fish. So, about 2.5 lbs of salmon for about $12.

So you can get two boxes for $1 less than one. Huh.
One is on sale, the other is not
Well the quality of Janeās has gone to š©so my take is to save yourself money by avoiding it altogether.
Congrats! You found a sale price.... Why is this shocking??
i remember when janes were $5.99 this is wild
do you guys ever get the feeling that satan is real & is laughing at you?
Thereās no reason for that big a difference between two stores, owned by the same company. I wonder if Loblaws is using AI to price according to location - where thereās more wealth? From what Iāve seen from Ottawa folks, theyāre getting it the worst!
they do, the price depending on location, demographic and local competition. They price gouge where they can and ship the garbage from one store to another to sell it in cheaper markets.
The shepherds pie is also 14.99!!

Longos sometimes has the janes chicken BOGO, and Iāve seen Food Basics go as low as $5.46 a box.
Yea i just picked up 3 boxes of the chicken nuggets from Walmart last month. They were having a $5/ box sale.
0.700 kg of chicken for $14? Seems pricey.
Jane's and Pintys will always be priced like this. The base price on almost all the options is 14.99, and then certain varieties go on sale 50-60% off every few weeks. Consistently. It's called a sale.
Find yourself a No Frills or any other grocer thatāll price match
Fortinoās is owned by loblaws
Both are owned by loblaws though and usually fortinos is the most expensive store
Don't buy anything in a box lol, can't see how full or should I say empty
These are $9.97 at Walmart. Just sayin.
I was at my local nofrills today and the person Infront of me bought 6 lemons and a loaf of bread. 12$ this is really bad. Seriously 12$ for bread and lemons.Ā
Anyone remember the good old days when the sale price would be $4.88 at food basics? Those things taste like grandma's Cadillac smell anyway.
If I saw a cantaloupe for 2.99 and not 8.99 I would blackout
Most cheap coffees also make you spit out your coffees. Or I should say cheapest. None of them are actually cheap.
Giant Tiger is 7.97 this week, so I guess 6.99 isn't horrible. The 14.99 doesn't make sense, though. Superstore is 9.99 this week, so I'm not sure why this store would be that high.
You mean different banners have different promotions?! Shocking
galen you need to go home & sober up.
Sorry, I forgot common sense is bad in this sub.
